Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches and staffs paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Departments programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

What it means to be a bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

- Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

In addition to the 122 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2012.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 22-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 15 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

Season Outlook Three years out from its last Patriot League Championship, Bucknell softball has a new coach and a new approach. The Bison are hoping that’s what it takes to get back on track and recapture that 2010 magic. Bucknell has nine newcomers on its roster in 2013 and three of those are on the coaching staff. In July 2012 the Bison welcomed Bonnie Skrenta as the fifth head coach in program history. Shortly after, she brought in assistants Maya Ripecky and Lindsay FreMary Horton itag to help lead the team. New to Bucknell but not to coaching – Skrenta registered a 280-1272 (.687) record in 10 years in her previous post at DePauw University – the first-year staff has a clear strategy to get the Orange & Blue back in the Patriot League mix and in the hunt for another title. “The philosophy will be to be offensive-minded. We want to score a lot of runs,” said Skrenta ahead of the season’s opening tournament at Cleveland State. “The top teams in the Patriot League have an average of scoring five runs a game or so, and we need to get our average up.” Bucknell averaged 2.0 runs per game, including 1.3 in conference matchups, last season. The squad’s leader in runs scored Mary Horton returns this spring. For the Bison to be successful, however, they’ll need more production up and down the lineup. That collective effort will be a key focus for Skrenta’s Bison and a challenge as she begins to put her own stamp on the program. “Everyone has bought in to the team objectives,” explained Skrenta. “Our goal is to win every game we play. That means there will be players that have roles that are very supportive and that could be a challenge at times. I can see us honing in on 12 batters and really investing a lot of at bats to a small number of people. Staying focused on team goals and putting the team before the individual successes is the focus, day in and day out. The more the team has success, the more individuals have success.” Bucknell should have plenty of personnel options for obtaining that team success. The Bison lost just one player to graduation from a year ago and brought in six new faces to deepen the field in the pitchers’ circle, behind the plate and in the outfield. Add that to seven returning starters and Bucknell boasts a solid mix of veteran experience and rejuvenating rookies that could be the perfect combination to get back to the top of the standings. PITCHER After posting a team ERA of 5.35 last spring, Bucknell’s pitching staff is expected to be one of its strong suits. Joining seniors Alex MacLean and Bridget Gates on the pitching staff are freshmen Amanda Fazio, Dana Nielsen and Cindy Cherness. MacLean and Gates got the bulk of the work in 2012, pitching 238 of the team’s 275 innings and the senior duo will be looked to for continued leadership in the circle. “All winter long they’ve been working together as a team on how to tackle a seven-inning game. There’s a nice mix of movement and speed,” praised Skrenta. “Dana, Amanda and Cindy will make a big impact on the mound. That’s to complement two senior pitchers who I think needed some relief last year,” Skrenta continued. “They’re very strong. They throw very hard. They have command of the game, but they needed some other threats to help them trick batters.” MacLean enters her final campaign with the Bison with some program standards within her sights. After three complete seasons, the former Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Tournament MVP ranks second all-time at Bucknell in career appearances (96) and starts (76). She is also fourth in program annals in strikeouts with 299, needing 65 more to take over the record. CATCHER Whereas Bucknell has veterans MacLean and Gates to anchor its pitching staff, the Bison will rely on a younger contingent at catcher. Vying for a starting spot are sophomores Kristen Zahn and Alex Wells and freshman Cheyanna Young. The trio has combined for just 10 collegiate starts behind the plate, a position that was held down last year by then-senior Meredith Dickson.

