What it means to

be a bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth, Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a studentathlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. t

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

t

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

t

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

t

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

t

Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

t

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 22-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 15 years.

t

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

t

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

Season Outlook The Bucknell baseball program has had only two coaches in the last 46 years. In the offseason, eight-year assistant coach Scott Heather was elevated to head coach to replace the retiring 31-year veteran Gene Depew, making him just the third frontman for the program in nearly half a century. When interviewing for the head coaching job, Heather’s mantra was to increase the pace at which the program is run and his first offseason certainly lived up to that goal. “Day-to-day operations have continued,” said Heather, who arrived at Bucknell in the summer of 2004 and has been on the coaching staff of two Bison NCAA Tournament teams. “As a young assistant coach, I learned from each head coach and certainly the biggest influence on me has been Gene Depew. He knows what it takes for a student-athlete to be successful at Bucknell and we have stayed with a lot of the same philosophies. “Offensively, fans might see some differences in approach, more dictated by the change in bats a few years ago, as we try to put more pressure on opponents. We had a lot of success hitting home runs for a number of years, but now it is a lot harder to sit back and wait for the long ball. We will try to put pressure on opponents by putting the ball in play, staying up the middle with our approach, as well as with bunts and hit-and-runs as we try to remain unpredictable.” Heather has assembled a youthful but talented coaching staff that features four former professional players as he tries to take the program to the next level. Included among the coaches are third-year assistant Jason Neitz and former Bison catcher B.J. LaRosa, a key member of the 2008 and 2010 NCAA Tournament squads. “I’ve been really pleased with our production in practice from a coaching staff standpoint,” praised Heather. “We are all very capable in leading drills and helping our guys get better. It’s been very positive for our players with the level of playing experience that our coaches have and all the insight they can provide.” While some seats in the dugout will be

At least 20 wins in five consecutive years different and some behind-the-scenes operations have changed, the key to the success of the squad remains on the field and Bucknell has a talented group in 2013. The Bison return three-fourths of their starting rotation and will feature a senior-laden infield in addition to a number of talented outfielders. Bucknell’s roster is also dotted with 12 newcomers who will certainly factor into the success of the squad. PITCHING STAFF: Heather, the team’s pitching coach the last eight seasons, is especially excited about the squad’s arms. Junior lefty Dan Weigel, sophomore righty Bryson Hough and senior righty Dan Goldstein combined to start 26 of 49 games for the Bison in 2012. The trio logged more than 160 innings and had tremendous success in their first year as frontline pitchers. “We have three starters that give us a chance against anybody,” commented Heather. Weigel served as Bucknell’s No. 1 starter a year ago and it showed in his statistics. His 3.01 ERA was third on the team and it never climbed higher than 3.17. The 6’6” Weigel walked just 1.63 hitters per nine innings to rank fifth on the program’s single-season ledger, while his six wins and 6.52 innings per outing led the team. “Dan has continued his progress in being a strike thrower,” said Heather. “He can get multiple pitchers over for strikes and has only gotten better as he enters his junior season.” The only freshman to start more than one game on the mound a year ago, Hough finished his rookie campaign 2-7 with a solid 3.63 ERA. He kept the Bison in every game he pitched and will need to avoid the one mistake each outing that cost him wins. “Bryson has continued to develop and has the potential to be one of the most dominant pitchers we have had here,” praised Heather. The hard-throwing Goldstein began the year as a reliever but moved into the rotation by the end of Spring Break. He finished the campaign 1-3 with a 6.62 ERA in 34.0 innings. His 27 strikeouts ranked fifth on the team. “Dan has always shown he can be a very effective pitcher and he really developed his velocity this past summer,” mentioned Heather. “He was dominant at times during the fall and we’re looking forward to him taking that next step.” Heading into the season Heather is unsure of who the final starter will be, but he certainly has plenty of options. Sophomore Xavier Hammond is in the mix along with freshmen Andrew Andreychik, Dan Keller and Max Kra. Additionally, junior Jack McLinden could push for a starting spot. Hammond and McLinden pitched primarily out of the bullpen a year ago, combining to make 20 appearances, 18 in relief, while Heather stated that Andreychik, a native of nearby Danville, Pa., had the most consistent fall of any of the newcomer hurlers. Bucknell’s bullpen in 2012 was anchored by All-Patriot League closer Alex Cillo and lefthander Russell Seidell. Those veterans were first and second on the team in ERA, but both graduated in May, leaving some holes to fill. Senior right-hander Marcus Garone will

