Catalogue Number 156 About the Cover of This Catalogue
The rings of a tree allow the dendrochronologist to accurately gauge a tree's history and life. In the same way, through lines of writing and text, a biography provides a window through which to gauge the life of the subject. The artistic and graphic composition of the catalogue cover is designed according to the Golden Ratio, a continual pattern which dictates growth throughout nature and includes the structure of the human body. -Cover design by Ari Weinkle

A Unique, Inscribed Presentation Copy of the First Edition The Writings of Thomas Jefferson - A Monument of Scholarship The Highly Important Collection by Paul Leicester Ford In the Publisher’s Best Binding - Ten Volumes - 1892-1899
Jefferson, Thomas. THE WRITINGS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON. Collected and Edited by Paul Leicester Ford. (New York and London: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1892-1899) 10 volumes. A UNIQUE, INSCRIBED COPY OF THE VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION and the Best Issuance of the collection. THIS UNIQUE COPY IS ONE OF ONLY A SMALL NUMBER LETTERED RATHER THAN NUMBERED AND IT IS MARKED AS “PRESENTATION COPY”. THE FIRST VOLUME IS INSCRIBED ON THE FREE-FLY BY THE EDITOR, PAUL LEICESTER FORD ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION, DECEMBER 13, 1892. It is presented to a family member. The provenance is of singular importance and the books continued to be passed down through the family until the end of the 1950’s, when they came into the possession of John Strohn Copley the publisher of the The San Diego Union Tribune and the San Diego Evening Tribune. The Letter-Press Edition of the Writings limited to only seven hundred fifty signed and numbered sets. With engravings and a vast profusion of illustrations throughout, including maps and facsimiles of Jefferson’s writings, of the Declaration of Independence and of other important papers. Tall, thick 8vo, in the publisher’s preferred binding of half black morocco over maroon cloth boards, one of the scarcest of the bindings issued on this already elusive set of Jefferson’s highly important writings. A fine set, very beautifully presented and in an excellent state of preservation. A very handsome, very well cared for set of this monumental work of historical scholarship. $12,500. A VERY IMPORTANT SET OF THE WORKS OF ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONAGES AND WRITER OF A NUMBER OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY. THIS IS THE RARE ISSUANCE OF THE WORKS IN PUBLISHER’S MOROCCO. The set, besides including the great breadth of Jefferson’s writing, includes also, copies of the Declaration of Independence, in the form of a facsimile of Jefferson’s written manuscript with the corrections of Franklin and Adams. The set is illustrated profusely with maps and portraits, facsimiles and other illustrations. Ford's edition of THE WRITINGS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON is still regarded as one of the monuments of American historical scholarship, setting the standard for documentary editing for half-a-century. Ford's edition remains valuable for its accuracy of transcription from original manuscripts and its careful annotation of the documents chosen for publication. The Ford edition appeared in two versions, a ten-volume edition published between 1892 and 1896 and a fourteenvolume limited numbered edition (known as the "Federal" edition) issued in 1904; other than the different breakdown of volumes, the contents of these editions are identical. Readers, however, have to take note of which edition is being used in a given scholarly work. This unique first edition copy was presented by Ford to members of his family on the day of publication, and it remained in the family until it passed into the hands of James Strohn Copley (1916, St. Johnsville, New York - 1973) publisher of The San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego Evening Tribune from 1947 until his death in 1973. Copley was also President of the Inter American Press Association (1969 - 1970). The University of San Diego has a library named in honour of Copley and his wife (the Helen K. and James S. Copley Library).

A Book that Would Change the World - First Edition The Most Influential Work in American Literature Uncle Tom’s Cabin - Harriet Beecher Stowe - PMM Stowe, Harriet Beecher. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, OR LIFE AMONG THE LOWLY (Boston: John P. Jewett and Company, 1852) 2 volumes. First edition, First issue with all points as called for by BAL. This copy with the 1852 ownership signature of noted Boston businessman and tailor James Tolman. With the six original steel-plate engravings and with title-pages illustrated with large vignettes. 8vo, publisher’s original textured brown cloth, BAL’s binding “A” with the spines gilt lettered and decorated in blind, upper covers decorated with gilt pictorial vignettes and with borders in blind, lower covers decorated with pictorial vignettes and borders in blind. x, 312; iv, 322, [2, blank] pp. A very pleasing and well preserved copy of this book. The first and early printings are notorious for being found in unusually poor condition due to fragility and use. Internally, this copy is especially fresh and clean and without the foxing or browning typically encountered, the original fragile cloth in pleasing condition with some very expert refurbishment to the spines. A very pleasing copy and a very handsome set. $10,500. RARE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, VERY SCARCE IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH. Arguably, the most influential work of American literature and unquestionably a milestone of 19th century world literature. The initial printing sold out immediately upon publication and the book went through continual reissue for years after its introduction. Nice copies of the first edition as with this copy have become increasingly difficult to find. It is said that for writing this extraordinary bestseller Ms. Stowe was paid only $300. For her the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an Evil affront to Humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of 19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the pro-slavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life. In either case, the impact of UNCLE TOM’S CABIN on the society of the United States of America was probably greater than any book published before or since. (617) 536-4433

There are here presented, the greatest poem of America in its most complete format, and volumes of the wonderful prose writings of Whitman including the inclusion of SPECIMEN DAYS and other significant works. Whitman’s LEAVES OF GRASS portrayed America at the crossroads between an old world, soon to be cast off, and the new world of our future present. With the publication of LEAVES OF GRASS in 1855, Whitman, the poet of democracy, ushered in a new era in American letters, describing specifically American experiences in a distinctly American idiom. From its first publication in 1855, he had complete confidence in the greatness of both the book and its author. One of the rare opportunities to acquire this comprehensive set from one of the greatest of American poets.
Henry David Thoreau - Walden - First Edition A Highlight of American Renaissance Thought Thoreau, Henry David. WALDEN, Or, Life In the Woods (Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1854) First edition, first state of the text, earliest state of the ads. Illustrated with the map of Walden Pond printed on a separate leaf and inserted at p. 306 8vo, publisher’s original brown cloth lettered in gilt and ruled in blind on spine, bordered and decorated in blind on all covers. Housed in a fold-over morocco backed case. 357, [8 ads (dated April 1854)]. A very nice, very handsome copy indeed, internally quite pleasing with a bit of the usual spotting typical to the paper of the period, the binding very expertly and unobtrusively refreshed at the spine panel. $12,950 HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF A SEMINAL WORK IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. WALDEN has taken its place as one of the most important pieces of American literature and a highlight of American thought. In attempting an experiment in simple living Thoreau became the embodiment of the American quest for the spiritual over the material; and his book, ostensibly a simple record of his experiment, has earned the reputation as a work of great philosophical import. Walden emphasizes the importance of solitude, contemplation, and closeness to nature in transcending the "desperate" existence that, he argues, is the lot of most people. The book is not a traditional autobiography, but combines autobiography with a social critique of contemporary Western culture's consumerist and materialist attitudes and its distance from and destruction of nature. That the book is not simply a criticism of society, but also an attempt to engage creatively with the better aspects of contemporary culture, is suggested both by Thoreau's proximity to Concord society and by his admiration for classical literature. There are signs of ambiguity, or an attempt to see an alternative side of something common. (617) 536-4433

