Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of five Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Women’s and 2010 Men’s Eastern Water Polo Championships and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the spring of 2011 Bucknell is scheduled to play a record 12 games inside the gorgeous facility.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BISON “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth,, written in 1910 Ninth

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 119 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 379 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 257 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2010.

In addition to the 119 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 300 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 200910, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections with 119.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

SEASON OUTLOOK Bucknell, in 2010, won five of its final six games and claimed its first-ever Southern Championships crown. The Bison finished 17-10 overall and 5-1 in league play, tying rival Princeton for the regular-season league title. While Bucknell would like to duplicate that feat this spring, it will not be possible as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) has realigned divisions and the Bison are now in the Western Division with perennial national powers Hartwick, Indiana and Michigan, as well as Gannon and Mercyhurst. The Southern Championships no longer exist and Bucknell’s main focus now will be on winning the competitive 12-team Eastern Championship and earning the program’s first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. The newly aligned divisions are not the only thing different around Kinney Natatorium this year. Interim head coach Paul Rave, who spent the previous two-and-one-half years as an assistant with both the Bison women’s and men’s programs, took over as frontman when former head coach John Abdou departed for his native California in December. Sadie Abuhoff, a 2007 graduate of Bucknell and a four-year member of the women’s water polo squad, is new to the coaching staff. Rave has high expectations for the Bison, who have seven freshmen joining a team that appeared in the national rankings late last spring. “Top to bottom this is one of our deepest teams since I have been here,” commented Rave, who served a stint as an interim head coach at his alma mater, UC Santa Barbara, in 2008. “We have a lot of good athletes and a few are poised to stand out. One of my philosophies is that a player should be able to play every position and we have a lot of people that can play all over the pool. The amount of potential we have in terms of the number of athletes and how versatile they are is one of our biggest strengths.” Among the most important players to the success of the Bison in 2011 is senior co-captain Kandis Canonica, who already owns the program record for assists (176). An Honorable Mention All-American last year, Canonica is coming off a season where she led the team in assists (51) and points (100) and was second on the squad with 49 goals. She is the only player in program history to post three consecutive 100-point campaigns. A three-time All-CWPA Southern Division selection, including a first-team honor last season, Kanonica enters her final year third on Bucknell’s career points list (335), sixth in goals (159) and first in assists (176). “Kandis has been outstanding since she got here and this year doesn’t look to be any different,” said Rave, who has helped the Bison to 35 victories over the last two campaigns. “She’ll continue to improve all aspects of her game. One item that does stand out is her leadership. She’s always been a person who does her role and does it well, but she is getting to a point where she recognizes others’ roles and does what it takes to facilitate for the team, as a leader should.” Fellow senior and co-captain Meghan McNally should see an increased role in her final year in Orange and Blue. A veteran of 80 career games and 24 starts, McNally registered career highs in goals (8), assists (8) and points (16) as a junior. Her playing time and production has increased every year and Rave expects more of the same. “She’s had a great start so far,” mentioned Rave. “She is from New York and had a slower transition to college water polo. She’s had her best preseason and everything seems to be clicking.” The final of Bucknell’s three seniors is Haley Prickett. Prickett battled injuries last year, but her shoulder issues seem to be behind her heading into 2011. Despite playing reduced minutes last D year, she registered 17 goals, 16 asy sists and 23 ejections drawn, brings ing in her career numbers to 83 goals, 66 6 assists and 89 ejections drawn. “Haley is one of our most expeHaley Prickett rienced players. She has game sense r that th is going to be a big help for us,” said Rave. “Haley’s role has changed s over the years from being a starter o who w scores a lot of goals to being a more of a key reserve who does a m lot lo of the little things to help a team win.” w Junior Hallie Kennan should once again team with Canonica to give the a Bison a potent scoring punch. The B left-hander had a breakout year as le a sophomore, posting a team-high 58 5 goals and finishing second on the team to Canonica with 80 points. t

2011 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo

The Second Team All-CWPA Southern Division selection started Kandis Canonica just 11 games but still tallied at least one goal in 23 of 27 contests. “Hallie is a little bit of a mystery heading into the season because she was abroad in the fall,” explained Rave. “She has grown more comfortable in her role. She’s not surprised anymore when she scores, like she was at the beginning of last year. Everything is more natural and comfortable for her and we look for that to translate into better decision making and more confidence overall.” Classmate Amanda Skonezney is also an experienced veteran, having started all but one game over the last two campaigns. The team’s top sprinter, Skonezney claimed 39 sprints last year and has won 116 in her two years as a Bison. Skonezney increased her offensive production last year, totaling 46 points in 27 games, compared to 40 in 35 contests as a freshman. She was also one of just two players to be a member of the starting unit every time. “I see Amanda’s role to be pretty similar to what it has been in the past,” predicted Rave. “However, we do have a few freshmen swimming right with her. She used to be a standout at her speed, but not anymore, and she’s not slowing down. Hopefully we’ll be able to give her a break when she needs one.” Rounding out the seven-person junior class are Becca Shopiro, goalkeeper Brittany Connell, Ariel Frankeny and Dalia Varela. Frankeny and Varela have combined to appear in one career game, while Shopiro and Connell are looking to grow into larger roles. Shopiro saw action in 24 contests last year, starting eight. She is a veteran of 54 career games and has totaled 12 points, 21 steals and seven ejections drawn. Based on her experience, Connell enters the season as the starting goalie, although Rave enjoys having competition at the goalkeeper position and will likely award freshman Rena Heim some playing time. Connell made 20 saves and posted a .714 save percentage as a backup to all-league performer Alison Carter last year, following a freshman campaign that saw her stop better than 50 percent of the shots she faced. “Brittany is definitely the leader in terms of experience, coming from California and her time playing here,” said Rave, who has personally coached the goalies since arriving at Bucknell. “She has spent a lot of time here and is probably hungrier because she has been behind Carter the last two years. Brittany and Rena (Heim) have a great relationship and work well together. I see it as an opportunity where they can battle to win the spot.” The three-person Bison sophomore class of Shannon Carroll, Krystle Morgan and Tara Murao saw plenty of playing time last year as each member appeared in all 27 games and the trio combined for 17 starts. However, they were able to ease into the veteran lineup. This year Rave expects each to step into larger roles. Morgan was the most productive of the group offensively, netting 20 goals to rank sixth on the team, while Murao was named the team’s Rookie of the Year after scoring 11 goals and drawing 34 ejections. Carroll contributed 10 points and eight steals. The aforementioned Heim has six classmates that are also joining the squad this year and Rave was impressed by them in preseason workouts. The freshman class of Samantha Deana, Mackenzie Ferry, Sarah Frank, Stephanie Ovalle, Heather Smith, Julianne Valdes and Heim hail from five states and features three Pennsylvanians.

