Charles Dickens’ Timeless Annual Favorite A Christmas Carol - Illustrated by Arthur Rackham Delightfully Illustrated Throughout in His Best Fashion [Rackham, illus.] Dickens, Charles. A CHRISTMAS CAROL (London and Philadelphia: William Heinemann and J. B. Lippincott Co., 1915) First edition of the holiday classic with Arthur Rackham’s illustrations, First Issue with the frontispiece tipped-in as called for and Heinemann on the spine panel. The colourplates with tissue-guards captioned in dark red/brown. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in black on the upper cover with a ringing Christmas bell motif and on the spine in black in a holly and berry motif. xi, 147 pp. A very nice copy indeed, the cloth is bright and unfaded with strong decoration and lettering, the edges are crisp with tight corners, the text very clean and fresh with the spotting to which the book is highly prone being only occasional and very mild, the plates in wonderful condition. $1250. SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN VERY PLEASING CONDITION. A shining example of what you get when a true masterpiece of literature is complemented by one of the world’s greatest book illustrators. An inspiring combination. Dickens writes of A Christmas Carol in his preface: “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book to raise the Ghost of an Idea which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their house pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.” Surely, the author would be pleased with the perennial delight his little Christmas tale has stirred in the hearts and imaginations of generations of readers. Originally, Rackham’s illustrated edition of Dickens’ classic was published during the war years (1915) and was quite well received. The artist successfully incorporated the ‘Phiz’ and Cruikshank styles into his own to create striking renditions of Victorian London with ample room to uniquely evoke ghostly fantasy images as well. His almost characterized depiction of Scrooge, features chiseled and grotesque, are as bone-chilling as his fantastic entourages of moaning ghouls. The muted, shadowed atmospheric tones so characteristically Rackham, support Dickens’ eerie tale wonderfully. Some examples of Rackham’s emerging special talent for silhouette are also included.

He wrote to one of his friends that he believed he had “written a tremendous book and knocked the ‘Carol’ out of the field. It will make a great uproar I have no doubt.” Of course, it did not exceed the CAROL in any way except in initial sales, but it is a charming tale nonetheless.

John Leech illustrated Dickens’ classic “Christmas Carol” with four etched plates and several woodcuts within the text. THE CHIMES was Dickens’ second installment in the “Christmas Books” series and his labors in creating THE CHIMES were “very arduous” in order to make it a worthy successor to A CHRISTMAS CAROL. THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH was third in Dickens’ Christmas Book Series. The title grew out of Dickens’ idea to begin a weekly periodical named “The Cricket”. It was extremely popular when issued. Within one year there had been twenty two editions printed. THE BATTLE OF LIFE was the fourth installment in Dickens’ series of Christmas Books. Dickens managed to find the time to complete the manuscript while working on DOMBEY AND SON in Switzerland and in December of 1846 the book was released, selling 23,000 copies in the first 24 hours. THE HAUNTED MAN AND THE GHOST’S BARGAIN was the last of Dickens’ popular Christmas books and one that returns to the themes that brought him such success with A CHRISTMAS CAROL--misery and wrongdoing, realization, redemption and peace as a man blighted by sorrow discovers the true value of his life and of those around him.

