2013-14 Bucknell Wrestling Being a Bison

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BISON “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times, including in the most recent survey in the fall of 2013. Bucknell has claimed a league-high 132 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

In addition to the 125 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 341 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 125. Men’s soccer’s Joe Meyer became Bucknell’s lastest Academic All-American, earning First Team honors this fall.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

The Department of Athle cs and Recrea on strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher educa on, thereby advancing and drawing a en on to the mission, core values, and educa onal goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore commi ed to maintaining Bucknell’s high na onal ranking for student-athletes’ gradua on rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to con nued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nomina ons, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priori es and suppor ng student-athletes’ educa on, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athle c opportuni es Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebra ng challenge and compe on; and by preparing par cipants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athle c programs and recrea onal opportuni es aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In crea ng shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substan ally to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long rela onships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the Na onal Collegiate Athle c Associa on (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of compe on maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps posi on Bucknell apart from other Na onal Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the compe ve success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent conten on for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects posi vely upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings dis nc on and na onal recogni on to Bucknell. A student-centered opera on, the Department is commi ed to providing equitable opportuni es to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regula ons of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athle c Conference, and the NCAA.

N • Faced seven na onally ranked opponents in 2012-13, bringing its sevenyear total to 38. • At least two NCAA qualifiers in seven straight years. Corey Lear (165) and Joe Stolfi (285) were the two Bison na onal qualifiers in 2013.

The 2013-14 Bucknell wrestling roster consists of 24 student-athletes with 10 of them being freshmen and seven more sophomores. Despite having nearly 75 percent of the roster in its first or second year wrestling at the Division I level, ninth-year Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger has high expecta ons for the youthful group. “Having a young team like this presents plenty of challenges, but it is exci ng at the same me,” commented Wirnsberger, who ranks second on the program’s all- me wins list with 61. “It is our job as coaches to help them with their development and gain experience, and they are ge ng be er. We could have four or five true freshmen in our star ng lineup many nights this year, but the expecta on remains the same as far as bringing home All-Americans and our first NCAA champion.” The young lineup will face tremendous challenges during the month of November with a season-opening dual at Lock Haven and addi onal road duals at perennial na onal powers Lehigh, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. By the me the Bison get to the event that typically kicks off their season (Nov. 23 Navy Classic) they will have already wrestled five duals and faced at least three na onally ranked foes. “This is a challenging schedule, especially with a young team,” remarked Wirnsberger. “The first four weeks will be a good measuring s ck. A er that we will take a deep breath and evaluate where we are and where we need to improve.” Wirnsberger, who is no stranger to a team that is full of youngsters as he regularly featured lineups filled with freshmen in 2006-07, the program’s first a er being reinstated to varsity status. The Bison posted a 12-9-1 mark that year and had three freshmen qualify for NCAAs. The expecta ons remain as high as ever for the program that has had four All-Americans, 34 EIWA placewinners and sent at least two wrestlers to NCAAs each year over the last seven campaigns. “We hope to have these young guys make a name for themselves,” said Wirnsberger. “We want them to come in and take advantage of the situa on. It is nice to watch their care-free a tude and see their energy and excitement in the wrestling room.” While younger guys dominate the roster, Wirnsberger will look to team captains Tyler Lyster, Paul Petrov and Joe Stolfi for leadership. A junior, Lyster is a two-year starter who was an EIWA placewinner a year ago, while classmate Stolfi came one victory shy of All-America honors last March. Petrov, a sophomore, posted a 20-14 record and finished in sixth place at EIWAs as a rookie. 125 - Projected Starter: Paul Petrov A er wrestling at 133 pounds as a freshman last winter, Petrov is expected to move down to his more natural 125-pound weight. Despite being in a heavier weight class, Petrov had a solid rookie campaign. One of three Bison to reach 20 wins on the season, Petrov went 11-3 during a late-season stretch and was Bucknell’s starter in all 20 duals.

