But although those London booksellers may have had their initial doubts, the book was and still is one of Dickens’ most popular novels.

Norris, Frank. McTEAGUE A Story of San Francisco (New York: Doubleday and McClure Co., 1899) First edition, the first printing with “moment” as last word to page 106. 8vo, publisher’s original cloth decorated and lettered in white on the upper cover and spine. Internally quite fine with fresh, clean paper and no spotting, a copy still firm and tight, the binding very good with just a little rubbing at the bottom edge and the red of the spine mellowed down a bit as is almost always the case.

A VERY FRESH AND HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST ISSUE. The best type of novel, according to Norris, “proves something, draws conclusions from a whole congeries of forces, social tendencies, race impulses, devotes itself not to a study of men but of man.” In McTeague, with both romantic elements and occasional extravagances, he is considered to have achieved his idealistic purpose and to have presented a vivid, authentic portrayal of contemporary life in California.

RARE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, Arguably, the most influential work of American literature and unquestionably a milestone of 19th century world literature. The initial printing sold out immediately upon publication and the book went through continual reissue for years after its introduction. Nice copies of the first edition as with this copy have become increasingly difficult to find. For Harriet Beecher Stowe, the battle against slavery was a God-ordained crusade to cleanse the United States of an evil affront to humanity. In the emotion charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America this novel exploded like an atomic bomb. For those opposed to slavery it was a testament to all that was wrong in an evil system. To the proslavery forces it was considered a slanderous attack on an established way of life.

FIRST EDITION OF A VERY SCARCE TROLLOPE TITLE, ESPECIALLY SO IN ORIGINAL CLOTH. The novel takes place in the fictional parish of Bowick, in England, during the 1800s. The story of Dr. Whortle and his school is a perfect example of the interplay between society in general and the personal/public life of a person. Written toward the end of Trollope’s career, it feels a return to the days of Barset. Indeed, with a change of setting and a few returning characters, it could easily have been a seventh in the series.
