Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of seven Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern and 2014 CWPA Women’s Water Polo Championships and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

What it Means to

BE A BISON “... THE PURSUIT OF ATHLETICS IN COLLEGE NEED NOT INTERFERE WITH A FELLOW’S STUDIES, AND IF YOU GIVE A BOY A WELL-DEVELOPED BODY HIS BRAIN WILL GET THE BENEFIT OF IT.” — CHRISTY MATHEWSON, IN HIS BOOK WON IN THE NINTH, WRITTEN IN 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a wellrounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. 1 | www.BucknellBison.com

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times, including most recently in the fall of 2013. Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 402 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 498 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 341 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including three in 2013-14.

Bucknell has earned 98 Patriot League championships in 24 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 125 conference players of the year, 104 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 581 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2014.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 24-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 17 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 126.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

2015 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo Season Preview With the loss of five starters from last y year’s team and the a addition of six freshm expected to play men s signifi cant minutes, B Bucknell fourth-year h head coach John McB Bride will use the early p part of the long 2015 c campaign figuring out e exactly what his team w bring to the table. will “We are going to be y younger. We are goi ing to be faster. But we don’t really know what we have right now,” commented McBride a couple days prior to the team’s season-opening weekend. “There are a thousand different lineups we can utilize. We are going to continue to evaluate the skill set of each player and will aim to get better throughout the year so we can peak at the CWPA Championship.” Bucknell is coming off a sixth-place finish at last year’s CWPA Championship, its best showing since 2010. The Bison also had a fivewin improvement from the previous year and McBride expects the victory total to continue to rise. Due to so many new faces on the roster, which includes 10 total freshmen and sophomores, McBride set up the Bison schedule to start a little later in February than many other teams to gain some additional preseason practice time to work on the fundamentals and develop a strong base. “The more we can practice, the more we can gel as a team and learn to communicate,” noted McBride, who has 99 career wins at Bucknell as coach of the men’s and women’s programs. “We won’t be great at everything out of the gate, but our younger players will have some time to adapt and learn our philosophies.” In addition to easing into the season, Bucknell has the luxury of playing its first 10 games at Kinney Natatorium, a place it has excelled, winning nearly 63 percent of its home contests since the facility opened in 2003. Among the Bison that won’t need much early season adjustment is junior Hannah Sunday, a First Team All-CWPA Southern Division selection a year ago. The junior co-captain broke the school singleseason record for ejections drawn (120) last spring and will continue to hold down the starting role at the physical center position. “Hannah is a huge part of our offense and is a great defender as well,” noted McBride about the team’s second-leading goal scorer (33) a year ago. “She is a great leader that works hard, never misses a practice and never quits. She is tough as nails and it rubs off on other players when they see her getting after it.” Last year, Sunday was the only true center on the roster and was forced to play about 25 minutes per game. Freshman Shyla Lintz will be counted on to split time with Sunday this season. “Shyla has a tremendous upside,” praised McBride about the rookie who went to the same high school (Cumberland Valley) as Sunday. “Having the ability to put her in there to battle will be nice and will keep Hannah fresher and even more effective.” After three years as a valuable reserve, Sunday’s fellow co-captain Sayeh Bozorghadad is expected to move into the starting lineup. The senior is a veteran of 89 career games and has totaled 18 goals, 24 assists and 22 steals over her first three years. “Sayeh is a very smart player with a high IQ,” said McBride. “She understands everything we are trying to do and sees the pool well. She mixes it up with the bigger players and is a vocal leader who holds her teammates accountable.” Bozorghadad is one of two seniors on the roster along with Taylor