2013-14 Bucknell Wrestling Season Outlook

www.BucknellBison.com

“We are excited about the kind of season Paul can have, especially now that he is at his natural weight,” men oned Wirnsberger. “He is coming off a big year and we expect even more from him this year. He could certainly be standing on the podium next March.” Freshman Grim Gonzalez, who could also wrestle at 133, will challenge Petrov. He was a two- me state placewinner at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa. “Grim has a great work ethic and is extremely talented and we are excited about his poten al,” praised Wirnsberger. 133 - Projected Starter: Nick Abbo /Bob Hauser Freshman Nick Abbo and senior Bob Hauser will be the main compe tors for the star ng spot at 133 pounds. Abbo collected more than 100 victories during his three-year varsity career at Summit High School in New Jersey. Hauser has wrestled in 28 matches at 125 and 133 during his Bison career and is looking to become a regular member of the star ng lineup for the first me. “Bob has been around the program and has plenty of experience,” commented Wirnsberger. “He has improved and we look forward to seeing him get even be er throughout the year. “Nick has the work ethic and dedica on necessary to be successful; it is just a ma er of how quickly he develops.” Sophomore Mark Edmonds, who wrestled at five tournaments a year ago, will add depth. 141 - Projected Starter: Victor Lopez Three freshmen are in the mix at 141 pounds, including projected starter Victor Lopez, a California na ve. A four- me All-American and a three- me state placewinner at Poway High School, Lopez impressed the coaching staff during preseason workouts. “Victor is extremely talented with a strong work ethic and a passion for the sport,” praised Wirnsberger, who noted that Lopez asked to move down to 141 because he thought it gave him a be er chance of succeeding on the na onal stage. “He wrestles with a tude and purpose, loves the sport and is student of the sport.” Fellow rookies Connor Lapresi and Ma Coppola will be in the mix at 141, but could also see me at 149. “Connor comes in with high creden als and great experience and he will find a way into our lineup, while Ma is a commi ed and hard-working guy who will con nue to gain experience and develop,” said Wirnsberger. 149 - Projected Starter: Alex Pelliccio Junior Alex Pelliccio , who took the 2012-13 season off for personal reasons, returns to the Bison lineup in 2013-14. A two- me EIWA Championships par cipant at 133 and 149, Pelliccio was 13-13 as a sophomore and has collected 21 victories during his Bucknell career, including six by pin.

Alex Pellicciotti

“It feels good to have Alex back with us,” commented Wirnsberger. “He has a tremendous amount of experience and he is ready to break through and make a name for himself.” Lapresi and Coppola will also be in the mix at 149. 157 - Projected Starter: Brenan McAllister/Logan Kerin/Ray Schli Vincent Favia started at 157 in 19 of 20 duals a year ago, but the sophomore has moved up to 165 this year, leaving an open spot for someone to grab. A number of people are in the mix, including sophomore Brenan McAllister, freshman Logan Kerin and junior Ray Schli . McAllister had a difficult freshman year, but gained valuable experience wrestling in five tournaments and one dual match. “Brenan is commi ed to the sport of wrestling and to ge ng be er during the offseason and we expect to see a lot of improvement from him this year,” commented Wirnsberger. Schli started at 157 last year against Cornell and at 165 opposite Columbia and Army. “Ray is mature and has plenty of experience,” said Wirnsberger about the veteran who has wrestled 31 career bouts. “He needs to stay healthy and take the next step.” Kerin comes to Bucknell from Wayne, Pa., and finished with a 114-33 high school record. “There is a great opportunity for Logan to break into the lineup as a true freshman,” men oned Wirnsberger. “I am excited about his poten al and he will con nue to improve since he has the work ethic and lives the right lifestyle.” Junior Joe Orecchio has ba led injuries over his first two years, but the Bison will count on him for added depth at 157. 165 - Projected Starter: Rus n Barrick/Vincent Favia/Robert Schli Favia has moved up to 165 a er wrestling exclusively at 157 as a freshman. The Brick, N.J., na ve ranked among the team’s leaders in victories and competed at the EIWA Championships. A highly touted freshman from Mechanicsburg Area High School a year ago, Rus n Barrick ba led injuries and did not wrestle a match. He is healthy this year and should challenge Favia for a star ng spot. “Rus n is dedicated, commi ed and lives the right lifestyle,” praised Wirnsberger. “As long as he stays healthy he can do big things at the na onal level.” Sophomore Robert Schli was a regular member of the Bison dual lineup at 174 a year ago, but he also wrestled at 157 and 165. He is expected to be at his more natural 165 and will use the experience he gained wrestling 23 bouts as a rookie to his advantage as he ba les Favia and Barrick for the star ng nod. 174 - Projected Starter: Stephen McPeek Senior Stephen McPeek has ba led some injuries the last two years, but is entering his third year as the Bison starter at 174. He owns a 43-35 career record with 19 wins for bonus points. “Stephen has unlimited poten al and we expect big things out of him this year,” said Wirnsberger. “He has been hampered by injuries, but if he is healthy there is no reason to think he won’t have the type of senior year we expect from him.” Freshman Joey Krulock, who was a high school teammate of Barrick, will challenge McPeek, while fellow rookie Aus n We erau will add valuable depth. 184 - Projected Starter: Tyler Greene For the second consecu ve year Bucknell will enter the season with a freshman starter at 184. This year it is Tyler Greene, an Easton, Pa., na ve. The winner of 129 matches during his high school career, Greene finished third in the state as a senior. “Tyler is a young guy who we need to develop as quickly as possible,” commented Wirnsberger. “He has great poten al and we expect him to be a big contributor for us.” In the star ng mix with Greene at 184 and Lyster at 197 will be freshman Rory Bonner, who set a school single-season wins record (40) at West Dep ord High School in New Jersey.

