Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of six Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

“... The pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” - Christy Mathewson in his Book “Won in the Ninth” Written in 1910

Stefan Aleksic The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to

succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with

Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded

for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics setting the stAndArd of excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

In addition to the 124 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 124.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Bucknell Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on gradepoint averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

2013 Men’s Water Polo 2013 Season Preview “It’s not the same team as last year. We have new student-athletes. This team hasn’t won anything. The team last year won a Southern Championship. We have forgotten about last year. It’s a completely new team and a new year and I have no idea how much success we will have.” Bucknell third-year head coach John McBride matter-of-factly said those words just a couple days before the start of preseason practice for the 2013 campaign. While he might not know how good the Bison will be this fall, most observers think Bucknell should be at least as good as last year’s squad that won the school’s first-ever Southern Championships crown and came an overtime loss away from the program’s first NCAA bid in nearly 30 years. The Bison, who are ranked 14th in the preseason national poll, lost only two seniors to graduation in the offseason. However, those two seniors were integral to the team’s success last fall. Honorable Mention All-American Brian Barron and current professional goalie Matt Napleton departed, but Bucknell returns plenty of firepower with four players who have registered at least 100 career points and one other who has 98. “The guys that are returning now know what it takes to get to that level, so they have been very motivated in their offseason training,” said McBride, referencing last year’s postseason success. “Their attitude is fantastic. They are very excited, but it’s my job to bring them back to reality. They can’t just walk in and repeat the process again.” If the Bison are to achieve even more postseason success this fall it will be on the defensive end of the pool. “We are always a defensive-minded team,” stated McBride. “We practice very little offense. Defense is the focus and that’s what these guys will be working on the next three months.” One key question entering the season is the back line of the defense. Junior Keegan Williams will be taking over the goalkeeper position from Napleton, a two-time all-conference selection. Williams appeared in 12 games over his first two years, has 49 career saves and a .510 save percentage in a reserve capacity. "I think Keegan will be great," predicted McBride. "He's had the opportunity to play behind one of the best goalies on the East Coast. There are going to be growing pains with him now having to be the man, but I think he will be fine and we expect him to make the blocks he is supposed to make. Just because he is new doesn't mean the expectations won't be the same as when Napleton was here." While Williams is expected to join the starting lineup for the first time, Bucknell has five returning starters and one reserve who played starters minutes. Four of those players are part of the six-member senior class. "A lot of the seniors got thrown into starting roles as sophomores," explained McBride. "Coming so close to NCAAs last year has motivated them to be really good leaders and let the younger guys know how big of a deal the next step is. Without those guys leading the way we won't have success." Much of last year's success can be traced to the combination Bucknell had at the center position with Jack Else and Mike Kimble. Else typically started games and then the two would sub in and out on nearly every goal in an attempt to wear down the opposition. "We're going to do the same thing," said McBride. "We have a potent one-two Nick Hale punch and are going to use it. They want

to win bad and they know they are not done getting better." Else, an Honorable Mention All-America selection, was second on the team with 55 goals last year and his 133 ejections drawn nearly doubled his own school record of 78. Else enters his final campaign with a programrecord 238 ejections drawn, nearly 33 percent more than anyone else since 2000, the first year the statistic was tracked. Kimble was second on the squad with 37 ejections drawn and his 48 goals ranked fourth. Else and Kimble combined for 103 of Bucknell's 333 goals. Sophomore Stefan Aleksic was named the Eastern Championship Rookie of the Tournament last November after totaling six goals and three assists and netting the game-winning score in the semifinals against No. 20 Princeton. That postseason performance capped a year in which he led the team in points (101) and assists (50). His team-high 30 field blocks nearly doubled the next highest total on the squad. "Stefan is solid," commented McBride. "He is not going to make many mistakes and he is going to take advantage of the opportunities to score. He is still adjusting to NCAA water polo and needs to do a better job on the defensive end of not getting ejected." Senior Alex Nowlin, who is a team captain along with Else and Kimble, adds to the potent goal-scoring punch of the Bison. He ranked third on the team with 84 points (38g, 46a) last year and enters his senior season three points shy of 200 for his career. Nowlin needs just nine assists to crack the program's career top-10 list. "Alex is a leader on offense," praised McBride. "He's a guy we need in there in critical situations, like six-on-fives. He is a vocal leader and has a high water polo IQ." Senior Julian Colina and sophomore Nick Hale are two more returning starters who will contribute this coming year. Colina started 30 games a year ago and totaled 48 points (31g, 17a), while Hale registered 35 points (17g, 18a) as a rookie. "Julian is a smart player who comes from a water polo family," said McBride. "He's just a dependable guy. When he's in the water I am confident he will do the right thing. "I expect Nick to get better and better. He has just scratched the surface of his abilities and is ready to take that next step and be a force on both ends of the pool." Due to the success and talent of so many veterans, McBride will rely on the rest of the roster for depth and to fill certain roles. Among the most prominent of those players is senior Stephen Norton. The veteran appeared in 22 games a year ago and totaled six goals and five assists, including the game-winning score at Santa Clara. "Our role players are going to get their minutes," mentioned McBride. "They are going to do what's asked of them and are going to contribute. They have an expectation from us that they will be role players and hopefully they fill those roles." Despite losing just two seniors to graduation, Bucknell has seven freshmen on the 2013 roster. McBride thinks many of the newcomers have the talent to earn playing time, but must adjust to the college game. Bucknell opens its 2013 season Sept. 7-8 at the Navy Invite. The Bison will play at home in Kinney Natatorium Sept. 13-15 and Oct. 12-13.

