Bison Good Sports In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

Being A Bison

What it means to

Be a Bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

Junior Jessica Serrato Patriot League Academic Honor Roll

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics setting the stAndArd of excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 390 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 252 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the fall 2011 semester.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2012.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 22-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 15 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Bison Volleyball

The construction of the Kenneth Langone Athletics and Recreation Center specifically impacted the Bucknell volleyball program in a significant way. The relocation of the Bison men’s and women’s basketball teams to Sojka Pavilion left Davis Gym as the premier volleyball and wrestling facility. The venerable 1,000-seat arena was dedicated on June 13, 1938 and has hosted Bison athletic events for more than 70 years. The Davis Gym hardwood was recently refinished and painted with volleyball boundaries as its primary color scheme. The team’s spacious locker room and coaches offices are located just off the main playing floor. A new scoreboard was added in 2007, as well.

The resurgence of Bucknell’s volleyball program can be traced directly to Cindy Opalski’s arrival in 1990. Granted the turnaround didn’t come overnight, 1st 20-win season in 11 yrs. but after a couple of years of growing pains and some energetic recruiting BU’s 1st Patriot League title efforts, Opalski has transformed the Bison volleyball program into one of the Patriot League Champions top programs in the East. Bucknell made NCAA Tournament appearances in PL Champs/NCAA Tournament both 1998 and 2000 and has averaged more than 15 victories since 1993. Under Opalski the Bison were recognized as the most improved team in PL Champs/NCAA Tournament the nation by Volleyball Monthly in 1993; recorded the best record in school history in 1995 at 26-7; won the first-ever Patriot League automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA Tournament; and in 2003 posted a school-record 11 Patriot School record 11 PL wins League wins en route to a second-place finish. The Bison have qualified for the PL Tournament in 19 of 22 years in the league under Opalski, who has been named the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 1995, 2000 and 2003. 250th win as Bucknell’s coach Opalski won her 300th career match in 2004, and with 395 career victories is the fourth-winningest active volleyball coach in the Patriot League. In 2011, Opalski won 300th win as Bucknell’s coach her 300th match as coach of the Bison when Bucknell defeated Coppin State in four sets at Davis Gym. Now in her 27th season as a collegiate head coach, Opalski wrote essentially the same script at Clarion University. In her four years there (1986-1989), Opalski led Clarion to a record of 92-48 and the school’s first-ever conference title in 1988. She was selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in the Atlantic Region, and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year during her tenure. Opalski graduated from Southern Connecticut State in 1977 and earned a Master of Science degree from that school in 1984. A savvy outside hitter for the Owls, she played in two AIAW national tournaments and captained the squad in her senior year. From 1979 through 1985 as head coach at Maloney High School in her native Meriden, Conn., Opalski led that school to two state titles. Her resume there included six undefeated regular seasons and an eye-popping overall record of 147-11. Opalski’s success in volleyball has been documented by her 2006 induction as a player to the F.T. Maloney High School Hall of Fame and as a coach in the Connecticut Scholastic Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame soon afterwards. Opalski worked with the U.S. Volleyball Junior Olympic Program in the 1980s, coaching the Connecticut team at numerous national qualifiers. For five years she coached and trained some of the top players that have ever come out of the Nutmeg State as well as several teams that qualified for the USVBA National tournament. During the summer, Opalski serves as a technical consultant at numerous volleyball camps throughout the East, in addition to directing the Bentley College and Kutztown University Volleyball camps.

