Bison Good Sports

In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 82 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2010-11 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: *Patriot League schools came in with glowing marks in the latest release of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate, as 97 percent of Patriot League teams came in at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 970. *Bucknell claimed the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the 17th time overall and sixth consecutive season. The Bison also won their eighth male trophy and 17th female award, sweeping the honors for the second straight year and seventh time overall. *Six different schools claimed multiple Patriot League titles, led by Navy with seven and Bucknell with six. Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 120.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 120 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist studentathletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

The Bucknell field hockey offices featured a poster last year with the message “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” That sentiment will continue to be a goal as the Bison plan to let their game speak for itself facing one of their toughest schedules yet. “I don’t want to jump the gun on this, but it’s probably the most difficult schedule that Bucknell has ever had,” said head coach Jeremy Cook. “We play about half the teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last year. That is intentional. What we’re trying to do is push the whole idea for the girls and Bucknellians in general to rise to challenges.” Going up against some of the best teams Mallory Smith in the country is hardly new for the Bison as they continue their series against perennial power Princeton as well as Temple, Michigan and eight-time reigning Patriot League champion American to name a few. The challenges are all part of the plan for Cook, who has been steadily increasing the strength of his program’s schedule since his arrival to Bucknell four years ago. “Gone are the days when we’re going to host weekends and score 14 goals and not have anybody score against us,” said Cook. “Every single game this year is going to be extremely competitive. “The hope is to compete for a [Patriot League] championship. If you play a tough enough schedule that prepares you in the right way, then maybe you take a game off American when it counts in the end.” Bucknell’s climb into the upper tier of field hockey competition has been accompanied by hard-hitting offseason development including the annual spring workouts and another trip to the Junior High Performance Championship for junior Tayler Siegrist and sophomores Vickie Resh, Rachel Misko and Erica Perrine. The additional playing time already appears to be paying off for the veterans. “They worked really, really hard in the spring, and despite some injuries, I think the group really made a lot of progress,” praised Cook just prior to the start of preseason practice. “A lot of leadership emerged.” Among those back for another season are seniors Marci Richard, Mallory Smith, Sarah Zargarpour and Kate Bowen. Bucknell will benefit from its speed in 2011, and Richard and Smith will be key contributors to that team strength. After putting up a strong performance during the spring season, Richard has solidified her role as one of the Bison’s go-to players. “This spring she grew into a more dynamic player,” Cook said of Richard. “The defenders that she’s playing against, she’s putting them under a huge amount of pressure through her ability to move the ball around. Her ball movement has gotten better. Her vision on the field has gotten dramatically better, and her first touch and release skills have gotten really good. She’s going to be huge for us.” Smith ended her junior campaign on a high note, scoring her lone goal of the season against Lafayette in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal. The Bison hope to cash in on her explosive speed to create even more scoring opportunities for the forward. “She’s great at holding onto the ball in some tough situations. This spring, she took some strides toward being able to be a little more aggressive, being a little bit more free as she’s going forward with the ball,” said Cook. “My guess is that she’s going to get a lot of opportunities in the circle this year. She’s going to create a lot for herself.” Zargarpour also returns after breaking into the record books for career wins (10), saves (117) and shutouts (5) last season. The goalkeeper missed the spring season while studying abroad in Scotland but has been back on campus training throughout the summer, regaining her old form. Also guarding the net for a fourth year is Bowen, a midfielder who made a breakthrough last season by starting in all 19 of the Bison’s games for the first time in her career. “She’s grown leaps and bounds,” lauded Cook. “She’s got great size and strength and is a really strong leader. She’s getting better and better at controlling the area around her and playing in a really good team way.” Leading the way in the junior class will be Siegrist, who spent her offseason balancing a trip to the NCAA East Regional Championships throwing javelin for Bison track and competing in her second Junior High Performance field hockey tournament. Even with the hectic schedule, Siegrist continues to develop an already solid game that saw her score 10 points on three goals and four assists a year ago.

