This term, some students are stepping into the spotlight with an exciting initiative designed to bring their voices directly to the heart of decision-making. On Council Day, five students will share their lived experiences with the University Council Board in a dedicated two-hour session.
This initiative is not only a meaningful opportunity for students to influence future decision-making but also a valuable addition to their portfolios, showcasing their active engagement in shaping the university experience. After Council Day, the participating students will share their insights and experiences through various channels, including the student newspaper, Union Council, and other forums, ensuring their perspectives resonate across the wider student community.
We are excited to announce the upcoming Interprofessional Learning (IPL) Connecting Health and Social Care Conference 2025, designed specifically for first-year students across health and social care programmes. This co-curricular allday event will take place on Wednesday 21 May 2025, and aims to bring together students from different specialties to collaborate, learn, and enhance their understanding of health and social care through a multidisciplinary approach.
Tickets for this FREE event will be available on the “What’s On” page within the next two weeks. Keep a look out and be sure to book your spot, it’s set to be an exciting and impactful occasion you won’t want to miss.
The Renters’ Rights Bill is making waves as it moves through Parliament, with significant updates that could directly impact students. One of the key changes is a new government amendment that will limit landlords to requesting just one month’s rent upfront, alongside the usual deposit allowed under the Tenant Fees Act 2019.
This is a big win for many students, particularly those who previously faced demands for six months’ or even a year’s rent upfront, often because they lacked a UK-based guarantor. The change aims to make renting more accessible and fairer for students and low-income renters.
However, concerns remain about how affordability will be assessed, especially for international students and those with irregular income. Additionally, landlords may adjust their practices, which could
shift the timing of the student housing market and potentially impact availability.
The Bill also introduces restrictions on student tenancies, such as banning agreements more than six months before move-in dates and allowing landlords to evict students during the summer break. While these measures aim to prevent students from being locked into contracts too early, they may create challenges, such as housing crunches during peak months.
It’s important that we all stay informed about these changes and prepare for how they might impact student housing. As the Renters’ Rights Bill moves to the House of Lords for further scrutiny, there’s still time for adjustments to better address student concerns. I’ll continue to keep updated on the developments and share updates so we can ensure student voices are heard with further opportunities to support this movement.
On Saturday 15 February 2025, Harry and I will be taking part in the Big Sleepout at Adams Park, and we’d love for you to join us! This event is not just a chance to raise vital funds for an amazing cause but also an opportunity to gain insight into the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
To get involved, simply register individually through the Big Sleepout page (scan QR below), even if you’re part of a group. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive a fundraising pack to help you meet the goal, £20 per individual or £50 for groups of 5-6.
We’re arranging transportation to make it easier for everyone to participate. Spaces are limited, so it’s first come, first served.
This event is a meaningful way to make a difference, and we’d love to see you there. If you would like any more information either email myself or Harry or drop by the SU office or visit the What’s On page.
It’s crazy to think that we’re already halfway through the year! So much has happened! I can’t believe it’s only been a few months, but I’ve enjoyed all the learning experiences and opportunities this role has presented me with. From different committees and board meetings, to running campaigns, hosting events, and even helping with Varsity 2025 preparations; it’s been a jam-packed end to 2024.
My highlights so far:

@buckssuvpab
Bucks VPAB
Freshers Fair 2024 was the first big highlight with so many clubs and societies recruiting, stalls from outside businesses and fantastic performances from some of our student groups. Helping to organise and run the event was a brilliant experience and a great first leap into the role of Vice President Achievement and Belonging. Convincing the other officers to dress up in blow up costumes was also a hilarious time and laughing with the students at us dressed as cows and sharks was a massive highlight of the day.
We celebrated Diwali at the end of October with the help of a few students who joined us in organising and setting up the celebration. We enjoyed good food and played music chosen by the students which really heightened the event. I’d also like to highlight the Diwali celebration that the Student Hub and Chaplaincy hosted where we learned what Diwali is about and why we celebrate it. The Students’ Union supported their celebration with a contribution to the food and seeing such a large number of students turn up was brilliant.
One of my biggest highlights of course has to be Movember. In collaboration with Harry (VPEW) and Bucks Men’s Rugby, I ran a successful Movember campaign across the month of November, raising money and awareness for men’s mental health, and testicular and prostate cancer. I organised a 12km walk around the local countryside, Men’s Rugby and Harry spoke to students about mental health and the importance of talking to someone if you’re struggling and the Gateway Gym opened their yoga sessions to all students and staff for free over the month. The final night of the campaign was the Mo Party which boosted our fundraising to a final amount raised of £668.18! Thank you to everyone involved and to all those who donated! And remember that there’s always someone there for you.
The day is fast approaching! Varsity is here! But what is it?
Every year, our sports teams play against Roehampton University in a massive sports-day event with the aim of winning the one and only Roe-Buck Varsity Trophy! Each of our teams play for a point and across the day the points are added up with the result being announced after the final fixture. Varsity is the biggest event in our sports calendar and this year we’re playing away at Roehampton University. Spectators and athletes will need to buy tickets at £15 each to attend, but this includes your lunch on the day, travel to and from Roehampton (if required), a specially designed t-shirt and entry into all of the events so make sure not to miss out! Tickets are on sale NOW!
For updates, follow @bucksvarsity on Instagram and keep an eye on the What’s On page on our website.
We won the trophy back last year so let’s support our athletes and bring it home again, let’s go Bucks, let’s go!!
Welcome everyone. Whether you’re back from a break or just starting your university journey, hello!
I’m Bethany, your Vice President Education and Welfare (Uxbridge and Aylesbury). I’m here to support your experience, with a focus around the education and welfare aspects. Some of you may have seen me in your welcome talks at the beginning of January, some of you may have seen me at The Venue during refreshers, you might have seen me on the website, or you might not have seen me. If you haven’t, hello!
I stand as part of your elected officer team supporting and helping make life better for students at Bucks.
Starting off with refreshers. These weeks have been spent making introductions, meeting more students, and saying hello to everyone. Returning students are also included here and encouraged to get stuck in too! At the Uxbridge and Aylesbury campus, a range of activities were running. These activities varied from games, to crafts, to free hot drinks, and chats. These activities were designed to give a space for students, returning and those just starting

your journey, to socialise, meet and join over a common activity. These events were well attended by new and returning students alike. Thank you those who came, took part, and spoke to us to tell us how you found everything and what else you are looking forward to. Please continue to share your thoughts with us, you can do this by using the website or emailing union@bnu.ac.uk with your ideas.
In the last edition of the paper, I gave an overview of everything I had been working on since I came into office in July. You can check out that December 2024 Edition 119 below.

