What it means to

BE A BISON “To me, what it means to be a Bison is giving your heart, mind and body to a school that you are proud of, with friends who are like family. It is desire and love for not only your game, but your team, and your school.” — Chelsea Brinkman ‘10

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2012.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 22-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 15 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS AND RECREATION CENTER

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 22 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Academic All-Americans in 42 years and 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 22 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. Celebrating its 10th birthday in 2012-13, the facility has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new indoor instructional golf center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

2012 BUCKNELL SOCCER

COACHING STAFF

BEN LANDIS

Head Coach Bucknell ’96 • Eighth Season LANDIS’ COACHING RECORD

• Overall: 83-71-12 (.536) • At Bucknell: 67-59-8 (.530)

Ben Landis took over as head coach of the Bucknell women’s soccer program in 2005, and the Bison enjoyed the most successful six-year span in program history during his first six years at the helm. Over that span, the Bison captured a Patriot League tournament title in 2005 followed by back-to-back regular-season crowns in 2006 and 2007 and runner-up finishes in 2008, 2009 and 2010. With a record of 67-59-5 at the helm of the Orange and Blue (33-15-1 in Patriot League play), Landis helped the Bison surpass the 10-win plateau in each of his first five seasons, marking the first time in program history the squad posted doubledigit wins in at least three consecutive seasons. The Bison have also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament six of Landis’ seven seasons. In 2011, Landis became the winningest coach in Bucknell women’s soccer history. In his first season back at his alma mater in 2005, Landis guided Bucknell to its second Patriot League championship, one of many successes the Bison achieved under his direction that season. The squad more than doubled scoring production from the year before, and went on to face Penn State in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Bison reached new heights, tying school records for wins, both overall (12) and in league play (6), and breaking the team’s previous marks for best goals-against average (0.99), winning percentage (.735) and winning and unbeaten streaks after posting seven consecutive victories. The Bison also earned their first Mid-Atlantic regional rankings from both SoccerBuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and posted its first win over a nationally ranked opponent, handing No. 14 Navy, which held a 19-0-0 record at the time, a 2-1 loss in the final game of the regular season to clinch a share of the Patriot League regular season title and earn the right to play host to the league tournament as the No. 1 seed. In 2007, Landis coached Bucknell to a 5-1-1 league mark, earning the squad the right to host the Patriot League Tournament as the regular season champion. The Bison, who finished as the tournament-runners up, posted an 11-8-1 overall mark, including a convincing 4-1 win over traditional Ivy League power Princeton. In 2008, Bucknell won 11 more matches and went 5-2 in league play. Landis’ squad broke the school record with eight shutouts and posted a big 3-2 road win over Maryland. He also coached Jennifer Dervarics to her second straight Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honor. In 2009, Landis’ squad went 10-8-1 overall and 5-2 in the league, and for the first time in program history the team earned a point against Penn State with a 0-0 draw in front of a large home crowd. Christa Matlack was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. Injuries played a major role in ending Bucknell’s run of winning seasons in 2010, but the Bison again posted a 5-2 Patriot League record and qualified for the postseason. And for the fifth year in a row Landis coached a major award winner, as

The third head coach in the 18-year history of the women’s soccer program, Landis, a 1996 graduate of Bucknell started his coaching career at Bucknell as a student assistant coach under Toby Lovecchio in 1994 and 1995. 2012 BUCKNELL SOCCER