A Pulitzer Prize Winner and Literary Masterpiece Abraham Lincoln by Carl Sandburg An Unusually Fine Set of the Signed, Limited First Edition [Lincoln, Abraham] Sandburg, Carl. A set as mint and unused. $2850. ONE OF THE GREAT HISTORICAL WORKS CONCERNING ABRAHAM LINCOLN, AND WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE. Carl Sandburg was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his Complete Poems (1950), and then again for his Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (1939). In a real sense, this is the definitive biography of Lincoln, illustrated with photographs and reproductions of paintings, drawings and sketches. Carl Sandburg felt a close tie to Abraham Lincoln because of similar childhood experiences. Sandburg’s and Lincoln’s youths had not been easy. Their understanding of the common man was mutual. Each in his own lifetime would think of himself as a common man, a struggler from among ordinary people, according to one historian. Sandburg put it this way: “There’s a certain level of human existence below which one must sometime have lived if one is to really know the ways of the masses.” Reviewers from all over the world called Sandburg’s book a classic. Sandburg, with a reputation as a labor advocate, gained favor with Republicans. After the first two volumes were published, William Randolph Hearst offered Sandburg a job with substantial pay and the Republican Party invited him to be the main speaker at the Lincoln Dinner. When Sandburg died in 1967, it was said of him what he had once said of Lincoln: “Now he belongs to the ages.”..Franchere Franchere, Carl Sandburg: Voice of the Peoples; Golden, Carl Sandburg; Hacker, Carl Sandburg; Zehnpfennig, Carl Sandburg: Poet and Patriot

First Edition in Original Dustjacket John Berryman’s Novel of Alcoholism 2 Berryman, John. RECOVERY [Foreword by Saul Bellow] (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1973) First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original red cloth lettered on the spine in gilt, with the original dustjacket. xiv, 254. A near fine copy only very lightly mellowed by time. FIRST EDITION of Berryman’s brilliant novel about, in his own words, “the disease called ‘alcoholism.” The novel features a thinly disguised autobiographical character in the form of one Jasper Stone, “an extremely bitter bearded poet”. Berryman began writing it in 1970 and had completed all but the final section of the first draft when he died in January of 1972. “Even unfinished, even without benefit of the intensive revisions and improvements he applied to all his work, it is so powerful that it had to be published.” - Publisher. RECOVERY is powerful, moving and a unique testament to courage and strength. $50.
Albert Beveridge - The Life of John Marshall One of the Great American Biographies 3 Beveridge, Albert J. THE LIFE OF JOHN MARSHALL (Boston: The Riverside Press for Houghton Mifflin, 1916-19) 4 volumes. A very early reissue of the first edition. With numerous illustrations, including color frontispieces in each volume. 8vo, publisher’s original ribbed green cloth, gilt lettered on the spines and upper covers. xxvi, 506; xviii, 594; xxii, 644; xviii, 668. Bibliography in each volume and General Index in Volume IV. A very handsome set, internally near as new with just very light age to the bindings, the cloth still nice and dark, the gilt bright, all sound and sturdy. AN IMPORTANT AND CLASSIC WORK. A brilliantly written life of John Marshall, 1755-1835, the second Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and a fascinating account of the early development of the nation. A standard work. Marshall’s court opinions helped lay the basis for American constitutional law while promoting nationalism and making the Supreme Court of the United States a center of power with the capability of overruling Congress. Previously, Marshall had been a leader of the Federalist Party in Virginia and served in the United States House of Representatives from 1799 to 1800. He was Secretary of State under President John Adams from 1800 to 1801. The longest-serving Chief Justice of the United States, Marshall dominated the Court for over three decades and played a significant role in the development of the American legal system. Marshall cemented the position of the American judiciary as an independent and influential branch of government. $225.

“Nothing perhaps in his pictorial art quite matches the aerial radiance and felicity of his best songs. But nothing in his poetry has the sustained grandeur of the Job engravings, or of a whole series of splendidly imagined designs.” Not only did Blake posses a sweeping poetic and visual imagination, but his technical range was also far beyond his contemporaries. “Were there no mystical ideas or original imagination to attract us to his work,” as Binyon said, “we could still admire the artist who, in a time when the fashionable academicians hardly seemed to know of the existence of any art but that of painting in oils, engraved his own designs, painted in watercolours and in distemper, invented two methods of etching in relief, revived (doubtless without consciousness of any predecessor) the “monotype,” engraved original woodcuts, and made at least one experiment in lithography.” “That William Blake was a great artist as well as one of the greatest poets of the English language is well known. What is not so widely know is that Blake found a means of combining both sides of his genius in what he called “Illuminated Printing.” Blake wrote out his poems with a surrounding design which often assumed the importance of an individual plate, etched each page and colored it by hand as and when he had a purchaser. Thus Blake, the poet of genius, was also a consummate craftsman, a poet who illustrated and printed all his great works, including the visionary prophetic books. In fact, Blake the poet, printer and prophet---precursor of both symbolism and surrealism” $3250.
“One of the Best Books in the World” First Edition of Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson 5 Boswell, James. THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON (London: by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791) 2 volumes. Boswell learned a great deal about the art of biography from his subject, and brought to his task boundless curiosity, persistence, and zest. Boswell had been collecting material for this work since his first interview with Johnson in 1763, and was confident that his kind of biography, “which gives not only a History of Johnson’s visible progress through the world, and of his publications, but a view of his mind in his letters and conversations, is the most perfect that can be conceived, and will be more of a Life than any work that has ever yet appeared.” Only 1750 copies of the first edition were printed. $9500.

The Best Biography of One of the Great Explorers Murray’s Account of the Life and Writings of James Bruce One of the Earliest British Explorers of the African Continent 8 [Bruce, James]; Murray, Alexander. ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF JAMES BRUCE of Kinnaird, Esq. F.R.S. Author of TRAVELS TO DISCOVER THE SOURCE OF THE NILE, In the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772, & 1773. (Edinburgh: Printed by George Ramsay and Company, for Archibald Constable and Company, 1808) First Edition. With 22 engraved plates including a portrait frontispiece of Bruce, and two large folding maps at the end of the volume. 4to, handsomely presented in a full calf binding of the period, the spine sometime skillfully restored to style, red morocco lettering piece gilt. xiii, 504,4 ads. pp + 22 engraved plates and maps. A fine, clean and handsome copy. The back handsomely accomplished to style. Only very minimal toning or mellowing, the binding very well preserved, inner hinges strengthened with fabric. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THE LIFE OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND GREATEST BRITISH EXPLORERS OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT. It was said of Bruce’s writings on Africa, “that few such monuments exist of the energy and enterprise of a single traveller” (DNB). “The result of his travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography” (Cox II, p. 389.) Bruce was one of the earliest westerners to search for the source of the Nile. In November of 1770 he reached the source of the Blue Nile, and though he acknowledged that the White Nile was the larger stream, he claimed that the Blue Nile was the Nile of the ancients and that he was thus the discoverer of its source. The account of his travels was written twelve years after his journey and without reference to his journals, which gave critics grounds for disbelief, but the substantial accuracy of the book has since been amply demonstrated. The collection of writings is a cornerstone to any collection of Africana, and it is considered one of the earliest and greatest illustrated works on the seminal discoveries to be made on the continent over a hundred year period. $1850.

