What it means to
be a bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910
Tommy Caso was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection in 2009.

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a studentathlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS and RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 Academic All-Americans in 40 years and 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Varsity Softball Field; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Brendan Nash
Head Coach Trenton State ’94 • 12th Season NASH’s Coaching Record • Overall: 106-82-28 (.556) • At Bucknell: 106-82-28 (.556) • 2000, 2003 & 2009 Patriot League Coach of the Year • 2003 & 2009 NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year • No. 2 on Bucknell career wins list • Coached Bison to 2006 & 2009 PL titles • Led Bison to second round of NCAA Tournament in 2006 & 2009 • Led team to school records for wins and shutouts in a season • Played in 1991 D-III national title game
After leading the 2009 Bison to perhaps the greatest year in program history, Brendan Nash returns for his 12th season as head coach and 15th season as a member of the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest winning percentage (.556) in program history and is second on the wins list with 106, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in Patriot League play in six of the last seven seasons under his direction, and in two of the last four years the team has captured Patriot League championships and then gone on to win NCAA Tournament first-round games. In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason. Last season, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafayette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship seasons. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25. On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009. During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 record. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pittsburgh on a penalty kick. In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year, marking only the second time a Bucknell men’s soccer mentor garnered the award. Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first AllAmerican in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Two of his players, O’Brien and Michael Lookingland ‘05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell. Two of his last three recruiting classes have been ranked in the top 40 nationally. Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached five Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber,
6
2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hennings in 2008 and Patrick Selwood in 2009. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year since 1997. A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons. While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III national championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsmanship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Longwood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference. Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been instrumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee. Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the College of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997. Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, also coach soccer. Jamie is in his 11th year as the head mentor of the men’s soccer team at Caldwell College, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School in New Jersey.

Assistant Coach Lock Haven ’08 • 1st Season
Strength & Conditioning Coordinator East Stroudsburg ’96 • 9th Season
Patrick Long, a former team captain and allregion selection at Lock Haven, was named an assistant coach with the Bucknell men’s soccer program in March. Long, who most recently had been an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg, joined a Bison program coming off a Patriot League championship season. A native of Lock Haven, Pa., Long graduated from his hometown school with a bachelor of science degree in secondary education and social studies, with a minor in coaching. As a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team from 2003-06, he was a two-time First Team All-PSAC selection and a twotime All-Northeast Region selection, making first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. A two-year team captain, Long won the team’s Player of the Year Award as a junior and Coaches’ Award as a senior, was a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and was a Third Team Academic All-American during his senior campaign. During the 2005 spring semester, he studied at Hope University in Liverpool, England. Long also played on the Lock Haven men’s basketball team in 2006-07. While completing his coursework at Lock Haven, Long served as a student assistant coach with the Eagles in 2007-08. He then moved on to East Stroudsburg as a graduate assistant coach as he completed his master’s degree in sports management with a 4.0 grade-point average in August 2009. Last fall, he remained at ESU as an assistant coach, helping the Warriors to an 11-win season. Long has been very active in the summer camp and club soccer scene as a coach, camp counselor and tournament director. He was an assistant coach with the Central Pennsylvania ODP in 2008, and in 2009 was the player development system director for the Pocono Area Shooting Stars F.C.