Coach Profiles/ Mission Statement Anna Allison begins her eighth season as a member of the Bison volleyball coaching staff this fall. A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a member of a prominent volleyball family, Allison is a 2004 graduate of Oral Roberts University, where she was one of the top setters in Golden Eagles’ history. In 2006, she helped guide former Bucknell setter Shannon Pitsch to a school single-season record total in assists (1,199), which ranked first in the Patriot League, and eventually the career record (3,597) as well. Allison was a First Team All-Mid Continent Conference selection three times and was named Setter of the Year in 2000 and 2002. As a senior in 2002 she shattered the Oral Roberts career assists record as well as the Mid-Con career service aces record. Oral Roberts won four straight league titles and played in four NCAA Tournaments during her playing days. A two-time team captain, Allison was also an outstanding student and earned Scholar-Athlete honors while successfully completing degrees in advertising and marketing communications. A lifelong student of the sport of volleyball, Allison’s enthusiasm and commitment to the game was influenced by her father, Antonio Carlos Moreno, who played for the Brazilian national team for 16 years and participated in four Olympic Games. Anna’s twin brother, Carlos, was an All-America setter who earned AVCA Player of the Year honors while leading BYU to the 2004 NCAA men’s national championship. In 2003-04 Allison served as graduate assistant coach at Oral Roberts, where she worked closely with the Golden Eagles’ setters and assisted in scouting and recruiting. Throughout her undergraduate career she coached the ORU Club team, featuring players aged 12 to 18, as well as the 16-18 Tulsa Volleyball Club. In her native Brazil, Allison was a regular coach at the S.P. Volleyball Camp and has worked as director, recruiting manager and coach with the Moreno Corp. Over the summers, she has served on the staff of the Gold Medal Square Camp as well as the Bentley College Camp. “Our team and future recruiting classes will clearly benefit from Anna’s vast international experience and technical knowledge of the game,” said Cindy Opalski at the time of Allison’s hiring. “Her technical knowledge will benefit our setters and enhance our offensive production. I believe that she is one of the best young coaches in the country.”

A 2007 graduate of St. John’s University and an All-BIG EAST selection with the Red Storm, Caitlin Rimgaila became the newest member of the Bucknell volleyball staff during the summer of 2012. Rimgaila joins the Bison having coached most recently at Pope John Paul II High School in Royersford, Pa., where she led the squad to a top-10 state ranking. As a student-athlete at St. John’s, Rimgaila captained the Red Storm to an undefeated conference run in 2006. The same year, the team achieved a top-25 national ranking for the first time in program history and she was named Second Team All-BIG EAST. Off the court, Rimgaila was named the 2006 BIG EAST/Aeropostale Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also a three-time selection as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star and to the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society for student-athletes. She capped off her career with a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection as a senior. She also co-founded STAR (Students Teaching Athletes Responsibility) at St. John’s. Since graduating with a degree in communication science and a minor in business administration, Rimgaila has served as head coach at Pope John Paul II and with the Synergy Volleyball Club and Philadelphia Volleyball Academy. Her coaching experience also includes stints as an assistant at The Agnes Irwin School (Pa.) and SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology. Most recently Rimgaila worked as a public relations account manager at Diccicco Battista Communications.

Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores. • Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women’s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men’s crown. • Lehigh, a No. 15 seed, defeated No. 2 Duke 75-70 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game on March 16. The victory is up for a “best upset” award for the ESPYs. • Colgate’s Peter Baum became the first player in Patriot League history to win the Tewaaraton Award as the top collegiate lacrosse player, and also claimed the Lt. Enners Award for the same distinction. • Colgate’s Elise DeRoo was named the Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Army’s Brendan Buckley won the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. • DeRoo was also one of two nominees from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, along with Navy’s Jess Palacio. • Ten student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-Americans, including first-team selections for Army’s Brendan Buckley (lacrosse), Army’s Zach Price (Baseball), Bucknell’s Tim Bolte (Football) and Lehigh’s Jennifer Colquhoun (Softball). • 48 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition.