Amidst the confusion Hale steered a middle course, rising in reputation, solicited by both parties.

As a lawyer and a judge, Hale believed he could best serve his country and benefit his countrymen by holding aloof from partisanship and its violent prejudices. It has been said, but without certainty, that Hale was engaged as counsel for the Earl of Strafford; he certainly acted for Archbishop Laud, Lord Maguire, Christopher Love, the Duke of Hamilton and others. It is also said that he was ready to plead on the side of Charles I. had that monarch submitted to the court. The parliament having gained the ascendancy, Hale signed the Solemn League and Covenant, and was a member of the famous Assembly of Divines at Westminster in 1644; but although he would undoubtedly have preferred a Presbyterian form of church government, he had no serious objection to the system of modified Episcopacy proposed by Usher. Consistently with his desire to remain neutral, Hale took the engagement to the Commonwealth as he had done to the king, and in 1653, already sergeant, he became a judge in the court of common pleas. Two years afterwards he sat in Cromwell’s parliament as one of the members for Gloucestershire. At the Restoration in 1660 Hale was very graciously received by Charles II, and in the same year was appointed Chief Baron of the Exchequer, and accepted, with extreme reluctance, the honour of knighthood. After holding the office of Chief Baron for eleven years he was raised to the higher dignity of Lord Chief Justice, which he held till February 1676. Gilbert Burnett was one of the great contemporary historians and biographers of his day. He was a popular preacher and was offered four Bishoprics before he was 29 years of age. These he refused and in 1674 was dismissed from the post of King’s Chaplain for remonstrating with Charles II for his profligacy. He was Chaplain to Mary when she was still Princess of Orange. He became Bishop of Salisbury in 1689 under William III. He published this account of Sir Matthew Hale only a few short years after Hale’s death. Ency. Britannica, 11th edition. $650.

THE VERY SCARCE ‘APOPHTHEGMATA AUREA, REGIA, CAROLINA’ INCLUDED WITH THE ‘EIKON BASILIKE’, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS BOOKS OF THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR AND A LANDMARK IN PRINTING AS PROPAGANDA. The EIKON BASILIKE is a purported spiritual autobiography attributed to King Charles I of England. It was published on February 9, 1649, ten days after the King was beheaded by Parliament in the aftermath of the English Civil War in 1649. Written in a simple, moving, and straightforward style in the form of a diary, the book combines prayers urging the forgiveness of Charles’s executioners with a justification of royalty and the King’s political and military program that led to the Civil War. It is by no means certain that Charles wrote the book. After the Restoration, John Gauden, bishop of Worcester, claimed to have written it. Scholars continue to disagree about the merits of his claim, though assuming that Gauden wrote it, he had access to Charles’s papers when he did so. Jeremy Taylor is also said to have had a hand in its writing, and is said to be the source of its title. Whoever wrote the Eikon Basilike, its author was an effective prose stylist, one who had partaken deeply of the solemn yet simple eloquence of Anglican piety as expressed in Cranmer’s Book of Common Prayer. The end result is an image of a steadfast monarch who, while admitting his weaknesses, declares the truth of his religious principles and the purity of his political motives, while trusting in God despite adversity. Charles’s chief weakness, it says, was in yielding to Parliament’s demands for the head of the Earl of Strafford; for this sin, Charles paid with his throne and his life. Its portrait of Charles as a martyr invited comparison of the King to Jesus. The pathos of this dramatic presentation made it a master stroke of Royalist propaganda. The book was quite popular despite official disapproval during the Protectorate and the Restoration. Because of the favourable impression the book gave of the King, Parliament commissioned John Milton to write a riposte to it, which he published under the title Eikonoklastes in 1649. Milton’s response sought to portray the image of Charles, and the absolute monarchy he aspired to, as idols, claiming a reverence due only to God, and therefore justly overthrown to preserve the law of God. This theological counterattack failed to dislodge the sentimental narrative of the EIKON itself from public esteem. The printing of the APOPHTHEGMATA from the EIKON so quickly following its initial publication is a testament to its widespread popularity and influence. The collection is believed to have been assembled by Dr. Hooker, an editor for Du-gard’s press and a vocal Royalist. The APOPHTHEGMATA is scarce, Worldcat list only 6 copies. The books and dust-jackets are all in very handsome and pleasing condition. FIRST EDITION COMPLETE OF ONE OF THE MOST MONUMENTAL HISTORICAL TASKS EVER UNDERTAKEN, RESULTING IN ONE OF THE GREAT HISTORICAL WORKS EVER PRODUCED. Randolph Churchill, who began this great work with Martin Gilbert in the early 1960’s had the exclusive use of Sir Winston’s letters and papers. The form in which is the work is cast is summed up in the phrase that Randolph Churchill quotes from Lockhart: “He shall be his own biographer.” And the authors present Churchill, a far as possible, through his own words. The first volume covers the years from Churchill’s birth to his return to England from an American lecture tour on the day of Queen Victoria’s funeral, in order to embark on his political career. The final volume spans Churchill’s life from the defeat of Germany in 1945 to his death nearly twenty years later. ‘No statesman of modern times--or indeed of any earlier age--has left such a wealth of personal letters, such a rich seam of private and public documentation, such vivid memories in the minds of those who worked closest to him or were at his side at both historic and amusing moments. Through these materials, assembled by Martin Gilbert during more than twenty years, one can trace Churchill’s moods, aims, actions, hopes and farsightedness. The many-sided nature of Churchill’s abilities, his enormous capacity for work when well into his seventies, his literary achievements, his optimism, his humanity, his humour, his belief in man’s capacity for self-improvement and survival, fill this volume with a rich tapestry of people and events, dominated not by the day-to-day struggle of politics and international conflicts but by an abiding sensitivity. Randolph Churchill died just after the second volume of this massive work was produced and Martin Gilbert continued the writing. He is one of Britain’s most distinguished historians. Following Randolph’s death in 1968 he was appointed the Official Biographer. During the twenty-five years spent on the biography, which reached completion in 1988, Mr. Gilbert wrote many other books on modern European history including AUSCHWITZ AND THE ALLIES, THE HOLOCAUST, and THE SECOND WORLD WAR as well as serving as editor of thirteen volumes of Churchill documents. The eight volume work offered here has been hailed as “ stupendous achievement...of immense and permanent value.” $2250.

