What it Means to be a Bison ...

The term “student-athlete signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a studentathlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. t

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the nation.

t

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

t

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

t

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

t

Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Coaches Profiles Rebecca Helt is in her 16th season as head coach of the women’s tennis team, and her 11th at the helm of the men’s program. As coach of the Bison women’s squad, Helt has notched a 165-150 record. With the men’s squad, she has recorded a 91-128 mark. Head Coach Helt led the Bison women’s squad to six consecutive Patriot League champi16th Season (Women) onship matches between 2005 and 2010, while in 2008 the men finished above for the first time since 2002. 11th Season (Men) .500Perhaps the highlight of Helt’s coaching career came last season when she led Gregg Cohenca and Evan Zimmer to the NCAA Championships in doubles Lock Haven ’90 for the first time both Bucknell and Patriot League history. During her career, Helt has coached 17 All-Patriot League singles players and two conference players of the year. Included on the all-league list are current Bison Josh Katten, the first Bucknell men’s player to claim honors as a freshman, and Zimmer. Additionally 2011 graduate and all-time wins leader Lauren Lucido was a First Team All-Patriot League choice in her senior campaign, becoming only the second Bison player to earn honors four times in her career. Also topping Helt’s list of multi-year selections are Tania Varela, Bucknell’s first four-time honoree and the 2010 conference player of the year, as well as Paulina Gamboa (2007-09), Veronica Brown (2005-06), Dumitrita Iepuras (2009-10, 2012) and Nada Curcic (2004-05). Curcic also became the first Patriot League Player of the Year in the history of the program in 2005. Ira Reibeisen, who ranks second on Bucknell’s all-time men’s wins list, earned three consecutive First Team All-Patriot League honors, the first Bison to ever accomplish that feat. Helt also coached one all-league doubles team in Kerry Callaghan and Kristin Inglis, while Callaghan was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Helt also had the opportunity to coach a Patriot League Sportsmanship Award winner, Asher Salam. A 1990 graduate of Lock Haven University, Helt earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism while competing for the Lock Haven tennis team. Following her college graduation, Helt earned a teaching certification from the United States Professional Tennis Registry and began teaching part time while working for STEP, Inc., in its wilderness-based team building program. In 1994, Helt was hired as the assistant pro at West Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa. She continued her duties at West Branch while coaching the girls’ tennis team at Williamsport High School. Two years later, Helt was hired at the Doylestown Racquet Club in Doylestown, Pa. She has won three different raquetball state championships. Helt took over the women’s coaching reins at Bucknell in 1997, and in 2002 she was named the Bison men’s coach as well. Helt is also involved in tennis on the national level as an NCAA chair for women’s tennis. Helt continues her involvement in the game outside of Bucknell’s program, including receiving a generous grant from USTA to promote tennis in the local community. Helt also volunteers during the summer as a Special Olympics sport advisor, where she works with various events.

Men’s Season Preview

Senior Captain Kelly Morque

That Bucknell had such doubles success last season comes as no surprise to those on the practice courts with the Bison. The first to admit that her team often struggled in doubles play in previous years, Helt made the necessary adjustments and the results followed. “We didn’t have a lot of natural doubles players coming onto the team, so last year we really focused hard on doubles and that

year’s worth of work and focus really paid off for us in the end.” Specifically that work could be seen as the Bison won 14 of a possible 24 doubles points. Bucknell was also claimed all five doubles points in Patriot League regular-season action. “All three seniors have learned so much over the past three years and not only have they learned, but they have learned to apply it and they’ve learned to teach it to the younger guys,” Helt praised. “I do look for them to leave a few marks before they leave.” Younger but no less experienced is the junior class of Scott Bernstein, Aidan Lynch, Kyle Rosen and Chris Tortora. Rosen earned a regular spot among singles starters and went 17-14 playing at the bottom half of the lineup a year ago. Those 17 victories rank as the third-most among returning Bison behind only Katten and Zimmer.