A VERY BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTION OF IRVING’S HOLIDAY MEMORIES ILLUSTRATED BY ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED ILLUSTRATOR’S OF HIS DAY. Randolph Caldecott was acknowledged as a major influence and inspiration by many of the 20th centuries greats, such as Potter, Shepard and Greenaway. His reputation is such that the American Library Associations annual award for outstanding children’s book illustrations is named The Caldecott in his honor. Washington Irving wrote this tale, and the other stories in THE SKETCH BOOK under the pseudonym of Geoffrey Grayon. Narrated in the first person, it was a series of stories that relate to the author’s travels in England. It was also his most successful work. This tale is replete with old English holiday traditions, many of which were already fading into memory during the time of Irving’s visit. In the author’s opening words, “There is nothing in England that exercises a more delightful spell over my imagination than the lingerings of the holiday customs and rural games of former times.” Irving does a fine job of describing these joyous occasions, and thus helped to preserve them for the generations to come. Here we find them all perfectly united in this attractively bound set. “Recognition came to Miss Austen slowly. But she is now firmly established as an English classic… Miss Austen had always her panegyrists among the best intellects-such as Coleridge, Tennyson,Macaulay, Scott, Sydney Smith, Disraeli and Archbishop Whitely, the last of whom may be said to have been her discoverer. Macaulay, whose adoration of Miss Austen’s genius was almost idolatrous, considered MANSFIELD PARK her greatest feat; but many critics give the palm to EMMA. Disraeli read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE seventeen times. Scott’s testimony is often quoted: ‘That young lady had a talent for describing the involvements, feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I have ever met with. The big bow-wow I can do myself like any one going; but the exquisite touch which renders commonplace things and characters interesting from the truth of the description and the sentiment is denied to me.’” - EB $2850.

This book represents Aubrey Beardsley’s first commissioned work, undertaken when he was not yet twenty. While working at an insurance office in London, Beardsley frequently visited the Jones and Evans bookshop in Cheapside, where he got to know Frederick Evans. Mr. Evans allowed the artist to trade drawings for books on occasion, and it was Evans who suggested to J. M. Dent that Beardsley should be the artist for Mr. Dent’s new edition of the Arthurian tales. A suggestion well made and one to which 20th century printing owes much. The commission, which came in 1892 was to “design and illustrate an ambitious edition of Malory’s ‘Le Morte d’Arthur’ which was intended to rival the Kelmscott Press books on their own ground… (E)lements beside the pale remnants of Pre-Raphaelitism were at work fertilizing (Beardsley’s) developing talent, and what was seen by its devisers as an emulation of Morris and Burne-Jones turned out in the execution more like a parody of them-a parody which annoyed Morris to the point at which he contemplated legal action. It may well not have been a deliberate parody: it is simply that already, willy-nilly, the ‘strong medieval decorative feeling’ of Morris was mixed, as Walter Crane noted, ‘with a curious weird Japanese-like spirit of diablerie and grotesque, as of an opium dream’.” Beardsley’s life was short, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 26. In those few years he managed however to leave a great and lasting artistic legacy and a fascinating personal history as well. $3250.
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen A Pleasing Version of the Classic Novel 4 [Brock, Illus.] Austen, Jane. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (London & New York: J.M. Dent & Sons and E.P. Dutton & Co., 1931) An early printing of this edition. 8vo, in the publisher’s original crimson cloth lettered and decorated on the spine in gilt. 336, 4, 8 pp. A very fine, very pleasing copy of this perennial favorite. A LOVELY ILLUSTRATED COPY OF JANE AUSTEN’S CLASSIC ROMANTIC COMEDY. This story of first impressions, society and manners is a timeless favorite. Charles Brock’s illustrations capture the characters, costume and atmosphere of the novel perfectly. The text is that of the third edition, considered the definitive edition and the last to be revised by the author herself. $95.
A Fine and Handsome Set in Morocco Gilt The Poetical Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Published in London and Illustrated with Engravings 5 Browning, Elizabeth Barrett. THE POETICAL WORKS (London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1889-1890) 6 volumes. With an engraved frontispiece in each volume (mostly portraits of Browning at various periods of her life) and a number of other full page engravings. 8vo, handsomely bound and signed by Estes & Lauriat in contemporary three-quarter crushed dark-green morocco over marbled boards, gilt lettered in two panels of the spines, the remaining four with a small gilt floral tool inlaid with red morocco, the raised bands of the spine nicely tooled in gilt, t.e.g. xviii, (2), 306; vi, 287; viii, 293; vi, 294; vi, 290; (iv), 393 pp. including general index and index to first lines. A fine set, the backs as usual, mellowed to a handsome and pleasing honey colour. A FINE SET, HANDSOMELY BOUND OF THE WRITINGS BY THIS GREAT POET OF 19TH CENTURY ENGLAND. This is the most complete edition of Browning’s works. It first appeared in 5 volumes in 1866, and was extended to 6 as here in 1889. It includes the preface to the first collected edition of 1844 and the advertisement to the 1856 edition. Also in this edition, appearing for the first time, is a 4-page prefatory note by Robert Browning correcting several biographical errors. An especially attractive set. Browning’s poetry was already critically and publically accepted while she was alive; for example, she was considered Wordsworth’s successor as poet laureate upon his death. However, Browning’s more advanced ideas may appeal to readers of this generation. Browning was sympathetic to the ideas of Mary Wollstonecraft, politically progressive in her views and in the literary realm, transformed poetic style and content. Thus, her work is by no means a mere curiosity but rather representative of the highest literary and intellectual achievements. $650.