4

“The catcher position will be an exciting, dynamic place. The only thing we can say is that our catchers call the game, and it will be the catcher that keeps our pitchers calm and under control,” said Skrenta. “It’s a big job. We need someone with confidence saying, ‘This is where I want it.’” Also key to personnel choices at catcher will be offensive contribution. Zahn was one of Bucknell’s top freshman hitters and led the team in stolen bases last spring. Wells saw most of her action coming off the bench as a pinch hitter. INFIELD Some of Bucknell’s most experienced players will occupy the infield defensively. Anchoring the corners will be juniors Mallory Lyons and Courtney Conover, but four other Bison returners will be competing for a share of the playing time as well. Lyons made 25 of her 35 starts at third base and offensively led the team in extra-base hits a year ago. Conover looks to be the early favorite at first base having made a majority of her starts in 2012 at that spot. “We’re going to try to score runs this year and right now, Mallory and Courtney are managing their at bats in a really junior-like way,” said Skrenta. “What they also bring on the corners is a vocal presence. We like the leadership at the anchor positions.” Also looking to get in the mix at the corners will be Erin Cox, Colie Escobar, who also saw time in the outfield last spring, Sophia Geraci and Kasey Segiel. Bucknell will likely turn to Horton and Cydnee Sanders in the middle infield. Neither is a stranger to their positions as Horton made 25 starts at second base and Sanders was among the starting nine at shortstop 30 times last spring. Horton became one of the most decorated Bison for her play last year as she was voted First Team All-Patriot League by the conference’s coaches. She was recognized again this winter, earning a nod to the inaugural Preseason All-Patriot League Team. “She is by far an offensive leader and we want to keep her as a threat,” said Skrenta of Horton, who led the team in batting average (.313), runs scored (14) and slugging percentage (.374) in 2012. “She’s a tremendous infielder and our leader on the field.” Joining Horton in the middle infield will be Sanders and veterans Laura Sandford and Caryn Connors. Although just a sophomore, Sanders is hardly untested, having played in 43 of the team’s 45 games and finishing among Bucknell’s leaders in runs scored and stolen bases in her rookie campaign. “Sanders had a tremendous start and will be in the mix with Laura and Caryn,” said Skrenta. Sandford missed being in the lineup just once last spring, making a majority of her appearances at second base. Connors played exclusively in the outfield a year ago. OUTFIELD Every class will be represented in the outfield pool thanks to senior Cassie Greenhawk, junior Caryn Connors, sophomore Tori Robinson and freshmen Mariah Midyette and Lauren Swindell. Greenhawk and Robinson are expected to be stalwarts again this year after making more outfield starts than any other Bison last spring. Robinson’s duties came exclusively in center field where she made 32 starts. Greenhawk, who has also spent a good portion of her career as one of Bucknell’s go-to pinch runners, made 30 starts in the outfield, primarily in left and right. Escobar, Sanders and Zahn also combined for 33 outfield starts last spring, but the trio is expected to spend their time elsewhere in the field this season. As the three remaining returning outfielders, Robinson, Greenhawk and Kristen Zahn & Connors will be looked to to step up Cassie Greenhawk their offense to continue contributing to the team’s efforts. “We will see some freshmen making an impact in the outfield,” predicted Skrenta. “You’ll see Cassie and Tori, and we’re excited about both players and what they bring to the team. Mariah Midyette and Lauren Swindell are very aggressive on the base paths. They’re solid in the outfield and they’re both very strong offensive threats. We are very excited about them as their transition to collegiate softball has been strong both on offense and in the outfield.”