The strength and conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first fulltime strength and conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. Volunteer Assistant Coach East Stroudsburg ’83 • 4th Season
Former Bucknell assistant coach and longtime Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete Ellis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his fourth year in that role. After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical education teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Ellis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span. A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lewisburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

Season Outlook
2010 Bucknell Soccer One of the dilemmas facing coaches coming off record-setting, championship seasons is how much to draw upon that success the following year. For Brendan Nash and the Bucknell men’s soccer team this preseason, there has been very little chatter about a 2009 campaign that featured program records for wins and shutouts, Patriot League regular-season and tournament championships, and a first-round NCAA Tournament win over Princeton. Under the leadership of Nash and senior co-captains Ross Liberati and Travis Rand, the Bison are approaching 2010 with the thought that last year’s dream season, while certainly something to be extremely proud of, can’t interfere with the hard work that will be required to repeat that success. “There has been no mention of 2009 at all,” said Nash, the reigning Patriot League Coach of the Year who is entering his 12th season as head coach of the Bison. “The guys came back and said, ‘let’s work hard, find our identity and prepare for the tough games ahead of us.’ We have taken some of the lessons learned in 2009 and applied them to this season. But we know that the bar has been raised, and that we have to re-raise it this season, in terms of the standard of our play, the atmosphere for our home games at Holmes Stadium, and taking the recognition given to the program and translating it into our recruiting.” One remnant of last season that the Bison will have to deal with is the large bulls-eye on their backs set by opponents who walked off on the short end of one of Bucknell’s 17 victories. The very first league game on Sept. 25 will be a rematch of last year’s Patriot League championship match against American, this time in Washington, D.C. In fact, the Bison will have to face each of the other three 2009 Patriot League Tournament participants — American, Lehigh and Lafayette — on the road this season. “We know that we will be facing some teams that might not be real happy with last year’s result and are going to come out flying against us,” said Nash. “We are going to have to be prepared for that and rise to the challenge.” Fortunately, Nash has plenty of talent and experience remaining in the program. Bucknell will need to find replacements for All-America midfielder Conor O’Brien, All-Patriot League center back Patrick Selwood and a “glue” player in all-league midfielder Sean King. Those are not easy pieces to replace, particularly O’Brien, who tallied 11 goals and nine assists and accounted for seven gamewinning goals, many in dramatic fashion. Selwood was more than just a technically sound defender, he was the vocal captain of a defense that produced a school-record 12 shutouts last season. Nash admits that he might not have an individual to step in and replace the production of an O’Brien or a Selwood, but he also says he has a much deeper squad this year and much of that coverage will end up being a group effort. “We always try to look at depth as a strength,” said Nash. “We have players who are good enough and fit enough to play all 90 minutes, but we have no problem going to our bench. This year we have tremendous depth at every position, which is going to make for some tough choices.” Even at the goalkeeper position, where the Bison return a Second Team All-Patriot League choice in junior Tommy Caso, the team has multiple weapons. Junior Marc Hartmann and freshman Orman Kimbrough are both legitimate Division I keepers, giving Nash peace of mind in the event Caso were unavailable. Caso is coming off a tremendous sophomore season, when he broke the program record with 15 wins and tied the school mark with 10 shutouts. He posted an .814 save percentage, and his goals-against average was under 1.00 for most of the year until the 5-0 loss to Virginia in the NCAA Tournament second round bumped it up to 1.03. The lefty already has 33 career starts entering his junior campaign, and he is coming off a terrific postseason in which he posted three straight clean sheets against Lafayette, American and Princeton. “Last year was a breakout year for Tommy, and it has done wonders for his confidence,” said Nash. “We have had a strong tradition of outstanding goaltending at Bucknell, and entering his junior year Tommy is trying to join the company of guys like Joey Kuterbach and Adam
8
