What It Means To Be A Bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics
A nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

Bucknell Department of Athletics Mission Statement
The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Bucknell to Face 34-Time National Champion Oklahoma State and 23-Time National Champion Iowa in December
Four All-Americans in Last Four Years
7 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion. It will be the fourth event the Bison have hosted in the facility, which typically serves as the school’s primary basketball venue. Bucknell hosted Iowa and Rutgers in a tri-meet in November 2009, the EIWA Championships in March 2011 and Nebraska last November. The Bison are 1-2 all-time in Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell has faced Iowa twice previously. The Bison traveled to Iowa City, Iowa, in 2008-09 and lost 40-3. The two teams squared off again the following year in Sojka Pavilion with the Hawkeyes prevailing by a 29-7 score. Iowa was ranked No. 1 in the country at the time of both matches. Bucknell has traveled to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State each of the past two seasons. The Bison dropped a 39-3 decision in 2010-11 and fell by a 35-6 score this past January. The Cowboys were No. 2 in the nation both times. Bucknell vs. Iowa (all-time): Jan. 30, 2009: No. 1 Iowa 40, Bucknell 3 (Iowa City, Iowa) Nov. 27, 2009: No. 1 Iowa 29, Bucknell 7 (Lewisburg, Pa.) Bucknell vs. Oklahoma State (all-time): Nov. 28, 2010: No. 2 Oklahoma State 39, Bucknell 3 (Stillwater, Okla.) Jan. 29, 2012: No. 2 Oklahoma State 35, Bucknell 6 (Stillwater, Okla.)

On back-to-back days this December, the Bucknell wrestling team will face two programs that have captured a combined 57 national titles. On Dec. 16, the Bison will take part in the first-ever collegiate dual meet in Madison Square Garden history as they will be one of 14 teams to compete in the Grapple at the Garden, presented by Suplay.com, when they square off against 23-time national champion Iowa in New York City. The very next day, Bucknell will host 34-time national champion Oklahoma State in Sojka Pavilion. The Grapple at the Garden will feature Bucknell, Bloomsburg, Chattanooga, Cornell, Drexel, Hofstra, George Mason, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Ohio State and Rutgers. Six of the teams placed in the top 25 at the 2012 NCAA Championship, including Iowa’s third-place showing and Oklahoma State’s sixth-place finish. The Bison and Hawkeyes will be one of six collegiate matches that will begin at 12:30 p.m. “This is an honor and privilege for the Bucknell Wrestling program to be invited to compete in this prestigious event in Madison Square Garden,” said Bison head wrestling coach Dan Wirnsberger. “This is a unique opportunity for our student-athletes to experience such a historic venue and to compete against one of the best wrestling programs of all-time, the Iowa Hawkeyes. We look forward to the challenge.” After taking part in Sunday’s historic event, both Bucknell and Oklahoma State will head to Lewisburg where they will square off Monday evening at

Season Outlook Live It. Those are the words that will be heard more than any other in the Bucknell wrestling room this year. Bison eighth-year head coach Dan Wirnsberger wants his team to Live It, which means to adopt the appropriate lifestyle it takes to be a successful Division I wrestler at a strong academic institution like Bucknell. He knows his wrestlers must buy in in every facet of their lives, from eating right, to practicing right to doing well in school and being a good citizen. Wirnsberger thinks he has a team that will Live It this year and should be much more successful than the 2011-12 Bison that were plagued by a number of injuries to key starters, including veterans Zac Hancock, Jack Ingram and Joe McMullan, who remain with the team despite suffering career-ending injuries a year ago. “Our first five years of competition we had no injuries and then last year it all of a sudden hit us,” explained a bewildered Wirnsberger. “The key for this year will be staying healthy. It’s going to be our job as a coaching staff to make sure we observe and monitor and know when to push and when to pull back.” Bucknell will have a good mix of veterans and youth in 2012-13 as its projected starting lineup includes three seniors, one junior, four sophomores and two freshmen. “We have 10 freshmen this year and they can learn from some of the older guys that are setting the right example,” said Wirnsberger, who is No. 2 on the Bucknell all-time wins list (55). “We’re going to have three seniors in our starting lineup that have a tremendous amount of experience and that will be beneficial.” The Bison list of returning starters includes: Austin Miller (20 starts at 125 in 2011-12), Derrik Russell (20 starts at 141/149), Ray Schlitt (8 starts at 157/165), Corey Lear (15 starts at 165), Stephen McPeek (20 starts at 174), Jamie Westwood (19 starts at 184), Tyler Lyster (20 starts at 197/285) and Joe Stolfi (4 starts at 285). The highlight of Bucknell’s schedule this year comes in mid-December when it travels to Madison Square Garden to face Iowa and then hosts Oklahoma State the very next night in Sojka Pavilion. The Bison will also host conference foe Lehigh in Davis Gym in February. 125 - Projected Starter................................................Austin Miller Miller finished third at the EIWA Championships and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship last year, becoming Bucknell’s first freshman to qualify for nationals since 2009. One of five team captains on this year’s squad, Miller finished his rookie campaign with a 22-14 record and he won six of his last seven bouts entering NCAAs. Miller was one of a handful of Bison that Wirnsberger singled out as having a strong offseason of improvement and it should show through this year as he attempts to improve on his EIWA placing and be the first Bucknell wrestler to advance to NCAAs as both a freshman and sophomore since current assistant coach David Marble and two-time All-American Andy Rendos in 2007 and 2008. Freshman Paul Petrov has the ability to push Miller hard for the starting position, but the rookie will also be in the mix at 133 and is one of the favorites there.