Justin Meier likely continue in his middle relief role. A midweek starter at times during his career, Garone flourished in relief a year ago, registering a 4.05 ERA in 13 appearances. He struck out 16 in 20.0 innings. Sophomore righty Jordan Holtz is the frontrunner for Cillo’s vacated closer spot. The 6’3” Holtz saw more opportunities on the mound as the season progressed last spring and finished with a 4.66 ERA and five strikeouts in 9.2 innings. Heather also expects junior Tom Hrabchak, who spent his first two years as a catcher, sophomore Tucker Rekucki and first-year sophomore Jonathan Lucas to be in the mix in the bullpen, as well as some of the possible starting pitchers who are unable to find a home in the rotation. “How our middle relief and closeout pitchers develop will determine our season,” predicted Heather. “Especially with the number of road games we will be playing it will be important to finish off games we are leading.” CATCHER: Bucknell lost hard-hitting catcher Scott Reed, a two-year starter, to graduation, but that opens a spot for junior Justin Meier, who has served as an understudy for two campaigns. A strong defensive player, Meier has totaled 23 hits in his career, including six extrabase hits. Last year he threw out 33.3 percent of would-be basestealers and that number should only go up with increased playing time. “Justin had a good summer in which he played a lot and is ready to step into the starting role,” said Heather. Sophomore Marcus Hernandez, who saw spot time in a reserve role a year ago, and freshman Jon Mayer will compete for playing time and show good potential. In fact, Heather thinks Mayer has the chance at being a pro prospect down the road. Hrabchak, a former backup catcher, will spend most of his time transitioning to pitcher, while sophomore Jake Archey will sit out the 2013 campaign per NCAA rules after transferring from Binghamton. FIRST BASE: Sophomore Rob Krentzman was the Bison freshman who saw the most playing time a year ago as he appeared in

www.BucknellBison.com

More than 50 majors and 65 minors

Rob Krentzman 27 games with 21 starts, mostly at first base. The 6’4” Krentzman hit .284 with 11 RBIs and Heather expects more power out him this spring. “Rob should be one of our middle of the order hitters,” commented Heather. “He’s a good hitter who is working on improving his power, a good athlete and has some versatility. He has played first, but has also shown he can player third and even some outfield.” Junior Luke Lombardi will battle Krentzman for playing time at first. He was one of the team’s top hitters during the fall after totaling just 39 at bats his first two seasons. Heather expects him to be a factor in the lineup at either first base or designated hitter. SECOND BASE: Senior Travis Clark is a two-year starter at second base and the talented athlete is expected to hold the position once again. He is the team’s top returning hitter (.293) and his 25 RBIs ranked third on the squad last spring. “Travis had a very good summer in the California Collegiate League and also had a good fall,” praised Heather. “He has worked on putting the ball in play hard on a consistent basis. He’s a very capable player who sometimes tries to do too much. We’re trying to get him to focus on what he can do and that’s enough to be a very good player in our league. “When trying to find our best nine, we might sometimes move guys around and due to Travis’ versatility we have looked at him at first base as well.” Youngsters Greg Wasikowski, Andreychik and Tommy Pennington could serve as backups for the durable Clark, who started a teamhigh 48 games in 2012. SHORTSTOP: Robb Scott’s batting average more than doubled from 2011 (.134) to 2012 (.282) and that improvement should only continue as the hard-working senior enters his final campaign. A two-year starter at shortstop, Scott posted career highs in nearly every offensive category and was fifth on the team with eight multi-hit contests. “Robb seems the most comfortable he has been since he arrived at Bucknell,” mentioned Heather. “He had a great summer where he hit 11 home runs and was rated a top prospect in the Hamptons League. He carried that over into the fall and was a middle of the order guy. His timing is a lot better now, which has helped his confidence.” Wasikowski, who had a great fall at the

www.BucknellBison.com

Season Outlook plate, Andreychik and Pennington will likely serve as backups to Scott. THIRD BASE: Bucknell must replace the graduated David Duffett, one of only two players to hit over .300 a year ago, at third base. Luckily, the likely replacement is senior Carter Bumgardner, who received plenty of playing time at designated hitter and on the infield in his first season with the Bison after transferring from Maryland. Bumgardner hit .258 with 11 doubles and 14 RBIs last spring and those numbers should only go up this year. “Carter made the transition to being at third base full time this fall,” said Heather. “He has one of the better offensive approaches on the team with regards to hitting the ball where it’s pitched. He has put plenty of quality at bats together and has always been a solid defender.” Junior Will Mooney, who missed the fall season with an injury, will compete for playing time, as will senior Scott Glass. Additionally, Kra and fellow rookies Spencer Stokes and Pennington will add depth. Pennington, especially, is busy developing at three infield spots. OUTFIELD: The Bison infield has many experienced veterans in the mix for playing time, but the outfield is somewhat lacking in game experience after the graduation of stalwarts Bob Donato and Gerry Runyan. Heather does have plenty of options in the outfield, but only one has more than 75 career at bats. “The outfield is certainly our biggest area of competition and we’re excited to see what guys do in the spring,” said Heather. Heading into the season Matt Busch is the frontrunner to replace All-Patriot Leaguer Donato in center field. The senior hit .317 in 41 at bats last spring and served as the team’s primary pinch runner. Glass, an infielder throughout the first part of his career, will compete for playing time in left field, which was a position that saw seven different players start games and none more than 20 times. Junior Colby Vanderbeck, who missed the fall season with an injury after driving in 13 runs last year, and classmate Corey Furman will also vie for playing time in the outfield. Junior Brett Ashley, who has some pop in his bat, will aim for the starting job in right field. Freshman Ryan Otis is a speedy center fielder who will add depth, while fellow rookie Joe Ogren was called the team’s most accomplished hitting freshman by Heather. Ogren came to Bucknell as a shortstop, but was quickly moved to the outfield to capitalize on his hitting ability.