In addition to that, we have also been working with the university to add to your experience. Some of which I can update on are:
The campus link: We worked the university, and the bus has a trip running at the midpoint of the day. Check out the new bus schedule here below.
Park room seating: We have worked with the university to provide more seating and suitable seating for classes in the park room. At this stage, the order is waiting to be processed. There is no set delivery date yet. Please reach out if there are any further concerns or feedback around seating at Uxbridge.
In terms of campaigns, I am working on:
Kitting Out Wellbeing: Wellbeing kits have been launched. You can collect these from any campus from the Students’ Union offices. You can also email bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk or union@bnu.ac.uk about any questions. These kits offer self-help strategies and signposting to services. Check out the article on page 12.
Break the stigma: Running in March, students can join the pledge to ‘break the stigma’ around mental health. During this time, (dates, times, and location to be released soon), students can join the pledge by designing their ‘lolly pop stick’ and then snapping it to join the collage, which will be based at the Uxbridge campus. This is to show support to break the stigmas around mental health.
Being safe online: This campaign is based around raising awareness for being safe online and aims to educate on how to keep yourself safe, by sharing tips, tricks, and signs to look for. Keep and eye for more information soon.
Quiet Space: I am working on readdressing a quiet space on the Uxbridge campus. I have been researching other universities’ quiet spaces, what these look like, how they run, and their purpose. I am keen to address this area but need student input and feedback about what you would like this potential area to look like. Please reach out to share your ideas or pop into the office to chat.
For Uxbridge and Aylesbury students, we ran some activities at the start of January. Many of these events were well attended and I look forward to running them again. However, is there an activity that you want to see or take part in? Tell us what you are looking for by emailing union@bnu.ac.uk or bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk Alternatively, you can scan the QR codes at both the Uxbridge and Aylesbury campuses to share your ideas.
If you are after a few tips and tricks or some more information about how to help you navigate the cost-of-living crisis, check out the Bucks Big Budget Busting Booklet. In this booklet you’ll find a range of information, as well as tips and tricks you can use. This is a quick guide to supporting you during your time studying.
I am volunteering to raise funds for the Wycombe Homeless Connections charity. This is fundraising opportunity students can volunteer to take part to fundraise too! You can do this solo or in a group. Check out the What’s on page to sign up. You can check out the website for more information below or or check out the article on page 13
Did you know that at all three campuses you can access board games?
These are free to use and can be played throughout the day. Please return the games when you have finished with
them, so other students may use them too. If you can’t see a game you want to play, let us know.
You find these games at:
High Wycombe campus, in the Lounge by the foosball table.
Uxbridge campus, these are in Pulse, on the shelf, by the window.
Aylesbury campus, on the ground floor by the ‘help yourself to the bookshelf’, in the box labelled “Games”.
Tell us how you find these games. Who’s the best at scrabble? The best at Connect4? Does anyone cheat in Uno? We hope you enjoy using these games.
There is still much planned for the remainder of my term. Follow the Students’ Union socials to see what we get up to and what we have planned. Keep checking the What’s On page (scan QR code below) to see what you can get involved in. You can always reach out if you need support or someone to talk to or to suggest an idea.
Kitting Out Wellbeing is a campaign focused around promoting your wellbeing whilst you’re at university. With an aim to support you and feel confident with your wellbeing (mental and physical) there are many aspects to each element and these kits are another step in supporting you.
Starting off, what is wellbeing to you? Is it the song you play on repeat, a walk in the evening, health, purpose, satisfaction? Wellbeing is different for every individual. We are all unique and have our own experiences. It’s important to find those aspects that give you a boost and also identify those that don’t. Over time you will have picked up different strategies, techniques, likes and dislikes that work for you. Remember that your wellbeing will not be an exact copy of someone else’s.
Find what works for you. You could try different things, like journalling or swimming until you find the things that support you and give you that boost. Find your big little thing, this relates to finding something easy to do that you get enjoyment, satisfaction from. Something that makes you feel good.
As part of this campaign, we have created wellbeing kits to support you. These boxes contain self-help technique cards, support service cards, Epsom bath salts, hand cream, a hot beverage sachet, mini notebook, pen, and a mini stress ball. The boxes themselves are also a technique as you can decorate this kit to make it yours. You can draw, doddle and design these boxes so that this box is completely yours. You can also personalise the kit by adding in your own items after collecting a box from the SU.
You can collect a wellbeing kit from the Students Union office at any of the campuses (High Wycombe, Uxbridge and Aylesbury). You can also email bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk or union@bnu.ac.uk about a wellbeing kit. These are offered on a first come, first serve basis.
These boxes were designed to support wellbeing using a variety of self-help techniques and signposting. Please reach out if you need support.
Check out the website for more info:
Swap your bed for the events hall floor on Saturday 1 February.
Swap your bed for the events hall floor. Bring your duvet, sleeping bags, pillows and join us, your elected officers Bethany and Wren, for the night to raise funds for Wycombe Homeless Connections.
Wycombe Homeless Connections are a charity who operate in the South Buckinghamshire area. They work with individuals who are homeless or could face homelessness. They work with individuals to support them the harm homelessness could cause. This could be through finding emergency housing, offering advice and support, emergency parcels and packs and registering for ID. (you can read more about the work they do here wyhoc.org.uk/what-we-do)
For the second year running, join us in the events hall as we fundraise. The event starts at 7pm meeting at the Events Hall at the High Wycombe campus. We will be hosting some activities in the early evening before going completely quiet so those wishing to sleep can. The event ends at 7am the following morning (don’t worry, we’ll wake up if you’re not an early riser).
You can come on your own or in a group. Please make sure you have signed up on the website, and you submit any fundraising using the just giving page here .
This 12-hour volunteering opportunity gains you community hours and gives you an experience and idea of what it can be like.
If you have any questions, please email: wren.sell@bnu.ac.uk or bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk or volunteering@bnu.ac.uk
A project derived from the cost-of-living campaign run by Bucks Students’ Union to make sure you are fed and well. The campaign aims to tackle food poverty within the student community at BNU by cutting the prices of food in our cafés and The Lounge hosting three free hot meals a week. This is funded and supported by BNU and delivered by Bucks Students’ Union.
Where is it?
The Lounge in Bucks Student’s Union (look for the large elected officer banner and head in that way). You can walk along the road with the speed bumps from the Gateway reception to find the banner.
When is it?
Three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, 5.30pm–7.30pm. You’ll just need to bring your student ID and a good appetite.
This is all free to help with the cost-of-living crisis.
What about Uxbridge and Aylesbury?
Pulse and Basin also partake in The Big Bucks Meal Deal - Pulse giving free Breakfast twice a week and Basin free lunch twice a week. This is provided by Gather & Gather, keep an eye out in these cafes for more information.