Coaching Staff

Bonnie Skrenta

Maya Ripecky

Head Coach First Season at Bucknell Providence ’00

Assistant Coach First Season at Bucknell Tufts ’09

Bonnie Skrenta, the 10-year head coach at DePauw University, was named the new head coach at Bucknell in July 2012. Skrenta guided DePauw to five NCAA Tournament appearances, and she left as the program’s all-time winningest softball coach with a 280-127-2 (.687) record. Skrenta oversaw quite a turnaround during her tenure at DePauw. The Tigers finished 12-24-1 in the season before she assumed the head coaching duties at the age of 24. By her third season DePauw was back on the winning side of the ledger with a 19-18-1 record, and in year No. 4 the Tigers finished 31-10 and a perfect 12-0 in the Southern College Athletic Conference. In 2007, Skrenta’s squad finished 37-7 overall, 11-1 in the conference, and earned the program’s very first NCAA Division III Tournament berth. The 2007 squad also crowned the school’s first All-American, and the 37 wins established a new program record, only to be surpassed a year later when the team finished 40-4. DePauw hit the 40-win mark again in 2010 when it went 40-9. DePauw made five straight NCAA Regional Tournament appearances from 2007-11, and the Tigers advanced to the Division III College World Series in 2007, 2010 and 2011. The 2008 squad was ranked No. 1 in the nation at one point late in the season and produced a 37-game winning streak. Skrenta was a three-time NFCA Central Region Coach of the Year. During her 10 years at DePauw she mentored three All-Americans, one Honda Division III Athlete of the Year finalist, 27 all-region players, 36 all-conference selections and four conference players of the year. In addition, each of her last six teams at DePauw posted a combined grade-point average of at least 3.32. “I am pleased and excited to welcome Bonnie Skrenta to the Bison Athletics family,” said director of athletics and recreation John Hardt at the time of her hiring. “Bonnie built a very highly respected Division III program at DePauw, which is a high-quality academic institution. We feel that everything she has done to raise the profile of the DePauw softball program will translate well at Bucknell.” “I am extremely excited to come to Bucknell and become a part of this wonderful academic and athletic tradition,” said Skrenta last June. “I am very grateful to John Hardt for giving me the opportunity to lead the Bison softball program. It is a tremendous responsibility, but I am ready to get going and help move this program back to the top of the Patriot League. The facilities here are first-class, and everyone that I have met so far has been extremely welcoming and supportive. They definitely want the softball program to be successful here. To have the opportunity to work with the best and brightest student-athletes every day is really inspiring, and I can’t wait to get to know all of them.” After arriving at DePauw in 2002, Skrenta also served as a part-time faculty member in the department of kinesiology, where she taught classes in aerobic conditioning and free weights. She was a member of the school’s Eating Disorder Interdisciplinary Task Force and was an advisor to the Peer Mentor Leadership Program. Beyond her coaching and teaching duties, Skrenta also served as a member of the NCAA Central Region Ranking Committee and All-Region Committee. She sat on the NFCA All-America Committee in 2011 and was a member of the NCAA Championship Committee in 2012. Skrenta was an outstanding student-athlete herself. She started her undergraduate career at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where she played varsity basketball and softball and earned NFCA Third Team All-Region honors on the diamond. Prior to her junior year she transferred to Providence College, where she was a twoyear member of the Friars’ Division I program. She captained the team as a senior in 2000 and received the Paul Connolly Award for Distinguished Student-Athletes. Skrenta graduated cum laude from Providence with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics. Skrenta went on to earn a masters degree in exercise and sport studies from Smith College in 2002. While at Smith she served as a graduate assistant softball coach and completed a teaching fellowship.

Maya Ripecky joined the Bucknell softball coaching staff during the summer of 2012. A two-sport standout at Tufts University, Ripecky spent the last year on firstyear head coach Bonnie Skrenta’s staff at DePauw University where she helped lead the Tigers to an appearance in the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship game. At DePauw, Ripecky served as an assistant coach with both the softball and volleyball squads. She aided with the development of training programs and onfield coaching duties as well as scheduling, fundraising and recruiting for both teams during her tenure with the Tigers. On the field, Ripecky oversaw a pitching staff that lowered its ERA from 3.78 in 2011 to 2.55 a year later. Ripecky’s trend of improvement was a continuation of her time as a softball and volleyball assistant at Trinity College from 2009-11. Under Ripecky’s tutelage, the Bantams took a 3.43 ERA in 2009 and lowered it steadily to 2.03 for the 2011 campaign. Trinity’s hitters made similar progress, improving from a .289 batting average and 145 runs scored to .315 and 217 scored over the course of three seasons. Out of competition, Ripecky also served as a physical education instructor and a facilitator for Bantam Athletes Negate Traditional Stereotypes, a discussion-based program with student-athletes to raise awareness and empower students to play an active role in reducing sexual and homophobic violence, harassment and abuse. Prior to assuming her duties on the sideline, Ripecky starred as both a defensive specialist on the volleyball court and an outfielder on the softball field at Tufts. The native of Chicago, Ill., received the Hester L. Sargent Award as the university’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete in 2009 following a campaign that saw her set six single-season records. At the time of her graduation, she held Tufts’ top marks in batting average (.477), runs scored (48), hits (71), doubles (16), games played (47) and total bases (102). Ripecky also finished her career among the top 10 in batting average, runs scored, hits, doubles, RBI, total bases, home runs, slugging percentage and games played. Ripecky’s teams at Tufts made several postseason appearances. The softball squad won three New England Small College Athletic Association Conference (NESCAC) Championships and claimed four NCAA Tournament berths with her on the roster. The Jumbos also finished with a 44-3 record during her senior season when she was named a Second Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) AllAmerican as well as a First Team All-New England Region, First Team All-ECAC and First Team All-NESCAC selection. On the court, Ripecky was named a New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Senior All-Star and led Tufts to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2008. Ripecky graduated from Tufts in 2009 with a degree in child development.

