Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014. All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.

In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 25 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 126 Academic All-Americans in 45 years and 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 25 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and the new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

KELLY KUSS

Head Coach Colgate ’06 • First Season Kelly Kuss, most recently an assistant coach at Dartmouth and a former standout Patriot League student-athlete herself, was named head women’s soccer coach at Bucknell on March 24, 2015. Kuss became the fourth head coach in the 25-year history of the Bison women’s soccer program, and she took over a team that is coming off a 10-9-1 season and a berth in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. A 2006 graduate of Colgate University, Kuss entered the coaching ranks at Amherst College, where she spent three years as an assistant coach with a nationally ranked Division III program. In 2010 she moved on to Dartmouth, and over the last five years with the Big Green she coached 26 All-Ivy League players and five NSCAA All-Region honorees. Dartmouth finished in second place in the competitive Ivy League in three of her five years there, and the team posted a 40-34-9 record during her tenure, including a 29-15-7 mark over the last three seasons. The 2012 team fell one shy of the school record for wins in a season with 13, and last year’s Big Green squad finished 8-5-4 overall and 3-1-3 in the Ivy League, just missing out on the conference title in a race that came down to the final day of the season. In addition to her on-field coaching duties at Dartmouth, Kuss also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator, and she was involved with the program’s fundraising and alumni functions. Those efforts helped lead to an overseas trip to England and Scotland in June 2013. While at Dartmouth, Kuss served as assistant director of Elite Soccer Camps of New England. From 2008-13 she was an Olympic Development Program (ODP) coach in New Hampshire, and during her tenure at Amherst she was assistant director of AWS Elite Soccer Academy. A native of Warners, New York, near Syracuse, Kuss is no stranger to the Patriot League. She was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Kuss was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history. At Colgate, Kuss was a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, and she earned the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. She also spent time playing in the W-League with the Rochester Rhinos and the Western Mass Pioneers. In 2010 she earned a master’s in education degree in higher education administration from the University of Massachusetts. “I would like to thank John Hardt, Maisha Kelly and the wonderful people I met during the hiring process at Bucknell,” said Kuss. “I was so impressed with the Bucknell athletic department, and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to join them. I am extremely excited about the opportunity to lead the Bucknell women’s soccer team. I believe Bucknell is the perfect fit for me professionally and personally. I value the studentathlete experience and the mission of Bucknell and the Patriot League. I look forward to meeting the student-athletes and getting to work. Finally, I would like to thank head coach Ron Rainey and the Dartmouth athletic administration for their support during my time at Dartmouth.” “I am excited to welcome Coach Kuss to the Bucknell Athletics family,” said director of athletics and recreation John Hardt at the time of her hiring. “As a former Patriot League student-athlete herself, and then as a coach at two academically rigorous institutions in Dartmouth and Amherst, Kelly knows first-hand what it takes to manage the challenges of being a student-athlete at an institution like Bucknell. I am confident that

experience and leadership will be immediate assets to the program, and that the women’s soccer team will continue to challenge for Patriot League titles on a regular basis.” Bucknell finished 4-4-1 in Patriot League play last season. Seeded fifth in the Patriot League Tournament, the Bison defeated fourth-seeded Army 2-1 in the quarterfinal round before falling 2-1 in a snowstorm at Colgate in the semifinals. Seven seniors will graduate from that squad, but eight of the team’s top 10 scorers are slated to return, along with the addition of a promising recruiting class. Kuss and her husband, Andrew Cook, were married in June 2015.

