Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s indoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.

According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 117 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 15 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 19 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 117 Academic All-Americans in 39 years and 114 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 19 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Since Ben Landis took over as head coach of the Bucknell women’s soccer program in 2005, the Bison have enjoyed the most successful four-year span in program history, capturing a Patriot League tournament title in 2005 followed by back-to-back regularseason crowns in 2006 and 2007 and a runner-up finish in 2008. With a record of 45-28-4 at the helm for the Orange and Blue, Landis has helped the Bison surpass the 10-win plateau in each of his first four seasons, marking the first time in program history the squad has posted double-digit wins in at least three consecutive seasons. In his first season back at his alma mater in 2005, Landis guided Bucknell to its second Patriot League championship, one of many successes the Bison achieved under his direction that season. The squad more than doubled scoring production from the year before, and went on to face Penn State in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Bison reached new heights, tying school records for wins, both overall (12) and in league play (6), and breaking the team’s previous marks for best goals-against average (0.99), winning percentage (.735) and winning and unbeaten streaks after posting seven consecutive victories. The Orange and Blue also earned its first Mid-Atlantic regional rankings from both SoccerBuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and posted its first win over a nationally ranked opponent, handing No. 14 Navy, which held a 19-0-0 record at the time, a 2-1 loss in the final game of the regular season to clinch a share of the Patriot League regular season title and earn the right to play host to the league tournament as the No. 1 seed. In 2007, Landis coached Bucknell to a 5-1-1 league mark, earning the squad the right to host the Patriot League Tournament as the regular season champion. The Bison, who finished as the tournament-runners up, posted an 11-8-1 overall mark, including a convincing 4-1 win over traditional Ivy League power Princeton. Last season, Bucknell won 11 more matches and went 5-2 in league play. Landis’ squad broke the school record with eight shutouts and posted a big 3-2 road win over Maryland. He also coached Jennifer Dervarics to her second straight Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honor. Laura Kane, a former All-American and team captain at West Virginia University, joined coach Ben Landis’ staff during the offseason. Kane, who played professional soccer in Sweden in 2008, recently spent two years as an assistant coach at Purdue, helping the Boilermakers to a pair of Big Ten titles. Kane graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia in 2005 with a degree in physical education, and she received a master’s in athletic coaching education from WVU in 2006. During her playing days with the Mountaineers, she was named an NSCAA Third Team All-American as a senior in 2004, and she was a two-time NSCAA Scholar All-American. Kane, who made 93 career starts, including nine in NCAA Tournament play, was named the team’s Most Outstanding Player in 2004. She logged 31 goals and 23 assists for 85 career points, ranking third on the school’s all-time list in each category. A native of Pottstown, Pa., Kane served as a graduate volunteer coach at WVU while pursuing her master’s degree, and she was the head coach of the West Virginia United Soccer Club from 2004-06. In July 2006 she was hired as an assistant at Purdue, where she helped the women’s soccer team post a 348-6 record and earn back-to-back Big Ten Tournament titles. While at Purdue, Kane coached the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, in addition to eight all-conference student-athletes. She was also given responsibilities as the program’s recruiting and travel coordinator. In 2008, Kane played professionally with Pitea IF in the Swedish First Division and also with FC Indiana in West Lafayette, Ind. In March 2009 she became a regional manager with the Sky Blue Soccer School.

Jenny Ormsby begins her fourth season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Bison after joining the staff at the start of the 2006 campaign. Ormsby earned bachelor of arts degrees in psychology and sociology from North Carolina State University in 2003 where she was a four-year letterwinner for the Wolfpack. A 2002 Verizon Academic All-District second team selection, Ormsby was an ACC honor roll member and was recognized as one of the top-10 student-athletes at NC State in 2003. Prior to joining the Bison staff, Ormsby served as head coach of the Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association U-12 girls team in Hickory, N.C., from 2005 to 2006. She also spent a season as an assistant coach for Alexander Central High School in Taylorsville, N.C., was a volunteer assistant at Watauga High School in Boone, N.C., and served as an assistant coach for Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C., in addition to working various camps. Ormsby, who earned a master of arts in school psychology at Appalachian State University, is the wife of Bison men’s soccer assistant coach, Cam Ormsby, and currently works as a school psychologist in the Selinsgrove Area School District and for the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit.