Five EIWA Placewinners in 2013

2013-14 Bucknell Wrestling Season Outlook/Wrestler Profiles “Rory brings a strong work ethic and a passion for the sport to our program,” stated Wirnsberger. “He has plenty of will and determina on and should challenge for a star ng spot at both 184 and 197.” 197 - Projected Starter: Tyler Lyster Lyster showed remarkable improvement between his freshman and sophomore seasons, increasing his win total from nine to 21. He was an EIWA placewinner at 197 last year and became the first-ever Bison to record a pin in a dual match against tradi onal power Iowa. “We look for Tyler to con nue his steady improvement,” commented Wirnsberger. “He is looking to take it to the next level and qualify for NCAAs. He has the ability to be on the podium before his career is done.” Lyster enters his third Bison campaign with 30 career victories, including 14 bonus-point wins. He has eight career pins.

“Joe is coming off a very successful year where he proved he can compete against the best in the country,” remarked Wirnsberger. “His postseason performance was a big li psychologically since he now knows he can compete against − and beat − the best in the country. We look for him to become an All-American this year and challenge for a na onal tle in the compe ve heavyweight division.” Wrestling alongside Stolfi at heavyweight is sophomore Chuck Boddy. The Abington, Pa., na ve was 3-6 as a freshman, but provides muchneeded depth in a weight class in which Bucknell has typically been slightly undermanned.

Dan Wirnsberger, who officially became the 15th coach of the Bucknell wrestling program on May 10, 2005, enters his ninth year at the helm of the Orange and Blue in 2013-14. Hired to guide Bucknell’s program back into the na onal spotlight a er a four-year hiatus where it was not a varsity sport, Wirnsberger has succeeded and currently ranks second on the Bison career wins list with 61. Eleven Bison have combined for 21 NCAA Championships berths under Wirnsberger’s guidance, while Andy Rendos and Kevin LeValley each became two- me All-Americans. Bucknell has finished at least .500 three mes and has recorded at least a .500 record against EIWA compe on four mes under Wirnsberger. A er spending a transi onal year recrui ng and laying the groundwork for a successful program, Wirnsberger brought Bucknell back onto the mat in 2006-07 with flying colors. Under Wirnsberger’s direc on, the 2006-07 Bison returned to the mat in grand fashion, se ng a school record for dual-meet victories by compiling a record of 12-9-1, 3-3-1 in the EIWA, including a 17-16 win over na onally ranked Columbia. At the EIWA tournament, he led the Orange and Blue to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools and saw three Bucknell grapplers earn bids to the NCAA Championships. Facing a tougher schedule in its second season back as a varsity program at Bucknell, Wirnsberger helped the squad to a 9-11-1 mark in 2007-08. The Bison posted a 4-4 mark against EIWA compe on. Once again, three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and Bucknell moved up one spot to eighth place at the compe ve EIWA Championships. The Bison program took a major stride forward in 2008-09 as Wirnsberger guided Bucknell to a e for third at the EIWA Championships and helped a school-record six wrestlers earn NCAA berths. Addi onally, Andy Rendos became the first Bison to earn All-America honors in 14 years as he placed fi h at NCAAs in the 165-pound weight class. As a team, Bucknell registered 11 wins, giving it a three-year win total of 32, the best stretch in program history. More milestones were accomplished in 2009-10 as Wirnsberger saw two of his wrestlers earn All-America honors, marking a first for the program. The Bison also ed a school record with 12 victories and finished with an unbeaten EIWA mark. Wirnsberger guided the team to its second consecu ve topfive finish at the EIWA Championships as it claimed fourth in the team standings. Highligh ng the weekend was Rendos’ individual tle in the 165-pound