COACHING STAFF

AMANDA WEBB

LEAH SIPE

Assistant Coach Dartmouth ’08 • Second Season

Assistant Coach Messiah ‘11 • First Season

Amanda Webb joined the Bison women’s soccer coaching staff in the summer of 2011, and now in her second season at Bucknell she has been promoted to the top assistant coach position. A 2008 graduate of Dartmouth College and a three-year starting goalkeeper for the Big Green, Webb came to Bucknell from Brandeis University, where in 2010 she served as an assistant coach for a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. As a student-athlete at Dartmouth, Webb helped the Big Green achieve a top-20 national ranking while setting the program record for lowest goalsagainst average. Dartmouth earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in her sophomore year in 2005. After graduation, Webb interned in the Student Life Department at The American Farm School in Thessaloniki, Greece. In addition to educating high school and college-aged students about American culture, she was the head coach of the school’s men’s college soccer team and assisted with the boys’ and girls’ high school teams. After one academic year in Greece, Webb served as the goalkeeping coach at Division I Northeastern University while completing her master’s degree in education at Boston University. In 2009 Northeastern earned the CAA regular-season title and hosted the CAA Championship, and Webb helped goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon earn second-team all-conference honors. Webb then moved on to Brandeis, where she was the only assistant coach on one of the most successful teams in program history. The Judges finished with a 15-5-1 record and won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time.

The newest addition to Ben Landis’ coaching staff is Leah Sipe, a December 2011 graduate of Messiah College. Sipe was a four-year member of Messiah’s powerful women’s soccer program, which captured three national championships and made four Final Four appearances during her tenure there. Sipe, who graduated with a degree in sports management, has already gained coaching experience at the club and camp level. She coached at both the Messiah and Penn State women’s soccer camps, and since March has been the U12 girls’ coach for the Penn Legacy club in the Lancaster area. A graduate of Ephrata High School, Sipe was a part of the Eastern Pennsylvania ODP program for four years and went to the regional camp for three years. As a defensive center midfielder at Messiah, she registered 56 career points on 21 goals and 14 assists, and she was a second team all-region selection in 2010. In her four years in college, the Falcons compiled an incredible 96-1-4 record, including national titles in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Sipe has studied or played in Brazil, Ghana and Canada, and she has also played with the Lancaster Inferno of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. 2012 BUCKNELL SOCCER

10 Evelyn Nicinski 19 Kayla Yee For head coach Ben Landis and the Bucknell women’s soccer team, the goals remain the same every single season, regardless of how many starters return or what the preseason polls might say. For the Bison, step one is always to qualify for the four-team Patriot League Tournament, preferably on home turf as the No. 1 seed. Steps two and three are to win the semifinal and championship matches and lift a trophy as Patriot League champions. And then step four is to represent Bucknell proudly and make a run in the NCAA Tournament. For the first six years of Ben Landis’ tenure, the first stage of the journey seemed to be a given. The Bison finished no worse than 5-2-0 in league play, comfortably qualified for the Patriot League Tournament, and hosted it in 2006 and 2007. In 2005, Landis’ first year back at his alma mater, Bucknell won the tourney and advanced to the NCAAs for the second time. Last season, however, the Bison fell short of the postseason for the first time since 2004, as a 1-0 loss to Navy on the final day of the season — the sixth 1-0 loss of the year — left them one victory shy. Bucknell has eight starters and 19 letterwinners back this season, as they look to render 2011 a one-year blip. Among the returnees are seven seniors, led by captains Meghan Fitzpatrick, Sandita McDermott and Kayla Yee. “We were humbled by last season,” said Landis, who is Bucknell’s all-time winningest women’s soccer coach with a 67-59-8 record in seven seasons. “The good news is that this group coming back has outstanding character. We are going to stick together, control what we can control, and work as hard as we can to get back into the postseason. We want to set the bar for the Patriot League. We are proud of our facility and our fans, and we want to get back to hosting championships.” The Bison must replace three graduated starters, one in each third of the field. Fullback Casey Crowley, center midfielder Tara Cort and forward Megan DeGennaro were all important players for multiple seasons, but Bucknell should still have plenty of experience across the pitch. Starting in the back, senior Sandita McDermott has elevated to one of the Patriot League’s premier goalkeepers. McDermott earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors last season after posting a 1.14 goalsagainst average, which was the third-best in program history. She also ranks in the top five on Bucknell’s career charts for save percentage (.802), goals-against average (1.45) and shutouts (7).