Graduate Assistant Coach Bucknell ’07 • Second Season

Katie Dry, a 2007 Bucknell graduate and three-year starting goalkeeper for the Bison women’s soccer team, returns for her second year as a graduate assistant coach this fall. Dry finished her stellar playing career with 30 wins, matching the highest total by any netminder in program history, helping the Bison to a Patriot League tournament championship in 2005 and a regular-season title in 2006. In addition to holding a share of the career wins record at the end of her fouryear playing career with the Orange and Blue, Dry set a program record for career goals-against average, 1.46. Dry is also among the career leaders for shutouts as she finished with nine, the third-highest total in program history. Dry enjoyed her finest season in net as a senior in 2006 when she started all 18 games and broke the program’s single-season goals-against average record with a 0.90 GAA, which also tied for ninth on the Patriot League’s single-season list. A four-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a biology major, Dry was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team in 2006, becoming the first goalkeeper in program history to do so.

Season Outlook

2009 Bucknell Soccer In four years under head coach Ben Landis, the Bucknell women’s soccer program has established itself as an annual contender for the Patriot League championship and regional rankings consideration. The Bison captured the Patriot League Tournament title and went to the NCAA Tournament in Landis’ first year in 2005, they earned regular-season crowns in both 2006 and 2007, and last season Bucknell finished second in the league standings and lost a heartbreaker to Army in penalty kicks in the tournament semifinals. While the league competition is strong, playing in the Patriot League Tournament serves as a minimum goal for the Bison, who enter the 2009 campaign with higher aspirations after graduating only three players from last year’s side that produced double-digits wins for the fourth straight season. “We are confident that we are one of the top programs in our league in terms of what we do, how we prepare ourselves every day, and how we carry ourselves on the field and in the classroom,” said Landis. “Only one outcome would be truly satisfying, and that is to raise the trophy. Last year’s tournament experience against Army, as hard as that was to take, I think helped our younger players understand what it takes to win.” While the Bison lost only three seniors from a year ago, all were key cogs. Jennifer Dervarics was the league’s premier sniper. She led the conference in scoring two years in a row and was the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in both 2007 and 2008. An all-region selection as well, Dervarics graduated ranked third on Bucknell’s all-time lists for career goals (36), assists (19) and points (91). Nicole Marotta was a four-year starter, playing her first three seasons in the back before moving up to center midfield as a senior. A three-time First Team All-Patriot Leaguer, Marotta was a defensive anchor for the Bison and was also one of the league’s best in the air. Also gone is Kelly Boswell, a “glue” type player who was the team’s first reserve last season. Those three combined for 17 of Bucknell’s 36 goals a year ago. Even though each of those losses will be difficult to replace, Landis welcomes back plenty of talent and hopes that three key players who were slowed by injury last season – Molly Linhart, Chelsea Brinkman and Megan DeGennaro – return to their proper fitness levels. Offensively, Bucknell has had terrific success “passing the torch” from one prolific scorer to the next. Four different Bison forwards have earned First Team All-Patriot League honors in each of Landis’ four seasons. Jennifer Margolis earned the distinction in 2005, then she gave way to Krista Lee Gentile a year later. Gentile’s graduation opened the door for Dervarics to stake her claim as the league’s top scorer, and now it is junior Christa Matlack’s turn. Matlack earned her first allleague citation last season as a sophomore, producing eight goals and four assists despite missing the first three games of the season with an injury. A tall, athletic player with explosive speed, Matlack also showed signs of becoming a clutch scorer in big moments, something a team with championship aspirations requires. She tallied four game-winning goals last season, including one against Temple with 29 seconds to play and another against Marist a week later in the 83rd minute. “We have been fortunate to have some great offensive players here in recent years, but we do not revolve our program around the star scorers,” Landis offered. “We play a system that we feel will make us successful, and players such as Krista Lee and J.D. (Dervarics) and now Christa have all been able to thrive in that system thanks to their hard work.”