Junior Scott Bernstein

Tortora saw his greatest success in the fall, claiming 10 of his 11 singles wins and all six of his doubles victories during tournament play. Lynch, on the other hand, worked his way into the lineup later in the year, catapulting to No. 1 doubles with Cohenca late in the spring. “We have a solid group of juniors who are getting a little bit tired of waiting,” said Helt. “They’re ready to make a solid impact once and for all, so they’ve worked hard over the summer.” Bucknell’s group of underclassmen includes sophomores Octavio Canibe, Jonathan DeFrancesch and Roy Skinner, and the lone incoming rookie Bybel. Canibe showed flashes of what he would accomplish during the fall season. As a freshman, he went 10-2 in singles, made two tournament finals and finished with one title. He ultimately closed his debut season 17-12 in singles playing primarily in the middle of the lineup. DeFrancesch joined the team in the spring and is expected to continue to contribute in the new season. “Those guys have come back a lot more physically fit than they were last year,” complimented Helt. “The two of them will definitely make an impact this year.” Despite being new to the group, Bybel will be looked to almost immediately. The highest ranked junior player ever to grace Bucknell’s roster, the freshman is likely to push his teammates from the start and contend for a position at the top of the lineup.

2012-13 Men’s & Women’s Tennis Guide

Maturity, experience and heightened expectations are the name of the game for Bucknell men’s tennis in 2012-13. The Bison return all but two of their letterwinners from a year ago, and in that mix of those back for another turn is a trio of seniors who have long solidified themselves as some of the most noteworthy players in recent history. With the help of veteran captains Josh Katten, Kelly Morque and Evan Zimmer as well as highly touted freshman Nick Bybel, Bucknell is poised to make some noise in the Patriot League and make a run at a championship title. “If things go the way we are planning, if we execute our plan, I feel this could be the year we get to the finals,” said Rebecca Helt, who is entering her 11th season as the Bison men’s head coach. “It just comes down to execution.” Bucknell should have the tools to make sure that happens, and few will gather more attention than the Orange and Blue’s senior triumvirate. Katten and Zimmer return this season having claimed more victories than any other Bison during the 201112 season. Zimmer, who made up one-half of the Bison doubles duo that earned the program’s first-ever NCAA Championships berth last spring, finished his junior campaign with 50 combined wins. Of those, 31 came on the doubles court, which became the new Bucknell standard for most doubles wins in a single season. A Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, Zimmer went 20-6 with recent graduate and fellow NCAA Championships participant Gregg Cohenca and 11-1 with Katten. Katten finished his junior season with 47 total victories. His 22-11 record in singles gave him the most wins among Bison last year, but his 25-10 doubles mark was nothing to scoff at either. Like Zimmer, Katten also ranks among the best Bison in singleseason doubles wins, finishing the year tied for fourth. He and Zimmer were also 5-0 in doubles together during regular-season conference play, and both Bison surpassed the 100 career combined wins mark last spring. Not to be left out, Morque has been making his presence felt in the lineup more and more over the years. His wins total in singles has increased with each passing season and his doubles record, which was 18-14 last year, has consistently been among the best on the team.

2012-13 Men’s & Women’s Tennis Guide

Women’s Season Preview In the 2012-13 season, the Bucknell women’s tennis team brings back a squad of underclassmen who have learned the ropes from last year’s tie for third place with Colgate in the Patriot League standings. With a roster of 10 underclassmen, the Bison will turn to senior Daria Tuzhikova and junior captains Elena Vidrascu and Elizabeth Morgan to lead the way and make the push back into the top of the league standings. Tuzhikova heads into her final season with 54 career victories. The senior currently ranks No. 30 on Bucknell’s all-time wins list and needs just six more victories to move into the top 25. The majority of Tuzhikova’s wins come from her strong doubles play as she has accumulated 39 wins her first three years. Tuzhikova, who missed the 2011 fall season while studying abroad in France, looks to build her resume in the fall tournaments before rolling into the prime spring schedule.