“Her ball speed has always been fantastic, and she’s gotten even better at that,” said Cook of Siegrist, who finished second on the team in scoring among non-seniors last year. “Her game understanding has grown leaps and bounds, and this summer the big thing for her was that her individual defense improved pretty dramatically.” Joining the defender will be classmates Katie Durkin and Kelly Stefanowicz. Back from an injury-plagued fall, Durkin will undoubtedly energize the Bison with her hardnosed play. “She loves diving to finish, and I really hope that we can get her up there and scoring some goals just on cleaning up the scraps,” said Cook. Stefanowicz is in just her second season with the Bison after joining the squad as a walk-on, and Bucknell will be looking to get her more into the mix as she continues to improve. “She’s come a long way,” said Cook. “She has good close skill, [and] is very, very good in small spaces.” Among Bucknell’s returning major award winners in 2010, is Misko, the Patriot League Rookie of the Year (Scholar-Athlete of the Year Christine Weiss graduated in the spring). Misko started all 19 games in her debut season and is the team’s leading returning scorer after tallying six goals and two assists for 14 points. The Bison are not going to rest on Misko’s past success, however. “What we’re going to try to do is move her up the field, try to get her a little bit more involved in the attack,” Cook explained. “Her basic skills are absolutely phenomenal. She sees the field really well, but we’re going to try to get her more scoring opportunities than we did last year.” Classmate Resh joined Misko in the offseason at the Junior High Performance Championship, refining the skills that have made her one of the sophomores’ biggest contributors. The pint-sized midfielder’s speed and field vision will be key to the Orange and Blue’s game plan this fall. “Her individual defense has just been phenomenal for us. It was great last fall. The progress that she has made has been offensively,” said Cook. “It looks like we’re going to put a lot of weight on her shoulders in terms of carrying the team out of the back.” Vying for more time in goal will be Perrine, who is considered one of the most athletic and coordinated players on the field. She saw action in just two games last fall, but with Zargarpour overseas in the spring, Perrine was able to showcase her full range of skills for the first time and build confidence in her play. “She got to play every single spring game. I think that really helped her,” said Cook. “Being able to come down and play with us at the High Performance level just took her up a notch in terms of her confidence.” Adding to the large cohort are Leigh Hillman, Cassie Goggin, Hannah Jones and Jennifer LaBarre. Hillman’s speed came into play during the Bison’s spring game against Penn State, giving her two goals against the Nittany Lions, who are again on the schedule this fall. Quickness will also be a key contribution from Jones who returns to the team after spending the spring with the track team as a hurdler. “Getting her back is big,” said Cook of Jones. “It just adds a little bit more speed up front.” Goggin got her big chance during the 2010 Patriot League Tournament when she stepped in for an injured teammate. That opportunity translated into a strong spring campaign, and Bucknell will look for those improvements to continue into the current season. LaBarre will be making her way back from offseason shoulder surgery, but with her defensive improvements will likely see time in the midfield. Cook sees teamwork as especially crucial for his squad to be successful this season. The players understand the vital importance of working together, making the integration of the Bison’s nine freshmen - Kristen Felt, Cassie Lawrence, Kelsey Mucelli, Maggie Murphy, Hope Obernesser, Gabby Palumbo, Amie Pritchard, Ellie Riegel and Liz Wills - that much more of a priority. “Out of that group (of freshmen), we’re going to probably need at least three or four of them to give us significant time on the field. It doesn’t make you nervous, but it’s definitely something that we look forward to seeing how that all works out,” said Cook. “We’re really happy with them. They all came to summer camp, and it was really fun to have them on the field. “It’s a really well-rounded class. Overall, top to bottom, it’s got really good basic skills and a lot of speed.” Bucknell will open its 2011 campaign with Temple in Philadelphia at noon on Aug. 26, while the home slate kicks off with Princeton at 6 p.m. on Sept. 2. The game versus the Tigers is the first of two to be aired live on Bison Vision.