The elections decide who will fill the four Elected Officer positions for the next academic year. These are full-time, paid roles where students take the lead in directing the work of the Students’ Union. If there are changes you want to see, this is your chance to influence the Union and make a real impact.
Alongside the full-time roles, there are part-time leadership positions that you can hold while continuing your studies. These include the Student Trustee positions – a unique opportunity to help shape the Union’s strategy as part of the Trustee Board.
Finally, there are elections for Student Reps and club and society committees Student reps act as the voice of their course, ensuring the student experience is heard, celebrated, and improved where needed. Club and society committee members, such as Chairs, Secretaries, and Treasurers, play key roles in organising and leading their groups.
The Students’ Union exists to represent you – and that’s why these elections are so vital. You’ll be choosing the people who will lead the Union during the 202526 academic year, so it’s essential to vote for candidates who reflect your priorities and goals.
Each candidate will share a manifesto explaining what they aim to achieve if elected. This is your chance to judge:
• Who represents your views and interests best?
• Who do you think can bring about the most positive and effective changes at BNU?
Voting is your voice. Make sure you use it when elections open from Monday 3 March to Friday 7 March.
Do you want to make life better for students at BNU? Are you passionate about representing your peers and ensuring their voices are heard? If so, this is your moment to step up!
Nominating yourself is easy. Head to the Elections homepage, select the role you’re interested in and log in with your Blackboard details. Click ‘Stand in Election’, follow the steps, upload a photo, and share your manifesto – and you’re ready to go!
• Nominations for Elected Officer positions are open now
• Nominations for student leadership roles open on Monday 6 January
• All nominations close at noon on Friday 14 February, so don’t miss out!
Whether you’re curious about becoming a Student Rep, excited by the opportunity to be a Student Trustee, or inspired to run for an Elected Officer role, now is the time to step forward. Start writing your manifesto, and take the first step towards shaping your Union and making a real difference at BNU.
If you’ve got any questions or want to know more about the roles, drop us an email at surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk.