Derrik Russell
133 - Projected Starter.................................................. Paul Petrov Petrov should battle for the starting spot at 133 after the departure of incumbent Shawn Armato, who left the program during preseason. “Paul is an exciting talent to watch,” commented Wirnsberger about the Indiana native. “He’s explosive and his future is bright.” Fellow freshman Mark Edmonds and junior Bob Hauser should compete with Petrov. “It’s just a matter of who puts in the right kind of time in the wrestling room,” said Wirnsberger about the relatively inexperienced group. 141 - Projected Starter.............................................. Derrik Russell Experience is something that is not lacking at 141 pounds as senior captain Russell is favored to hold down the starting spot for a second straight year. A starter at 125 as a freshman, Russell enters his final campaign with 31 career victories, including 13 in dual competition. “The key for Derrik this year is staying healthy,” predicted Wirsberger. “If he can get through the season healthy, he can accomplish anything he wants to accomplish. Derrik is extremely dedicated and he’s been very consistent throughout his four years. You know what you’re going to get from Derrik. He’s not going to take time off in the practice room and he’s always going to give maximum effort.” Backing up Russell will be freshman Jackson Timm, who Wirnsberger noted still needs to gain experience, but will develop throughout his career. 149 - Projected Starter................................................ Adam Healey A familiar face returns to the Bison lineup at 149 pounds. Back with the team after taking last season off is fifth-year senior Adam Healey. The Wilkes Barre, Pa., native won 32 matches over his first three years, wrestling at 141 and 149. “For a guy like Adam, the year off was a huge benefit,” explained Wirnsberger. “When you’re on the outside looking in you can learn, grow and mature from just watching. It makes you excited and hungry to get back to practice and training.” Backing up Healey will be sophomore Joe Orecchio, who is in the process of battling back from an injury that has been deemed possibly career threatening. 157 - Projected Starter.................................................................... ...........Brenan McAllister, Vincent Favia, Ray Schlitt, Robert Schlitt The Bison have plenty of options at 157 and Wirnsberger is waiting for someone to differentiate himself from the rest. The only returning wrestler in the group is sophomore Ray Schlitt, who was 2-12 as a freshman last winter. In the mix with him are freshmen Brenan McAllister, Vincent Favia and Schlitt’s younger brother, Robert. “We are excited about the future with these guys,” said Wirnsberger. “Vincent is athletic and explosive and works really hard. Bobby Schlitt has a tremendous work ethic and is dedicated to the sport. Brenan is a multipletime placewinner in Maryland and has plenty of talent. It’s just a matter of how quickly these guys develop. It comes down to psychological toughness
Three EIWA Placewinners in 2011-12
2012-13 Bucknell Wrestling Season Outlook/Wrestler Profiles 184 - Projected Starter.......................................... Robert Marchese Wirnsberger emphatically stated that the team’s starter at 184 is freshman Robert Marchese. The rookie was a California state champion who posted a 51-0 mark as a senior. “Robert has a great work ethic,” praised Wirnsberger. “At this level, what you get out of this sport is what you put into it and he is one of those guys that will do whatever it takes to be successful. We’re excited to see how quickly he develops. It will be a great year for him to see where he stands against the top competition in the country.” 197 - Projected Starter................................................. Tyler Lyster Like Westwood, Lyster, one of two sophomores to be among the five team captains this year, had to wrestle out of his weight class for much of last year. Splitting time between 197 and 285, Lyster posted a 9-23 record as a rookie. “Tyler gained experience and learned a lot last year,” praised Wirnsberger. “It was his first time going through the process and it wasn’t always easy. He made his greatest gains during the spring and summer and was one of our most consistent performers during the offseason in terms of showing up in the weight room, for conditioning runs and in the practice room. He was named captain based on his commitment to the program.” Backing up both Lyster at 197 and Marchese at 184 will be freshman Colin Farawell, who entered his freshman campaign injured and isn’t expected to be completely healthy until mid-January. 285 - Projected Starter......................................................Joe Stolfi Sophomore Joe Stolfi enters the season as the favorite at 285 pounds. He posted a 2-5 record as a freshman before suffering a season-ending injury in late November. Both victories came at the Navy Classic en route to a thirdplace finish. “Joe is only going to get better as he gains match experience,” predicted Wirnsberger. “He’s on a five-year engineering program, so he’ll be with us four more years.” Backing up Stolfi will be freshman Chuck Boddy, someone Wirnsberger refers to as a true heavyweight. “He’s a quiet, no-nonsense, hard-working wrestler,” described Wirnsberger. “He adds valuable depth and has a good chance to start as well.”