bracket, making him the first EIWA champion in program history. Wirnsberger helped LeValley duplicate Rendos’ feat by winning the 149-pound EIWA tle and earn his second consecu ve All-America cita on in 2010-11. He won the EIWA crown at Sojka Pavilion as Wirnsberger oversaw a program that successfully hosted one of the major conference tournaments in the country. The 2011-12 Bison were ravaged by injuries as six projected starters missed significant me during the campaign. S ll, there were plenty of posives for Wirnsberger and the young Bucknell squad that featured just one senior as Corey Lear and Aus n Miller became first- me NCAA par cipants. Last year Bucknell again experienced a number of injuries, but Lear and Joe Stolfi s ll earned berths to the NCAA Championships. The unseeded Stolfi peaked at the right me of year and came just one victory shy of All-America honors. A three- me wrestling All-American at Michigan State University, Wirnsberger previously served as the head coach of Bloomsburg University’s Division I program from 2002 to 2005. As head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger qualified 10 student-athletes for the NCAA Tournament, including six in 2005, his final season at the helm, and he coached the program’s first-ever Olympic Trials qualifier. He helped four Bloomsburg wrestlers capture Eastern Wrestling League tles and six win PSAC crowns. Named the 2005 PSAC Coach of the Year a er leading the Huskies to the team tle for the first me since 1990, Wirnsberger’s recrui ng classes were ranked 14th and 19th, respecvely, in 2003 and 2004, while his first two recrui ng classes at Bucknell were ranked 14th and 25th by Wrestling Interna onal Newsmagazine (W.I.N.). In 2004-05, Bloomsburg posted a 10-6 dual-meet record (4-2 EWL) and crowned three EWL champions while finishing fi h at the league tournament. Prior to becoming head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger spent six years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, where he helped coach a team that featured three All-Americans and finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Tournament in 2000 (19th) and 2001 (23rd). The Hokies qualified a school-record five wrestlers for NCAAs in 2000, and the following year the program was

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Associa on (EIWA), as it is known today, had its beginning in 1904. Then, students from a number of schools in the East met and proposed the crea on of a group whose responsibility it would be to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a formal sport. One year later wrestlers from Columbia, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale competed in the first EIWA tournament. Under the management of J. Edward Weisenfluh, a student at Penn, the first tournament was held April 7, 1905, in the Gymnasium of Weightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. At this first mee ng the Intercollegiate Wrestling Associa on was born. Therea er, three mee ngs were held each year, once just before the tournament, once just a er the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected. No team scoring was kept at the first EIWA tournament in 1905. All that was recorded was the total number of bouts won by each wrestler, in the following weight classes: 115, 125, 135, 145, 158, 175 and heavyweight. Based on that system, Yale won, followed in order by Columbia, Princeton and Pennsylvania. Remaining strictly a student organiza on for three and one-half decades, the group gradually assumed the name “Eastern” to dis nguish itself from the faculty-controlled “Western” Associa on, now known as the Big Ten. Ul mately, a er the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control, and the Eastern College Athle c Conference, organized in 1938, has since provided formal structure for the EIWA, which now func ons as an allied en ty of the ECAC. “The Easterns” have survived both as the oldest intercollegiate wrestling organiza on and as a unique athle c event with unusually widespread spectator appeal. Today, membership in the EIWA numbers 18 schools: American, Army, Binghamton, Boston University, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Drexel, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Hofstra, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers and Sacred Heart. Binghamton, Boston University, Drexel and Hofstra were the most recent addi ons, joining in the summer of 2013.

