Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur. Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands. Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of seven Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern and 2014 CWPA Women’s Water Polo Championships and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took place inside the gorgeous facility.

What it Means to
BE A BISON “... THE PURSUIT OF ATHLETICS IN COLLEGE NEED NOT INTERFERE WITH A FELLOW’S STUDIES, AND IF YOU GIVE A BOY A WELL-DEVELOPED BODY HIS BRAIN WILL GET THE BENEFIT OF IT.” — CHRISTY MATHEWSON, IN HIS BOOK WON IN THE NINTH, WRITTEN IN 1910
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a wellrounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. 1 | www.BucknellBison.com

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

2016 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo Season Preview The women’s water polo team has improved its overall record each season since 2013, and the squad will be looking to do the same again this year. After finishing 14-14 overall and 3-6 in the strong CWPA last season, the Bison will need to maintain focus to excel in what will be a competitive 2016 campaign. Bucknell had three 40-goal scorers a season ago, two of whom are returning to the team. The team won seven of its final 11 games, giving it momentum heading into 2016 as well. This year, with five returning starters, the opportunity to make a jump in the CWPA is there, and it all starts with the expertise of this year’s captains. Seniors Hannah Sunday and Eleanor Marrs were selected captains after both players gave excellent performances in 2015. Sunday was named to the CWPA All-Conference First Team for the second consecutive season while playing center, and Marrs led the team with 80 points on 48 goals and 32 assists on attack. The duo have shown leadership skills both in and out of the pool that will help push this team throughout the season, and head coach John McBride has high hopes for them. “I would expect Eleanor to be a shutdown perimeter defender and to score a lot from that lefty side of the pool,” said McBride. “For Hannah, she will dominate at the center like she has. She’s one of the most dominant women centers that I’ve ever coached. Because of that she’s going to have a great year like last year.” “[Sunday and Marrs] have really done a great job as leaders and bringing this team close together. This team is really tight. There’s no complaining about being sore or tired. We don’t allow people to be tired, and our captains keep that in check. From a work ethic viewpoint, they’re the hardest workers in the pool. They’re silent leaders.” The philosophy of McBride, who is in his fifth season with Bucknell, starts with the senior class and flows to the rest of the team. The seniors are the first class that McBride has recruited and coached for each of their four years, and the effects of his tutelage are coming to the forefront. “They’re the first consistent group I’ve coached for four years. They know what to expect. Because they know what to expect, what we work on, and what our philosophies are, when the new women come in, it’s ‘this is the way things are done’. It’s really nice that they’ve fallen right in line and became good leaders to the younger kids,” mentioned McBride, who also coaches the men’s water polo team. The other two seniors on this team, Katherine DeRuff and Martine McCarthy, will both see considerable playing time. The two seniors combined to play in 48 games last year en route to 25 points, and both
will look to improve MARTINE MCCARTHY upon those numbers this year. “Kat is a smart player. She makes good decisions and is impactful with that decision making. She knows where she needs to be and what’s going on. Martine is a very smart player, she’s strong, and she can defend. She is like a utility-type player where she can do a little bit of everything. She’s reached a point where it’s all coming together for her. They’re both going to be making big impacts and playing a lot,” praised McBride. Although McBride has gotten accustomed to the older members of this team, overall it is a young group, with 12 of the 19 players being freshmen or sophomores. That doesn’t worry McBride at all, as he is confident that this freshman class is going to contribute to the team right away. “The freshman class is good. They’re all really skilled, and the older women are doing a good job of bringing them up, and catching them up to speed with what’s going on. We brought in some good players and I think it’ll be fine. I don’t really think there’s a difference between young and old on this team. It just makes everything so much better. This year we have that extra rest for the older players and added weaponry,” mentioned McBride, who has tallied 131 career wins at Bucknell on both the men’s and women’s teams. Among that freshman class is Emily Konishi, who is expected to start at the attack position. Coming out of Foothill High School in Santa Ana, California, Konishi was a Third Team All-American in 2014 and a member of the 2013 U.S. Women’s National Cadet Team. “Emily Konishi, keep an eye on her. She’s probably one of the better players on the East Coast this year. She’s going to be exciting. She has come right in, and she’s fit right in to the Division I model,” noted McBride. From Piedmont, California, Sarah Mooney is going to be seeing playing time as a defender at center. Mooney’s toughness in that role