David Madsen joined the Bison in May 2015 after spending the last five years as an assistant at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. During Madsen’s tenure at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Panthers won four straight Horizon League championships and made four NCAA Tournament appearances from 2010-13. In 2011, the squad defeated Illinois State in the first round to mark the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history. Among his myriad of duties at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Madsen served as the team’s goalkeepers coach. His top goalkeeper in 2011, Jamie Forbes, posted 11 shutouts and was named the Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Most recently, keeper Paige Lincicum was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team in 2013. In addition to his on-field duties, Madsen played a major role in the program’s recruiting efforts, and he helped coordinate a number of community service and alumni events. He also assisted with the team’s academic enhancement efforts, and during his five years in Milwaukee coached nine NSCAA Scholar-All-Region and three Scholar All-America student-athletes. Prior to his arrival at Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2010, Madsen spent four years (2006-09) as the head men’s and women’s coach at Division III Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and three years (2003-05) as an assistant coach at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater, which is his alma mater. In 2008, Madsen led the Lakeland men to their first winning season since 1994. The Muskies went 8-7-2 that year and posted a school record for goals in a season. On the women’s side, Lakeland posted a pair of 10win seasons during his tenure. He has also been active in the club soccer scene. He has served as the club goalkeeper coach with North Shore United Soccer Club and FC Wisconsin Soccer Club. He has also been a staff member with the Wisconsin Olympic Development Program and the Wisconsin’s US Soccer Training Center while also serving as director and partner of the Milwaukee Elite Academy Soccer Camps. A Milwaukee native, Madsen was a goalkeeper during his playing days at Wisconsin-Whitewater, and he captained the team as a senior in 2002. He led the team to three NCAA Round of 16 appearances and posted a career 0.92 goals-against average with 24 shutouts and a 38-14-4 record. He was an NSCAA All-Region selection in 2002. Madsen was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at UWW. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in December 2003 and his master’s in curriculum and instruction in December 2005. “David brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the program,” said head coach Kelly Kuss. “He comes from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, where he helped guide the team to four NCAA appearances in five years. David has trained high-level goalkeepers at the college and semi-professional levels, and he was instrumental in the success of the back line at UW Milwaukee. David also spent time as a head coach at the Division III level and has experience in all aspects of the profession. He has a great mind for the game and will be a tremendous asset to the program. I feel very fortunate to have David as a part of our staff at Bucknell.”

Leigh Howard joined the Bison women’s soccer staff in May 2015. Previously, Howard was both a coach and a student-athlete at Trinity College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in May 2012 and a master’s in American studies in May 2014. In her second year as an assistant coach at Trinity in 2013, Howard helped lead the team to its best season in program history. The Bantams posted a school-record 13 victories (13-4-1) and won a game in its very first NCAA Tournament appearance. That team was ranked No. 1 in the New England Region for part of the season and finished in the national top-25 for the first time. Howard was involved with all aspects of the Trinity program on and off the field, and she recruited a student-athlete who became the NESCAC scoring leader and Rookie of the Year in her first collegiate season. Howard developed an annual Alumni Day event along with an online networking group that helped increase the program’s alumni involvement by 250 percent. Howard also implemented an academic support program, which helped lead to a combined team grade-point average of 3.5. Since June 2014, Howard has served as head coach with the FSA FC United ECNL U18 club team, and she has been an assistant coach in the Connecticut Olympic Development Program. During the spring of her junior year at Trinity, Howard interned with Amandla EduFootball in Cape Town, South Africa. She helped organize and supervise leagues in 11 children’s homes the Cape Town area, and she helped organize the Crime Prevention League in the township of Khayelitsha. Howard went abroad again in the summer of 2013, this time to Grenada, Nicaragua with the Soccer Without Borders program. As a student-athlete at Trinity, Howard was named team captain as a senior, and she was the women’s soccer program’s first four-time AllNESCAC selection. Howard equaled the team record for points in a season with 26 on 10 goals and six assists as a sophomore, and her career total of 69 points (28G, 13A) ranks No. 3 in program history. “Leigh has tremendous energy and passion for the game,” said head coach Kelly Kuss. “She was a standout student-athlete at Trinity College and will be a great mentor for the women in the Bucknell women’s soccer program. Leigh comes from a family with a strong background in soccer, and I am happy to see her pursuing her passion in coaching at the Division I level. Leigh’s work ethic and dynamic personality will be very valuable for the program, and she will be a great addition to our staff.”