Lindsay Freitag Assistant Coach First Season at Bucknell Frostburg State ’10 A 2010 graduate of Frostburg State University, Lindsay Freitag joined Bonnie Skrenta’s staff prior to the 2013 season. While earning her bachelor’s degree in health and physical education at Frostburg State, Freitag was an integral member of the Bobcats squad that won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship during her senior year. She also helped the squad tie the program record in single-season wins and qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2010. A captain as a senior, the outfielder was also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, serving terms as both treasurer and secretary. Following graduation, Freitag remained at FSU to complete her graduate degree. She filled a number of roles during her studies, including serving as a graduate assistant in the administrative, intramural and athletic communications offices. Her duties in those positions ranged from fundraising and event management to training student employees and publication design. Freitag returned to her alma mater’s field in 2012 when she served as a volunteer assistant coach. There she worked closely with the Bobcats’ outfielders and developed various offseason training and conditioning schedules. The Baltimore, Md., native was also charged with overseeing the team’s academic progress. Freitag graduated from FSU in December 2010 with a Master’s degree in Administration & Supervision.

A four-time all-league selection in softball, Fink batted .440 during her senior year and earned Patriot League Player of the Year and First Team Academic All-America honors. Fink owned a .378 career batting average and never hit below .344 in her four-year career. The rare first-ballot Hall of Famer was an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in 1993. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003. Sharon Nichols (’91): The most dominating softball pitcher to ever wear the Orange and Blue, Nichols graduated with every pitching record, and to this day she still holds six Bucknell marks - including three career records. A perennial all-conference selection, she posted a 0.83 career earned run average, notched 332 strikeouts and had 51 victories in the circle. During her career she threw four no-hitters and a perfect game, and in 1991 she compiled a streak of 59.2 innings without allowing an earned run. As a senior, Nichols ranked sixth nationally with a 0.38 ERA and compiled a 16-6 mark with eight shutouts. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2001.

Dawn Becker (’85): An outstanding pitcher, Becker compiled one of the most impressive careers in Bucknell softball history. Becker set numerous Bucknell softball pitching records and was a two-time East Coast Conference Dawn Becker Scholar-Athlete and Second Team Academic All-American. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1997. Stacey Spitko (’88): An outstanding basketball and softball player, Spitko started every basketball game and all but two softball games in her career. En route, she set school records and earned Academic All-America honors in both sports. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1995.