SAYEH BOZORGHADAD

Barnett. Barnett was an all-conference choice and Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2012, but has been hampered by injuries each of the last two seasons. The Houston, Texas, native is eight goals shy of 100 for her career and her 87 ejections drawn place her 14th on Bucknell’s all-time list. “It has been a long road for Taylor the last couple of years fighting with her shoulder injuries,” mentioned McBride. “We think we have her ready to go. It is her senior year so I don’t think there is an injury or any pain that is going to keep her from finishing strong.” Barnett was Bucknell’s top goal scorer as a rookie, but that honor this season could go to junior Eleanor Marrs. After deferring to upperclassmen as a freshman in 2013, Marrs became an offensive force last spring, ranking fourth on the team with 29 goals and second on the squad with 63 points. The left-hander is one of two returning Bison to have started all 27 games a year ago. “Eleanor is super fast and a great defender,” commented McBride. “Her freshman year she didn’t want to shoot the ball. Last year we made it mandatory. We are sticking with that same theme. We told her to take the shots and that we trust her to make the right decisions.” Sophomore Tegan Stanbach is likely to fill one of the gaps in the starting lineup. The center defender saw action in every game last season and totaled nine goals and 11 assists in addition to ranking fifth on the team with 15 steals. She earned CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week honors after the season-opening Bison Invitational. “Tegan has gotten a lot better,” said McBride. “She had limited playing time last year because she was learning the game. The center defender position is tough to play, but she has started to figure it out. She will make a big impact for us.” Junior Martine McCarthy, who was forced to play out of position last year, will add depth at the utility position and be a solid player on the perimeter. McBride noted that junior Kathrine DeRuff will continue to be a strong leader in her role, while sophomores Julia Ingersoll and Julia Ulrich will see additional playing time this year after learning the system last season. The big battle on the team is at the goalkeeper position where sophomore Haley Derrod and freshman Manuela Herrera are both in the mix to win the starting job. McBride expects both goalies to play three games the opening weekend of the season and their play in the pool will decide who is eventually named the full-time starter. “Goalie is going to be a tightly contested position,” predicted McBride. “They are both really good. It is up to them to decide who is going to play. It is always nice to have two people who push each other and understand nothing is given, it is earned.” Derrod last year served as a backup to four-year starter Rena Heim. She recorded a team-best .538 save percentage in 10 appearances. McBride is high on his freshman class that features Gigi Joudrie, Kendyl Johnson, Colleen Barron and Marta Considine in addition to Herrera and Lintz. “All our freshmen will play. Some will start. They will all make contributions,” said McBride. “They are all fast and will help us in our counter attack, which is an important part of our HANNAH SUNDAY offense.”

HALL OF FAME

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

The women’s water polo program had its first inductee into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2014. Former head coach Lynn Kachmarik was part of the seven-person class that was honored on Homecoming Weekend.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first four years. Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the women’s water polo team in 2014-15 are Martine McCarthy and Tegan Stanbach. Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include: • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime

Lynn Kachmarik was a true coaching pioneer at Bucknell, mentoring both men and women student-athletes in four different sports from 1982-98. Kachmarik was a world-class water polo player when she came to Bucknell in 1982 as a lecturer in physical education as well as head women’s swimming and diving coach. She is the longest-tenured and winningest coach in the history of that program, compiling a 120-52-1 dual-meet record in 16 years. She led the Bison to the 1987 East Coast Conference team championship and coached 43 individuals and 17 relays to league titles. In 1994, Kachmarik succeeded the legendary Dick Russell as head coach of the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving program, and she led the men to a 31-9 dual-meet record and six individual Patriot League gold medals from 1994-98. In 1984, Kachmarik was appointed assistant coach of the Bison men’s water polo team, and following her first year the team picked her as the recipient of the Scott Schulte Award, presented to the “individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo.” While still serving as women’s swimming coach, Kachmarik was named head coach of the men’s water polo team in 1987, making her the first woman to coach a men’s water polo team in NCAA history. She was named Eastern Coach of theYear in 1987, helped lead the 1988 team to a No. 17 national ranking and posted a four-year record of 56-46. During that time Kachmarik was an avid proponent and advocate for women’s water polo, and during the 1998-99 academic year she helped that sport achieve varsity status at Bucknell for the first time. She was named that program’s very first head coach while relinquishing her swimming coaching duties after 16 years. As a water polo player, Kachmarik captained the U.S. National Team for six years and was a team member for 10. She was also an assistant coach for two additional years. Kachmarik was named to the All-World Team in 1978 and is also a member of the Slippery Rock Athletics Hall of Fame, Collegiate Water Polo Association Hall of Fame and USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

CWPA INFORMATION The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