Cora Climo A new era of Bucknell women’s soccer gets underway this fall, as former Colgate standout Kelly Kuss takes over as head coach of a program that is looking to build from a 10-win season and a trip to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. The Bison have seven starters and 18 letterwinners back from that squad, and Kuss is excited about the team’s blend of experience and youth as she embarks on her first season as a head coach. “The response from the team to a brand new coaching staff has been terrific, and I attribute that to our outstanding senior leadership,” said Kuss, who will be joined on the sideline by David Madsen and Leigh Howard. “They have been able to hear three different voices throughout the preseason. The style of play is going to be somewhat similar, but we are asking them to think about the game in different ways and play outside of their comfort zone.” Last season, Bucknell finished 10-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison were the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and then they went to West Point and scored the first two goals in a 2-1 victory over Army in the quarterfinals. A frustrating 2-1 semifinal loss in a snowstorm at Colgate ended the postseason run, and Kuss senses that the game in Hamilton will serve as lingering motivation for the 2015 squad. “This group got a taste of championship weekend, and I don’t think they are satisfied,” said Kuss. “They have a hunger to get into that championship game and play for the title, especially the seniors.” Lauren Dandie, Madison Loos and Devan Schulte will serve as senior tri-captains this season, and fellow seniors Jessie Ashworth and Danielle Piccirilli have also been important parts of the team’s leadership.

“The seniors have just been outstanding,” praised Kuss. “Any time you have a coaching transition, you are relying on your seniors to make the process as smooth as possible.” Taking a look at the Bison personnel from back to front, Kuss has two experienced goalkeepers returning in the senior Ashworth and junior Jessica Ratner. Ashworth saw most of the time between the pipes last season, starting 18 of the 21 games while posting a 1.38 goals-against average and four shutouts. Ratner has made five career starts and has three shutouts with a 1.19 goals-against average. “Both keepers have experience playing on Emmitt Field,” said Kuss. “They both bring very different strengths to the game, and we know that we have two good options there. I envision that we will take it day-by-day and see who is performing the best.” In the back four, Bucknell will have to replace two stalwarts in dynamic right back Courtney Nelson, a two-time All-Patriot League selection, as well as a three-year starting center back in Hannah Bonotto. Fortunately, two veterans do return in the senior captain Dandie and junior Kelsey Witt, who was outstanding on the left side in her first year as a starter last fall. “Having a senior captain in the back four is very important for our leadership and our defensive organization,” Kuss noted. “Her experience and communication back there is invaluable. Kelsey Witt saw a lot of time last year and has emerged as a tough back who is difficult to get around, and with her speed she can also get downfield and pose a threat in the attack.” While Witt will handle one of the outside back positions, sophomore Jackie Ham is the most likely candidate to play on the opposite side. This is a position change for Ham, who scored two goals

as a wide midfielder last season. “Jackie has shown very well in the preseason,” said Kuss. “She has great pace, and because of her previous attacking experience is a dangerous threat getting forward into the attack.” A pair of returnees in junior Sam Powers and sophomore Karli Cirovski will be vying for the fourth starting spot on the back line. After missing all of her freshman campaign with an injury, Powers played in 21 games with 11 starts last year, mainly as a defensive center midfielder. Cirovski played in nine games as a reserve fullback. Kuss is also very pleased with the talent in the first-year class of defenders, with Camille Andrews, Maddie Dano and walk-on Melissa MacPherson all performing well during preseason training. The Bison return the majority of their minutes from last season in the midfield, led by a 2014 Second Team All-Patriot League selection and 2015 Preseason All-Patriot League pick in Madison Loos. Sophomore Meghan Holtz, who was last year’s Bison newcomer of the year, and