The DiMaggio Albums A History in Pictures of Yankee “Number 5” One of the Greatest Players in Baseball History 30 DiMaggio, Joe. THE DIMAGGIO ALBUMS Selections from Public and Private Collections Celebrating the Baseball Career of Joe DiMaggio 1932 [through] 1951. Introduction And Commentaries By Joe DiMaggio. Compiled and Edited By Richard Whittingham (New York: G. P. Putnam’s sons, [1989]) 2 volumes. First edition, first printing. Profusely illustrated throughout in both colour and black and white with photographs and reproductions of news clips, ads, magazine covers, etc., etc. 4to, original blue-black cloth lettered on the upper covers and spines in gilt, in the original red cloth covered slipcase with gilt lettering on the spine and front and with a large colour photographic pastedown of DiMaggio at bat. 400, 401-800 pp. A fine copy, internally pristine and as new, the cloth with just a tad of very minor age evidence, the slipcase also very well preserved. FIRST EDITION OF THIS WONDERFUL BOOK ON DIMAGGIO and a fantastic collection on one of the greatest baseball stars of all time. Joe Dimaggio had a long career with the New York Yankees and obtained an uncommon level of celebrity both on and off the playing field. He was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, was a three-time MVP winner, and 13-time All-Star. He is the only player to be selected for the All-Star Game in every season he played. At the time of his retirement, he had the fifth-most career home runs (361) and sixth-highest slugging percentage (.579) in history. He is perhaps best known for his 56-game hitting streak (May 15–July 16, 1941), a record that still stands. Touted by sportswriters as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Shoeless Joe Jackson rolled into one, DiMaggio made his major league debut on May 3, 1936, batting ahead of Lou Gehrig. The Yankees had not been to the World Series since 1932, but, thanks in large part to their sensational rookie, they won the next four Fall Classics. In total, DiMaggio led the Yankees to nine titles in 13 years. $185.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF A LIFE HISTORY AT A PIVOTAL TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH CHURCH. In his capacity as archbishop. Chichele was as much a statesman, diplomat and lawyer as he was a leader of the church. He was present at the siege of Rouen, and the king committed to him personally the negotiations for the surrender of the city. He crowned Katherine, baptized Henry IV, presided at the trial of John Claydon and came into direct conflict with Pope Martin V. The struggle between them has been represented as one of a patriotic archbishop resisting the encroachments of the papacy on the Church of England. Chichele, by appointing a jubilee to be held at Canterbury in 1420, after the

manner of the Jubilee ordained by the Popes, threatened to divert the profits from pilgrims from Rome to Canterbury. Chichele also incurred the papal wrath by opposing the system of papal provision which diverted patronage from English to Italian hands, but the immediate occasion was to prevent the introduction of the bulls making Beaufort a cardinal. Chichele had been careful enough to obtain Papal provisions for himself, his pluralities, his bishopric and archbishopric. Wing D2430 $550.

The Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Benjamin Franklin An Elemental Part of Early Americana - Rare Imprint - 1818 39 Franklin, Benjamin (and William Temple Franklin). MEMOIRS OF THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, LL.D. F.R.S. &c. Minister Plenipotentiary from the United States of America at the Court of France, and for the Treaty of Peace and Independence with Great Britain, &c. Written by Himself, to a Late Period, and Continued to the Time of His Death by His Grandson... Now First Published From the Original Manuscript, Comprising the Private Correspondence and Public Negotiations of Dr. Franklin Together with the Whole of His Political, Philosophical, and Miscellaneous Works (Philadelphia: T. S. Manning, 1818) First edition, Manning imprint, same date as the Colburn imprint, with the complete three parts of the autobiography in one volume. Engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved titlepage by Duane, engraved Emblematic card, engraved plate of manuscript facsimile, fold-out 1782 Boston Chronicle facsimile. 8vo, original printer’s boards, sometime backed in tan cloth with a manuscript paper label on spine, with remnant of original printed paper label beneath, untrimmed and scarce such. xii, 519 pp. (misnumbered as noted by printer, and as called for). A very collectable copy, the scarce printer’s boards with some expected wear and backed in an unsophisticated manner, but the book is generally found, if at all, in much later bindings. The copy has some of the expected toning and foxing prone to all American books of the period. It remains however, as from the printer’s workbenches, with the original untrimmed edges, and is as close to original state as one could probably find. VERY SCARCE IMPRINT, RARER THEN THE LONDON IMPRINT AND THIS COPY IN PRINTER’S BOARDS AND UNTRIMMED. “From the poverty and obscurity in which I was born, and in which I passed my earliest years, I have raised myself to a state of affluence and some degree of celebrity in the world. As my constant good fortune has accompanied me even to an advanced period of my life, my posterity will perhaps be desirous of learning the means, which I employed, and which, thanks to Providence, so well succeeded with me.” - Franklin. (From a 1771 letter addressed from Benjamin to his son William.) This is an important piece of early Americana. Written in parts, the Autobiography remained unpublished during Franklin’s lifetime. In 1791, the first edition appeared, in French rather than English, as Mémoires de la Vie Privée de Benjamin Franklin, published in Paris. This translation of Part One only was based on a flawed transcript made of Franklin’s manuscript before he had revised it. This French translation was then retranslated into English in two London publications of 1793, and one of the London editions served as a basis for a retranslation into French in 1798 in an edition which also included a fragment of Part Two. The three parts of the Autobiography were first published together by Franklin’s grandson, William Temple Franklin, (as offered here) in 1818. It was published as Volume 1 of the “Memoirs and Writings” but was sold separately and is typically found alone as a single volume. W.T. Franklin’s text was the standard version of the Autobiography for half a century, until John Bigelow purchased the original manuscript in France and in 1868 published the most reliable text that had yet appeared, which also included the first English publication of a part Four. $1250.

A Great Psychoanalyst’s Professional Career Laid Open Sigmund Freud - An Autobiographical Study 42 Freud, Sigmund. AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STUDY (London: Hogarth Press and the Institute of Psycho-Analysis, 1946) Second Edition. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine. 137pp (one advertisement). A fine copy. The book in its entirety remains clean, crisp, and fresh. Text block is tight and straight. EDITED BY ERNEST JONES. “This work appeared originally in 1925 in volume iv. of Die Medizin der Gegenwart in Selbstdarstellungen (Leipzig: Felix Meiner), a collection of short studies by various members of the medical profession designed (as the title shows) to give a picture of the present state of medicine as revealed in the autobiographies of its leaders. The stress was thus laid by implication upon the professional rather than the personal histories of the contributors.” This is not to be confused with Freud’s prior “autobiographical studies,” as he states in the first chapter that this edition is based more on his professional work, rather than his personal experiences in the field. $45.