2016 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo Season Preview will be necessary to help her succeed off the bench. Also, Eliza Romeyn, Chelsea Scuderi and Regina Younger will all be valuable role players on attack. There is plenty of depth on this year’s squad, something the program has not had in a few years. It helps create competition between the players and motivation throughout the season, and McBride is excited by the opportunities it will bring his team “We have a more dynamic team this year. We can really dive into the extra players that we have. Everyone is going to have a role, and everyone’s role is going to be huge this year. We have more of a complete team. The younger group has good players; they’re fast, they’re strong, they’re tough,” said McBride. In addition to Sunday, Marrs and Konishi in the starting lineup, sophomore Kendyl Johnson and junior Tegan Stanbach will return as starters. Having more experience is an added plus for McBride, as Stanbach and Johnson tallied 16 goals each in 55 combined starts last season. “Tegan is going to play a huge role. I expect so much out of her, and she knows it. She needs to be a shutdown center defender and shoot the ball well from the outside while making good decisions. Kendyl is a big threat on 6-on-5. Defensively, she’s a very good perimeter defender, and she’ll get a lot of steals. I’m expecting a lot out of them,” mentioned McBride. Likely to fill the final starting spot is Colleen Barron, who played 28 games off the bench as a freshman last year. McBride has seen the improvement Barron has made over the course of a year. Her speed and presence on the counter-attack will open her up for many goalscoring opportunities. Some other key players that will be coming off the bench include sophomore Marta Considine, who will have plenty of offensive opportunities on the outside, sophomore Shyla Lintz, who will backup Sunday at the center position, and junior Julia Ulrich, who played in eight games last season. It is a competitive atmosphere on the team, which opens up the opportunity for any member to play a prominent role. “They’re pretty competitive with each other. They push each other as a team. They look at each other like a family, and they don’t want each other to fail,” said McBride. Goalies Haley Derrod and Manuela Herrera will both see playing time throughout the season after splitting time a year ago. Derrod made 93 saves in 15 starts with a .445 save percentage, while Herrera posted 93 saves in 13 starts and 488 minutes. McBride knows what the strengths are of this squad, and he
hopes to exploit those strengths from start to TEGAN STANBACH finish. It will be a competitive campaign, and the players will need to stay consistent to improve upon last year. “The ability to make quick decisions offensively and not panic [is one of our strengths]. Defensively, being tough and playing good team defense is important. We’ve brought in some really good shooters, and so our ability to shoot from the outside has gone up tremendously,” expressed McBride. Bucknell opens up the season with a difficult schedule that will prepare it for conference play. The Bison will open up with five consecutive invitationals, which are followed by three non-league games before opening conference competition. “The schedule is super tough. The schedule actually mimics my first year here when I dragged the women through the toughest schedule that they’ve ever seen. And I do that because I think we have a team that can handle it. Playing only five homes games is a challenge, and of course there’s nothing better than playing at home, but we’ll be travelling a lot,” said McBride. Still, McBride is confident in the outlook for this year’s team despite strong competition, and every member of the team looks to be ready to take the next step. “Everybody has come back in really good shape and is motivated and ready to go. We are way beyond where we started last year,” noted McBride.