more than physical. Physically, they all have the talent and tools to succeed.” Another newcomer in the mix is freshman Rustin Barrick, a 2012 Pennsylvania state finalist. However, he enters the season with an injury and isn’t expeted to compete until at least December. “We look forward to developing these guys for 157 and 165 over the next four years,” mentioned Wirnsberger. “One of them might eventually get big enough for 174.” 165 - Projected Starter................................................... Corey Lear A regular member of the Bison lineup over his entire career, co-captain Lear will man the 165-pound weight class for a third straight season. The senior, who enters 2012-13 with a 62-35 career record, has a good chance at joining Bucknell’s top-10 list for career victories by the end of the season. Lear is coming off his first NCAA Championship berth. He earned an at-large berth to the national tournament after finishing fifth at the EIWA Championships. At NCAAs he posted a 2-2 record with both losses coming to seeded opponents. “Corey Lear is our guy,” exclaimed Wirnsberger. “I know he’s excited about this year after having success at the national tournament. He knows he’s right there with the top five or six guys in the nation and it’s just a matter of being consistent in his preparation process. The bar is set very high for Corey.” The Bison do not have a lot of depth at 165, but Wirnsberger is confident one of the many options at 157 could bump up to 165 if needed. 174 - Projected Starter........................................... Stephen McPeek The Bison also have plenty of talented experience at 174 in the form of McPeek. The junior’s record has been above .500 each of his first two seasons and his 19 wins a year ago ranked third on the team. “Stephen is our No. 1 guy,” said Wirnsberger. “He gained tremendous experience last year. He’s talented and explosive. The sky is the limit for Stephen if he’s consistent with his preparation and practice habits and doing the little bit extra it takes to be successful at this level. He can be on the podium at the national tournament.” Competing with McPeek will be Westwood, who is moving down to a more natural weight class after wrestling at 184 all last year. The junior posted a 9-20 mark a year ago and he will add plenty of experience and depth.