Kelsey Witt junior Cora Climo are also returning starters, while junior Shannon Donlon and sophomore Carolyn Casey have seen time as reserves. Also back is senior captain Devan Schulte, a former starter who is fit after missing all of 2014 with a knee injury. “I anticipate the midfield to be very competitive,” said Kuss. “Madison Loos and Devan Schulte, both seniors in the midfield, give us great leadership and positive communication. When you combine that with the experience of Cora Climo and Meghan Holtz, it’s a very strong group.” A trio of first-year players in Carly Baggott, Riley Coopersmith and Maddy Hackley will also be looking to make an impact. All three are natural central midfielders. The Bison received goal-scoring from up and

down the roster last season, with 14 different players finding the net at least once. Sophomore Kendall Ham, who had the finishing touch on five of the team’s 31 goals, is back and hungry for even more production in year No. 2. Juniors Alexis Gannon (3 goals, 2 assists) and Sarah Bresette (2 goals, 2 assists), senior Danielle Piccirilli (2 goals, 1 assist) and sophomore Maddie Mulford (1 goal, 4 assists) are all experienced, productive performers. Newcomers Casey Gray, Shelby Roberts and Talia Szatkowski were all prolific scorers at the high school and club levels, and now they are looking to break into the mix with the Bison. “Kendall Ham is our top returning scorer, and I anticipate her keeping on an upward trend as a sophomore,” said Kuss. “She has great pace and a knack for goal-scoring. Alexis Gannon and Sarah Bresette are coming off solid sophomore seasons, and both are looking to become even more impactful this year. We have a lot of options, now we need to see who steps up and can produce.” Bucknell has a challenging non-conference schedule ahead, including a trip to the West Coast to play Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State at the end of August, as well as a first-ever matchup with Ohio State in Columbus on Sept. 13. The Bison have home non-league dates with Towson, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Iona, and they will also travel to UMBC, Mount St. Mary’s and Duquesne. The Patriot League schedule starts on Sept. 20 with a trip to defending-champion Boston University. Holy Cross, Colgate, Navy, Loyola and Army West Point all visit Emmitt Field this year, with the Black Knights coming in for the regularseason finale on Halloween. Once again this season, the top six teams will qualify for the Patriot League Tournament,

Alexis Gannon with the two highest seeds receiving quarterfinal byes. The No. 1 seed will host the semifinals and championship on Nov. 6 and 8, with the tournament champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Bucknell’s last NCAA appearance was in 2005, and Kuss believes the challenging schedule will help prepare the Bison for another postseason run. “We have some very tough tests in the preleague games, and the goal is to put us in position to peak going into league play,” said Kuss. “We need to improve our record on the road, and against the top teams in our league. We want to crack into that top group.”

The Patriot League is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015-16, and in August the league unveiled 25-person anniversary teams for each sport. Bucknell had three honorees in women’s soccer: Hall-of-Famer Lisa Gibbons ‘95, Jennifer Dervarics ‘09 and Christa Matlack ‘11. Lisa Gibbons (1991-94) — Gibbons remains the Patriot League record holder in career points (167) and goals (66) more than 20 years after establishing these marks. She was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 1991 and the Patriot League Player of the Year in 1993. A three-time first-team All-Patriot League selection, Gibbons was named to the NSCAA All-Region first team as a senior. She was indicted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Jennifer Dervarics (2005-08) — Dervarics was a member of the 2005 Bison squad that became the first No. 4 seed to win a Patriot League title, and she finished her career as the third-leading scorer in program history in both goals and total points. She was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and was an NSCAA All-Region second team selection as a senior. Christa Matlack (2007-10) — Matlack helped the Bison win or share Patriot League regular-season titles in 2007 and 2010 and was named a first-team AllPatriot League selection in her final three seasons. She is in the top five in program history in goals (32), points (78) and game-winning goals (10). Matlack was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year twice and was an NSCAA All-Region second team selection in 2009.

The 2001 Bucknell women’s soccer team defeated American and Navy on its way to winning the Patriot League Championship and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The third-seeded Bison downed the top-seeded Mids 2-1 in overtime to claim its first-ever Patriot League title. Lauren Schwarz scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick 3:07 into overtime. Bucknell fell to seventh-ranked Penn State 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bison finished the season with a 12-7-0 record and were led in scoring by Savannah Rennels, who tallied 12 goals and one assist. She and Lindsay Slomer were named to the All-Patriot League First Team. Tara Utchel landed a spot on the all-league second team, while freshman Ashley Dincher garnered Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year honors. Chrissy Findlay was named Coach of the Year.