Despite Matlack’s impressive credentials, Landis feels that entering the season the team is probably thinnest depth-wise at forward. This spring, she was primarily paired up front with DeGennaro, the rising sophomore who was limited by injury last season, and junior Kelliann Doherty, a smart player who has been playing center midfield at Bucknell after being a forward throughout most of her prep career. Doherty had six goals and three assists for 15 points en route to All-Patriot League honors as a freshman, and last season she added four more goals, all of them coming against league foes. A native Californian, DeGennaro appeared in 12 games as a reserve in 2008, scoring her first career goal late in the year against Lafayette. The Bison also return both of their starting outside midfielders in senior Chelsea McGorry and junior Brooke Stokes. McGorry has an excellent cross, leading to eight career assists, while Stokes has shown a knack for creating scoring chances and after two seasons worth of significant playing time is looking to become a consistent finisher this fall. Linhart combined for six goals and five assists in her first two collegiate campaigns, with one of those goals coming in overtime in a Patriot League Tournament win over Army in 2007. Last season she sat out the first nine matches of the year with a leg injury, and even when she was cleared to return she struggled to become the consistently dangerous threat she was in previous years. A team co-captain, Linhart spent the spring traveling abroad in the Semester at Sea program, and Landis feels she will be rested and ready to go in 2009. Brinkman is responding well to offseason knee surgery, and Landis hopes that she, too, will be back in the mix in the middle of the field this fall. Her knee woes limited her impact last year, but when healthy she has one of the strongest legs on the team. A twotime ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District pick, Brinkman has a lethal free kick and is a threat to score from long range. Once again this season Bucknell should be very strong in the back, with First Team All-Patriot League pick Caitlin Holtz joining stalwart co-captains Amanda Citron and Lauren Stoller, two-year starting back Kelsey Johnson, and one of the conference’s premier goalkeepers in senior Kathryn Sutton. That core group combined to post a school-record eight shutouts last season, and Sutton has now presided over 12 career clean sheets, one shy of the program record. Sutton has been the everyday starting keeper for the last two seasons and is expected to retain that mantle again in 2009. Last year’s 11 wins, 1.06 goalsagainst average and .798 save percentage were all personal bests. Holtz, a rising junior, is so much more than just a solid backliner. Perhaps the most technical player on the team according to Landis, she is adept at carrying the ball out of trouble and is a strong enough playmaker that she is often given the liberty to move forward. She handles all of the team’s corner kicks and most of the long free kicks, and the Bison’s strength on those set pieces allowed Holtz to lead the Patriot League with eight assists, which tied

Caitlin Holtz for the second-most in a season at Bucknell. Citron is another member of the junior class coming off a wonderful 2008 campaign. She started all 20 games last season and 17 of 20 as a freshman in 2007, and Landis feels that Citron has really come into her own as a defender. In last season’s Patriot League Tournament contest against Army – a match that was scoreless for 110 minutes – she was one of the best players on the field for either side. She repeated that performance in a spring game against Penn State, and Landis feels she is poised for a big season in 2009. Stoller has been a rock for the Bison for three years, starting all 58 games over that span. An AllPatriot Leaguer in 2006 and 2007 and a two-time Academic All-District pick, Stoller is the linchpin of Bucknell’s back line. One of Landis’ first key recruits as Bucknell’s head coach, Stoller came in with impressive PDA credentials and has not disappointed. Also keep an eye on sophomore Casey Crowley, who saw the most field time among Bucknell’s rookie crop last year. Crowley played both defense and outside midfield, even starting six games, and she produced three assists. Others who are battling for more playing time in 2009 include junior midfielder Rosemary Walker, who appeared in 17 games last season; junior midfielder Julianne Harris, who is coming off an excellent spring season; sophomore midfielder Sadie Canter, who played in 12 games and had one assist; sophomore Jane Voris, who can play midfield or back; senior midfielder/defender Erin Lavery, a veteran player with a contagious attitude; and sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Garrehy, who provides stable support for Sutton. Five of the team’s six rising seniors studied abroad in the spring, and Landis felt that the spring training season proved to be a boon to a big and talented junior class. “Our seniors are really close, and they provide leadership from within,” said Landis. “But the junior class has followed their lead and become super tight. This is a very good class, and they had a great spring, really taking over with so many seniors abroad.” Landis is also very high on his freshman class, which features a promising goalkeeper in Sandita McDermott along with field players Taryn Boucher, Corinne Collins, Meghan Fitzpatrick, Emily Trosch, Jenna Tryon and Kayla Yee. Landis has once again built a challenging schedule, featuring many top Eastern programs. A year ago the Bison knocked off Maryland in College Park and played Penn State tough on the road. The Nittany Lions are back on the schedule in 2009, this time on Bucknell’s home turf at Emmitt Field on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The slate begins Aug. 28-30 at the James Madison Tournament, with matchups against Towson and the host Dukes. The Patriot League schedule will be challenging, with three straight road matches at Army, Holy Cross and Colgate to end the regular season. The Bucknell-Navy contest, always one to circle on the calendar, will be played in Lewisburg on Saturday, Oct. 17, and that will be Bucknell’s Senior Day.