8

SEASON OUTLOOK “’Dita has a chance to be the best goalkeeper in the league this year,” said Landis. “She is our clear No. 1 coming into the season, and she has the ability to take us from being good to great. She is ready for that pressure and is excited to be a captain.” McDermott will be backed up by energetic freshman Jessie Ashworth and sophomore Dana Calderone, who has improved significantly since joining the team as a walk-on last year. Landis has praised Ashworth’s fearlessness and is comforted knowing he has depth at the goalkeeper position. In front of McDermott will be a back four that blends both experience and youth. When healthy, Fitzpatrick is one of Bucknell’s most talented and composed defenders. Health has been an issue, however. Fitzpatrick missed all of her first two seasons with injuries before playing well in eight games as a junior in 2011. She has been hobbled a bit in preseason as well, but Landis is hoping to have her available early in the year. Senior Corinne Collins and junior Bridget Gilmartin are also returning starters. Collins, who was one of only two Bison to start every game last season, spent the summer training and working on campus, and she can play either outside back or center back. Gilmartin started 14 games and played in 15 last season after missing her freshman campaign with an injury. Gilmartin is not only a strong outside back, but Landis feels that she is at her best when she can also push forward and join the attack. Senior Jenna Tryon enters the season as a probable starter on defense after battling some injuries late last season. Tryon is a versatile athlete who has seen time at a number of positions in her career, and Landis says that she is just the type of team player who will pitch in wherever needed. Sophomore Courtney Nelson spent most of last season in the back four, but the addition of some promising young defenders has allowed Landis to move Nelson up to an attacking position to make better use of her speed and creativity. Freshman Lauren Dandie is one of those newcomers hoping to make a quick impact, and she is a projected starter entering the season. Fellow newcomer Alex Rosen is an athletic, physical center back who could also see time this year as she continues to adjust to the college game. Sophomore Hannah Bonotto missed all of last season with injuries, but she made progress in the spring and is now one of the more improved players in the program. Sophomore Michaela Berman is also pushing for playing time after a productive summer spent working out on campus. “Defensively, for the most part this group now has enough games under their belt where we know how they complement each other,” said Landis. “Last year it took us awhile to get the combinations right, but as the season progressed that unit played very well. And we need our back four to be strong and cohesive right from day one this year.” Senior Taryn Boucher has been a mainstay in the midfield for the last two years and this year she will play the important, but often overlooked, role of holding center mid. Boucher is coming off an excellent spring season, and if she can lock down that position it will free up two of Bucknell’s best playmakers — senior Kayla Yee and sophomore Evelyn Nicinski — to push forward in front of her. Nicinski missed a few weeks last season while competing in Estonia for Poland’s U-19 national team. While in Lewisburg she made 11 starts for the Bison, and her first collegiate goal was a big one, coming early in a 1-0 Patriot League victory over Lehigh. Even bigger things are expected this year, as Nicinski becomes a clear target. Landis calls her “our true No. 10,” a playmaking center midfielder who can be very productive in an attacking role.

