Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur.

Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands.

Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of six Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

A nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model.

At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

Season Preview Thanks to the return of four of the team’s top five scorers from a year ago and another year of growth by junior goalie Rena Heim, second-year Bucknell head coach John McBride expects plenty of improvement from the Bison in his second year at the helm.

A year ago Bucknell posted 15 wins, finished in fourth place at the Southern Championships and took home an eighth-place certificate from the Eastern Championship. This spring, McBride thinks a top-two showing at Southerns, a top-four finish at Easterns and a spot in the final national top-20 poll are attainable goals.

There is no reason to doubt McBride, who already led the Bison men’s team to the school’s first-ever Southern Championships crown and its first appearance in an Eastern Championship title game in 20 years this past fall.

The women’s season actually began a little early this year. Just prior to the start of second semester classes the entire team took a week-long training trip to Trinidad.

“The Trinidad trip was great for team bonding,” mentioned McBride. “They came back from Trinidad a tighter group. They were stuck on an island and forced to get along or not get along. We came back with 19 women who really enjoy being around each other and are ready to play for each other.”

Bucknell’s other advantage this spring is the fact the majority of the players on the team have already spent a year in McBride’s system.

“Last year they had to learn my system and philosophy but this year they already know what to expect, so nothing is a shock,” said McBride. “It’s been much easier this year. We haven’t had to condition as much, so we’ve been able to focus right away on water polo and what we’re trying to accomplish.”

The success of the Bison will likely hinge on the performance of returning all-conference players Taylor Barnett and Julianne Valdes, as well as Heim.

Barnett, the CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year, made an immediate impact as a freshman last spring. She tallied a team-high 67 goals and drew a team-high 81 ejections to place in the top five on the program’s single-season lists for both categories. A starter in 37 games a year ago, Barnett tied the Bucknell record for goals in a game (7) against George Washington.

McBride expects to use Barnett in a utility role in 2013, rather than the center position she played a year ago.

“Taylor went from being a full-time perimeter player in high school and club to being a very productive center for us,” explained McBride. “We have brought in another center and it will allow Taylor to be more dynamic and play additional positions, which will certainly help us out. She should do even better this year than last.”

Valdes, a team co-captain along with Krystle Morgan, will continue to do what she has done her first two years as a Bison - score points. The Miami, Fla.,

native posted 47 goals and 85 points as a freshman and followed that with a 57-goal, 106-point performance last spring. Valdes enters her junior campaign having scored at least one point in 27 consecutive games. She also ranks eighth in program history in ejections drawn (94).

“JV is a workhorse. A grinder. A good leader in the pool,” praised McBride, a seven-year assistant at Brown prior to landing his current position. “She is going to get her points and make plays. She is reliable and is never going to have a bad game. We are confident she won’t make many mistakes and she will always find a way to get things done.”

While Barnett and Valdes combined for more than one-third of Bucknell’s 353 goals in 2012, Heim was at the back of the defense trying to prevent scores by the opponents. She beat out veteran Brittany Connell for the starting goalkeeper spot and had a strong season. The Mohnton, Pa., native registered 279 saves in 34 games played, more than doubling her freshman-year total and placing her second on Bucknell’s single-season list.

“It was a tough situation for Rena last year being a sophomore starting over a senior, but I had confidence in her,” said McBride about the only goalie on the 2013 Bison roster. “She worked hard in the offseason. She’s working hard now. She’s looked great in practice. She’s going to be the key to our defense and should have a great year.”

Morgan and fellow senior Tara Murao joined Barnett, Valdes and the sincegraduated Hallie Kennan in Bucknell’s 40-point club a year ago. Morgan was fourth on the team in goals (42) and points (49), while Murao ranked third on the team with 37 assists and fifth with 41 points. McBride will count on the only two seniors on the roster for plenty of leadership.

“I expect Krystle to be much better than last year and she was great last year,” commented McBride about his projected starting center. “Our offense focuses around our center and she is an important part for us to have success.”

A veteran of 90 games, Murao, who McBride says has a very high water polo IQ, ranks seventh on Bucknell’s career ejections drawn list (99).

Juniors Mackenzie Ferry and Heather Smith were valuable reserves a year ago, but McBride expects them to challenge for positions in the starting lineup vacated by Kennan and fellow graduate Becca Shopiro. Sophomore Barbara Peterson is in the mix to start as well given the success she had filling in for an injured Amanda Skonezney last year. Peterson totaled 26 goals and 12 assists, most of which came during her 20 starting assignments.