Patriot League Tournament Championships 2001 Champions

2005 Champions

The 2001 Bucknell women’s soccer team defeated American and Navy on its way to winning the Patriot League Championship and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The third-seeded Bison downed the top-seeded Mids 2-1 in overtime to claim its first-ever Patriot League title. Lauren Schwarz scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick 3:07 into overtime. Bucknell fell to seventh-ranked Penn State 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bison finished the season with a 12-7-0 record and were led in scoring by Savannah Rennels, who tallied 12 goals and one assist. She and Lindsay Slomer were named to the All-Patriot League First Team. Tara Utchel landed a spot on the all-league second team, while freshman Ashley Dincher garnered Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year honors. Chrissy Findlay was named Coach of the Year.

In 2005, the Bucknell women’s soccer team upset Lehigh and Army to become the first No. 4 seed in Patriot League history to win the postseason tournament. The Bison downed the Black Knights by a 3-1 margin in the championship game after advancing past No. 1 seed Lehigh in the semifinal round with a thrilling 6-5 decision in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw with the Mountain Hawks. Shannon Curd was named Patriot League Tournament MVP . Bucknell faced Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and fell by the score of 6-0. The Bison ended 2005 with a record of 11-9-1, 4-3-0 in the Patriot League. Jennifer Margolis led the team in scoring with 13 goals and three assists for 29 points. Margolis represented the Orange and Blue on the All-Patriot League First Team while Krista Lee Gentile was named to the all-league second team.

where are they now? Listed below is a sampling of Bison women’s soccer alumni and their current professional and educational endeavors.

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2008, 93 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 897 graduates in that class, 868 (97 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 62 percent were employed, 21 percent were enrolled in graduate school, three percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and seven percent were still seeking employment. Of those attending graduate school, 22 percent are pursuing degrees in social sciences and the humanities, 16 percent are in medical school, 16 percent are studying science, 12 percent are in law school and 12 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in engineering. The mean salary for the 2008 graduates responding to the survey was $47,865 and was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in engineering was $55,157, and the mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration was $53,945. Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $41,506. Most 2008 graduates (79 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (26 percent), New Jersey (16 percent) and NewYork City (15 percent) leading the way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as Accenture, AmeriCorps, Deloitte, Ernst &Young, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, KPMG, Merck & Company, Inc., Peace Corps, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Teach for America, Turner Construction, UBS and U.S. Army. A total of 48 percent of the class respondents secured employment through Bucknell on-campus interviews, Career Development Center leads, networking or offers from former employees.

The Plan for Bucknell

LISA GIBBONS ’95 was Bucknell’s first true superstar in the sport of women’s soccer, and she holds school and Patriot League scoring records that may never be broken. Women’s soccer became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1990, and in the program’s second year Gibbons came along and instantly helped the team to a seven-win season and credibility in Eastern soccer circles. She finished her career with a whopping 66 goals, 35 assists and 167 points. No other Bison player has scored more than 100 points or 39 goals since then. Gibbons scored 20 goals in 1993, then as a senior in 1994 she logged 19 goals and 19 assists for 57 points, the third-highest total in the nation that year. Gibbons was a First Team All-Patriot League selection three times, was the league’s rookie of the year in 1991 and the offensive player of the year in 1993. As a senior, she was named to the NSCAA All-MidAtlantic Region Team and was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in her senior class. Gibbons became the first Bucknell women’s soccer player to be elected to the Hall of Fame, entering with the Class of 2006.

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. the patriot league In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
