NCAA QUALIFIERS FROM THE EIWA CHAMPIONSHIPS

• The EIWA will have 47 automatic qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Championships, ranking second behind the Big Ten (80) and narrowly edging the Big 12 (45). • The EIWA tied the Big Ten in number of automatic qualifiers from the 197-pound weight class. The conference was second to only the Big Ten in automatic qualifiers from the 141-, 157-, 165-, 174-, 184and 285-pound weight classes. • On March 6, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will announce the 47 at-large qualifiers. • At last year’s EIWA Championships, Tyler Smith (141) and Tom Sleigh (197) earned automatic berths. Victor Lopez (157) and Garrett Hoffman (184) were ultimately awarded at-large bids. • Since the Bucknell wrestling program was reinstated ahead of the 2006-07 season thanks in large part to a generous donation from Bill Graham ’62, 17 different wrestlers have combined to earn 38 NCAA berths and four All-America certificates. • Smith has a chance to become the fourth Bison since the program was revived to qualify for the NCAA Championships during all four years of his collegiate career. David Marble (133, 2007-10), Andy Rendos (165, 2007-10) and Joe Stolfi (285, 2013-16) previously accomplished the feat. BUCKNELL AT A GLANCE

• The Bison finished 2017-18 dual competition with a 3-14 (2-7 EIWA) record. They also won the team title at Dec. 29’s Lock Haven Classic and took 13th at Nov. 18’s Navy Classic. • Tyler Smith enters the EIWA Championships with a 24-3 record. His winning percentage of .888 would slot him fifth in the Bucknell annals. Only four Bison have recorded a single-season winning percentage north of .900: Tom Scotton (.966 in 1977-78), Kevin LeValley (.919 in 2010-11), Tom Marchetti (.906 in 1989-90) and Bobby Ferraro (.903 in 1992-93). • Smith, who went a perfect 16-0 in dual action, leads the Bison with his 24 victories. He also owns team-best totals in wins by major decision (9) and technical fall (3). • Drew Phipps ranks second on the team in overall wins (20) and dual wins (11). In EIWA action, he went 7-1, with his only loss coming to then No. 13 Michael Coleman of Navy. • D.J. Hollingshead ranks second to Smith with six victories by major decision. He stands behind only Smith and Phipps in overall wins (17), dual wins (8) and EIWA dual wins (5). • Matthew Kolonia (141/149) leads Bucknell with five pins; he, Mike Macklin, Phipps and Smith are the only Bison who have won by fall, technical fall and major decision during the 2017-18 campaign.

BISON NOTES BUCKNELL’S EIWA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY

• The Bison joined the EIWA in 1999-2000 and have wrestled at the league’s championships 14 times. • Bucknell boasts 10 top-10 finishes and has placed no lower than sixth each of the past three seasons. • The Bison have finished as high as third in the team standings. They tied Penn for that spot in 2009 and claimed sole possession of it in 2015 and 2016. • Bucknell wrestlers have captured an EIWA individual title on three occasions. Andy Rendos won the 165-pound crown in 2010, current assistant coach Kevin LeValley earned the 149-pound title in 2011 and Joe Stolfi was the 285-pound champion in 2014. • Since the wrestling team was reinstated ahead of the 2006-07 campaign, 27 Bison have combined to place on the EIWA podium 55 times.

BISON RANKED

• Tyler Smith checked in at No. 13, 11 and 16 respectively in the final Intermat, The Open Mat and FloWrestling rankings of the regular season. • Smith, D.J. Hollingshead and Drew Phipps appeared in the second NCAA rating percentage index. In addition, Smith and Phipps made the third of four NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings. • In the RPI, Smith, a three-time NCAA qualifier at 141 pounds, was slotted eighth while Phipps was 29th at 184 pounds and Hollingshead was 30th at 165 pounds. Smith was tabbed 11th in the NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings while Phipps checked in at 30th. • In the first NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, Smith was slotted 13th. He moved into a tie for 12th in the second iteration while Phipps entered the rankings for the first time at 32nd. In the first RPI, Smith was ranked ninth, Hollingshead 25th and Phipps 27th.

BISON RIDING WIN STREAKS

• Four wrestlers projected to take the mat at the EIWA Championships are currently riding win streaks: Tyler Smith (+14), Drew Phipps (+5), D.J. Hollingshead (+4) and Seth Hogue (+2).

SMITH COMPLETES UNDEFEATED DUAL SEASON

• Tyler Smith went 16-0 in duals at 141 pounds during the 2017-18 campaign. • Smith became the first Bison to go undefeated in dual competition (minimum five starts) since Andy Rendos accomplished the feat with a 12-0 record at 165 pounds in 2009-10. Rendos went on to win Bucknell’s first EIWA title and place sixth at the NCAA championships. • Smith’s undefeated season was only the 11th put together by a Bison. • Between Rendos and Smith’s perfect campaigns, three Bison had one-loss dual seasons: Kevin LeValley (17-1 at 149 in 2010-11), Tom Sleigh (15-1 at 197 in 2016-17) and Joe Stolfi (18-1 at 285 in 2014-15, 13-1 at 285 in 2015-16). • Smith concluded his collegiate dual career on a 26-bout winning streak. Over the course of his winning streak, which began on Jan. 14, 2017, he racked up bonus points in 18 bouts, winning four by fall, four by technical fall and 10 by major decision.

SMITH BECOMES 10TH BISON WITH 100 CAREER VICTORIES

• On Feb. 4 at American, Tyler Smith edged Jack Mutchnik by a 4-0 decision to become the 10th Bison to reach the 100-victory plateau. • Smith is 102-34 in his collegiate career, giving him a winning percentage of .750 that stands ninth in school history. With four wins at the EIWA Championships, he’ll enter a tie for ninth with Tom Marchetti (1987-91) in career victories. • Before Smith, the most recent Bison to hit the century mark was Victor Lopez. Lopez, a 2017 graduate, is currently slotted in a tie for seventh with 108 career wins.

STARTING LINEUPS

• Twenty two different Bison started in dual competition in 2017-18, five more than a season ago. • Bucknell’s starters included eight freshmen, six sophomores, five juniors and three seniors. • Only Tyler Smith (141) and Drew Phipps (184/197) started all but one dual. Nick Stephani (174) missed just two starts over the course of the campaign. • At least three different starters took the mat at five different weight classes: 125 (3), 149 (3), 157 (3), 197 (4) and 285 (3). • Five returning wrestlers started for the first time in 2017-18: Mike Macklin (125), Christian Bassolino (157), Mitch Hartman (157), Andrew Millsap (157) and Brandon Stokes (285). Of that group, Bassolino and Stokes are projected to compete at the EIWA Championships.

CHALLENGING SCHEDULE

• Four of Bucknell’s 2017-18 opponents were ranked at the time of their meeting: No. 1 Penn State, No. 10 Lehigh, No. 20 Lock Haven and No. 25 Edinboro. • Three of those four teams were ranked in the regular season’s final USA Today/NWCA Poll: No. 1 Penn State, No. 8 Lehigh and No. 23 Lock Haven. In addition, Edinboro and American received votes.