“Mack and Heather are both going to be starters,” said McBride. “They both understand my philosophy well and I think they have grown as athletes since last year. They are two people I can put in the water and count on with 100 percent confidence.”

Juniors Samantha Deana and Stephanie Ovalle as well as sophomore Sayeh Bozorghadad saw action in a combined 88 games a year ago, so they are no strangers to the pool. However, McBride predicted increased playing time for each of them given the improvement they each made in the offseason.

“Those three players have to be ready to make an impact and contribute off the bench,” mentioned McBride.

Junior Sarah Frank is also expected to add depth once again. She played in 16 games a year ago and netted five goals.

With a large seven-person freshman class, McBride will count on some of them for meaningful minutes throughout the season, but he cautioned about the adjustment from high school to college.

“They’re learning they aren’t as big and fast as they were in high school,” said McBride. “They are adjusting and getting pushed around right now, but they’ll learn and be fine.”

Among the freshmen expected to contribute early in the campaign are Hannah Sunday, who will see playing time at center, Emily Nowlin, who is a strong offensive player, and lefty Eleanor Marrs, who has plenty of experience playing against men. Sunday and Nowlin, along with Barnett, each has an older brother who played or plays for the Bison men’s team.

Coaching Staff John McBride

John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the previous seven years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. National Team, serving as head coach of the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009.

Less than two years into his tenure, McBride has already guided the Bison programs for three seasons and been a part of 47 victories. He has led the men’s team to back-to-back above-.500 records and the program’s first Eastern Championship game appearance in nearly 20 years. Last spring he saw the women’s team collect 15 victories against a challenging schedule that included 14 ranked opponents.

While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. Kyle Gorham brings plenty of experience to the Bucknell men’s and women’s water polo coaching staff. The California native is in his first year in Lewisburg after five years as an assistant at Long Beach State.

While with the 49ers, Gorham assisted with both the men’s and women’s programs. He was also the head coach of the Adult Masters Swim Program, while also serving as an assistant coach with the Coastal California Zone Boys Water Polo Team.

Prior to his time at Long Beach State, Gorham served on the coaching water polo and swimming staffs at Corona Del Mar High School, Sonora High School and Brea Olinda High School.

Gorham graduated from Brea Olinda High School in 2000, earned an associates degree from Orange Coast College in 2008 and a bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State in 2012.

12 Trinidad Trip - January 2013 CWPA/ACWPC Academic Awards

This past January, the Bucknell women’s water polo team took a week-long training trip to the Caribbean island of Trinidad. Below are some pictures from the trip.

Nine Bison were named to the CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team and also earned ACWPC All-Academic Awards following the 2012 campaign. Student-athletes were recognized in three levels: 3.20 to 3.40 GPA (Excellent), 3.41 to 3.70 GPA (Superior) and 3.71 to 4.0 GPA (Outstanding). Bucknell had two players recognized in the Outstanding category, two landed on the Superior list and five more were cited with positions on the Excellent ledger by both organizations.

About Bucknell Life After Bucknell

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2011, 89 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 838 graduates in that class, 812 (97 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 71 percent were employed, 18 percent were enrolled in graduate school, three percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and only three percent were still seeking employment.

Of those attending graduate school, 16 percent are pursuing degrees in social sciences and the humanities, 13 percent are in law school, 15 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in engineering and 14 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in medicine.

The mean salary for the 2011 graduates responding to the survey was $48,552 and was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in computer science & engineering was $56,882, and the mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration was $50,726.

Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $42,260.

Most 2011 graduates (82 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (23 percent), New York (17 percent) and New Jersey (16 percent) leading the way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Consulting,Teach for America, Bucknell University, United State Navy, Goldman Sachs, United States Army and High Performance Technologies, Inc.

Bucknell University Receives Major Donation from Dan and Chris Richards to Bolster Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Programs

The men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell University will be greatly bolstered thanks to a $1.5 million commitment made by Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards in the summer of 2009. The pledge was made in honor of Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from 1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell.

As the Richards’ multi-year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. The Russell Endowment will provide a lasting memorial honoring the lifetime contributions of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Bucknell’s varsity water polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne ‘62 to honor former coach and director of athletics Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradition of the varsity aquatics programs at Bucknell.

Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards have created a matching challenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swimming and diving to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell.

CWPA Information

The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association.

The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time.

During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today.

Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide.

Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

The Plan for Bucknell