The work is genuinely that of the commander. As such, it is valuable in its scope, its plain and clear analysis and language, and its broad conclusions about the conduct of the war. “In the years following the war Grant would move into the political arena, even against his best judgment and would, with great public acclaim be elected President of United States for two full terms. RARE PRINTING OF THIS IMPORTANT ZANE GREY TITLE ISSUED IN THE FIRST YEAR OF PUBLICATION. One of Zane Grey’s best books, based on fact and about one of his own ancestors. Betty Zane (1759-1823) was a great heroine of the Revolutionary War on the West Virginia frontier. She would later become one of just a handful of brave women in the first wave of American pioneers that started west from the original thirteen states. She settled eventually in what is now called Bellaire, Ohio. Zane Grey, a direct ancestor of Betty Zane, could not find a publisher when he first wrote this novelized account, so he paid to have the book published in 1903 using his wife’s funds. Afterward, the book found a wide audience and has remained popular ever since. Due to the nature of the printing history, the first edition of this work is rare and valuable. Offered here is a very attractive and collectable substitute. $425.

A fictional memoir nearly finished by the great American author and not published till Hemingway’s centennial year. The publication sparked a literary controversy regarding how, and whether, an author’s work should be reworked and published after his death. Hemingway scholars generally consider it to be complex and a worthy addition to his canon of later fiction. $75.

institutional libraries, we know of no other copies currently on the market and auction records show only one copy since 1978. A concise contemporary history of King Henry IV, “le bon Roi Henri”, published within months of his death. Although he was regarded as a King of kindness, compassion, and good humor, and was popular with his people, he had been the target of several murder attempts. On the 14th of May in 1610, King Henry IV was assassinated in Paris by a fanatically passionate Catholic, François Ravaillac, who stabbed the king to death while he rode in his coach. Henry was buried at the Saint Denis Basilica. Henry’s widow, Marie de Médici, served as Regent to their 9-year-old son, Louis XIII, until 1617. Very little seems to be known of the author, Edmund Skory, other than the fact that he had a rather abusive wife. She is rumored to have once even thrown him out of a window. In his will he left a considerable sum to his wife’s servant, no doubt as a reward for years of service. $1450.

An unusually well preserved copy, pristine and unused. LIMITED EDITION, AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MODERN PRINTINGS of the Greek historian. This is very pleasing copy: the gilt is brilliant, the boards are not bowed as is usual, and the volume is clean throughout. In all likelihood this particular copy has never been read. Herodotus, the Greek historian was often called the “father of history” due to his systematic collection of sources and his attempt at intellectual rigor. His merits were “...the diligence with which he collected his materials, the candour and impartiality with which he has placed his facts before the reader, the absence of party bias and undue national vanity, and the breadth of his conception of the historian’s office.” His work represents the first significant Greek writing and covers the struggle between Asia and Europe, ending in the Persian invasion of Greece (490 to 479 BC). $1950.

A SCARCE FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT OF THE TUMULTUOUS YEARS OF THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR. Holles began his life as one of King Charles’ closest childhood friends and then began his political career as one of Charles’ most formable antagonist. During the years of the Civil War he came into violent antagonism with Cromwell and with the support of Essex and the Scottish endeavored to procure Cromwell’s impeachment in 1664. These actions were only the beginning of a high-and-low political career that would span over 50 years. He spent much of his adult life in exile, in fact the present work was written primarily in France. $795.

Irving’s History of Columbus and His Disciples The First Edition - Paris Issue - In English - 1928 62 Irving, Washington. A HISTORY OF THE LIFE AND VOYAGES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS (Paris: A. and W. Galignani, 1828) 4 volumes. First edition published in France. The book was published in England in the same year. Two large folding maps. 8vo, contemporary dark-blue half calf over marbled boards, the spines with red and black morocco lettering labels gilt, raised bands gilt ruled. xvi,472; viii, 517; viii, 434; vii, 513 pp. A handsome set with light aging or light rubbing at the tips, clean and very well preserved lettering labels refurbished at some time. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION, Paris printing. This was a scholarly but popular biography based primarily on the work of the Spanish historian Navarrete. Navarrete had published his work on Columbus, which contained a number of previously unknown and significant documents. However, Irving felt that “the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself...[and] the sight of disconnected papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and continued narrative.” In fact, he felt that nearly every account had been incomplete while many important documents and manuscripts ignored. Thus, he hoped to offer a more rigorous and yet accessible account. Written while Irving was a diplomatic attaché in Spain (1826-29), “it was the most painstaking effort of Irving’s life, and it won him election to the ‘Real Academia de la Historia’, the friendship of Navarrete, and a literary reputation in Spain where the work is still quoted respectfully” (DAB). The American edition, published the same year in three volumes, had only one map. BAL A testament to Irving’s often-neglected gifts as a historian. BAL 10123 , DNB $950.

the standard for documentary editing for half-a-century. Ford’s edition remains valuable for its accuracy of transcription from original manuscripts and its careful annotation of the documents chosen for publication. The Ford edition appeared in two versions, a ten-volume edition published between 1892 and 1896 and a fourteen-volume limited numbered edition (known as the “Federal” edition) issued in 1904; other than the different breakdown of volumes, the contents of these editions are identical. $12500.

Samuel Johnson - London - 1781 - Contemporary Calf The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets 65 Johnson, Samuel. THE LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT ENGLISH POETS; With Critical Observations on Their Works. (London: for C. Bathurst, et al, 1781) 4 volumes. The First London edition, first authorized edition, first separate edition. Portrait of Johnson by Joshua Reynolds as frontispiece in the first volume. 8vo, contemporary tree calf with gilt fillet lines surrounding the covers, the spines with plain calf backs. vii, 480; iii, 471; iii, 462; iii, 505. A very good, handsome and honest copy, rehinged incorporating the original spine panels and without labels, the text block clean and sound throughout. FIRST LONDON EDITION, FIRST AUTHORIZED EDITION, FIRST SEPARATE EDITION of this masterwork of literature. It took Johnson four years to write these lives, and much of their charm lies in the anecdotes and reminiscences which the author was able to provide. He spent much time in the company of men of letters and his retentive memory preserved many of the facts and criticisms which fell from their lips. The work, Johnson’s last great labor, was suggested by the Martins at Edinburgh. “The first conception of the booksellers was to begin with the works of Chaucer, but that project was too vast for them, and the first author in their edition was Cowley. The diminution of the scheme is not greatly to be regretted. The poets before Cowley were not so well know to Johnson, and he had no special information on their lives” (Courtney and Smith, p. 130). $1850.