Ross Liberati Edwards. Tommy has the ability to be one of those guys. He has done a very good job of maturing and becoming a leader back there.” In front of the goalkeepers is a defensive unit that offers Nash plenty of options, yet remains a bit unsettled heading into the opener. Nash is still tinkering with positions within his back four, only because in his defense-first philosophy he knows just how important finding the right combinations will be to the overall success of the team. “The success of our season will depend on how well our back four gets adjusted,” said Nash. “We are looking for consistency, whose skills best fit each spot, and who will replace the great leadership provided by Pat Selwood.” Senior co-captain Travis Rand, junior Andrew Powell and sophomore Jermaine Jarrett are all returning starters, although Powell and Jarrett have been dealing with some nagging injuries in the preseason. Sophomores Vinny Cinotti and Collin Costello and promising freshmen Mayowa Alli and Joe Meyer are challenging to replace Selwood. Rand earned a starting nod at right back last year and had a solid, consistent season for the Bison. Powell was also a first-year starter, bringing a new dimension of height and athleticism to the back line. The Patriot League decathlon champion last spring, Powell was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in soccer in 2009. Jarrett played in 20 games, starting 17, as a freshman and did very well after being thrust into the limelight right away. The Bison boast two big and potentially dominant players in the heart of their 4-5-1 in senior co-captain Ross Liberati and junior Luke Joyner. Liberati began his career as a fullback, and both he and Joyner could play in the back in a pinch if needed. Both are very dangerous in the air and are threats to score goals in the box, but both are also responsible defenders. Liberati was an NSCAA Third Team All-Region and First Team All-Patriot League selection last year, and he is one of the team’s most vocal leaders. Joyner set career highs for goals (3), assists (6) and points (12) last season. “Replacing both Sean King and Conor O’Brien is going to be a big task, and we’ll have to do it by committee,” Nash observed. “We have eight or nine midfielders that we can go to, and we feel that our midfield can still be a major strength like it has been in the past. The midfield unit must understand the hard work and energy that is required of them. That work rate is going to have to be what identifies this team.” Nash is thrilled to have junior Brendan Klebanoff back in the mix this season. A talented center mid out of the powerful Baltimore Bays club system, Klebanoff suffered an injury during his club team’s run to the U-19 national title in the summer of 2009 and missed all of last season. Sophomore Phil Parsons has improved significantly over the last year, and freshman Josh Butzke is already on the verge of a starting spot somewhere in the middle of the field. Nash is also high on freshman Aidan Hoolachan, a versatile player whom he compares to former Bison Justin Wolf. The probable starters on the flanks will most likely be senior Tommy McCabe on the left and junior Ryan Sappington on the right. McCabe is one of the most experienced players on the team with 56 career appear-
ances. He crosses the ball well, has a big throw-in and also works back well defensively. Sappington started all but one game as a sophomore last season and is a bundle of energy. He had a goal and four assists last season, while McCabe had a goal and three assists. Sophomore CK Kumah was a major contributor as a rookie last season, tallying four goals and three assists. He had game-winning goals in the same week against Holy Cross and Marquette, the latter coming in overtime. Sophomores Charlie Pirc and Ryan Foreman did not see as much game action last season, but both have had strong preseasons. Up top, sophomore Brendan Burgdorf is coming off a monster rookie year and seems poised for even bigger things in 2010. An NSCAA Third Team All-Region selection, Burgdorf ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring behind only teammate O’Brien with nine goals and two assists for 20 points. His goal total ranked No. 9 nationally among freshmen and was the second-highest total ever by a Bucknell freshman. He did it in the clutch, too, scoring in 1-0 wins over American in the Patriot League final and Princeton in the NCAA Tournament. Amazingly, Bucknell has scored a goal in 55 of its last 57 games — its national-best 27-match scoring streak was snapped by Virginia in the NCAAs — and Burgdorf will have to be a major factor if that kind of consistent offensive production is to continue. “Brendan was great last year, but he has come back this season as a more complete player,” said Nash. “He worked extremely hard in the offseason and is a stronger, more mature player. He is a handful to defend.” Perhaps overshadowed by Burgdorf’s breakout rookie season is the fact that classmate Josh Plump was also a major contributor at forward. Plump had a pair of goals, including