BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times, most recently in 2013. In the latest report in the fall of 2014, Bucknell ranked No. 2 nationally behind Stanford.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 254 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 258 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 344 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including three in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 99 Patriot League championships in 24 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 125 conference players of the year, 104 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 581 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2014.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 24-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 17 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 126.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 24 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 126 Academic All-Americans in 44 years and 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 24 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

WHAT IT MEANS TO

BE A BISON

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

SEASON PREVIEW

2015 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE

bison looking to work way back to top of patriot league in 2015

SEAN DOYLE IS COMING OFF BACK-TO-BACK 40-POINT SEASONS FOR THE BISON As the 2015 campaign approaches, the Bucknell men’s lacrosse team finds itself in the unusual position of trying to rebound from season considered sub-par by their lofty standards. After nine straight years at .500 or better, the Bison finished 7-8 after dropping a doubleovertime heartbreaker at Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals, but head coach Frank Fedorjaka feels as though his team is poised for a bounce-back year. “We went through a lot of adversity on and off the field last year, and it has made us stronger as a program from top to bottom,” said Fedorjaka, who is entering his 10th year as Bucknell’s head coach. “One of the trademarks of our program has been that we always seem to play well on gameday. Last year we just didn’t play very well for a variety of reasons, but when you come off a tough year like that everyone wants it so much more. I love our chemistry, and we are really excited to start the year.” Tactically, two areas that hurt Bucknell last season were faceoffs and shooting efficiency. Those are typically strengths for Bison teams, but last season they won only 34.2 percent of their faceoffs — the second-worst mark in Division I lacrosse — and they converted on just 22.9 percent of their shot attempts just two years after leading the country in that statistic at 37.1 percent. Fedorjaka is optimistic that a freshman class ranked No. 13 nationally by Inside Lacrosse will help bolster both of those areas. Overall, Bucknell will feature a mixture of veterans and youth at virtually every position on the field. Offensively, the Bison return six of their top seven point-producers from last year, including a pair of all-star midfielders in senior co-captain David Dickson and junior Thomas Flibotte. Dickson was a Third Team All-American after break-

8

ing Bucknell and Patriot League records with 48 assists in 2013. Last year he moved between attack and midfield and produced another strong year with 15 goals and 28 assists en route to Second Team All-Patriot League honors. A seventh-round draft pick of the Denver Outlaws, Dickson is an Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American this spring. Flibotte has been a First Team All-Patriot League pick in each of his first two collegiate seasons, and he already has 48 career goals. A powerful dodger, Flibotte has attempted over 100 shots each year so far. He earned Preseason All-Patriot League honors leading into the 2015 campaign. Dickson and Flibotte will most likely be joined by senior co-captain Ryan Joseph on the first midfield line. Juniors Kyle Shanahan and

Adam Lynne, along with sophomore Tommy O’Connor and freshman Sean O’Brien are leading candidates for the second midfield unit. Joseph scored 10 goals last season, four of them coming against Colgate in the postseason. Shanahan also hit double figures with 11 goals a year ago. Junior Sean Doyle headlines the attack unit. The 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year has already pieced together back-to-back 40-point seasons, and he has at least one point in all 29 career games. Doyle logged 24 goals and 16 assists last season, highlighted by a six-assist, eight-point afternoon in a league win over Holy Cross. Senior Alex Ryan has been a reserve for most of his career, but now the 6’4” crease attackman appears ready to crack the starting lineup. His playing time increased last season, when he made his first two collegiate starts, and he contributed his first four career goals. Newcomer Will Sands, who was ranked No. 49 on Inside Lacrosse’s Top-100 Freshmen list, had an outstanding fall and is the likely third starter at attack. Sophomore Quinn Collison and freshman Connor O’Hara are also in the mix. “We have a lot of weapons on offense,” said Fedorjaka. “Our household names like David Dickson, Sean Doyle and Thomas Flibotte are all playing their best lacrosse, and they are all setting a great example with their work ethic. Then we have some names that might not be as familiar — some upperclassmen and some freshmen — who are ready to step up.” Bucknell has traditionally been a stout defensive team, and that defense often starts with a hard ride from the attack and midfield units. The Bison led the nation last season by forcing turnovers on 24.1 percent of opponents’ clearing attempts. Ultimately they ranked 14th nationally with an 8.61 goals-against average, an impressive figure considering they spent an inordinate amount of time playing defense

PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN DAVID DICKSON thanks to the faceoff issues. Bucknell will have to replace an Honorable Mention All-American at close defense in Jackson Place, who ranked second in the country in caused turnovers last season. But the Bison do return three defensemen with starting experience, led by senior Ben Kellar. Kellar started all 15 games in 2014 and ranked third on the team with 37 ground balls. Sophomore Evan Bernstein began his rookie season as a starter last year before being supplanted by classmate Mike Schiappa midway through the season. Both will play lead roles this season, with another sophomore in Brad Dotson also in the mix. Fedorjaka is also high on freshman Lukas Munoz. League, and he was recognized as a Preseason All-Patriot League pick this year. Spring is a magnet on ground balls, and he led the team with 57 a year ago. Matt Gilray, another Inside Lacrosse Top-100 freshman, will also see plenty of action, and Spring and Gilray should give the Bison a strong presence on faceoff wings. Fedorjaka is very pleased with his depth at short-stick defensive midfield, where he has four high-quality options with varying skill sets. Senior co-captain Mike Ondrusek is the elder statesman of the group, but juniors Eric Monfort, Zach Henkhaus and Brock Ghelfi have also played a lot of lacrosse at Bucknell. Ghelfi, one of the fastest players on the team, will be moving from offensive to defensive midfield after scoring 24 goals over the last two seasons. Sam Grinberg returns for his senior year as Bucknell’s starting goalie. Grinberg won the starting job last season and had a strong year, posting a .563 save percentage and an 8.52 goals-against average. He sat out the fall season while recovering from an injury but is fully fit for the start of the spring. Freshman Brac McKee and senior Frank Morelli are the backups. “We were the No. 1 riding team in the country and one of the best in defensive efficiency, in terms of goals allowed per defensive possession,” noted Fedorjaka. “When our defense is rested and has energy, we are much better at getting stops and then clearing the ball. Last year we just played too much defense, and we got worn down.” Senior Gavin Sullivan is the most experienced of the faceoff specialists in the program, and he had a strong game against Syracuse in a January scrimmage. Junior Colin Farawell also returns for his second year in the program after switching from wrestling to lacrosse. Two promising newcomers — Sam Hahn and Jake Dunlop — looked good in fall ball and hope to help solidify the position.

“Nick Marks has worked very hard with our faceoff unit,” said Fedorjaka. “The additions of Hahn and Dunlop at the X and Gilray on the wing are huge, and Gavin Sullivan is a senior with a lot of experience who just needs to translate his success in practice into the games. The rule changes this year, where players are no longer allowed to carry the ball on the back of their sticks, could also be a big factor.” Bucknell was picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll, behind Loyola, Army and Lehigh and just ahead of Colgate. For the first time in a number of years, the Bison are not ranked in the preseason top 20, but Fedorjaka is not concerned with predictions. “To be honest, it’s actually been nice this preseason not to have to worry about wearing a bulls-eye on our back and trying to defend somebody else’s expectations,” said Fedorjaka. “We are just going about our business and working extremely hard to get back to where we want to be.” After taking on Hobart and Syracuse in preseason scrimmages, the Bison open the season at Delaware on Feb. 7 before hosting Bryant on Feb. 14. Then Patriot League play comes up quickly, with Navy, Colgate and Lehigh looming on consecutive Saturdays in late February and early March. The Bison will also have non-league games against Fairfield at home and Brown and Mount St. Mary’s on the road. Three of the top five projected teams in the Patriot League — Colgate, Army and Loyola — will have to come to Lewisburg this season. The Patriot League Tournament begins with the quarterfinal round at home sites on Apr. 21, and then the No. 1 seed will host the semifinals and championship on Apr. 24 and 26.

COACHING STAFF

2015 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE FRANK FEDORJAKA HEAD COACH 10th SEASON 126-82 overall, 87-51 at BU

After two stints as an assistant coach at Bucknell spanning nearly a decade, Frank Fedorjaka took over as head coach in 2006 when he succeeded longtime mentor Sid Jamieson. In 2011 Fedorjaka guided the team to its first Patriot League Tournament title and second NCAA Tournament appearance, and he has cemented Bucknell’s status as an annual Patriot League title contender and national top 20 program. Fedorjaka became only the second head coach in Bucknell lacrosse history, following in the footsteps of Jamieson, the Bucknell Hall of Famer who founded the varsity lacrosse program in 1968. In his nine seasons since taking over for Jamieson, Fedorjaka has fashioned a stellar 87-51 (.630) record, including a 37-19 (.661) Patriot League ledger. That makes him one of the top-10 most successful active coaches in Division I lacrosse. The Bison have won 10 or more games in four of his nine seasons, including a program record 14 in 2011 and 12 in 2013. Including a five-year stint as head coach at Franklin & Marshall from 1994-98, Fedorjaka has a 126-82 (.606) lifetime record. In 2013, Fedorjaka’s squad achieved a No. 6 national ranking, the highest in program history, buoyed by a 9-8 upset of No. 2 Cornell in Ithaca in March. The team finished 12-4 and advanced to the Patriot League championship game before just missing an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament despite a final RPI ranking of 12. In his first season at the helm, Fedorjaka led the Bison to a historic victory over No. 1 Maryland -- the program’s first-ever victory over a top-ranked team -- and another top-20 road win at Penn State later in the season. The victories really began to start pouring in during year No. 2, as the Bison went 11-4, including three top-20 wins, and came within one of the school record for wins in a season. Another 10-win season followed in 2008, and the Bison advanced all the way to the Patriot League championship game for the first time. In 2009 Fedorjaka was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Bison to a perfect 6-0 conference record and the Patriot League regular-season title. His team made it to the championship game for the second year in a row, this time dropping a one-goal heartbreaker to Navy. In 2010, the Bison took second-ranked and eventual national champion Duke to overtime, and they again qualified for the postseason. Bucknell finished 8-6, with the six losses coming by a combined seven goals. And then in 2011 the Bison finished 14-3, setting a new school record for wins in a season. They went 6-0 in the Patriot League for the second