Modern historians are unsure and opinions conflicting in how much accuracy or reliance can be placed on the text. The author wrote a number of other historical works. Wing J9347. $695.

includes a short essay by his youngest brother Teddy, who was only 12 years old at the time. Teddy had convinced his brother John and sister Eunice to allow him to submit a story about a sailing race in which he accompanied Joe and where Joe, “seized me by the pant and through me into the cold water.”. With all of the youngest Kennedy’s spelling and punctuation errors intact it is a very sweet and touching addition. With the death of Joe Kennedy in 1944 his brother John F. Kennedy assumed the responsibilities and stature expected of an eldest son in the Kennedy family. This change in family position no doubt affected him for the rest of his life, greatly influencing his career in public service and leading 15 years later to the White House. J. Maddalena: K. A nicely preserved copy with just a bit of general mellowing to the cloth. By this writing, ‘Lawrence’ was discarded and ‘Shaw’ was in place, as well as ‘T.E.’ Graves mentions other names that were also contemporaneous; ‘Ross’, chosen for its late placement in the alphabet like ‘Shaw’; ‘Aurens’ or ‘Lurens’ by the Arabs; and, ‘Emir Dinamit’, his nickname which meant Prince Dynamite. Old Auda, the fighting chief of the Howeitat, used to call him ‘The World’s Imp’. And most popularly, he was referred to as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, but he found ‘Lawrence’ to be too long especially for this subtitle. Graves cites the true source for Lawrence’s disatisfaction with his name as its failure at having any “proud family traditions for him.” $95.
The Letters of T.E. Lawrence A Fine Copy of the First Edition in Dustjacket - 1938 76 [Lawrence, T.E.; Wilson, J.M.] Garnett, David, editor. THE LETTERS OF T.E. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (London: Jonathan Cape, 1938) First edition. First state with “T.E.L” at p. 495 and “Baltic” at p. 182 16 photographs and illustrations including 4 maps of which two are folding. 8vo, publisher’s original fawn polished buckram, lettered in gilt on the spine, in publisher’s original printed dustjacket. 896 pp. A fine copy, the dustjacket is complete with minimal edge-wear primarily as evidence of shelving. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. The letters of T.E. Lawrence from 1906-1935, from early work in archaeology, through the Arab revolt, the writing of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and ending the year of his death in 1935. The ultimate aim of Garnett was to allow Lawrence to tell his own story, as much as possible. He has included Lawrence’s private letters as well as official ones to give a complete portrayal of his life. Garnett took over this project when E.M. Forster felt “he could not go on with it” and thus was aided by his notes. Lawrence’s interest in archaeology lasted from his childhood to the time of his death. These letters reflect this interest and his intellectual development over the years. Because Lawrence had many friends of diverse interest and background, his correspondence is complex and revealing. He was a very good correspondent and the substance of his writing “destroys the mystery of Larwence and establishes more firmly his titles to greatness--not only as a soldier and a writer--not because of what he did, but because of what he was.” [dustjacket] Included are letters to Lloyd George, Bernard Shaw, Lady Astor, E.M. Forster, Noel Coward, Yeats, and Churchill. O’Brien A202 $450.

paintings, drawings and sketches. Carl Sandburg felt a close tie to Abraham Lincoln because of similar childhood experiences. Life in their youth, for both Sandburg and Lincoln, had not been easy. Their understanding of the common man was mutual. Each in his own lifetime would think of himself as a common man, a struggler, and from among ordinary people. When Sandburg died in 1967, it was said of him what he had once said of Lincoln: “Now he belongs to the ages.”..Franchere Franchere, Carl Sandburg: Voice of the Peoples; Golden, Carl Sandburg; Hacker, Carl Sandburg; Zehnpfennig, Carl Sandburg: Poet and Patriot $295.

He was no child of fortune. He was the creation of an adversity that walked hand in hand with him from the cradle to the grave. In that struggle he found his strength. He too grew in stature and in wisdom. Out of an experience of sorrow and pain he gained the power to look into the heart of things.” $35.

The book is compiled from the works of Livingstone as well as several secondary authorities including Baker, Speke, Grant, and Barth. These volumes contain a detailed description of Livingstone’s last expedition, which began in Zanzibar in 1866 and ended with his death on the south shore of Lake Tanganyika in 1873. “The two main objects of the expedition were the suppression of slavery by means of civilizing influences, and the ascertainment of the watershed in the region between Nyasa and Tanganyika. At first Livingstone thought the Nile problem had been solved by Speke, Burton, and Baker, but the idea grew upon him that the Nile sources must be sought farther south, and his last journey became in the end a forlorn hope in search of the ‘fountains’ of Herodotus.” These journals were delivered into the hands of Livingstone’s friends whole and intact; no break occurs in the seven years of his mission from its beginning in Zanzibar to its tragic end in the village of Ilala. A staple for any collection of Africana. EB $1595.

The Last Journals of David Livingstone Profusely Illustrated Throughout 87 [Livingstone]; Waller, Horace. THE LAST JOURNALS OF DAVID LIVINGSTONE, In Central Africa. From Eighteen Hundred Sixty-five to his Death, Continued by a narrative of His Last Moments and Sufferings, obtained from His Faithful Servants Chuma and Susi (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1875) First Edition, American Issue. With frontispiece, 20 full page illustrations, 25 smaller illustrations, and two maps, 1 folding in pocket. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original olive green cloth over boards, gilt scene of Livingstone on the cover framed in blind, gilt lettered and with decorations and illustrations on the spine. 541, 4 ads. pp. A very nice, handsome copy, a touch of foxing occasional, but otherwise bright and clean. A FINE AND HANDSOME COPY OF THIS FIRST EDITION OF THE LAST JOURNALS OF LIVINGSTONE. A rare look at one of the great explorers of Africa, told first hand through his collected journals. This work contains a detailed description of Livingstone’s last expedition, which began in Zanzibar in 1866 and ended with his death on the south shore of Lake Tanganyika in 1873. From the introduction: “In the midst of the universal sorrow caused by the intelligence that Dr. Livingstone had lost his life at the farthest point to which he had penetrated in his search for the true sources of the Nile, a faint hope was indulged that some of his journals might survive the disaster: this hope, I rejoice to say, has been realized beyond the most sanguine expectations. It is due, in the first place, to his native attendants, whose faithfulness has placed his last writings at our disposal, and also to the reader, before he launches forth upon a series of travels and scientific geographic records of the most extraordinary character, to say that in the following narrative of seven years’ continuous work and new discovery no break whatever occurs.” A staple for any collection of Africana. $350.