2013 Men’s Water Polo John McBride Head Coach Third Year Rhode Island ’92 John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the previous seven years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. National Team, serving as head coach of the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009. Just two years into his Bucknell tenure, McBride has already guided the Bison programs for four seasons and been a part of 55 victories. He has led the men’s team to back-to-back above-.500 records, a 2012 Southern Championships title and the program’s first Eastern Championship title game appearance in nearly 20 years. The men have finished above .500 six times in the last seven years and have had nine consecutive top-five finishes at Easterns. The women’s squad has collected 23 victories the last two springs while playing extremely challenging schedules that have featured 23 ranked foes, including 14 in 2012. While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. The men’s squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division title, its first conference crown in nearly 25 years. Additionally, the team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and finished as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship. On the women’s side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Championship titles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Championship, the best showing at Brown since 2001. Both the men’s and women’s squads appeared regularly in the national top20 rankings during McBride’s tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Division selections and 22 All-East players. Additionally, three Bears earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Brown’s men’s team had the highest team grade-point average in the nation for four years, while the women ranked in the top three nationally four times. A goalie on the U.S. National “B” Team in 1993, McBride has become a recognizable face in National Team circles. In addition to his duties as the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he has served as head coach of the Southeast Zone Olympic Development Program. Academy and eventually graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in 1996. He then served as a patrolman and SWAT officer for the North Providence Police from 1996 to 2004. McBride got his start in coaching in 2001 when he founded the Newport Lady Tritons Water Polo Club. He proceeded to coach the club, which was made up of high school-aged players, until 2003. At that time, McBride founded the Ocean State Masters Swim Team, which featured more than 100 athletes who competed in master’s swim meets and triathlons all over the world. McBride’s most recent start-up project was the Bruno Water Polo Club, which he began as a non-profit organization in Providence, R.I., in 2007. The club gives inner-city youth an opportunity to enjoy the sport of water polo. McBride and his wife, Sam, have two daughters, Grace (13) and Lily (11).

Dick Russell - CWPA Hall of Fame The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced that former Bucknell men’s water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery Rock, would compose the initial class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002. Both Russell and Hunkler laid the foundation for the organization that exists today and were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years. Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical education and developed a local swim class program. It was there he founded a water polo club in 1968, which continued until 1977, when the team achieved varsity status. Between 1977 and 1986, Russell’s water polo teams tallied an amazing record of 223-68-4. This consistent success made Russell the first coach in Bucknell history to record more than 100 victories in two sports, swimming and water polo. Under Russell the water polo teams won four Eastern Championships and competed in the NCAA Championship five times. He was named Eastern Water Polo Coach of the Year in 1985. Although it seemed minor at the time, one of his biggest achievements has had a tremendous impact on the sport throughout the country. Russell was the founder of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, now known as the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Originally including only a few teams, his pioneer work in establishing this league laid the foundation for the nationwide conference that boasts over 220 teams today. In 1968, Russell began his tenure at Bucknell as head swim coach and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1994. While at the helm, he led the men’s swim program to a 154-121 record in dual meets, along with 11 conference championships. He was also named a Master Coach by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association in 1978. Russell began his coaching career at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, amassing an 85-14 dual meet record before being named head swimming and golf coach, as well as a football assistant at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. While at Kenyon, Coach Russell won 33 of 52 dual meets and four Ohio Athletic Conference Championships in his years as coach. Russell was inducted into the Bucknell University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 and was presented with a plaque commemorating his contributions to the Bison water polo and swimming programs in January 2007. Russell passed away in April of 2008 at the age of 75. In the summer of 2009, it was announced that Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards had pledged $1.5 million to the Bucknell men’s and women’s water polo programs in honor of Dick Russell.

CWPA Information The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