2011 EIWA C Bucknell hosted the 2011 EIWA Championships in Sojka Pavilion, its first conference championship hos ng duty since 1997. The two-day event took place in Sojka Pavilion, Bucknell’s primary basketball arena. Thirteen teams visited Lewisburg for the 107th EIWA Championships and Cornell came away with the team tle for the fi h consecu ve year. The Big Red had four individual champions. Bucknell finished in eighth place in the team standings, but the highlight of the weekend for the Bison was senior All-American Kevin LeValley claiming the program’s second-ever EIWA individual tle. The second-seeded LeValley upset top-seeded Kyle Dake of Cornell, who had won the NCAA tle at 141 pounds one year earlier, in over me in front of crowd of nearly 1,700 on a snowy Sunday a ernoon. Overall, Bucknell had five placewinners: LeValley (1st at 149), Brantley Hooks (7th at 157), Corey Lear (7th at 165), Rob Waltko (6th at 184) and Jay Hahn (4th at 197).

The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. Five former wrestlers are among the 234 outstanding members whose contributions to Bucknell athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame. Ed Curran (’88) - Ed Curran was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion during his time as a member of the Bison. Hall of Famer Tom Scotton is the only other Bucknell wrestler to make that claim. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times and was a quarterfinalist in 1986. As a senior, Curran posted a 23-4 record at 134 pounds, and he finished with an impressive career record of 71-20-1, which was then the second-highest victory total at Bucknell. He was the Outstanding Wrestler at both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Cornell Invitational in 1987. Curran was just as successful off the wrestling mat, where he made the Dean’s List every semester, won the prestigious University Prize for Men and was a Second Team Academic All-American. He also earned the ECAC Medallion and graduated magna cum laude. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2005. Bobby Ferraro (’94) - A first-ballot Hall of Fame choice and Bucknell’s first two-time wrestling All-American, Bobby Ferarro graduated with an impressive 118-211 career mat record and four East Coast Wrestling Association gold medals. He became just the third grappler in school history to earn All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 177-pound class at the NCAA Championships during his senior season, and then he repeated the distinction with a seventh-place finish as a graduate student in 1995. Ferraro finished 31-8 in 1994, falling just one victory shy of the school record, and he tied a 37-year-old school mark by recording pins in five straight matches. With a 30-6 record in 1995, Ferraro broke the school career victory record and finished second all-time with 44 falls. In becoming just the second man to win four ECWA titles, Ferraro in 1995 also helped the Bison to their second-ever team championship. He was the ECWA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1992 and never lost a conference bout. A two-time team captain, he won the Christy Mathewson Award as Bucknell’s top senior athlete. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004.

Thomas M. Marchetti (’91) - Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell’s very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds. Marchetti earned three consecutive East Coast Cconference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 ECC Championships. He graduated as Bucknell’s all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark. His 31 victories in 1990-91 were second-most in program history at the time, while his 45-7 dual-match record was third-best all-time. Marchetti remains one of only five Bucknell wrestlers to win 80 percent of his matches over a four-year career, and he also set school marks for pins in a season (19) and career (41). Marchetti was a Freshman All-American in his first year at Bucknell and was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009. Thomas M. Scotton (’78) - Named All-East by National Mat News in 1978 and selected Bucknell’s outstanding wrestler four times, Scotton never lost a dual collegiate match on his way to three ECC championships and appearances at the NCAA Championships and holds several Bison mat records. Twice co-captain, he had a career record of 89-4-1. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

He began his football career at Bucknell as a fullback, but was moved to defensive end at the beginning of his junior year. He was twice named to the All-Pennsylvania second team and All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team at the new position. The top accounting student in his Bucknell class and a cum laude graduate, Kaufmann received an MBA from Harvard and later returned to the ministry. He served as executive pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and previously served as pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido, Calif. THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