Recollections of the Private Life of Napoleon A Court Insider’s Intimate Memoirs - 3 Vols - First Edition 95 [Napoleon]; Constant, [Louis Constant Wairy] Premier Valet de Chambre. RECOLLECTIONS OF THE PRIVATE LIFE OF NAPOLEON Translated by Walter Clark (New York: The Merriam Company, [1895]) 3 volumes. First edition in English. With 24 black and white plates, most being from contemporary portraits of Napoleon and members of his circle. 8vo, publisher’s original navy-blue cloth, the upper covers decorated in gilt and red featuring handsome pictorial images including, plumes and Napoleonic crests, and with gilt lettering within red lined fillet borders, the spines similarly decorated and lettered in red and gilt, t.e.g. 431, 323, 435 pp. A very attractive, handsome and fine set, internally near as pristine, the bindings with only very minor evidence of shelving. A beautiful set, especially well preserved. FIRST EDITION IN UNUSUALLY FINE CONDITION. An intimate history of the great French emperor written by his own personal valet. This is an in-depth firsthand account of Napoleon’s private life, his family and the people of his court. Though the book had originally been published in French in 1830, it had never been translated into English. Already scarce by the 1890s, Walter Clark managed, with much difficulty, to find a copy of one of the original editions, from which he made his translation. Constant’s account was bitterly assailed by both Prince Napoleon and Napoleon III, but there is actually no good reason to doubt its authenticity or genuineness. The work “paint[s] Caesar in undress... His foibles, his peculiarities, his vices, are here depicted without reserve. But so also are his kindness of heart, his vast intellect, his knowledge of men, his extraordinary energy, his public spirit. The shutters are taken down, and the workings of the mighty machinery are laid bare.” $295.

edition. SCARCE AND IMPORTANT. A BEAUTIFUL PRINTING, RICHLY ILUSTRATED, OF THOMAS NORTH’S CELEBRATED TRANSLATION OF PLUTARCH, WITH A HOST OF ADDED MATERIAL. In this monumental historical work, Plutarch relates the lives of the historically important Greeks and Romans of ancient times. His studies are revered as among the most important and beautiful of all classical writings. The author’s object is to bring out the moral character in each case, rather than to relate the political events of the time; in essence, at times he will distort the truth in order to exemplify virtue or vice. Nonetheless, he is as reliable as the sources he uses, and very valuable as a historical resource. Thomas North’s translation of Plutarch’s LIVES is one of the most famous. His prose considered by many to be “incomparable... [his] achievement in narrative prose is only less signal than Shakespeare’s in dramatic verse. I doubt if there are many pages which may rank with the last of North’s “Antonius” in the prose of any language...Of good English prose there is much, but of the world’s greatest books in great English prose there are not many. Here is one, worthy to stand with Malory’s Morte D’Arthur on either side of the English Bible” (George Wyndham, Essays in Romantic Literature). “There are few who, were the choice given them, would not rather read Plutarch in the noble English of North, than in the restrained and sometimes inexpressive Greek of Plutarch” (Charles Whibley, Cambridge History of English Lit). North’s Plutarch is also well-known as a primary source for the plots of Shakespeare’s classical plays and for numerous passages in the non-Roman ones, and he relied almost exclusively on it for the historical background of ancient Rome. It is likely that he used more than one edition of North’s translation--most probably the first, second, and third. A copy of the fourth is said to have been among his possessions at his death, but all of the plays in question were written before that edition was published in 1612. Each edition of North’s work until this point bears more and more life histories; in 1603 fifteen new lives were added of such figures as Hannibal, Philip of Macedon, Octavius Caesar, and Plutarch himself. This Nonesuch Press printing is beautifully executed on fine Arches paper, and illustrated in luxurious fashion with full-page plates by Poulton. $1250.
Kenneth Patchen--The Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer First Edition in Original Decorated Dustjacket 97 Patchen, Kenneth. THE MEMOIRS OF A SHY PORNOGRAPHER (London: Grey Walls Press, 1948) First edition. 8vo, blue cloth, lettered in silver on the spine in the publisher’s original pictorial dustjacket. 235 pp A very clean copy in its vividly colored dustjacket, jacket with some minor edgewear, else fine. “‘For his bewildered visionary quality, for the rich, abrupt confusion of his imagery, for a recurrent note of tenderness, and for a wide if vague human sympathy, Mr. Patchen deserves to be read.’” [Times Lit Supp, dustjacket] This is a satiric novel, experimental in form, reflecting his thoroughly modern style and debt to Freud, as well as the Surrealists. Patchen received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1939 and was considered one of the most exciting writers of his day. He was a widely published poet, an artist and a playwright. $295.

His mature work displays an empathy for peasants and laborers, and sometimes evidences his radical political leanings. He was a mentor to Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin and his example inspired many younger artists, including American Impressionist Lucy Bacon. $125.

While Scott may be best remembered for his period romances, such as IVANHOE, QUENTIN DURWARD, WAVERLY, or THE LADY OF THE LAKE, his nonfictional writings are extremely well regarded--in particular, this very influential LIFE OF NAPOLEON. The work represents an

important contemporary contribution to the study of France during the Napoleonic Era. Sir Walter Scott had the advantage of visiting the field of Waterloo, and of conversing with officers engaged in the battle--thus his narrative may be accepted as especially accurate. The British government had granted him free access to all archives dealing with Napoleon’s exile in St. Helena. The biography was originally planned to be complete in four volumes, but the immense amount of reading that Scott undertook soon saw its great expansion to the present nine volumes. In 1826 his publisher, Constable, fell into bankruptcy and Scott, whose affairs were intrinsically linked with those of Constable, was left with debts totaling £121,000. In May of the same year, his wife Charlotte died. In spite of these immensely difficult conditions, which took a heavy toll on the writer’s health, Scott produced this formidable and extraordinary work, and at an unusually great speed. During the same period of time Scott also managed to write WOODSTOCK and to begin work on the CHRONICLES OF THE CANONGATE. This work on Napoleon is still considered one of his greatest singular achievements and copies available in the original wrappers are especially elusive. $1850.
The Art of Georges Seurat Courthion’s Masterwork on the Great Impressionist 107 (Seurat) Courthion, Peter. GEORGES SEURAT (New York: Harry Abrams, Inc, n.d. (c. 1970’s)) First edition. 125 illustrations, 48 of them tipped in colour plates. Large 4to, blue-white linen lettered in gilt on the cover and spine, in the original pictorial dustjacket. 160. A fine bright and clean copy. Part of Abrams’ “Library of Great Painters Series”. Combining scholarly text with beautiful reproductions of the artist’s greatest work. “Seurat developed the technique of pointilism, applying paint to canvas by means of a myriad of tiny dots of color. When seen from a distance, these dots blend to create a marvelous effect of shimmering light and subtle color variations” Like many artists of the late 19th century, he rediscovered the beauty of clean lines and a sense of order after the excesses of the Victorian Age. Seurat’s work saw a mini revival in the 1980’s with the production of Steven Sondheim’s biographical musical “SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE”. $195.