2012-13 Bucknell Wrestling Coaching Staff
Dan Wirnsberger • Head Coach Michigan State ’95 • Eighth Year
www.BucknellBison.com
• 55-62-2 Bucknell Record • 81-84-2 Career Record
Dan Wirnsberger, who officially became the 15th coach of the Bucknell wrestling program on May 10, 2005, enters his eighth year at the helm of the Orange and Blue in 2012-13. Hired to guide Bucknell’s program back into the national spotlight after a four-year hiatus where it was not a varsity sport, Wirnsberger has succeeded and currently ranks second on the Bison career wins list with 55. Ten Bison have combined for 19 NCAA Championships berths under Wirnsberger’s guidance, while Andy Rendos and Kevin LeValley each became two-time All-Americans. Bucknell has finished above .500 in three of the last six seasons and has recorded at least .500 marks against EIWA competition four times. After spending a transitional year recruiting and laying the groundwork for a successful program, Wirnsberger brought Bucknell back onto the mat in 2006-07 with flying colors. Under Wirnsberger’s direction, the 2006-07 Bison returned to the mat in grand fashion, setting a school record for dual-meet victories by compiling a record of 12-9-1, 3-3-1 in the EIWA, including a 17-16 win over nationally ranked Columbia. At the EIWA tournament, he led the Orange and Blue to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools and saw three Bucknell grapplers earn bids to the NCAA Championships. Facing a tougher schedule in its second season back as a varsity program at Bucknell, Wirnsberger helped the squad to a 9-11-1 mark in 2007-08. The Bison posted a 4-4 mark against EIWA competition. Once again, three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and Bucknell moved up one spot to eighth place at the competitive EIWA Championships. The Bison program took a major stride forward in 2008-09 as Wirnsberger guided Bucknell to a tie for third at the EIWA Championships and helped a school-record six wrestlers earn NCAA berths. Additionally, Andy Rendos became the first Bison to earn All-America honors in 14 years as he placed fifth at NCAAs in the 165-pound weight class. As a team, Bucknell registered 11 wins, giving it a three-year win total of 32, the best stretch in program history.
More milestones were accomplished in 2009-10 as Wirnsberger saw two of his wrestlers earn All-America honors, marking a first for the program. The Bison also tied a school record with 12 victories and finished with an unbeaten EIWA mark. Wirnsberger guided the team to its second consecutive top-five finish at the EIWA Championships as it claimed fourth in the team standings. Highlighting the weekend was Rendos’ individual title in the 165-pound bracket, making him the first EIWA champion in program history. Wirnsberger helped LeValley duplicate Rendos’ feat by winning the 149-pound EIWA title and earn his second consecutive All-America citation in 2010-11. He won the EIWA crown at Sojka Pavilion as Wirnsberger oversaw a program that successfully hosted one of the major conference tournaments in the country. The 2011-12 Bison were ravaged by injuries as six projected starters missed significant time during the campaign. Still, there were plenty of positives for Wirnsberger and the young Bucknell squad that featured just one senior as Corey Lear and Austin Miller became first-time NCAA participants. A three-time wrestling All-American at Michigan State University, Wirnsberger previously served as the head coach of Bloomsburg University’s Division I program from 2002 to 2005. As head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger qualified 10 student-athletes for the NCAA Tournament, including six in 2005, his final season at the helm, and he coached the program’s firstever Olympic Trials qualifier. He helped four Bloomsburg wrestlers capture Eastern Wrestling League titles and six win PSAC crowns. Named the 2005 PSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the team title for the first time since 1990, Wirnsberger’s recruiting classes were ranked 14th and 19th, respectively, in 2003 and 2004, while his first two recruiting classes at Bucknell were ranked 14th and 25th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.). In 2004-05, Bloomsburg posted a 10-6 dual-meet record (4-2 EWL) and crowned three EWL champions while finishing fifth at the league tournament. Prior to becoming head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger spent six years

as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, where he helped coach a team that featured three All-Americans and finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Tournament in 2000 (19th) and 2001 (23rd). The Hokies qualified a school-record five wrestlers for NCAAs in 2000, and the following year the program was invited to compete at the National Team Duals at Penn State. At both Bloomsburg and Virginia Tech, Wirnsberger gained extensive experience in the areas of national recruiting, fundraising and summer camp administration. A 1995 graduate of Michigan State with a degree in criminal justice, Wirnsberger posted a 35-8 record and was the Big Ten Champion and NCAA runner-up at 158 pounds in 1995. That was his third of three straight AllAmerica plaques, and he earned team Most Valuable Wrestler honors. Overall in his career, Wirnsberger compiled a record of 120-44, the third-most wins in school history. In NCAA competition, he logged 11 victories for the Spartans in three trips to nationals. During his career at Michigan State, the team went from a struggling program to a 12th-place national ranking his sophomore year, 25th his junior year and third in the nation his senior season. A three-year captain of the Spartans, Wirnsberger continued his wrestling career at the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club while training for the 1997 World Team Trials. He qualified for the trials after placing sixth at the USA Senior Freestyle Tournament, his first senior competition. Participating at a higher weight class of 167 pounds, Wirnsberger defeated such renowned opponents as two-time NCAA champion Marcus Mollica of Arizona State and Iowa’s NCAA champion Darryl Weber. Wirnsberger began his coaching career with the Mason (Mich.) Youth Wrestling Program. He later moved back to his native South Carolina, where he served as head wrestling coach at Greer High School. In addition to his head coaching duties, Wirnsberger was the junior varsity football coach and taught classes for autistic students at Greer Middle School. Wirnsberger resides in Lewisburg, Pa., with his wife, Dana, a former athletic trainer at Bucknell, and their three sons, Cade (8), Max (5) and Chase (3).

