Perennially ranked among the nation’s elite, BU biomedical engineering department faculty have active research programs in biotechnology, bimolecular engineering, sensory systems, cardiopulmonary engineering, neuroscience, micro- and nanosystems, and biomechanics and biomaterials. With more than 30 primary faculty members, BU’s BME program is among the country’s largest and offers collaborative research opportunities with other engineering departments as well as at BU’s College of Arts & Sciences and School of Medicine. Rather than being required to join a particular lab during your first year, you can choose your laboratory home though a rotation system. Interdisciplinary PhD programs in BME and biomolecular pharmacology, and quantitative biology and physiology are available.
Located in the modern Photonics Center, ECE offers an array of research opportunities in electronic and photonic devices, information systems and computer systems engineering. The department encourages frequent research interaction and collaboration between researchers in different disciplines. ECE programs prepare future engineers for industry and academic careers in areas such as control systems, robotics, integrated circuit design, information processing, intelligent systems and software engineering. Graduate students conduct research in over two dozen laboratories and several research centers. An advanced computational environment with high-speed networks connecting systems that range from personal computers to scalable parallel supercomputers complements our research laboratories.
The Division of Materials Science & Engineering combines aspects of several areas of engineering to research and develop new applications in biomaterials, electronic and photonic materials, tissue engineering, energy for the environment and clean energy conversion. The program draws courses and researchers from the College of Engineering and science departments throughout Boston University. The demand for well-trained materials science researchers continues to grow. Training on the transfer of emerging research to the product marketplace prepares graduate students well for future careers in research, academia and industry.

The Division of Systems Engineering combines mathematical theory with systematic modeling and optimization. Systems engineering draws students and researchers committed to wide-ranging research in computational and physical systems. Transcending traditional boundaries, systems engineering encompasses many aspects of engineering. Taught by faculty throughout the College of Engineering, degree programs prepare students for careers in both systems research and professional careers like wireless communications, control and robotics, and computational and systems biology.
The Mechanical Engineering Department allows graduate students to conduct research in a specified area while interacting with colleagues in various disciplines. The strong alignment between academic coursework and research activities will give you, as a graduate student, the opportunity to apply classroom work to laboratory exploration. With expertise in acoustics, fluid mechanics, MEMS and NEMS, telecommunications, nanoelectronics, fuel cells, green manufacturing and service-system supply chains, cross-fertilizing research and collaborating on ideas is frequent. Coursework and research focus on engineering design, manufacturing processes and materials, and exposure to innovation in nanotechnology, mechatronic systems and various biomedical applications.