VERY SCARCE IN THIS FINE CONDITION. An uncommon title in the Great War series (uniform with the MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT). A contemporary reviewer in the Atlantic Monthly said, “His book is such as our knowledge of him prepared us to expect, and it is a treat....His style is characteristic of the man. It is absolutely free from rhetorical ornament, and it does not hesitate to be colloquial in the extreme, but it is admirable in its clearness and directness.....he appends a concluding chapter on the military lessons of the war, which is full of knowledge, wisdom, and sound sense.” An important record of inestimable historical importance. $795.
The Life of Nelson - Robert Southey, Poet Laureate Rare Large Paper Copy of this Important Work The Best Short Biography in the Language 109 Southey, Robert. THE LIFE OF NELSON (London: for John Murray, 1813) 2 volumes. First edition, Rare large-paper copy. Portrait frontispiece by Hopwood, and with the handwriting facsimile plate. 8vo, full contemporary calf gilt, decorated in blind on both covers, with gilt decorations and lettering on the spine, elaborate gilt turn ins finely rendered, marbled endleaves, a.e.g. viii, 253, [1] ad; viii, 275, [5] ads. A handsome and attractive copy, quite fresh and clean with some expected light wear. SCARCE FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER ISSUE OF THIS ENDURING ACCOUNT OF NELSON’S LIFE. Lord Nelson was, and still is, one of the most revered historical personages by the English people. He was known for his courage and selflessness; a telling and famous example of his bravery was when he was once severely wounded in battle, the ship’s surgeon immediately sought to attend to Nelson’s wounds. However, Nelson commanded that his injured men be taken care of first and declared, “I will take my turn with my brave fellows!” Southey immortalized Nelson even further as well as distinguishing himself in 1813 when he published this LIFE OF NELSON, his greatest prose work, shortly after being named Poet Laureate. The book quickly established itself as perhaps the best short, straightforward biography in the language. According to Sir Humphrey Davy this biography was “an immortal monument raised by genius to valour.” The Cambridge History of English Literature says, “The scale saved the writer from his

own fatal fancy for quartos, and from the opportunities of prolixity and divigation which quartos bring with them; his own patriotism, in which he was the equal of Chatham or of Nelson himself, gave the necessary inspiration; his unwearied industry made him master of details even to the extent of avoiding any serious technical blunders; and those quaint flashes of the old Jacobism which have been noticed occur just often enough to prevent the book from having the air of a mere partisan pamphlet.” Southey intended that this little biography be carried around by sailors for information and inspiration. A handsome and scarce set. $2850.
The Early Years of Henry M. Stanley The Birth, Boyhood and Younger Days - London - 1895 By His “Childhood Playmate” - A Fine First Edition 110 [Stanley, Henry M.; Africana] George, Thomas. THE BIRTH, BOYHOOD AND YOUNGER DAYS OF HENRY M. STANLEY, The Celebrated Explorer; A South Wales Hero (London: Roxburghe Press, 1895) First edition. Illustrated with two half-tone plates, one which is a frontispiece of Stanley, three manuscript facsimiles. 8vo, in the original blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, an image of Stanley blocked in gilt and gilt lettering on the upper cover, black endpapers. xiii, 124, 34 ads. A fine copy with very minor bumping to the spine. SCARCE IN FIRST EDITION FORMAT. This book describes the early days of Henry M. Stanley, the explorer who “found Livingstone” and carried on his work of exploration and abolishment of the slave trade. The author claims to be a childhood playmate of Stanley, who he says was actually a native of Ysgar South Wales named Howell Jones. Despite the fact that it is now widely accepted that Stanley was born John Rowlands in Denbigh, North Wales, this fascinating little volume depicts a tale of what might have been, purportedly written with “the kind permission of Henry M. Stanley” [preface]. This is one of the many early “speculations” on the Stanley’s formative years, arising out of the hero-worship which surrounded him. Whether fiction or fact, this book is both an interesting and amusing commentary on Stanley’s life. $375.

In its private glimpses of the author-his concern for his sons, his hobbies, his passion for invention-this is autobiographical material of the first order. Not intended for publication and never revised in any way, the journal casts a flood of light on the author’s mind and on the nature of the creative process. “These letters are, in a sense, John Steinbeck’s testament.” - from Jacket. $225.

With ownership signature on titles and a brief manuscript note on the final text leaf of noted New York Attorney Thomas Fenton Taylor. A VERY HANDSOME SET. “As might be expected of anything which Mark Twain wrote, this autobiography is unlike any other ever written-as unconventional and unorthodox as its great author. Always, when the time came for him to go on with the dictation, he chose as his subject whatever was most interesting to him at the moment, regardless of chronological order. For he believed that a man’s thoughts, not his outward acts are his true history, which alone reveal him completely. “The resulting book is a stream of table-talk: anecdotes, humorous and serious; reminiscences of his mother, his daughter Susy, his boyhood days in Missouri; chronicles of his friendships with all manner of men, from General Grant and President Cleveland to his Irish coachman and the unfamed intimates of his vagabond youth; bold expressions of opinion on every sort of topic-all are here, full of the vigor and the humanity of their author, and forming an inexhaustible mine of entertainment, amusement, and delight.”- Original publisher’s jacket review. The Autobiography was dictated by Twain over several years with the stipulation that it be published only after his death. BAL 3537. $125.

Witness. (London: By R.I. to be sold by John Wright, 1650) Scarce first edition. With the rare portrait frontispiece and engraved titlepage. Small 8vo [132 by 80mm], full contemporary calf, sometime sympathetically and expertly rebacked to correctly marry the boards which are paneled in blind in ornate fashion with floral corner-pieces also in blind, edges with a double-ruled gilt fillet line, edges gilt tooled, the spine with double-ruled gilt raised bands and a red morocco label ruled and lettered in gilt. [x], 197 pp. A nice copy indeed, being well preserved and a complete copy of this scarce work, with light typical age mellowing. The binding is sturdy and still attractive. SCARCE FIRST EDITION WITH THE RARELY ENCOUNTERED PORTRAIT FRONTISPIECE. A SELDOM ENCOUNTERED CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT OF KING JAMES I WRITTEN BY A MEMBER OF HIS COURT. ONLY A SMALL HANDFUL OF COPIES HAVE APPEARED IN RECENT YEARS. The work has long been attributed to Anthony Weldon, due somewhat to its not overly flattering portrayal of the monarch and due to its publication within a few months of Weldon’s death. The justification for the criticism inherent in the book is usually presumed to be because of Weldon’s dismissal from the royal court. At first a popular courtier, Weldon wrote an assessment of the Scottish people which was far from positive and the former James VI of Scotland did not take kindly to it. While these attributions and assumptions have held for centuries there are nowadays opinions emanating from more modern scholarship which challenges both the authorship of the book and the story of Weldon’s dismissal from court. OCLC; DNB; Marshall and Kelsey. $1950.

The portrait, general title-page and a few leaves in the preface with some wear and soiling to the outer edge, antique binding handsome and solid but with some expected wear and mellowing. SCARCE FIRST EDITION of Walton’s last published major work and the last of his series of “Lives” which along with Sanderson included Dunne, Hooker, Herbert and Wotton. Walton’s notoriety as author of THE COMPLEAT ANGLER, (one the most famous books in the language and one of the best sporting and best “how to” books of all time) often overshadows the memory of these biographies, the last three of which written when Walton was quite elderly. In these works Walton expresses a unique view of time as a perceptual framework and a transient state of normal life. He stresses that these important figures must be viewed within their own and personal relationship to time, and to the times in which they lived. In doing so he evolved the art of writing “Lives” to something more closely relative to modern biographical scholarship then can be seen in the writings of his contemporaries. $650.