2016 Bucknell Women’s Water Polo Coaching Staff
JOHN MCBRIDE HEAD COACH • FIFTH SEASON • RHODE ISLAND ’92 John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the previous seven years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. National Team, serving as head coach of the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009. Four-and-one-half years into his Bucknell tenure, McBride has guided the Bison programs for nine seasons and been a part of 131 victories. He has led the men’s team to five consecutive above-.500 records, a 2012 Southern Championships title and the program’s first Eastern Championship title game appearance in nearly 20 years. The men have finished above .500 nine times in the last 10 years and had a string of 11 consecutive top-five finishes at Easterns. The women’s squad has collected 50 victories the last four springs while playing extremely challenging schedules that have featured 41 ranked foes. Last year, McBride led the women to their first .500 record since 2010 as the squad saw its win total rise for the second consecutive year. While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. The men’s squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division title, its first conference crown in nearly 25 years. Additionally, the team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and finished as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship. On the women’s side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Championship titles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Championship, the best showing at Brown since 2001. Both the men’s and women’s squads appeared regularly in the national top-20 rankings during McBride’s tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Division selections and 22 All-East players. Additionally, three Bears earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Brown’s men’s team had the highest team grade-point average in the nation for four years, while the women ranked in the top three nationally four times. A goalie on the U.S. National “B” Team in 1993, McBride is a recognizable face in National Team circles. In addition to his duties as the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he has served as head coach of the Southeast Zone Olympic Development Program. McBride has also spent time as an evaluator and coach at the women’s Speedo Top 40 Camp at Harvard. Among his many responsibilities with the National Teams, McBride evaluates and coaches the top 16 men from the East Coast to compete for spots on the U.S. National Team. He has also coached regional teams comprised of the best Northern California collegiate players and helps the U.S. Junior National Team Coaches bring the best players to represent the U.S. in international competitions. An accomplished goalie during his playing days at Rhode Island, McBride was a threetime First Team All-New England selection and was twice a First Team All-East honoree. Following his graduation from Rhode Island with a degree in speech communications, McBride attended the Rhode Island Department of Corrections Academy and the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility Corrections Academy and eventually graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in 1996. He then served as a patrolman and SWAT officer for the North Providence Police from 1996 to 2004. McBride got his start in coaching in 2001 when he founded the Newport Lady Tritons Water Polo Club. He proceeded to coach the club, which was made up of high schoolaged players, until 2003. At that time, McBride founded the Ocean State Masters Swim Team, which featured more than 100 athletes who competed in master’s swim meets and triathlons all over the world. McBride’s most recent start-up project was the Bruno Water Polo Club, which he began as a non-profit organization in Providence, R.I., in 2007. The club gives inner-city youth an opportunity to enjoy the sport of water polo. McBride and his wife, Sam, have two daughters, Grace (15) and Lily (13).

HALL OF FAME
LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
The women’s water polo program had its first inductee into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2014. Former head coach Lynn Kachmarik was part of the seven-person class that was honored on Homecoming Weekend.
As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first four years. Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the women’s water polo team in 2015-16 are Martine McCarthy and Tegan Stanbach. Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include: • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime
Lynn Kachmarik was a true coaching pioneer at Bucknell, mentoring both men and women student-athletes in four different sports from 1982-98. Kachmarik was a world-class water polo player when she came to Bucknell in 1982 as a lecturer in physical education as well as head women’s swimming and diving coach. She is the longest-tenured and winningest coach in the history of that program, compiling a 120-52-1 dual-meet record in 16 years. She led the Bison to the 1987 East Coast Conference team championship and coached 43 individuals and 17 relays to league titles. In 1994, Kachmarik succeeded the legendary Dick Russell as head coach of the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving program, and she led the men to a 31-9 dual-meet record and six individual Patriot League gold medals from 1994-98. In 1984, Kachmarik was appointed assistant coach of the Bison men’s water polo team, and following her first year the team picked her as the recipient of the Scott Schulte Award, presented to the “individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo.” While still serving as women’s swimming coach, Kachmarik was named head coach of the men’s water polo team in 1987, making her the first woman to coach a men’s water polo team in NCAA history. She was named Eastern Coach of theYear in 1987, helped lead the 1988 team to a No. 17 national ranking and posted a four-year record of 56-46. During that time Kachmarik was an avid proponent and advocate for women’s water polo, and during the 1998-99 academic year she helped that sport achieve varsity status at Bucknell for the first time. She was named that program’s very first head coach while relinquishing her swimming coaching duties after 16 years. As a water polo player, Kachmarik captained the U.S. National Team for six years and was a team member for 10. She was also an assistant coach for two additional years. Kachmarik was named to the All-World Team in 1978 and is also a member of the Slippery Rock Athletics Hall of Fame, Collegiate Water Polo Association Hall of Fame and USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

CWPA INFORMATION The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