a critical 81st-minute equalizer at Colgate, and three assists while playing in every game. Plump scored four goals in the team’s Orange-Blue scrimmage the week prior to the start of the season. Junior Nader Sawtarie, who has played primarily in the back over his first two injury-plagued seasons, will likely move up front this year. Sawtarie has a rocket of a shot and outstanding speed when healthy. With Sawtarie and the dynamic sophomore trio of Burgdorf, Plump and Kumah, Nash could go to two forwards for certain stretches to take advantage of that depth. Another advantage the Bison have enjoyed through the years is tremendous home support, particularly since the completion of the beautiful Holmes Stadium facility three years ago. Last season the Bison drew over 1,400 fans for a Fox Soccer Channel-televised game against Lafayette, and the team ranked in the top 40 nationally in total home attendance in 2009. In addition to an attractive season opener against Villanova, Bucknell will also have non-league home games against a UMBC team that was nationally ranked for awhile last year, Drexel, Adelphi and NJIT. Home Patriot League encounters are lined up against Army, Navy and Colgate. In the second week of the season the Bison will travel to nearby State College for the Penn State Classic. Two years ago Bucknell tied No. 10 Ohio State and blanked Penn State 2-0 to win that tournament, and the Bison will be taking on the same two teams again this year. They will also play College of Charleston and Furman at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Tournament in Charleston, S.C., the following week. Bucknell was picked as the overwhelming favorite in the Patriot League preseason poll, receiving the maximum 14 first-place votes, and the team was picked No. 26 in the College Soccer News national preseason poll. Nash is certainly appreciative of those accolades, which validate the strides his program has made during his 11-year tenure, but he realizes that only hard work will get his team back to last year’s lofty perch. “This team has so many personalities, and leadership is coming from many different areas,” Nash said. “Our captains know how the effort that is going to be required to re-raise that bar. Tommy McCabe, our third senior, and Tommy Caso are emerging as leaders with a professional attitude. Guys like Luke Joyner and Ryan Sappington are great teammates. It’s probably not fair to compare this year’s team to last, but if we are willing to put in the work we have a great opportunity in front of us.”

Over the last few years the Bucknell men’s soccer program has been well represented in both international and professional soccer. Bucknell graduate Sunil Gulati ’81 was elected as president of U.S. Soccer in 2006 and has served in that role ever since. Additionally, Michael Lookingland ’05 and Adam Edwards ’06 have played professionally in recent years. Sunil Gulati ’81 Gulati served as Major League Soccer’s Deputy Commissioner from its launch until 1999 and currently teaches in the economics department at Columbia University while also serving as the president of Kraft Soccer Properties. While at Bucknell Gulati was a team manager with the Bison. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bucknell and earned his M.A. and M. Phil. in economics at Columbia. Gulati and his wife, Marcela, have one son, Emilio, and one daughter, Sofia. They live in New York City. Michael Lookingland ’05 Michael Lookingland became the first Bucknell men’s soccer player, and just the sixth from the Patriot League, to be drafted by a Major League Soccer team when he was selected by Real Salt Lake with the 13th overall pick in the 2005 MLS
Supplemental Draft. The 2005 Bucknell graduate, who made his MLS debut later that summer, has played professional indoor soccer with the Baltimore Blast since 2008 and has also seen action with the USL Second Division Harrisburg City Islanders and with Crystal Palace USA. He has won Michael Lookingland two championships with the Blast and one with the City Islanders. In July 2009 he was named to a National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) all-star team that traveled to Bermuda to play the Island Soccer League’s all-stars. Lookingland started all 76 games in his fouryear career at Bucknell. A three-time member of the All-Patriot League squads while a Bison, Lookingland became just the second player to be named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year twice. Conor O’Brien ‘10 After becoming the first Bucknell All-American in 33 years, Conor O’Brien attended the MLS scouting combine and later signed a professional contract with Blokhus FC in Denmark. As of press time, O’Brien had started and played 90 minutes in each of the team’s first four matches. O’Brien was a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, and as a senior he was one of 15 finalists for the Hermann Trophy, awarded to the college player of the year. He graduated ranked in the top 10 on Bucknell’s career goals, points and assists list.

