Jack’s story COMMUTING AND GETTING IT RIGHT
Hi, I’m Jack. I am a Graphic Design student here at BNU, and I am also a commuting student.
I was unsure about going to university and I was nervous to move away from home. As a result of this, I decided to explore universities closer to home that would allow me to remain living at home. I live in West London which is around a 25-minute drive from our High Wycombe Campus. I am very happy with my decision. Because I live near to BNU’s Uxbridge Campus, I am able to take the campus link bus which is funded by the University and runs on a frequent hourly basis throughout the day.
My main worry with being a commuting student surrounded the potential for friendships. This concern was quickly overcome due to the welcome here at BNU. Within my very first weeks, I was confident in calling not only my new course mates friends but also many on other courses. This is thanks to the collaboration between courses we offer here at BNU, meaning that I get to mix with students from a wide range of specialisms. In addition to this, schemes and societies have ensured that I never feel isolated despite the fact I do not live in Halls of Residence. Whilst I am still close to my family and high school friends, I do feel that the relationships and friends I have made here at BNU are long lasting.
Course: BA (Hons) Graphic Design
Location: High Wycombe Campus
With regards to nightlife, being a commuting student has not affected this at all. Thanks to the BIG Deal I have been able to access all the events I have wanted with no issues so I can still enjoy myself with my peers outside of lesson times. Yes, my night out does usually end with a 25-minute bus journey or an Uber, but this does not stop me having a good time.
I have gained skills like confidence, communication, independence and many others. Moreover, I have made strides in my professional career having had the opportunity to work with live briefs from clients both online and in person.
So, if you are anxious about university, I promise nobody is going to force you to move across the country and the university experience will still welcome you with open arms here at BNU.
