Hays County Welcome to Buda and Hays County. Buda is my favorite not-so-small town in Texas. It is our sincere hope that you experience everything that Buda has to offer and that you’ll come back soon…and bring your friends! As a long time resident, I’ve had the opportunity to watch Buda grow. I have been blessed to see our small businesses continue to flourish. Whether you’re looking for antiques, boutique clothing, vintage items or a dozen roses, we hope you’ll take the time to stroll down Main Street and find your next treasure. And be sure to visit our neighbors at the chamber office and enjoy an old fashion root beer float at the soda fountain and drug store. We hope you’ll find respite in our quaint little town. That you’ll slow down, enjoy your stay, and adopt our way of life for a while. marc Goebler Chairman, BACC

The Story of Cornelia Brownrigg The Cornelia Trimble Story

estined for a watery grave; in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, Cornelia Brownrigg and pioneering passengers found themselves and their ship in the depths of despair. Captain Oliver McGraffey rescued the damsel in distress, along with other shipwrecked passengers. Like something straight out of a fairy tale, Captain McGaffey married Cornelia in Jefferson County, Texas, on June 9, 1849. Sadly, the fairy tale soon ended. Captain McGraffey found Texas less than satisfying and deserted Cornelia. He abandoned her pregnant and alone, to survive, in the wild frontier. She headed toward San Antonio to join her family. A few years after settling with her family, in Central Texas, Cornelia caught the eye of a prominent businessman, Andrew Norman Hopkins. Andrew owned 550 acres that stretched across Travis and Hays County, Texas.
On July 9, 1863 Orimsby loaded a double-barreled shotgun and went to the furniture shop and shot Hopkins on the right side, as he worked. Hopkins lived only a few hours leaving Cornelia widowed, and once again alone.
On July 9, 1863 Orimsby loaded a double-barreled shotgun and went to the furniture shop
He was a contractor and builder, who owned a furniture business on Old Pecan Street in Austin. Andrew Norman Hopkins was a gentleman. He could provide well for Cornelia and her young daughter. Cornelia married Andrew Hopkins on November 5, 1854 in Williamson County, Texas. She was once again a married woman. Andrew Hopkins had opened his furniture shop in a store previously owned by his friend Theodore Orimsby. Theodore left Austin

when he was called to Civil War duty. Upon his homecoming, he found Andrew Hopkins’ furniture shop where his Drug Store was once located.
A year later in 1864, Cornelia married David Trimble. Cornelia and David lived in Mountain City where she had two sons with David, and then he too, deserted her. Cornelia was no longer a destitute teenager left with nothing more than a child. Cornelia inherited property from her deceased second husband, Andrew Norman Hopkins. She was the owner of 550 acres, 17 miles south of downtown Austin.
Cornelia Trimble began to plat her property in 1880 and on April 1, 1881 she donated a portion of Hopkins land for a town site and railroad depot, which the Texas Land Company was seeking, for the International Great Northern Railroad. On April 7, 1881 Cornelia’s lots west of the railroad where sold at prices that ranged from $60 - $100, establishing the city of Du Pre, Texas. Six years later, Corneila’s town site took the name Buda, Texas.

Each school has traditional rallies, to prep for the rivalry. University of Texas students have the Hex Rally, and Texas A&M students have conducted the Aggie Bonfire before each game since 1907. The rivalry goes as far back as the famed Texas mascot, Bevo. According to folklore, four Aggies kidnapped the longhorn “BO” in 1917. They change his brand to display “13-0” the score of the 1915 A&M win over Texas. In retaliation, it is said, Texas changed the name to BEVO, but a small piece of Hays County had a hand in creating this rivalry. The dawn of the rivalry began with the birth of the first official Aggie Fan. Born

As much of an over achiever as his father, Edwin Kyle attended Texas A&M University in 1896, known at that time as Mechanical College of Texas. He graduated with honors in 1899, as class valedictorian. He then attended Cornell University. There he received a B.S. degree in agriculture in 1901 and an M.S. in 1902.
As professor of horticulture at Texas A&M University, Edwin Jackson became president of the General Athletics Association in 1904. He had a vision of an outstanding athletics program. To promote the program Edwin wanted an athletics field, but the school did not have the funds. Kyle improvised and personally purchased the materials to construct bleachers for 500 Aggies. He then donated a portion of his land, for agricultural use, and fenced it off for an athletics field. In November of 1904, the Texas A&M Board of Directors adopted Kyle’s idea of an athletics field. His fenced off agricultural land became the permanent setting of the Texas A&M football and baseball fields. Thus, giving the “Lone Star Showdown” a birthplace, Kyle Field, taking the name of its founder Edwin Kyle, from Kyle, Texas.

It opened before most of Texas State’s current students, and parents were born. In the 1950’s, the San Marcos River was home to a submarine theater and an amusement park name Aquarena Springs. The park attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to see its water shows. The shows consisted of swimming pigs and Aquamaids. Some of the shows

The San Marcos springs come from the Edwards Aquifer and lead directly into the San Marcos River creating an ecosystem many rare species call home. Although, Aquamaids no longer hold a residency there, the San Marcos River has moments when no shopping trip compares to the swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, tubing, or kayaking fun the San Marcos River has to offer.

ASK ANY KID NATURAL GAS HEATS BETTER. Next time you draw a bath, think about your hot water. If you use an electric water heater, consider a more efficient and cost-effective natural gas unit instead. They heat water twice as fast and only produce half the carbon emissions of an electric water heater.* So when it’s bath time, make sure natural gas is heating your water. It’ll feel good to know you’re not letting energy go down the drain.
The average household can save approximately $220 per year on their energy bill by replacing an electric water heater with a natural gas water heater.** *Source: Council for Responsible Energy **Source: U.S. Department of Energy

200-240 All out Texan
150-200 Almost Texan
90- 150 Wanna be Texan!
5- 80 Need to move!
You are an all out Texan, not only are you Texan you have lead the way in Texas style, fashion, and food. Keep it up you’re a trail blazer for all those wanna be’s. You have a Texas sized personality that shows in all you do!
Not a native! You are catching on to the lifestyle of Texans. This unique Texas atmosphere was not a culture shock for you and you fit in almost immediately. Keep up the blending-in and soon no one will even know you were not born here.
Envious of everything Texan, you have some learning to do! A big truck and a pair of boots won’t make you Texan, it’s a lifestyle. Get acclimated to the climate, get a tan, and start watching your local highschool football team and you’ll become more Texan with time.
Larger than life Texas and Texans do not leave room for proper an nunciation and fears of drown ing. You need to buy some Texas music and a pair of boots or get out while you still can. Fix’n and Y’all are in the Texan Dictionary—just ask a Texan.