Hi everyone. Following our third Union Council of the year on Thursday 12 December, here’s a summary for those who missed it. We had a usual Elected Officer updates and spoke about Student Life at BNU for an exciting opportunity coming up. We also changed the order of the Elected Officer updates to see how this came across.
Our Elected Officers have been busy with events and campaigns. Due to Harry’s absence, Bethany gave his updates on his behalf. Here are a few of the highlights.
Amy Pile (President), updated us on the Safety Net Campaign, University Council and Accommodation issues. The Safety Net Campaign is the new name for the Umbrella of Safety campaign she has recently been speaking about and working on. Shortly, there will be an article released with all the information. At the University Council, the SU presented a paper which one of the main topics included were student safety. A few months back at a Union Council meeting, there were issues raised about the Student Accommodation. The University are now rectifying these issues. (amy.pile@bnu.ac.uk)
Wren Sell (Vice President Achievement and Belonging), cpdated us on the Student Mixers they have been attending, their ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ campaign, Movember, and Varsity Captain. The ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ campaign is to
ensure that all rubbish is disposed of correctly, e.g. recycling and general waste. Posters have been put up around campus and Accommodation showing information about how to use each bins. The final amount raised for Movember is a grand total of £668.18. Well done to everyone who got involved and massive thanks to all who donated. The nominations for Varsity Captains opened on the 6th January. If you are interested, you can nominate yourself on the SU website. If you have any questions regarding Varisty Captains, you can speak to the Committee of societies of reach out to Wren. (wren.sell@bnu.ac.uk)
Harry Tomlinson (Vice President Education and Welfare (HW), updated us on the Smile Campaign in High Wycombe and Harold’s Hydration. During the Smile Campaign for High Wycombe, students and all the Elected Officer’s handed out Fairtrade products to the community and received a total of 2000 smiles. Thank you to all students who got involved in this volunteering experience. (harry.tomlinson@bnu.ac.uk)
Bethany Jackson (Vice President Education and Welfare (Uxb/Ayls), updated us on the Volunteer Event she attended, the Smile Campaign in Uxbridge and Takeovers in Uxbridge. Bethany was invited to a thank you event by One Can Trust, which was also attended by other volunteers who have helped One Can Trust throughout 2024. In Uxbridge for the Smile Campaign, Uxbridge students and Bethany handed out Fairtrade to the community and received a total of 58 smiles. Thank you to all students who got involved in this volunteering experience. The SU activities team and Bethany held a takeover in Uxbridge at the end of November and intend to do another one at the end of January. (bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk)
Life at
Activity The purpose of the activity:
The University Council is a university committee that reviews the running of university to ensure it is doing the best for the students. The committee includes external members and reviews items such as governance, strategy and decisions made. For the next meeting on the 5th February, students have the opportunity to attend. The council would like 4 to 6 students to come and talk about their different and individual university experiences. After sharing the experiences, the council members will break off into groups, are given one of the scenarios to discuss and come up with what support they would offer the student. Attending students have the opportunity to be part of these groups and help, and also speak directly with the council members. If any students are interested in this opportunity, please reach out to Amy (amy.pile@bnu.ac.uk). As part of the meeting, there will be a board which will have other student experiences for the council members to read.
At the Union Council meeting, we asked attendees to answer questions about their student experiences at BNU. These answers would be put on the board. The answers could be anonymous or have their names attached. Answers were either submitted via Menti or by using Post-It notes. The questions were as follows:
• What has been the most positive aspect of your time at university so far and why?
• Are there any challenges or obstacles you’ve faced during your studies and how could the university improve to address these?
• How satisfied are you with the resources and facilities provided by the university (e.g. libraries, study spaces, sports, social spaces)
• Do you feel supported by the university in terms of mental health, academic guidance and career support?
• How would you describe the sense of community at the university? Are there any suggestions you have to improve inclusivity and student engagement?
• What’s one thing you think the university could do to enhance the overall student experience for current and future students?
• Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
Amy will review these answers for the board and will be speaking to those looking to be involved.
• Monthly Monday Meals
• RAG Week 2: Monday 27 to Friday 31 January
• Union Council: Thursday 20 February

Hi, I’m Liv Jay and I am a singer/songwriter from Bucks, studying music performance and songwriting here at BNU!
I have always loved making music and it’s always been a big dream of mine to be part of and succeed in the industry. From a young age, starting with piano lessons, I have always enjoyed music which led to me wanting to be a part of the industry. My ambitions got more serious when I went to college and from there, I started to perform, record, mix and produce my own songs in readiness for releasing my material on various social media platforms. Nothing excites me more than a live performance. Since starting University in September 2023, I have taken part in many shows and jam nights, which are great fun for all us musicians who want to perform new music or even covers/ originals, either with bands or as a solo artist.
Over the past year amazing opportunities have come up for me and my music, such as singing live on Lounges TV (owned by Simon Cowell), being contacted by the BBC Introducing about possibly getting my song played on radio and this month, getting the opportunity of being interviewed on Marlow FM to discuss new songs that I’ve recently released and getting them played on that station.
My future goals and aspirations are to keep writing new songs, releasing this material and performing them to an audience who hopefully appreciate my music and understand what I feel when creating these songs in the studio.
On December 3 2024, I released a new house track called “Feel The Music”. This song is about how I’ve loved music since an early age. It was fun to record and I had the amazing LHAZE producing with me.
More recently, I’ve released an R’N’B track called “Say ahhh”. Its a collab with a talented artist called ‘Wandera’. Check it out!
I continue to write new songs, and I can’t wait for more people to hear the music I have got coming.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. It would mean a lot if you could support and join me on my music journey!

