Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-class pool, which accommodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of seven Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, three Eastern Water Polo Championships and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to the gorgeous facility.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014. All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 443 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 314 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.

In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

In addition, Bucknell has had 129 conference players of the year, 110 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 605 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2015.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 25-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 18 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 126.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher educaon, thereby advancing and drawing a en on to the mission, core values, and educa onal goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore commi ed to maintaining Bucknell’s high na onal ranking for student-athletes’ gradua on rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to con nued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nomina ons, based on gradepoint averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priori es and suppor ng student-athletes’ educa on, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athle c opportuni es Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebra ng challenge and compe on; and by preparing par cipants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athle c programs and recrea onal opportuni es aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In crea ng shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substan ally to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long rela onships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the Na onal Collegiate Athle c Associaon (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of compe on maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps posi on Bucknell apart from other Na onal Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the compe ve success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings dis nc on and na onal recognion to Bucknell. A student-centered opera on, the Department is commi ed to providing equitable opportuni es to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regula ons of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athle c Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

2015 men’s water polo 2015 Season Preview Bucknell is coming off a strong 17-9 campaign that featured it advancing to the Southern Championships tle game for the fourth me in five years and pos ng its 11th consecu ve top-five showing at the CWPA Championship. Five starters, including the leading point scorer and both players at the all-important center posi on, return as Bucknell aims to improve on last year's record, which was at least eight games over .500 for the first me since the program's last NCAA berth in 1985. "Last year was OK," commented Bison fi h-year head coach John McBride. "We went to California and had a lot of success, but we were a li le overconfident going into the CWPA Championship and that hurt us." Bucknell's mid-season trip to California featured an unblemished 5-0 record and marked the first me a Bison squad had returned from the west coast without a loss. Bucknell, which climbed as high as No. 12 in the na onal polls and finished the season at No. 17, defeated four ranked opponents on the trip. "A lot of guys are going to have to step up this year," said McBride, who helped the Bison equal their most wins since 2008 last fall. "We didn't lose a lot in terms of numbers, but we will see some players stepping into new roles. We have good leadership and will build upon lessons from last year." The team also has a strong advantage going into the season because they had the opportunity to take a training trip to Serbia and Greece this past May. McBride thinks the trip, which featured a handful of games against talented club programs, mainly helped the younger players on the team as well as the development of centers Jeff Hagen and Nate Hunter. The three seniors on the roster — Stefan Aleksic, Jedd Thayer and Max Wilder — are team captains. Aleksic, a two- me Honorable Men on AllAmerican, will lead the way in the pool. The Belgrade, Serbia, na ve has been one of the best players in the Collegiate Water Polo Associa on since his rookie campaign. He led the Bison with 89 points (53g, 36a) last fall and has scored at least 40 goals each season. He enters his final year with 146 goals and 122 assists in his career, both team-high figures. "Stefan is going to have to be a leader in the pool," noted McBride, who has led Bucknell to a 63-46 mark over his first four years on the Kinney Natatorium pool deck. "I look to him to keep things calm and organized. If he is healthy, then we have a chance to be good because the defense has to guard him, which leaves everybody else open." McBride praises the other two captains for the fact they have accepted and embraced their roles. The duo of Thayer and Wilder have combined for 14 goals and 17 assists in 80 career appearances. "Jedd and Max are great leaders," said McBride. "They always work

Stefan Aleksic

hard at prac ce and are always ready to answer the call. Their teammates have a lot of respect for them." A strong center posi on is a hallmark of McBride-led teams and this year will be no excep on. Hagen, a sophomore, started the second half of the year and ranked third on the team with 40 goals. His 38 ejec ons drawn were second on the squad to Hunter, a junior who drew 58 to go along with his 10 goals. "We have a solid one-two punch at center," men oned McBride. "Even experienced centers start off slow, but we plan on making sure they are up to speed and feeling confident at championship me of year. Both guys had great performances in Serbia this summer and I expect them to be the focus of our offense." Junior Sean Daley was one of only two Bison to start all 26 games last year and he ranked fourth on the team with 28 goals. His 44 assists led the squad. "Sean is an impact player who is going to have to step up and play like a veteran," said McBride. "He is going to have to be really good defensively and make smart decisions." Juniors R.J. Moore and Ra mir Babic along with sophomore Tommy Stupp will also see increased roles in 2015 a er being secondary focuses last year. Moore has played in 50 games (32 starts) over the last two seasons and has ne ed 27 goals and dished out 16 assists. "R.J. is big. He has packed on some muscle," noted McBride. "He is mo vated and has learned a lot. It took him a couple years to grow into the center defender posi on, but we now expect him to be the anchor of our defense." Babic is a veteran of 48 games (23 starts) and has totaled 32 goals and 17 assists in his first two campaigns. "Ra mir is a very important tool who has matured a lot with his game," praised McBride. "It took him a li le while to get used to our philosophies, but he has really bought in. He is a great shooter from the outside and a fast swimmer." Stupp, whose older brother Johnny played at Bucknell from 2006-09, was a key reserve last year, but will challenge for a star ng posi on this year. He totaled four goals and two assists in 24 ou ngs last fall. "Tommy is a smart player who is really fast," commented McBride. "He trained in Serbia all summer, which shows his commitment to the sport of water polo and to our team. He played some important minutes last year and is going to get a lot more this season." With the gradua on of two-year starter Keegan Williams, there will be a new face in goal this season. Junior Patrick McKenzie and sophomore Charlie Niehaus enter preseason prac ce ba ling for the posi on. McKenzie has played in seven games over the last two seasons and has a .528 save percentage. Niehaus started in two of his three appearances last year and posted 14 saves against just 10 goals allowed. Junior Ma Bresnahan saw ac on in 21 games last year and the team's lone le y will try to increase his playing me this season, as will sophomore Jordan White, who appeared in 12 contests as a rookie. McBride expects the freshman class to be key contributors this year. There are four newcomers — Borna Bolanca, Johnathan Coleman, Marko Djordjevic and Danny Farmer — and all four have a chance at pushing the veterans and breaking into the lineup. While some new faces will be in the pool this year, McBride does not expect to change much else up this season. "We will not do anything different. We don't need to change," said McBride when asked about some differences Bison fans might see this fall. "We just need to get be er at the fundamentals. Our offensive and defensive philosophies do not change."

DICK RUSSELL - CWPA HALL OF FAME The Collegiate Water Polo Associa on announced that former Bucknell men’s water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery Rock, would compose the ini al class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002. Both Russell and Hunkler laid the founda on for the organiza on that exists today and were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years. Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical educa on and developed a local swim class program. It was there he founded a water polo club in 1968, which con nued un l 1977, when the team achieved varsity status. CWPA INFORMATION The Collegiate Th Collllegiat i te Water W t Polo P lo Associa Pol Asso A cia i on originally origi i inalllly began began as the the Mid Mid Atlan Atlan c C Conference, onfference founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organiza on relied on volunteer coaches un l 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officia ng assignments at the me were performed by an independent organiza on called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Associa on. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlan c. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that me. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organiza on experienced a strike by its officia ng corps. This strike ul mately resulted in the organiza on establishing its own officia ng bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officia ng assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officia ng Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states na onwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity compe on and club compe on, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it con nues to grow.