EIWA History
www.BucknellBison.com
The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), as it is known today, had its beginning in 1904. Then, students from a number of schools in the East met and proposed the creation of a group whose responsibility it would be to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a formal sport. One year later wrestlers from Columbia, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale competed in the first EIWA tournament. Under the management of J. Edward Weisenfluh, a student at Penn, the first tournament was held April 7, 1905, in the Gymnasium of Weightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. At this first meeting the Intercollegiate Wrestling Association was born. Thereafter, three meetings were held each year, once just before the tournament, once just after the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected. No team scoring was kept at the first EIWA tournament in 1905. All that was recorded was the total number of bouts won by each wrestler, in the following weight classes: 115, 125, 135, 145, 158, 175 and heavyweight. Based on that system, Yale won, followed in order by Columbia, Princeton and Pennsylvania. Remaining strictly a student organization for three and one-half decades, the group gradually assumed the name “Eastern” to distinguish itself from the faculty-controlled “Western” Association, now known as the Big Ten. Ultimately, after the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, organized in 1938, has since provided formal structure for the EIWA, which now functions as an allied entity of the ECAC. “The Easterns” have survived both as the oldest intercollegiate wrestling organization and as a unique athletic event with unusually widespread spectator appeal. Today, membership in the EIWA numbers 14 schools: American, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers and Sacred Heart.
2011 EIWA Championships Bucknell hosted the 2011 EIWA Championships in Sojka Pavilion, its first conference championship hosting duty since 1997. The two-day event took place in Sojka Pavilion, Bucknell’s primary basketball arena. Thirteen teams visited Lewisburg for the 107th EIWA Championships and Cornell came away with the team title for the fifth consecutive year. The Big Red had four individual champions. Bucknell finished in eighth place in the team standings, but the highlight of the weekend for the Bison was senior All-American Kevin LeValley claiming the program’s second-ever EIWA individual title. The second-seeded LeValley upset top-seeded Kyle Dake of Cornell, who had won the NCAA title at 141 pounds one year earlier, in overtime in front of crowd of nearly 1,700 on a snowy Sunday afternoon. Overall, Bucknell had five placewinners: LeValley (1st at 149), Brantley Hooks (7th at 157), Corey Lear (7th at 165), Rob Waltko (6th at 184) and Jay Hahn (4th at 197).

2012-13 Bucknell Wrestling Hall of Fame
Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame - Wrestling Members The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. Five former wrestlers are among the 229 outstanding members whose contributions to Bucknell athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame. Ed Curran (’88) - Ed Curran was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion during his time as a member of the Bison. Hall of Famer Tom Scotton is the only other Bucknell wrestler to make that claim. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times and was a quarterfinalist in 1986. As a senior, Curran posted a 23-4 record at 134 pounds, and he finished with an impressive career record of 71-20-1, which was then the second-highest victory total at Bucknell. He was the Outstanding Wrestler at both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Cornell Invitational in 1987. Curran was just as successful off the wrestling mat, where he made the Dean’s List every semester, won the prestigious University Prize for Men and was a Second Team Academic All-American. He also earned the ECAC Medallion and graduated magna cum laude. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2005. Bobby Ferraro (’94) - A first-ballot Hall of Fame choice and Bucknell’s first two-time wrestling All-American, Bobby Ferarro graduated with an impressive 118-211 career mat record and four East Coast Wrestling Association gold medals. He became just the third grappler in school history to earn All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 177-pound class at the NCAA Championships during his senior season, and then he repeated the distinction with a seventh-place finish as a graduate student in 1995. Ferraro finished 31-8 in 1994, falling just one victory shy of the school record, and he tied a 37-year-old school mark by recording pins in five straight matches. With a 30-6 record in 1995, Ferraro broke the school career victory record and finished second all-time with 44 falls. In becoming just the second man to win four ECWA titles, Ferraro in 1995 also helped the Bison to their second-ever team championship. He was the ECWA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1992 and never lost a conference bout. A two-time team captain, he won the Christy Mathewson Award as Bucknell’s top senior athlete. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004.
Thomas M. Marchetti (’91) - Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell’s very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds. Marchetti earned three consecutive East Coast Cconference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 ECC Championships. He graduated as Bucknell’s all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark. His 31 victories in 1990-91 were second-most in program history at the time, while his 45-7 dual-match record was third-best all-time. Marchetti remains one of only five Bucknell wrestlers to win 80 percent of his matches over a four-year career, and he also set school marks for pins in a season (19) and career (41). Marchetti was a Freshman All-American in his first year at Bucknell and was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009. Thomas M. Scotton (’78) - Named All-East by National Mat News in 1978 and selected Bucknell’s outstanding wrestler four times, Scotton never lost a dual collegiate match on his way to three ECC championships and appearances at the NCAA Championships and holds several Bison mat records. Twice co-captain, he had a career record of 89-4-1. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

He began his football career at Bucknell as a fullback, but was moved to defensive end at the beginning of his junior year. He was twice named to the All-Pennsylvania second team and All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team at the new position. The top accounting student in his Bucknell class and a cum laude graduate, Kaufmann received an MBA from Harvard and later returned to the ministry. The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