Here are QR codes to my artist platform and for my new songs. I have plenty more upcoming songs for 2025 that I am going to release.
This is just the start!

Christmas Volunteer Week 2024 brought together 59 of our student volunteers to make a difference in the community during the winter season. Volunteers got involved in Sewing Calico Dolls, Writing to Postpals, Designing Festive Decorations and Creating Anti-Anxiety Bracelets all of which they all got stuck in with an abundance of festive cheer and smiles.
We kick started the week sewing Calico Dolls donations for the Children’s Wards at Epsom and StHelier Hospitals. Calico Dolls are used as a multi medical resource to support children and healthcare professionals.
Mid week we wrote and decorated Postpals for Children facing serious illness and their siblings. Our volunteers showcased their creative talents in drawing famous cartoon characters and personalised themed cards.
Continuing with the creative flare came Decoration and Design making festive decorations for students, with some decorating the SU and University and others of our of fab volunteers also donating some of their designs to Hughenden Gardens Retirement Village.
We finished the week with a volunteering activity favourite of Anti-Anxiety Bracelets as a wellbeing tool for students which were distributed to the Students’ Union Help Yourself Shelves across the campuses.
Thank you to all of our brilliant volunteers who got involved with Christmas Volunteer Week!
Enjoyed Christmas Volunteer Week?! We have lots more Volunteering Opportunities upcoming in 2025!

Although December was a short month. We kept up the activities and fundraising.
Karate kicked off the month with Guess the Jellybeans in the Jar raising money for RAG, but the fundraising didn’t stop there the men’s Football teams stripped off and allowed themselves to be waxed for charity raising just over £100 for Wycombe Mind and Volleyball follow swiftly after getting students to draw and write all over themselves for a small donation.
Don’t forget RAG week is heading your way on the Monday 27 January.
Check out the What’s On page for more details.
We ran a food donation drive to support our local food bank The One Can Trust. Thank you to all students and staff who supported this initiative. The One Can Trust were very grateful for all our support in a time where there are so many variables in our lives. VPAB Wren delivered the donations before Christmas, just in time to be sent out to those in need.

Musical Theatre has always been a passion of mine and despite not taking the MT course, I was interested in pursuing one of my favourite hobbies at university and I’m delighted I found a bunch of talented, welcoming individuals to do that with!
I initially found starting university and adapting to a new routine quite difficult, however I can hands-down say that joining MT society in Freshers Week was one of the best decisions I made, making the transition into this new chapter of my life much easier. Not only did I make new friendships with ease, but I was able to strengthen those I’d already built with people from my course.
Our sessions on Monday evenings are definitely a highlight of my day. It’s lovely to know that after a heavy-timetabled day, there’s a slot to unwind and engage creatively with like-minded people. Alternating between acting, dance and
singing on a regular basis, it’s been fun and informative from the very beginning! It’s always been clear to me that the society provides its members with ample opportunities to demonstrate their talent and get involved with the local community. For example, towards the end of last term, MT performed at the High Wycombe Christmas Lights Switch-On and took part in providing vocals for a local pantomime. Despite unfortunately not being able to perform in either due to work commitments, I was still encouraged to attend rehearsals and gain experience of being in the rehearsal room. I had a wonderful time watching everybody broadcast their talents in a safe, welcoming environment and I look forward to being able to take part in our next performance.
As well as having a singing masterclass with Ben Sell from the hit drag-musical ‘Queenz’, we had a winter showcase to fundraise for the society in December
last year. I was told by a fellow student that “I was scared to perform but was met with a lot of support from the other members. MT really is a safe, supportive place where you can explore your interest with no judgement”. (Sara, 1st year Acting student).
Outside of rehearsing and performing, the club takes part in volunteering with the local community and hosts social nights every Wednesday. From pirates to supermarkets and tutus and tiaras, Musical Theatre society isn’t just a place to express your interest in the arts but to unwind, have fun with friends and get involved with our community and the people around us.
Joining Musical Theatre is something that I’ll forever be grateful to myself for doing,as it has allowed me to create new friendships as well as build my confidence as a performer and as a person, both things that I will always be thankful for. I look forward to what’s in store for the rest of the year!