The 2006 season was an up-and-down affair for the Bucknell men’s soccer team. After opening the campaign 0-1-1, the Bison reeled off a program record-tying eight-match undefeated streak that featured seven victories. It appeared as though the young Bucknell team that featured just one senior — Andrew Loia — on its roster would cruise into the Patriot League Tournament for the third time in four years. However, the Bison lost five matches in a difficult six-game stretch to put them on the fence for a potential appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. A postseason berth came down to the final match of the season, an important home contest with Navy. Bucknell needed to win the game and hope that American would lose to Army. The Bison ended up pulling out a 2-0 victory behind goals from Nathan LaGrave and Mark Schmiegel. Following the win, the team gathered in the locker room to anxiously await the result of the Army-American match, which started one hour later. The Black Knights ended up defeating the Eagles 3-2 to clinch the fourth seed in the Patriot League Tournament for Bucknell. The Bison defense was at its best during the Patriot League Tournament, allowing just one goal against the top two teams in the league. Bucknell played No. 1 Lehigh, which was ranked 14th nationally and hosting the fourteam event, to a 1-1 tie. It advanced to the championship match for just the second time in program history by winning 4-1 on penalty kicks. Two days later the Bison claimed their first-ever title by upending Lafayette 4-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 tie. A diving save by Patriot League Tournament MVP Joey Kuterbach on the final penalty kick sealed the victory. Six days later Schmiegel provided the heroics in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at George Mason. He tallied the lone goal of the contest just over five minutes into overtime for Bucknell’s first NCAA victory in 32 years. The Cinderella run came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when the Bison lost 4-0 to No. 4 Virginia, which advanced to the national semifinals.
For the Bison the 2009 season was one of those where just about everything broke right. Boasting a blend of experienced veterans, led by all-star co-captains Conor O’Brien and Patrick Selwood, and youthful exuberance (seven starters were either freshmen or sophomores), Bucknell finished 176-0, won the Patriot League regular-season and tournament titles and defeated Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bison made their living winning close games. Of their school-record 17 wins, 15 came by one goal and 10 were by 1-0 margins. Bucknell also eclipsed the school shutouts record with 12. O’Brien was the primary goalscorer, finishing with 11 goals and nine assists. He constantly came through in the clutch, posting seven game-winning goals. Freshman Brendan Burgdorf chipped in nine goals, and O’Brien and Burgdorf finished 1-2 in the Patriot League in goals. Selwood, along with all-leaguers Ross Liberati and Andrew Powell anchored the stingy defense, with goalie Tommy Caso turning in an outstanding season in goal. Bucknell did not concede a goal in its first three postseason games. After clinching the Patriot League regular-season title and the right to host the tournament, the Bison opened the tourney with a 1-0 overtime victory over Lafayette. Who else but the soon-to-be-named All-American O’Brien tallied the game-winner. In the final against American, Burgdorf scored in the first half and the defense made the goal hold up, giving the Bison their second Patriot League title. Bucknell was considered a good bet to receive a home game for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but instead the Bison were sent to Princeton. Overcoming a driving rain and a half-hour lightning delay, Bucknell parlayed a Burgdorf goal into a 1-0 win over the Tigers. Just like in 2006, Bucknell had to go to national powerhouse Virginia for round two. The Bison had the first good scoring chance in the game, but the second-ranked Cavaliers prevailed 5-0 and went on to win the national championship.
The Bison Celebrate their 2006 PL Title.

Patriot League/Bucknell In its third decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
presidents’ cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 16 times in its 20-year existence, including 12 of the last 13 years. In 2009-10 Bucknell swept the overall, men’s and women’s Cups for the sixth time. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.
2010 Bucknell Soccer the plan for bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,400 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. bucknell athletics mission statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends,

the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

Fox Soccer Channel has visited the Bucknell campus for live national broadcasts twice in the last three years. The 2007 game between Bucknell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest between the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. There were the first national television broadcasts to originate from Bucknell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 last season.