• It was the first time in Patriot League men’s basketball history that three teams played in the postseason tournament: Lehigh (NCAA), Bucknell (NIT), American (CIT). • For just the second time in history, two teams won a postseason game as Bucknell also beat Arizona 65-54 in the first round of the NIT on March 14. • For the first time in League history, three women’s basketball teams earned postseason bids, as Navy went to the NCAA Tournament, American to the WNIT and Holy Cross to the WBI. In addition, the Crusaders defeated New Hampshire in the first round of the WBI, giving the League its first postseason victory since 1991. • Lehigh’s Chris Lum finished in second place for the Walter Payton award and was named ECAC FCS Offensive Player of the Year while earning multiple All-America honors. • Georgetown’s Andrew Schaetzke finished fourth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, was honored as ECAC FCS Defensive Player of the Year and became the ninth player in Patriot League history to earn consensus FCS All-America honors from the four major awarding organizations. • Eight players were named FCS All-Americans overall, with Lehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Bucknell’s Bryce Robertson joining Schaetzke as firstteam selections. • Lehigh defeated CAA champion Towson 40-38 in the second round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Dec. 3 to become the first Patriot League team since 2003 to advance to the quarterfinal round. The Mountain Hawks went on to finish at No. 5 in The Sports Network/ Fathead.com top 25 and won the ECAC FCS Lambert Cup. • Colgate and Lehigh both finished in the top 10 of the final Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media rankings, with the Raiders at No. 8 and the Mountain Hawks at No. 9. • Colgate’s Peter Baum was one of eight Patriot Leaguers to earn USILA All-America honors, and the only student-athlete on the first team. • Jess Palacio (Navy) was a second-team All-America selection by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and competed at both the NCAA Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field Championships. • Navy’s Laura Gorinski was invited to the NCAA Women’s Swimming Championships, where she competed in the 200 IM and 100 and 200 breaststroke events. • Lehigh’s Jennifer Colquhoun was named the ECAC Softball Player of the Year. • Army junior pitcher Chris Rowley earned second-team All-America honors from two organizations while teammate Kevin McKague garnered third-team honors. Both players were also up for national awards throughout the season. • Army finished the season with 41 wins, which is the most by any Patriot League baseball team in history. • Bucknell’s Brendan Burgdorf earned NSCAA Scholar All-America first-team honors while Army’s Jeff Pickett made the third team. • Navy’s Zack Duncavage placed 16th in the discus and Bucknell’s Leonard Joseph placed 17th in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division I Men’s Track and Field Outdoor Championships, with Duncavage earning second-team All-America status for his performance.

The Presidents’ Cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 17 times in its 22-year existence, including 13 of the last 15 years. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regularseason standings.

All-Time Results Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame KATIE STEELE ’96 is the only Bison volleyball player to be named to the All-Patriot League team four times. She was a two-year captain and graduated as the school record-holder in hitting percentage, aces and blocks. Most important, Steele, who was also a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete and Academic AllDistrict selection, is credited for helping turn a struggling program into a league power. After compiling a 45-186 record from 1985-92, Bucknell went 63-35 in Steele’s sophomore, junior and senior years. The Bison were the most improved team in the country in 1993, and by Steele’s senior year team finished 26-7 and won its first Patriot League regular-season title with a 6-0 record. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007.

MELISSA WHARTON ’98 graduated with 10 school records and is considered one of the best players in program history. She is still the only Bison player to hit .400 in a season, and she did so three times. Wharton recorded a Bucknell and Patriot League-record .445 hitting percentage in 1995 (second-best in the nation that year), and she followed it up by hitting .410 in 1996 and .411 as a senior in 1997. She owns three of the top four single-season hitting percentages in Patriot League history, while her .400 career average is also the school and league record. Wharton’s 1,377 career kills was the school record for 10 years until being surpassed in 2007. She is also the Bucknell and Patriot League career leader in blocks with 631. Wharton was a three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection and earned the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete in her class. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

KLARC/ The Plan

for

Bucknell

The Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 22 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Academic AllAmericans since 1970 and 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 22 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholarathlete model. The Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife, Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; Becker Field for softball, and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.

The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University.

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.

The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

28

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