sive starts to their careers. Jen Bush and Alyssa McAndrew had stout performances last fall, winning doubles at the Bucknell Invitational which turned out to be the team’s only tournament title. Lydia Colvin began her freshman campaign with a slow start during the fall of 2011, but cemented her place in the singles dual matches with a 7-14 record during the spring. The Patriot League has been dominated by the U.S. Naval and Military academies over the past few seasons, but Helt believes the team is poised to make another run into the top half of the Patriot League standings. “We fought hard toward the end of the season to come back and tie for third with Colgate,” said Helt. “This year I think we will get back up there even though the academies will have a bit of an edge, but we will be back up there in the top half.” This is the second straight year that the women’s squad will have a team dominated by underclassmen. The fall tournaments will be a critical time for the first- and second-year players to continue to perfect their form and gain valuable experience before a spring season that boasts some very strong teams. The team welcomes incoming players in Maria Cioffi, Ellie Fraser, Sam Madnick and Stephanie Pino. This group of incoming rookies has combined to win many accolades in the junior tennis and high school ranks, which include two All-State recipients, one doubles state champion and nine league or district championships.

Junior Captain Elena Vidrascu

Vidrascu finished last season with a 12-15 singles record, tying her for the most on the team with former teammate Dumitrita Iepuras with the majority of her play coming in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Vidrascu is five singles, two doubles and seven combined wins from cracking into the top 25 in each category. With two years of tennis behind her, Vidrascu’s maturity will play a large role in captaining the team through tough mental on-court situations. With the likes of Iepuras, Lauren Lucido and Tania Varela all graduating over the past three seasons, the team looks to fill those voids with the youthful talent that has arrived on campus. The three have left big shoes to fill after combining for 435 career wins. The women’s rookie class will challenge the sophomores throughout the season looking to earn themselves a role in the top six on the team. The young Bison look to prepare themselves for a demanding season in which they are much more experienced physically and mentally from just a year ago. “The returning ladies learned a great deal about the transition from junior tennis to college tennis and worked really hard over the summer,” said head coach Rebecca Helt, who is entering her 16th season as the women’s head coach. “All those girls are back ready to apply that now and take the next step up.” Several returning sophomores look to continue the impres-

Freshman Maria Cioffi

Ci ffi makes k a short h t journey j f h hometown h t Will Wi Cioffi from her off Williamsport, Pa., to Bucknell. She joins the Bison after a successful career playing for South Williamsport High School where she was an All-State tennis player finishing fourth in the boys’ state tournament, making her the first female to win a round at the Pennsylvania state championship while playing for a boys’ team. One of Helt’s goals is to focus on building the team’s mental toughness for the grind of the spring season. This will come through setting the tone in doubles play and trying to earn that first team point. She knows that this year will be another challenge for the women’s side but is eager to see them progress as a unit throughout the season.

President of the American Platform Tennis Association, Baird is a five-time national champion in the sport. Baird entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Ed Hess

Alexander Anderson

Marjorie A. Deck (’73): Co-captain of the field hockey and basketball teams, Deck was also undefeated in tennis dual matches in her career and ranked fifth in the East as a senior. Deck is often referred to as one of the pioneers of women’s tennis at Bucknell having played on the team before women’s sports gained varsity status in the fall of 1973. Women’s tennis was given varsity status only months after Deck’s graduation. Her success on the club team had much to do with the upgrade of women’s tennis to varsity status. Deck entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989. Ed Hess (’90): One of the best tennis players in Bucknell history, Hess held the school record for singles victories at 60 until the fall of 2007, while accumulating only three singles losses during his career. He stands 12th on the singles-doubles combined win list at 101 and is 14th on Bucknell’s all-time doubles victories list. Hess won the East Coast Conference singles title in 1987, 1989 and 1990, in addition to two conference doubles titles. His teams won three ECC team championships, posting a 38-12 record in those seasons. Hess entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003. Rose Ewan: One of Bucknell’s leading promoters of women’s athletics, Ewan was involved with Bison Athletics in various capacities for 25 years. As head women’s tennis coach for 18 years (1979-97), she compiled a 183-120-1 dual-match record and led the Bison to Patriot League championships in 1992 and 1994. Ewan also was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year following both championship seasons. From September 1991 to October 1992 the team won a school-record 25 straight matches. The 1991-92 team finished 16-1 and was part of a five-year stretch in which it went 64-9. Upon arriving at Bucknell in 1978, Ewan served as head coach of the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams for one year, coordinator of women’s athletics in 1980, associate director of athletics in 1990 and eventually associate athletic director for recreation services prior to her retirement. Most importantly, Ewan successfully guided women’s athletics at Bucknell through a difficult transition period, including the merger of the men’s and women’s athletic departments. Ewan entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2010.

William C. Bartol (1887): William Bartol, a pioneer of baseball and tennis at Bucknell and head of the mathematics department for 46 years, is generally given credit for creating the nickname “Bisons” for Bucknell athletic teams. An outstanding student and athlete as an undergraduate, he also served as head of the engineering department and as director of the observatory. Bartol played on baseball teams that lost only one game in four years while helping raise funds in support of the Athletic Association. About 1910, he suggested that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted for Bucknell teams because of the proximity of the campus to areas populated by the American bison in the late 1700s. Bartol, who died in 1940 at the age of 92, was connected with Bucknell longer than any other person in its history as a student, teacher and university historian. Bartol entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.

PATRIOT LEAGUE

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 82 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores. • Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women’s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men’s crown. • Lehigh, a No. 15 seed, defeated No. 2 Duke 75-70 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game on March 16. The victory is up for a “best upset” award for the ESPYs. • Colgate’s Peter Baum became the first player in Patriot League history to win the Tewaaraton Award as the top collegiate lacrosse player, and also claimed the Lt. Enners Award for the same distinction. • Colgate’s Elise DeRoo was named the Patriot League Female ScholarAthlete of the Year, while Army’s Brendan Buckley won the Male ScholarAthlete of the Year award. • DeRoo was also one of two nominees from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, along with Navy’s Jess Palacio. • Ten student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-Americans, including first-team selections for Army’s Brendan Buckley (lacrosse), Army’s Zach Price (Baseball), Bucknell’s Tim Bolte (Football) and Lehigh’s Jennifer Colquhoun (Softball). • 48 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition. • It was the first time in Patriot League men’s basketball history that three teams played in the postseason tournament: Lehigh (NCAA), Bucknell (NIT), American (CIT). • For just the second time in history, two teams won a postseason game as Bucknell also beat Arizona 65-54 in the first round of the NIT on March 14. • American became the first women’s basketball team to post a perfect 14-0 mark in Patriot League play. • Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum was named ECAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as well as an honorable mention AP All-American. • Georgetown’s Andrew Schaetzke finished fourth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, was honored as ECAC FCS Defensive Player of the Year and became the ninth player in Patriot League history to earn consensus FCS All-America honors from the four major awarding organizations. • Eight players were named FCS All-Americans overall, with Lehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Bucknell’s Bryce Robertson joining Schaetzke as first-

team selections. • Colgate and Lehigh both finished in the top 10 of the final Nike/ Inside Lacrosse Media rankings, with the Raiders at No. 8 and the Mountain Hawks at No. 9. • Navy’s Laura Gorinski was invited to the NCAA Women’s Swimming Championships, where she competed in the 200 IM and 100 and 200 breaststroke events. • Army finished the season with 41 wins, which is the most by any Patriot League baseball team in history. • Five players were selected in the first 23 rounds of the MLB Draft, the most in that span in Patriot League history. • Colgate’s Chris Johnson became the fourth men’s cross country runner to represent the Patriot League in the NCAA championships. • Four Patriot Leaguers signed NFL free agent contracts for the 2012 season. • Army’s William Park became the second Patriot Leaguer ever to earn an appearance in the NCAA Golf Regionals. • Colgate’s Jimmy McLaughlin and Steven Miller moved on to play for Major League Soccer clubs, as McLaughlin was signed by the Philadelphia Union and Miller was picked in the supplemental draft by the Montreal Impact. • Bucknell’s Brendan Burgdorf earned NSCAA Scholar All-America first-team honors while Army’s Jeff Pickett made the third team.

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting studentathletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of studentathletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges studentathletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. BUCKNELL VARSITY TENNIS COURTS

THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 22 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 22 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and new indoor instructional facility; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the Becker Field softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.