Yee has been bitten by the injury bug a couple of times in her career, but she is fully healthy entering 2012. Yee is a hard-working, physical athlete who can play both forward and center mid. She is one of the team’s best overall athletes, and she has scored some timely goals in her career. Yee’s play will be critical on a team that struggled to score goals last season. A young up-and-comer to watch at center mid is freshman Madison Loos, who hails from the same hometown (Centennial, Colo.) as Yee. In the preseason, Loos showed good skill and even better competitiveness, and she could be a factor as the season progresses. At the outside midfield positions, sophomores Nelson and Cassie Denger are the probable starters. Nelson began last season at fullback, but Landis moved her up late in the year with very positive results. Landis feels that she has the speed and strength to operate on the flanks, and if needed she could even move all the way up top. Denger also improved significantly as her rookie year progressed, and like Nelson, she possesses tremendous speed and athleticism. Junior Alex Degarmo enjoyed a strong spring after an injury-plagued 2011 fall campaign, and she could see some time at outside midfield. Junior Corey Tipton competed with the Bison track and field team in the spring, and she has come back to soccer with a fresh outlook and is pushing for her first significant playing time. Also keep an eye on freshman Devan Schulte, the daughter of Bucknell Hall-of-Fame water polo player Scott Schulte. Devan is 18 months removed from an ACL injury suffered in high school, but she is now fully fit and showing promise in preseason training. Bucknell was hindered by some goal-scoring droughts a year ago, and along with that talented group of midfielders, Landis feels that he has some young forwards ready to up their production this fall. Junior Chelsey Garkowski is coming off a breakthrough spring campaign, when the game started to slow down for her a bit and she was able to see the field more clearly. Garkowski has blazing speed, and Landis feels strongly that she has the tools to be 10-goal scorer and an All-Patriot League player. Junior Liz Dwornik is a very clever ballhandler who is equally adept with her back to the goal or faced up. Dwornik is now healthy after a minor injury in the spring, and the Bison will be counting on her to create scoring opportunities. Sophomore Brigit Falcón showed great promise last year, but she is working through an injury at the start of this season. When healthy, she is a very mobile player with a strong shot. Senior Emily Trosch has been a reserve forward and midfielder thoughout her career so far, but she is one of the team’s hardest workers and a valuable team leader. Freshman Danielle Piccirilli can play anywhere on the field, but she has been training primarily as a forward. She is a solid target who can keep the ball with her back to goal, and she is also a potential scoring threat inside the 18. “We obviously need to score goals,” said Landis. “We did that in the spring, and now we need to carry it over by being a smart, collaborative, possession-oriented team. It is going to be important to get off to a good start.” Bucknell will again face a challenging non-conference schedule in 2012, including road tests at Penn State and Rutgers as well as a cross-country trip to California to play in Saint Mary’s tournament. Landis feels that one advantage to this year’s schedule is that every match will be played on natural grass. Last season, the Bison played six times on artificial surfaces. In Patriot League play, the Bison will play their first four games at home, starting with Colgate on Sept. 29, before finishing up with an all-important road trip to Lehigh, Lafayette and Navy.

LIFE AFTER BUCKNELL

TOPS IN SALARY POTENTIAL

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2011, 94 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 838 graduates in that class, 812 (97 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 71 percent were employed, 18 percent were enrolled in graduate school, three percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and three percent were still seeking employment. Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 4 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2011 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated. In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median starting salary of $52,600 and a median mid-career salary of $108,000. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 14th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential. Bucknell alumni historically have had high job placement rates in their first year after graduation. Nine months after graduation, for instance, 84 percent of the members of the Class of 2010 were either employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school, according to Bucknell’s Career Development Center. A small percentage opted to travel, volunteer or do a combination of both. National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility. • In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers. • In February 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL

LISA GIBBONS ’95 was Bucknell’s first true superstar in the sport of women’s soccer, and she holds school and Patriot League scoring records that may never be broken. Women’s soccer became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1990, and in the program’s second year Gibbons came along and instantly helped the team to a seven-win season and credibility in Eastern soccer circles. She finished her career with a whopping 66 goals, 35 assists and 167 points. No other Bison player has scored more than 100 points or 39 goals since then. Gibbons scored 20 goals in 1993, then as a senior in 1994 she logged 19 goals and 19 assists for 57 points, the third-highest total in the nation that year. Gibbons was a First Team All-Patriot League selection three times, was the league’s rookie of the year in 1991 and the offensive player of the year in 1993. As a senior, she was named to the NSCAA AllMid-Atlantic Region Team and was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in her senior class. Gibbons became the first Bucknell women’s soccer player to be elected to the Hall of Fame, entering with the Class of 2006.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www. bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell

THE PATRIOT LEAGUE In its third decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