As we begin 2025, we look ahead at Varsity 2025, our biggest sporting event of the year. From supporting your friends to setting foot on the pitch or court. Varsity has something for everyone.
But first, what is Varsity? Varsity is an annual sporting tradition for us here at Bucks and this will be our 11th year in which we have competed against the University of Roehampton. We play fixtures in an array of sports across multiple days. With Wednesday 12 March being the final day with most fixtures on this day. Each match earns the winning team one point, the losing team nil pois, and both teams half a point for drawing. At the end of the day, both universities points are tallied up, and the winner is awarded the Roe Buck trophy. Each year the two institutions take turns in hosting, this year, it is away at the University of Roehampton.
It’s not just the day that people have to look forward to, with Varsity Captain hustings where you get the chance to ask the nominees why they should be this year Varsity Captain and Varsity launch night which will include this year’s highly anticipated Varsity Video – You never know, if you were playing or spectating last year, then you may be in it donning the famous Bucks Red. Keep an eye out on the Students’ Union socials for more info about how to nominate, stand and how to be a part of Varsity 2025.
Last year we won Varsity 8.5 - 7.5 in what was an enthralling, tense finish, where Women’s volleyball won the final game 3-0 in emphatic fashion. Can we retain? You bet we can! And you can be the one who makes a difference and owns the moment.
Over the past 11 years, we have formed a healthy, well contested, nail-biting rivalry and this year will be no different. We look forward to seeing as many Bucks athletes pushing for Varsity greatness.

When I first joined Bucks New University, I was eager to become part of the Bucks men’s rugby club.
Having played rugby at a reasonably good level during sixth form for both my school and club, I wasn’t worried about the game itself; it was the social aspect that made me feel a bit anxious.
I had heard some not-so-great stories about rugby socials from other universities, so I approached my first social with caution. However, I quickly found myself embraced by a club that felt like family.
The socials soon became one of the highlights of my week. Although it took a
bit of time for me to find my footingduring training, the returning members were always there with words of encouragement, which made all the difference.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to meet people beyond the club, thanks to our committee organizing volunteering events like the Netball 4 RAG, the Smile Campaign, and the Movember party.
The coaching and training we’ve received from the Marlow coaches have been exceptional. I never expected to have access to Marlow RFC, which allowed me to participate in some training sessions with their second team.
While the results of our games haven’t been what I had hoped for, I’m optimistic about the rest of the season as injured players are starting to return.
I couldn’t have asked for more from this experience; the club has made my time at university a great one so far.

In the previous 2 months, Supremacy and Serenity have been training hard to prepare for our upcoming competition season.
Supremacy has been really focusing on their stunts lately, working on perfecting their technique and timing. They’ve been practicing a variety of stunts, from basic skills to throwing full releases in the air! Teamwork has been key, as they rely on each other to maintain balance and control during the stunts.
Serenity have been putting in a lot of effort to improve their technique and master their routine. They’ve been focusing on perfecting their movements, ensuring that each transition is smooth and synchronized. Regular practice sessions have allowed them to break down the choreography step by step, which helps everyone understand their parts better. Serenity is making great strides toward an impressive routine!
Each team have made excellent progress in their intense training period ready for our first competition in February!!!
Emma Storr (Supremacy Swan):
“Cheerleading has been a new experience for me this year and the Swans have provided a place to feel welcomed. Whether you have experience or not, you will be provided with guidance and support from the coaches and your teammates. There are lots of opportunities to look forward to, such as competitions and varsity, and it’s great to work towards as a team. I’ve enjoyed pushing my limits and gaining more confidence this term, and I look forward to seeing what the next term will bring with the Swans.”
Keira Brock (Serenity Swan):
“Joining BNU Swans Serenity this year has been such an amazing experience everyone is so welcoming and you feel so confident and happy while in the room, before tryouts I was nervous however when this came around I felt relaxed within the room and I didn’t feel as nervous. I am looking forward to doing competitions this season and also continuing growing with the group.”