In 2005, the Bucknell women’s soccer team upset Lehigh and Army to become the first No. 4 seed in Patriot League history to win the postseason tournament. The Bison downed the Black Knights by a 3-1 margin in the championship game after advancing past No. 1 seed Lehigh in the semifinal round with a thrilling 6-5 decision in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw with the Mountain Hawks. Shannon Curd was named Patriot League Tournament MVP . Bucknell faced Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and fell by the score of 6-0. The Bison ended 2005 with a record of 11-9-1, 4-3-0 in the Patriot League. Jennifer Margolis led the team in scoring with 13 goals and three assists for 29 points. Margolis represented the Orange and Blue on the All-Patriot League First Team while Krista Lee Gentile was named to the all-league second team.

TOPS IN SALARY POTENTIAL Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 3 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2015 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer in Money Magazine. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated. In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median early career salary of $56,000, and the magainze ranked Bucknell No. 37 on its list of best colleges.

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2013, 97 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 849 graduates in that class, 841 (99 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 71 percent were employed, 16 percent were enrolled in graduate school, five percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and three percent were still seeking employment or awaiting graduate school admission. Of those attending graduate school, 22 percent are in medical school, 15 percent are pursuing degrees in social sciences and the humanities, 13 percent are studying engineering, six percent are in law school, five percent are seeking advanced degrees in science, and the remaining 39 percent are continuing their studies in areas such as business and education. The mean salary for the 2013 graduates responding to the survey was $48,506 and was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering was $71,250, and the mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration/accounting was $55,297. Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $41,980. Most 2013 graduates (82 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (22 percent), New York City (19 percent) and New Jersey (15 percent) leading the way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as Accenture, AmeriCorps, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, KPMG, Merck & Company, Inc., PricewaterhouseCoopers, Teach for America, Turner Construction, UBS and U.S. Army. Many of the class respondents secured employment through Bucknell on-campus interviews, Career Development Center leads, networking or offers from former employees.

LISA GIBBONS ’95 was Bucknell’s first true superstar in the sport of women’s soccer, and she holds school and Patriot League scoring records that may never be broken. Women’s soccer became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1990, and in the program’s second year Gibbons came along and instantly helped the team to a seven-win season and credibility in Eastern soccer circles. She finished her career with a whopping 66 goals, 35 assists and 167 points. No other Bison player has scored more than 100 points or 39 goals since then. Gibbons scored 20 goals in 1993, then as a senior in 1994 she logged 19 goals and 19 assists for 57 points, the third-highest total in the nation that year. Gibbons was a First Team All-Patriot League selection three times, was the league’s rookie of the year in 1991 and the offensive player of the year in 1993. As a senior, she was named to the NSCAA AllMid-Atlantic Region Team and was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in her senior class. Gibbons became the first Bucknell women’s soccer player to be elected to the Hall of Fame, entering with the Class of 2006.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support studentathletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first four years, and much more is planned in 2015-16. Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the women’s soccer team in 2015 will be Lauren Dandie, Alexis Gannon and Devan Schulte. Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include: • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime

THE PATRIOT LEAGUE The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. The Patriot League began as a successful Division I-AA (now called Football Championship Subdivision) football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing, Georgetown in both football and women’s rowing, and Richmond in women’s golf. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. The Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 24 sports (11 for men; 13 for women). Championship teams from 15 sports are guaranteed advancement into NCAA post-season competition: baseball, men and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men and women’s lacrosse, rowing, men and women’s soccer, softball, men and women’s tennis and volleyball. Along the timeline of Patriot League history about three-quarters of the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year also received All-Patriot League status for their exemplary athletic performance. In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.