The men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell University will be g greatly bolstered thanks to a $1.5 million commitment made by Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards in the summer of 2009. The pledge was made in honor of Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from 1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell. As the Richards’ multi-year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. The Russell Endowment will provide a lasting memorial honoring the lifetime contributions of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Bucknell’s varsity water polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne ’62 to honor former coach and director of athletics Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradition of the varsity aquatics programs at Bucknell. “Bucknell is grateful to Dan and Chris Richards for setting an outstanding example of alumni loyalty and leadership as we enter the third year of our compreh hensive campaign,” said then-President Brian C. Mitchell. “Their generosity hono ors Coach Russell’s important legacy, and will help future generations of studentaathletes to enjoy the same great experience that they did.” “We are extremely pleased to accept the Richards’ generous commitment, and I would like to publicly thank Dan and Chris for a gift that will directly impact the student-athlete experience for current and future Bucknellians,” said John P. Hardt, director of athletics and recreation. “To me, the most rewarding aspect of this gift is that it comes from two former Bison student-athletes who enjoyed such a positive experience at Bucknell that they felt compelled to give back as alumni. Their leadership and financial support can serve as a model for all of our sports programs here at Bucknell, as well as for other institutions around the country.” “This is a tremendous act of generosity that will help our programs move in the right direction,” said former Bison head men’s and women’s water polo coach John Abdou. “It is my hope that Dan and Chris’ gift will inspire others to step forward and support the program in a similar fashion. I can’t think of a better way to pay tribute to Coach Russell - he was truly the pioneer of water polo on the East Coast. I am sure many of his former players and colleagues will be extremely touched by the Richards’ gift.” “We are very happy that we can provide the water polo program with some much-needed support, while at the same time paying tribute to Coach Russell,” ssaid Dan Richards. “He played an important role in so many of our lives, and Chris aand I are thankful that we have the ability to make this gift in his memory.”

MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards have created a matching challenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swimming and diving to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell. Up to a limit of $250,000, the Richards will accelerate payment of their multi-year $1.5 million pledge to the new “Russell Endowment” by matching qualifying gifts and pledges made by others, as follows: 1. Qualifying gifts and pledges made by individual donors, of... 2. at least $5,000 to an endowment fund named to honor Coach Dick Russell in support of the water polo and/or swimming and diving programs, 3. paid on or before June 30, 2012, plus... 4. corporate matching gifts resulting from qualified gifts and payments made by individual donors... 5. ...will be matched by accelerated pledge payments from Dan and Chris Richards into the Russell Endowment no later than Dec. 31 of the second year following the year in which the qualified gift or payment is received • Contact Todd Newcomb (570-577-1771; tnewcomb@bucknell.edu) with questions

The strength & conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

CWPA INFORMATION

Becca Shopiro

Bucknell is a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), which originally began as the Mid-Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association (EWPRA). The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating core. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow. Bucknell is a member of the CWPA Western Division along with Gannon, Hartwick, Indiana, Mercyhurst and Michigan.

ACADEMIC AWARDS The Bucknell women’s water polo team was well represented on both the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Team and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Scholar-Athlete Team for the 2009-10 academic year. The organizations recognize student-athletes on three GPA levels: Excellent 3.20-3.40, Superior 3.41-3.70 and Outstanding 3.71-4.0, while the team honors represent those institutions whose combined GPA is over 2.75. As a team, Bucknell had a 3.03 GPA, while six players were honored by the two organizations. ABOUT BUCKNELL

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic prioriti and supporting student-athletes’ ties education, even while providing the e rigorous and serious NCAA Division r I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. s Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of stum dent-athletes and the general stud dent body by encouraging personal d health, development, and balance h among intellectual, social, civic, and a physical pursuits; by celebrating p challenge and competition; and by c preparing participants for service p and a leadership in the world. Coaches and a staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportup nities aimed at increasing student n engagement, as well as strengthening e character, healthy living, teamwork, c sportsmanship, and spirit. In creats The Kenneth Langone Athletics & ing in shared experiences for students, Recreation Center faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, fa family, and friends, the Department’s fa programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster lifelong relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core a aims to ensure that a Bucknell educat tion is challenging and engaging, with o openness to new ideas and a culture of in innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning E Experience will provide a residential l learning and living experience that c complements the academic program, in integrates the athletics and recreation p program and promotes personal growth a development and civic and ethical and r responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