time in three years and routed Lehigh and Colgate in the PL Tournament before entering the NCAA Tournament with a No. 7 national ranking, the highest in program history at the time. Bucknell nearly upset eventual national champion Virginia in the first round, leading for most of the game before falling 13-12 in overtime. Fedorjaka was rewarded with his second Patriot League Coach of the Year award. Known throughout his career as one of the college game’s best defensive minds, Fedorjaka’s teams annually rank among the national leaders in scoring defense, man-down defense and riding efficiency. Bucknell ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense in 2007, and the Bison have ranked 11th or better five times in the last eight years. In his first eight years as head coach Fedorjaka has mentored 43 AllPatriot League players and eight All-Americans, including three-time AllAmerican Austin Winter. He has also coached four Patriot League Rookie of the Year selections, one Defensive Player of the Year and one Goalie of the Year. That goalie, Nick Sciubba, led the nation in save percentage and goals-against average in 2007. Four of Fedorjaka’s student-athletes have gone on to play professional lacrosse after graduation. Fedorjaka rejoined the Bucknell lacrosse family after serving as head coach at Franklin & Marshall for five years. Fedorjaka served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the 1992 and 1993 seasons before going to F&M. In Fedorjaka’s five seasons at F&M, the Diplomats compiled a 39-31 record. His 39 wins placed him in second on the school’s all-time lacrosse wins list. In 1995 Fedorjaka was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division III Coach of the Year, after leading the Diplomats to a 12-3 record and an NCAA playoff berth. In addition to his responsibilities as men’s lacrosse coach, Fedorjaka also served as an assistant coach in football and women’s soccer during his tenure at F&M. Also while at F&M Fedorjaka served as the Chair to the Southern ECAC Lacrosse Committee in 1997 and 1998. He served on the USILA National Ranking Committee and NCAA Advisory Committee for Division III lacrosse. A 1989 graduate of Hobart College, Fedorjaka was a starting long-stick midfielder on three NCAA Division III national championship teams. He was also a three-year starter at wide receiver for the Statesman football team, earning All-America honors in 1988. The Rochester, N.Y., native was named Hobart’s Athlete of the Year in 1989. During his career at Hobart, he held all reception records and remained the school’s all-time leading receiver until 2004. Fedorjaka began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for two years at Springfield College (Mass.).

BISON LAX IN THE COMMUNITY

When: June 29-July 1, 2015 Where: On the campus of Bucknell University Cost: $425 for Resident Campers; $350 for Day Campers Camp Director: Frank Fedorjaka Camp Co-Director: Joe Conner Jr. Bucknell University Head Lacrosse Coach Frank Fedorjaka invites you to the 2015 Bison Brawl Team Lacrosse Camp. Thirty top-tier high school and club lacrosse teams will be showcased for college coaches and scouts. Conveniently held on the campus of Bucknell University, the Bison Brawl Team Lacrosse Camp provides the ultimate team competition, multiple synthetic turf fields, illuminated stadium venue, ample parking, dormitory facilities, hotels, hospitality and exposure to the college admissions and athletic recruitment process — not specific to Bucknell University. The camp is held on Bucknell University’s 450-acre campus in the heart of the beautiful Susquehanna River Valley in Lewisburg, Pa. Bucknell’s campus is located adjacent to Rt. 15, just six miles south of I-80 and 55 miles north of Harrisburg, Pa. Campers compete in the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. With its recently-installed FieldTurf, it is one of the finest venues in all of college lacrosse. The camp also utilizes the newly renovated West Fields complex, which also offers a first-class atmosphere for lacrosse at any level. The camp provides state-of-the-art facilities and accommodations for a competitive lacrosse atmosphere. All teams will have a chance to work on team concepts and various aspects of team play as the week progresses. Camp staff and referees help provide the most realistic, game-like experience possible. This is a unique chance to grow and learn as a team while continuing to develop all the important individual skills necessary to play at the college level.

My top priority as a head coach is to be sure that our program has a positive image on campus, in the community and in the lacrosse world. It is important to me that our student-athletes give back to the University, the community, and to the sport they love, and that these three entities are better with Bucknell Lacrosse than without. That said, I am proud to announce this year’s Community Service Plan. Our goal is to contribute 24 hours of community service The U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne per team member. That’s 42 student-athletes Division, Co. A, 506th Regiment x 24 hours each = over 1,000 hours! ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

bucknell bison leadership academy

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first three years, and much more is planned in 2014-15. Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the men’s lacrosse team in 2014-15 are David Dickson and Zach Henkhaus. Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include:
