Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of five Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

What it Means to

BE A BISON

“... THE PURSUIT OF ATHLETICS IN COLLEGE NEED NOT INTERFERE WITH A FELLOW’S STUDIES, AND IF YOU GIVE A BOY A WELL-DEVELOPED BODY HIS BRAIN WILL GET THE BENEFIT OF IT.” — CHRISTY MATHEWSON, IN HIS BOOK WON IN THE NINTH, WRITTEN IN 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the fall of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 322 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this “Leadership Summit” is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

BUCKNELL DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Stephanie Ovalle

Above-.500 Record in Five of Last Seven Years

Sophomore Julianne Valdes was one of three Bison to tally at least 80 points last year, along with Kennan and two-time Honorable Mention All-American Kandis Canonica, who has since graduated. That trio combined for 145 of the squad’s 319 goals (45.5%), 115 of 242 assists (47.5%) and 260 of 561 points (46.3%), with Valdes contributing 47 goals, 38 assists and 85 points. She earned the team’s Rookie of the Year Award, drew 42 ejections and was named the CWPA Western Division Rookie of the Week twice. “Julianne is not going to be playing center anymore, but I expect her to be an offensive and defensive threat,” commented McBride. “I expect her steals to go up. I expect her goals to go up. I expect her to play a lot of minutes. She is a joy to coach and has a great work ethic. If I could take whatever is in her and put it in everyone else, we’d be in great shape.” While Bucknell does have plenty of offensive firepower returning with five players who netted at least 22 goals last year back with an additional year of experience, McBride knows the team will win games on the defensive end. Luckily he has the luxury of two experienced goalies on his roster to anchor that defense. Senior Brittany Connell and sophomore Rena Heim split time in cage nearly equally last year. Connell recorded more saves (126), while Heim’s save percentage of .480 was better. However, McBride expects one of them to win the starting job this year. “Having two experienced goalies has certainly made practices better,” remarked McBride. “Both are super competitive and want to be the starter. I explained to both that just because someone isn’t named the starter doesn’t mean they stop. The backup will be just one small injury away from becoming the starter.” Bucknell had a very strong rookie class a year ago, headlined by Valdes. But there were other important cogs, including Mackenzie Ferry, Heather Smith and Stephanie Ovalle. That trio combined for 65 goals, 34 assists and 99 points. Smith was a regular member of the starting lineup, while Ferry and Ovalle were valuable reserves. “We’re trying to move Heather out of the defensive two-meter position and give that to Becca Shopiro and a couple others,” explained McBride. “Heather is going to be a much better perimeter defender, where she can use her speed on counter attacks. “I recruited Mackenzie at Brown, but she came here instead,” mentioned McBride. “I’m glad I finally get to coach her. She could be one of the top players on the East Coast. The sky is the limit for her.” That young talent will continue to pair with veterans to form a wellbalanced Bison team as Shopiro, a senior, and juniors Shannon Carroll, Krystle Morgan and Tara Murao will fill valuable roles. Shopiro is a physical defensive presence, while Morgan tallied 11 goals in eight late-season games last year after missing time with an injury. Carroll was one of eight Bison to appear in all 31 games, while Murao provides energy and toughness, especially on the defensive end. Bucknell’s 20-person roster also includes five freshmen and McBride thinks the majority of those newcomers will be impact players. Among the most notable rookies is Emily Norton, who is a member of the Bison swimming and diving team and who has two brothers that are on Bucknell’s men’s water polo squad. Additionally, McBride expects big things from Taylor Barnett, Sayeh Bozorghadad and Barbara Peterson.

After enduring its first below-.500 finish since 2007 last spring, Bucknell is ready to get back on the winning side this season. It is firstyear head coach John McBride’s expectation to bring the team there. “There is a different kind of intensity being brought to the program and the team seems to be responding very well,” commented McBride, who came to Bucknell last May after seven years as an assistant coach at Brown. McBride, who guided the Bison men to a strong 15-10 mark in the fall, certainly has high expectations for the squad as he lined up a challenging schedule that features eight teams listed in the preseason national top 10. “The previous coaching staff did a great job recruiting and our freshman class is really strong,” praised McBride. “This team is loaded with talent. It didn’t always show through last year, but there is a lot of talent.” In addition to talent, the Bison have plenty of experience with 15 letterwinners and five starters returning. A number of players received playing time last year due to a substitution pattern McBride likened to hockey lines, meaning he has no shortage of veterans to choose from when doling out minutes. While there is a lot of talent and experience at his disposal, McBride expects to shorten his rotation and have every player fill a role. “In the past, players never really understood what their role was during a game,” said McBride. “They were all expected to play every position. We have narrowed it down to more of a role-playing team, where everybody understands what they have to do when they enter the water.” McBride thinks the defined roles and a stronger focus on defensive intensity will lead to positive results and more consistent play. “The one thing noticeable and surprising to me is that this team played catch up in every game last year,” mentioned McBride. “They lost the first half of almost every game and spent the entire time trying to catch up. We need a core group fired up and ready to go at the start so we can go at a faster pace. We need to throw the first punch ourselves.” Senior co-captains Hallie Kennan and Amanda Skonezney are expected to be the top leaders on the team in addition to being two of the more productive players in the pool. Kennan is the squad’s leading returning scorer, having tallied a team-high 55 goals and career highs in assists (32) and points (87) last season. The left-hander ranks 12th in program history in career goals (126) and is tied for 12th in assists (69). “I expect Hallie to be a leader in the pool, set the example and work hard. Her leadership skills are great and the team really responds when she talks,” said McBride. “I never expect the leading scorer from one year to come back and be the leading scorer again due to the defensive focus changing, but she will still be a key for us on the offensive end.” One of the faster swimmers on the team, Skonezney holds the Bucknell record for career sprints won (145) and is 12th all-time in games started (86) as she enters her fourth year as a starter. A consistent player, Skonezney has netted between 22 and 27 goals and 40 and 46 points in each of her first three campaigns. “Amanda is a huge role player for us,” complimented McBride. “She is physical and very aggressive while giving us an outside threat and the ability to go inside to the center position. Amanda also has a high water polo IQ. She’s just very good at everything.”

John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the last seven years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. National Team, serving as head coach of the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009. Less than a year into his Bucknell tenure, McBride already has plenty of experience coaching the Bison. He guided the Bucknell men to a 15-10 record and a fifth-place showing at the Eastern Championship this past fall. While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. The men’s squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division title, its first conference crown in nearly 25 years. Additionally, the team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and finished as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship. On the women’s side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Championship titles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Championship, the best showing at Brown since 2001. Both the men’s and women’s squads appeared regularly in the national top-20 rankings during McBride’s tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Division selections and 22 All-East players. Additionally, three Bears earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Brown’s men’s team has had the highest team grade-point average in the nation for four years, while the women have ranked in the top three nationally four times. “I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to be the head coach of the men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell,” said McBride at the time of his hiring. “I am looking forward to settling into Lewisburg and getting started with the 2011-12 seasons. Bucknell prides itself on balancing academics and athletics and having coached in a very rigorous academic environment for the last seven years should make the transition much easier. I am very anxious to get on the pool deck and begin coaching the talented student-athletes that are members of both the men’s and women’s programs at Bucknell.” A goalie on the U.S. National “B” Team in 1993, McBride has become a recognizable face in National Team circles. In addition to his duties as the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he was recently named the head coach of the Southeast Zone Olympic Development Program. McBride has also served as an evaluator and coach at the women’s Speedo Top 40 Camp at Harvard. Among his many responsibilities with the National Teams, McBride evaluates and coaches the top 16 men from the East Coast to compete for spots on the U.S. National Team. He has also coached regional teams comprised of the best Northern California collegiate players and helps the U.S. Junior National Team Coaches bring the best players to represent the U.S. in international competitions. An accomplished goalie during his playing days at Rhode Island, McBride was a three-time First Team All-New England selection and was twice a First Team All-East honoree. Following his graduation from Rhode Island with a degree in speech communications, McBride attended the Rhode Island Department of Corrections Academy and the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility Corrections Academy and eventually graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in 1996. He then served as a patrolman and SWAT officer for the North Providence Police from 1996 to 2004. McBride got his start in coaching in 2001 when he founded the New-

port Lady Tritons Water Polo Club. He proceeded to coach the club, which was made up of high schoolaged players, until 2003. At that time, McBride founded the Ocean State Masters Swim Team, which featured more than 100 athletes who competed in master’s swim meets and triathlons all over the world. McBride’s most recent start-up project was the Bruno Water Polo Club, which he began as a nonprofit organization in Providence, R.I., in 2007. The club b gives inner-city youth h an opportunity to enjoy the sport of water polo. McBride and his wife, Sam, have two daughters, Grace (11) and Lily (9).

ATHLETIC TRAINER SOUTHERN ILLINOIS ’06 Allen Mardis, a member of the United State Marine Corps from 1998-2003, joined the Bison training staff in 2009 after spending three years as a graduate assistant athletic training intern at Fresno State. He works closely with the Bucknell water polo, tennis and men’s basketball programs. While in California, Mardis worked closely with the Bulldogs’ softball team, organized and administered preseason physicals for more than 600 student-athletes and had roles in medical coverage for the football team during preseason practice and during home games. In the summer of 2008, Mardis was an athletic trainer for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Rookie Level team. He got his first taste of professional baseball in 2005 when he served as an athletic training intern for the Schaumburg Flyers. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Mardis earned an associate’s degree from Campbell University in 2002 and a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois in 2006. A 2008 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, who helped the Bears to the 2006 NCAA title, Marty Matthies joined the Bucknell water polo coaching staff in the summer of 2011. Matthies assists Bison head coach John McBride with all facets of both the men’s and women’s water polo programs. A three-time All-American at Cal, including a second-team honoree as a senior, Matthies piled up 63 career goals during his college career while also serving as one of the squad’s top defenders. A two-time AllMountain Pacific Sports Federation honoree, he was a team co-captain as a senior when Cal knocked off USC for its first of two consecutive NCAA titles. Matthies, who was named to the All-NCAA Team in 2006, was also part of the 2007 championship team, serving as a student assistant coach. In addition to his four years at national power Cal, Matthies has an extensive background in international water polo, having played on the USA National Youth, National Junior and National Senior Teams. Additionally, Matthies has played professionally in New Zealand (Harbour City Hawks in 2009) and Brazil (Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas in 2010). Matthies got his first taste of coaching during his undergraduate days at Cal and has already held a number of other posts. He was a volunteer assistant at Pepperdine in 2009, was the head boys’ coach at Westlake High School in 2010 and has been involved with the Olympic Development Program as the 18U Coastal Zone Coach. Additionally, Matthies has served as the technical director for South Coast Aquatics, coaching the 18U and 16U boys’ and girls’ teams, and the Lamorinda Water Polo Club Head Coach of the women’s 20U, 18U and Senior Teams. A four-year veteran high school referee in his home state, Matthies

was a two-year high school All-American who was the California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year and the Los Angeles Times High School Player of the Year in 2001 at Harvard-Westlake. Matthies, 26, comes from a highly athletic family as his father, Dan, played water polo at Long Beach State, and his mother, Nina, was a standout volleyball player at UCLA and is now the head women’s volleyball coach at Pepperdine. His brother, Mo, played water polo at Pepperdine from 2000-03. Matthies earned his degree from California in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on maturation in modern society.

The strength & conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY RECEIVES MAJOR DONATION FROM DAN AND CHRIS RICHARDS TO BOLSTER MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WATER POLO PROGRAMS The men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell University will be greatly bolstered thanks to a $1.5 million commitment made by Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards in the summer of 2009. The pledge was made in honor of Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from 1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell. As the Richards’ multi-year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. The Russell Endowment will provide a lasting memorial honoring the lifetime contributions of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Bucknell’s varsity water polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne ‘62 to honor former coach and director of athletics Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradition of the varsity aquatics programs at Bucknell.

MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards have created a matching challenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swimming and diving to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell. Up to a limit of $250,000, the Richards will accelerate payment of their multi-year $1.5 million pledge to the new “Russell Endowment” by matching qualifying gifts and pledges made by others, as follows: 1. Qualifying gifts and pledges made by individual donors, of... 2. at least $5,000 to an endowment fund named to honor Coach Dick Russell in support of the water polo and/or swimming and diving programs, 3. paid on or before June 30, 2012, plus... 4. corporate matching gifts resulting from qualified gifts and payments made by individual donors... 5. ...will be matched by accelerated pledge payments from Dan and Chris Richards into the Russell Endowment no later than Dec. 31 of the second year following the year in which the qualified gift or payment is received • Contact Todd Newcomb (570-577-1771; tnewcomb@bucknell.edu) with questions

BUCKNELL FAST FACTS

CWPA INFORMATION The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid-Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow. Bucknell is a member of the CWPA Southern Division along with Brown, George Washington, Harvard, Mercyhurst and Princeton.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