Jeremy Cook, a former member of the United States national field hockey team and most recently an assistant coach at Indiana University, was named head field hockey coach at Bucknell in July 2008. Among his extensive international field hockey experience, Cook has served as a technical assistant with the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams. He assisted the men’s team at the Olympic qualifying tournament, and the 2008 Olympics-bound women’s squad at the Pan American Games, the Champions Challenge, the Chile 4-Nation Tournament and the team’s Holland tour. He has also served as an assistant coach and administrative director at the Elite Performance Training Center in either the Pennsylvania/New Jersey or the Midwest Region each summer since 2005, and he has more than six years of experience coaching the U.S. Futures program in the Washington, D.C., area and at developmental camps across the country. During the summer of 2010, Cook served as the head coach of the Pennsylvania Junior Team at the USA Field Hockey High Performance Championships and led the squad to the title. Hired as an assistant coach at Indiana in February 2007, Cook has also had assistant coaching stints at Penn (2005-06), Drexel (2000-01), American (1999) and Cornell (1997-98). Cook, who graduated summa cum laude from Drexel in 2002, enjoyed a stellar playing career. From 1997-2000 he was a member of Team USA. He competed in the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg and was a member of three gold medal-winning teams at the U.S. Olympic Festival. He also played on three Indoor Pan American Cup teams and on the 2003 Indoor World Cup team that competed in Leipzig, Germany. From 1995-97, Cook played on the first team with Hockey Club Rotterdam in The Netherlands. Cook lives in Lewisburg with his wife Sandra.

Jamie Montgomery, a two-time National Champion while playing at Wake Forest, was named an assistant field hockey coach in the summer of 2009. Montgomery joined the program following a graduate assistant coaching position at Temple where she earned her master’s degree in urban education. In her role as an assistant with the Owls, Montgomery fulfilled a number of duties including coordinating practice and game schedules, recruiting, fundraising and travel in addition to onfield coaching. As a student-athlete from 2003-06, Montgomery was a four-year starter for the nationally ranked Demon Deacons, helping the squad to national titles in 2004 and 2005 and Atlantic Coast Conference titles in 2004 and 2006. As a junior, she was a key component of a Wake Forest defense that allowed a mere 0.96 goals per game. A year later, the Maidens, Va., native was named All-ACC, NCAA All-Tournament and Second Team All-America. Montgomery was also selected to the 2006 All-ACC Academic Team while earning her degree in English and sociology. Montgomery’s playing experience extends to the international stage as well, as she was a member of the United States Women’s Field Hockey Junior National Team from 2004-06, earning the opportunity to travel to Santiago, Chile for the 2004 4-Nation Tournament and the 2005 Junior World Cup. She also traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2005 for the Junior Pan American Games. More recently, Montgomery took part in a five-game test series in Argentina as a member of the United States Women’s Field Hockey Senior Developmental Team. In addition to her run at Temple, Montgomery’s coaching resume includes stints with the Wake Forest University Elite and Team Camp, Princeton University Camp, Champions Edge Field Hockey Camp and Godwin High School Field Hockey Clinic. Montgomery is married to Bucknell assistant football coach R.D. Montgomery.

Erin Singleton, a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year at Holy Cross, joined the Bucknell staff in the summer of 2009 as a graduate assistant coach. She completed her master’s degree in psychology at Bucknell last spring and has since been elevated to the position of second assistant with the Bison. In her final season with the Crusaders, Singleton recorded a 7-11 record in goal with a 3.12 goals against average and a .773 save percentage, which ranked 12th nationally. Her 8.5 saves per game also ranked third in the country. Singleton led the Patriot League in shutouts and goals against average as a sophomore before leading the league in saves, saves per game and save percentage as a senior. During her career, the Amesbury, Mass., native earned three First Team All-Patriot League selections. Her trio of Goalkeeper of the Year honors marked the first time a student-athlete had claimed the league’s award more than once. Away from the field, Singleton was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the NFHCA National Academic Squad. She completed her degree in psychology from Holy Cross in 2009.

Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame The following former field hockey players have been inducted in Bucknell’s Athletics Hall of Fame:

Susanne Gray Behringer (’84): A captain of both the field hockey and lacrosse teams, Susanne entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1996.

Barbara Castens-Seidell (’79): A co-captain in field hockey and one of the first two women elected to the Hall of Fame. Castens-Seidell played goalkeeper for the Bison. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1985.

Dianne Czarnecki (’87): A three-time All EastCoast Conference field hockey player and 1986 Regional All-American, Dianne entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Karin Wegener Knisely (’79): One of the first two women elected to the Hall of Fame, Karin was Bucknell’s first three-sport captain. She entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1985. Marjorie A. Deck (’73): A co-captain of the field hockey team, Marjorie entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989. Jill Henry-Feeney (’81): A three-sport captain and twice named to the Academic All-America College Division Team in basketball, Jill entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1993. Kathy Kline Grove (’80): A four-year starter in field hockey, Kathy was a nominee for the Honda Broderick Award. She ranks second in career goals for Bucknell with 48 and entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1994.

Pam Heller Shassian (’78): A three-sport standout in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse, Pam was a pioneer for the women’s lacrosse program, serving as co-captain her senior year. She was second team All-Mideast in field hockey and entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2000. Margaret Philleo Ricci (’79): A standout in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, Margaret was inducted with the Class of 2002. She played on the Mideast Regional hockey team and in the U.S. National tournament. She was a three-time Susquehanna All-Star. Tricia Way (’94): Tricia became the first woman athlete in Bucknell history to earn all-conference honors five times. She was a three-time All-Patriot League selection in women’s lacrosse and a twotime honoree in field hockey. She co-captained the 1993 field hockey team and was a two-year

captain in lacrosse. Tricia was the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete once for field hockey and twice for lacrosse and entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2006. Dorothy “Bugs” Harvey Lloyd (’53): Dorothy, better known as “Bugs,” was a four-year starter for the field hockey club, leading it to great success in Bucknell Intercollegiate Play Day tournaments. She was a member of the Women’s Athletic Association board and served as the organization’s president during her senior year. Widely considered the best athlete on the team, she was also known as an unselfish player who helped make her teammates better. She was named to the MidEast Conference all-star team and was a finalist for the national team. Dorothy entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007. Almira Baldwin Arnold (’94): Part of Bucknell’s 2008 Hall of Fame Class, Almira earned all-conference honors for four straight seasons, only the second Bison female athlete to accomplish the feat. She was one of two Bison named to the Patriot Legue All-Decade Team for field hockey and was a Second Team Mid-East Regional AllAmerican in 1992 and 1993. She graduated with the program record for assists.

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 21 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 120 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 122 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 21 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholarathlete model. The 2003 addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members

of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; and the spacious West Fields Complex, which encompasses Depew Field (baseball), Becker Field (softball) and the adjoining Graham Field (Astroturf for field hockey and women’s lacrosse) and Emmitt Field (natural grass for soccer) at Holmes Stadium that now features a new stadium/press box facility.

Life After Bucknell

Graduates of Bucknell University have the highest earning potential in the nation, a new research survey revealed in July 2008. The 2008 Education and Salary Report, prepared and released by Seattlebased PayScale Inc., named Bucknell graduates No. 1 among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges by salary potential. The top liberal arts college category showed that the starting median salary for Bucknell graduates was $54,100, while the mid-career median salary was $110,000. Bucknell was followed by Colgate University at $52,800 and $108,000 and Amherst at $54,500 and $107,000, respectively. The salary report, the fi rst issued by the company, also ranked Bucknell 13th among all Northeastern colleges and universities for salary potential. Dartmouth College, Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, and Harvard University were Nos. 1-5, respectively. Except for Cooper Union (No. 9), Bucknell was the only predominantly undergraduate institution in the top 14 in this category. National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility. • In 2008, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers. • In 2008, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.
