Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of six Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility, while the 2014 CWPA Women’s Water Polo Championship is slated to be held at Kinney Natatorium this spring.

What it Means to

BE A BISON “... The pursuit of athletics in College Need not Interfere with a Fellow’s Studies, and if you Give a Boy a Well-Developed Body his Brain will get the Benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his Book Won in the Ninth, Written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a wellrounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. 1 | www.BucknellBison.com

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

In addition to the 125 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 124.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

2014 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo Season Preview “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face, and then it is all about survival.” That quote by former boxer Mike Tyson is one that Bison head coach John McBride references with regularity. The third-year coach is excited about the upcoming campaign because he has a team that knows how to respond to the adversity that is sure to attack at some point during the grueling season. “We finally have a team that identifies itself as water polo players,” commented McBride, who has 69 wins and five Eastern Championship berths in five seasons leading the Bison men’s and women’s programs. “They are aggressive. They are committed. They know what the task at hand is. They know what the season is all about and what we are faced with. They are motivated and ready to go.” Bucknell posted a disappointing 8-19 record a year ago, but some of the close losses or contests where the Bison gave up an early lead still grind at the competitive McBride. “The expectation is that we will be better than last year,” said McBride. “Team co-captain Julianne Valdes said it best when she noted we lost a lot of close games because of our attitude, and not because of a lack of skills, ability or fundamentals.” McBride noted it is a new year and a new team in 2014 and the motivation for the squad to qualify for the CWPA Championship in its own pool (April 25-27) will carry throughout the campaign. Valdes and fellow senior team captain Mackenzie Ferry remind their teammates everyday about the end-of-season tournament in their own pool. “JV and Mack know it’s their last year,” mentioned McBride. “They are coming to practice prepared and ready to help their younger teammates. It is very much a team culture right now and much of that can be credited to the leadership of our captains and our whole fiveperson senior class.” A three-year starter, Valdes is just the second player in program history to enter her senior season with more than 100 career goals and 100 career assists. She is coming off her second consecutive Second Team CWPA All-Southern Division selection and ranks in the top 10 in program history in four statistical categories. “Julianne is not the rah-rah emotional leader,” explained McBride. “She is determined. She is going to win at all costs and give everything she has to give. Both her and Mack live by the ‘not dead, don’t quit’ motto.” Ferry has shown a steady improvement throughout her career and is also coming off a Second Team CWPA All-Southern Division campaign. The Mechanicsbug, Pa., native was a regular member of the starting lineup for the first time last year and she finished with 13 goals and a career-high 21 assists. “We recruited Mack at Brown and the fact that I got here and have had the opportunity to see her develop into one of the top players on the East Coast is great,” praised McBride. “She has all the fundamentals. She has all the athletic gifts. She has the determination to win. Winning means more to her than anything.” Another senior, goalie Rena Heim, will also be critical to the success of the Bison in 2014. The two-year starter was the squad’s only goalkeeper last year, meaning she played all 864 minutes in cage and posted 259 saves and a save percentage north of 50 percent. This year Heim has a training partner in freshman goalie Haley Derrod. “Last year was difficult for Rena because when you are a goalie you need someone there with you,” described McBride. “It is a really hard position and I expect a lot from goalies. She has been lights-out in practice. We are never going to pitch a shutout, but I expect her to make the saves she is supposed to make and put us in position to win every game.” Junior Taylor Barnett had an explosive freshman campaign in 2012 when she was named the CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year after scoring a team-high 67 goals. She battled injuries and a posi-

tion adjustment last spring and her production dropped off. However, thanks to a move back to the center spot, McBride expects Barnett to eclipse her numbers from two years ago. “Moving Taylor to the perimeter last year might not have been the best for her mentally, but going back to two-meters this year has been great and she is 100 percent behind it,” mentioned McBride. “She and Hannah [Sunday] are going to be monsters in the middle and will wear out the other team.” Sunday is a sophomore who was second to Valdes with 36 goals last season while alternating in the middle with then-senior Krystle Morgan. Sunday was second on the squad with 49 ejections drawn and her five goals in a season-opening win over Mercyhurst marked the most by a Bison all year. “I expect Hannah to continue to be a top goal scorer and draw a lot of ejections,” said McBride. “She is so long and fundamentally sound. Last year she was on step one, this year she is on step two, so there will be significant improvement as she continues to progress.” While Barnett and Sunday will spend much of their time in the trenches, senior Stephanie Ovalle will use her speed to her advantage on the perimeter. A veteran of 92 games and 41 starts over the last three years, Ovalle ranks fifth on the program’s career sprints won list with 71, including a team-high 31 last year. “Stephanie had to play center defense last year and we will move her from that role because she is super fast and more equipped to play outside,” commented McBride. “We expect her to be all over the place and score a lot of counter goals.” Junior Barbara Peterson has filled in for the injured Amanda Skonezney (2012) and Barnett (2013) in the starting lineup the last two years and will battle for a starting spot from the beginning this season. She has totaled 41 goals, 15 assists and 26 steals in 63 games over her first two campaigns. “The good thing about Barbara is she never stops learning,” praised McBride. “She knows her role and is a tremendous outside shooter. Her goal total will go up and she will be an even bigger factor in our success.” Classmate Sayeh Bozorghadad will continue to provide depth and fill a role as a defensive stopper. She has appeared in 63 games over the last two years and will team up with Peterson on what McBride refers to as the “21” side of the pool. “Sayeh has a high water polo IQ,” praised McBride. “Her minutes should go up a lot this year.” Sophomore lefty Eleanor Marrs will factor into the offensive game plan once again this season. She finished her rookie campaign with seven goals and 13 assists, but was often tentative about shooting too much. “Eleanor has to shoot this year,” remarked McBride. “She has a great shot and has the ability to be a difference-maker for us. We expect a lot of offensive production from her.” Senior Samantha Deana as well as sophomores Katherine DeRuff and Martine McCarthy provided depth last year and all three have improved heading into 2014. In addition to the 13 returning letterwinners, including five returning starters, Bucknell has five freshmen joining the program this spring. “Like any other freshman class, they still have a lot to learn,” explained McBride. “They are talented across the board and are very competitive. We want players that identify themselves Stephanie as water polo players and love the sport and this freshman class certainly fits Ovalle that mold.”

CWPA Information

The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