34 Scott Heather Head Coach - First Season Arkansas ’03

Scott Heather was named the head coach of the Bucknell baseball program on June 18, 2012, succeeding the retiring Gene Depew. Heather spent the previous eight years as an assistant coach at Bucknell, helping the Bison to a pair of Patriot League Tournament titles and NCAA appearances. A former pitcher at the University of Arkansas, Heather served as the pitching coach during the first eight years of his tenure at Bucknell. Under his direction, the Bison pitching staff posted an ERA of under 4.50 on three occasions. The staff had a 4.30 ERA in 2006, marking the team’s lowest since 1983 (4.10), and it ranked fourth in the Patriot League with a solid 4.65 ERA last spring. During his tenure, Heather tutored a number of outstanding pitchers, including 2011 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ryan Ebner. Additionally, Heather oversaw the development of 2008 graduates Jason Buursma and Mathew Wilson. Those two former Bison claimed backto-back Patriot League ERA titles, while Buursma earned a pair of First Team All-Patriot League selections as a relief pitcher. Wilson, who was the 2007 Patriot League ERA champion, broke the school record for career shutouts and pitched a complete-game shutout against nationally ranked Florida State in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Heather has had the opportunity to see Bison pitchers selected in three Major League Baseball Drafts since his arrival in Lewisburg in August 2004. Buursma was drafted in 2007 (42nd round by Seattle Mariners) and 2008 (25th round by St. Louis Cardinals), while Kyle Walter was selected in the 18th round of the 2006 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. In addition to his duties with the Bucknell pitching staff, Heather served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and assisted with all fundraising projects during his time with the Bison. Prior to his stint as an assistant at Bucknell, Heather served as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith from 1999 to 2004. Heather began his playing career at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz., where he was MVP of the 1996 team that was ranked third nationally, before moving on to Arkansas. Heather lettered for the Razorbacks as a pitcher in 1997 and 1998, and then became a student assistant in 1999 when Arkansas won its first Southeastern Conference championship. He also pitched professionally for the Duluth Dukes of the Northern League in 1998. Heather, who earned his degree from Arkansas in 2003, and his wife, Emily, live in nearby Mifflinburg with their two-year-old daughter, Ellie.

Approx. 440 students study abroad each year Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola (Md.) will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores. • Navy won the Presidents’ Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women’s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men’s crown. • Lehigh, a No. 15 seed, defeated No. 2 Duke 75-70 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game on March 16. The victory is up for a “best upset” award for the ESPYs. • Colgate’s Peter Baum became the first player in Patriot League history to win the Tewaaraton Award as the top collegiate lacrosse player, and also claimed the Lt. Enners Award. • Colgate’s Elise DeRoo was named the Patriot League Female ScholarAthlete of the Year, while Army’s Brendan Buckley won the Male ScholarAthlete of the Year award. • Ten student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-Americans, including a first-team selection for Bucknell’s Tim Bolte (Football). • 48 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition. • It was the first time in Patriot League men’s basketball history that three teams played in a postseason tournament: Lehigh (NCAA), Bucknell (NIT), American (CIT). • For just the second time in history, two teams won a postseason game as Bucknell also beat Arizona 65-54 in the first round of the NIT. • For the first time in League history, three women’s basketball teams earned postseason bids, as Navy went to the NCAA Tournament, American to the WNIT and Holy Cross to the WBI. In addition, the Crusaders defeated New Hampshire in the first round of the WBI, giving the League its first postseason victory since 1991. • Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum was named ECAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as well as an honorable mention AP All-American. • Lehigh’s Chris Lum finished in second place for the Walter Payton award and was named ECAC FCS Offensive Player of the Year while earning multiple All-America honors. • Georgetown’s Andrew Schaetzke finished fourth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, was honored as ECAC FCS Defensive Player of the Year and became the ninth player in Patriot League history to earn consensus FCS All-America honors from the four major awarding organizations. • Eight players were named FCS All-Americans overall, with Lehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Bucknell’s Bryce Robertson joining Schaetzke as firstteam selections. • Lehigh defeated CAA champion Towson 40-38 in the second round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Dec. 3 to become the first Patriot League team since 2003 to advance to the quarterfinal round. The Mountain Hawks went on to finish at No. 5 in The Sports Network/Fathead. com top 25 and won the ECAC FCS Lambert Cup. • Colgate upset previously unbeaten UMass, 13-11, in the first round of

Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.

About Bucknell

Bucknell Athletics Mission statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell studentathletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.