Stacey Spitko

Jen Yuengling (’93): Considered one of the best catchers and leadoff hitters in the history of the Bucknell softball program, Yuengling’s .332 career average ranks ninth all-time. Yuengling was named to the All-East Coast Conference Team in 1990 and to the All-Patriot League squad in 1993. She was later named to the Patriot League All-Decade Team. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

Facilities Becker Field

Kinney Natatorium

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 22 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 122 Academic All-Americans in 40 years and 128 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 22 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka KLARC Front Entrance Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic AllAmericans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields with Becker Field for softball, Emmitt Field for soccer and Graham Field for field hockey and women’s lacrosse, including Holmes Stadium with covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Becker Field

Located on the west side of Route 15, Bucknell’s Charles & Karen Becker Field is the home venue for the Bison softball team. Adjacent to baseball’s Depew Field, the softball field is a fenced complex that contains a natural grass outfield with a manicured infield. The facility, named in honor of Hall of Famer Dawn Becker’s parents, underwent extensive renovations at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign and included new dugouts, scoreboard, backstop and playing surface. Bucknell owns a 220-216-4 (.505) all-time record on its home field. Becker Field is scheduled to host no fewer than a dozen games in 2013, including eight weekend Patriot League contests. Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its studentathletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores. • Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women’s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men’s crown. • Lehigh, a No. 15 seed, defeated No. 2 Duke 75-70 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game on March 16. The victory is up for a “best upset” award for the ESPYs. • Colgate’s Peter Baum became the first player in Patriot League history to win the Tewaaraton Award as the top collegiate lacrosse player, and also claimed the Lt. Enners Award for the same distinction. • Colgate’s Elise DeRoo was named the Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Army’s Brendan Buckley won the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. • DeRoo was also one of two nominees from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, along with Navy’s Jess Palacio. • Ten student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-Americans, including first-team selections for Army’s Brendan Buckley (lacrosse), Army’s Zach Price (Baseball), Bucknell’s Tim Bolte (Football) and Lehigh’s Jennifer Colquhoun (Softball). • 48 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition. • It was the first time in Patriot League men’s basketball history that three teams played in the postseason tournament: Lehigh (NCAA), Bucknell (NIT), American (CIT). • For just the second time in history, two teams won a postseason game as Bucknell also beat Arizona 65-54 in the first round of the NIT on March 14. • For the first time in League history, three women’s basketball teams earned postseason bids, as Navy went to the NCAA Tournament, American to the WNIT and Holy Cross to the WBI. In addition, the Crusaders defeated New Hampshire in the first round of the WBI, giving the League its first postseason victory since 1991. • Lehigh’s Chris Lum finished in second place for the Walter Payton award and was named ECAC FCS Offensive Player of the Year while earning multiple All-America honors. • Georgetown’s Andrew Schaetzke finished fourth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, was honored as ECAC FCS Defensive Player of the Year and became the ninth player in Patriot League history to earn consensus FCS All-America honors from the four major awarding organizations. • Eight players were named FCS All-Americans overall, with Lehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Bucknell’s Bryce Robertson joining Schaetzke as first-team selections. • Lehigh defeated CAA champion Towson 40-38 in the second round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Dec. 3 to become the first Patriot League team since 2003 to advance to the quarterfinal round. The Mountain Hawks went on to finish at No. 5 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com top 25 and won the ECAC FCS Lambert Cup. • Colgate and Lehigh both finished in the top 10 of the final Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media rankings, with the Raiders at No. 8 and the Mountain Hawks at No. 9. • Colgate’s Peter Baum was one of eight Patriot Leaguers to earn USILA All-America honors, and the only student-athlete on the first team. • Jess Palacio (Navy) was a second-team All-America selection by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and competed at both the NCAA Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field Championships. • Navy’s Laura Gorinski was invited to the NCAA Women’s Swimming Championships, where she competed in the 200 IM and 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

2010 PL Champs & NCAA Qualifiers Bucknell softball won the 2010 Patriot League Championship on May 15, twice coming from behind to defeat Colgate 4-3 (9 inn.) and 6-4 on the final day of play at West Point, N.Y. The championship was the second in program history and the first since 1997.

With its Patriot League Tournament success, Bucknell advanced to its first-ever NCAA Championships. In the Columbus, Ohio Regional on May 2122, the Bison took on nationally ranked California and the host Ohio State.

The Presidents’ Cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 24 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 17 times in its 22-year existence, including 13 of the last 15 years. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regularseason standings.