The large format
and clear type make this copy a pleasure to read. Burns, a ploughman poet, to this day ranks high among the greatest poets of Great Britain. Whether employing his flawless 18th century English or his native Scots dialect, his writings speak to us eloquently. “His finest work springs from his own soil, from his compassionate and generous nature, and from the Scots’ poetic tradition... He employed the Scottish vernacular with great skill and range… he was in direct contact with its source and the themes of Scots rural life provided an inexhaustible field for poetic expression.”-Michael Stapleton. Burns’ most famous collection was a tremendous success and was reprinted many times during his lifetime. Just prior to its first publication in 1786 he was preparing to leave Scotland for Jamaica to escape several scandalous affairs involving a number of young ladies. With the money from the publishing of his Poems, he was able to remain in Scotland and build a new (though perhaps none the more chaste) life in Edinburgh. $495.

Cantos three and four appeared in 1816 and 1818 respectively. Upon its initial publication in 1812, Byron became instantly famous. “The effect was electric, his fame seemed to spring, like the palace of a fairy king, in a night.”-Moore. A fifth edition was issued later in the same year. “Just turned twenty-four he found himself famous, a great poet, a rising statesman. Society, which in spite of his rank had neglected him, was now at his feet.” -EB This volume, profusely illustrated by one of the best known steel-engravers in London, is a visual treat. Through the viewing of the illustrations, the reader is able to travel through Albania, Spain, Porugal, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland, and Italy enjoying through the lyrical voice of the poet and also through the evocative illustrations. $2500.
Lewis Carroll - Through the Looking Glass Early Illustrated Edition - M. L. Kirk and John Tenniel 11 Carroll, Lewis. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (New York: Frederick A Stokes, [c 1910]) With twelve full-page illustrations in colour by M. L. Kirk and fifty illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. 8vo, original beige-gray cloth, lettered in gilt and pictorially decorated in orange, yellow and black on the upper cover and spine. 271 pp. A lovely copy with only a minimal amount of age-wear or mellowing to cloth and inner hinges. A CHARMING EDITION FEATURING CHARMING COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS BY M L KIRK AND CLASSIC PICTURES BY JOHN TENNIEL. Tenniel’s illustrations are some of the most charming to ever appear in children’s literature. The Alice books have proven themselves to be among the most enduring classics of literature--for children or adults. ALICE’s importance might be gauged by the fact that it is one of only three books written for children (five, if one includes Aesop’s Fables and Froebel’s “Mutter- und Kose-Leider”) included in the “Printing and the Mind of Man” exhibition. ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND and its sequel, THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS, are “unique among ‘juveniles’ in appealing equally--if not more strongly --to adults. Written by an Oxford don, a clergyman, and a professional mathematician, they abound in characters--the White Knight, the Red Queen, the Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty--who are a part of everybody’s mental furniture. And the philosophic profundity of scores, if not hundreds, of these characters’ observations, long household words wherever English is spoken, gains mightily from the delicious fantasy of their setting” (PMM 354). $295.

Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” - A Very Handsome Set The Fine Motteux Translation in Lovely Period Bindings 13 Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de. THE HISTORY OF THE RENOWNED DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA. Translated By Several Hands: and Published By the Late Mr. Motteaux. Revised Anew From the Best Spanish Edition, by Mr. Ozell: With Explanatory Notes From Jarvis, Oudin, Sobino, Pinedo, Gregorio, The Royal Academy &c.&c. (Edinburgh: Alex. Lawrie and Co, 1803) 4 volumes. Early English Edition. Small 8vo, handsomely bound in contemporary polished calf, the spines with gilt bands separating compartments decorated with a central gilt decoration, lettered in gilt in one compartment, numbered in gilt in another, the cover borders roll tooled in gilt. (2), 262; 246; 276; 285. A very pleasing set. Handsome and very well preserved with only minor age evidence. A FINE AND HANDSOME SET OF THIS CLASSIC WORK. Motteux’s translation is one of the most famous of the period, and here, the book is presented in pleasing period bindings still preserved in unusually nice condition. There is a ‘Life of Cervantes’ preceding the text as well as the author’s preface. DON QUIXOTE ranks among the greatest literary works of Western Civilization. “What had begun as a simple satire on the tedious chivalric romances of the time broadened into a sweeping panorama of Spanish society. It was for this, the liveliness, and the gibes at the famous, which one it instant fame. Its larger claims, the subdued pathos, its universal humanity, were slower to be appreciated. But within months Don Quixote and Sancho Panza had become legendary… Don Quixote is one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times, and there are very few who have not at one time or another felt themselves to be Don Quixote confronting the windmills.” (PMM). The content of the notes is of significant interest to the reader as they have been taken from the most important and scholarly editions prepared by individual academicians and the Academy. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here
been included in English for the first time. Blackwood’s said of the translation that “This is, we think, out of all sight, the richest and the best... Motteux, the translator of Cervantes and Rabelais, possesses a native humour which no other translator that we ever met with has approached.” And William Prescott said that “The most popular versions in English are those of Motteux, Jarvis, and Smollett. Perhaps the first is the best of all. It was by a Frenchman who came over to England in the time of James the Second. It betrays nothing of its foreign parentage, however, while its rich and racy diction, and its quaint turns of expression, are admirably suited to convey a lively and very faithful image of the original. The slight tinge of antiquity, which belongs to the time, is not displeasing, and comports well with the tone of knightly dignity which distinguishes the hero.” Miscellanies, 1845 $1250.

Large folio, original bright red cloth covered boards lettered in gilt on the upper covers, the backs and corner pieces in red morocco, the spines ruled in blind on tall bands, with two black morocco lettering labels gilt ruled and boldly lettered, endpapers renewed. 29 pp preface and contents, plates 1-70; plates 71135; plates 136-175. A beautiful set of this rare and impressive collection of maps of the Civil War. The maps are all well preserved, fresh and bright, some expected minor wear to the cloth, otherwise the bindings are also fine. AN EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE ATLAS PRODUCED BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE TO ILLUSTRATE THE OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. A beautiful and fascinating accompaniment to the official records of the Civil War. Each massive plate is either an impressively detailed and informative map or contains multiple images providing detailed plans of cities, towns and fortresses, views, panoramas, uniforms, battlefields, bridges, engagements, lookouts, etc., etc. The maps and plans were primarily reproduced from those that had been drawn during the war by engineers, draftsmen, and sometimes even generals themselves for actual military use. Only a few maps, drawn later by cartographers, were added for historical purposes. Tactical and strategic maps indicate troop disposition; defense lines, redoubts, and fortifications of key sites are clearly shown. Terrain maps often contain picket positions, signal stations, and lines of march. Some were taken from what had been only rough sketches, some from cartographic masterpieces. All are informative and reveal the knowledge, or lack of knowledge, that both sides possessed about the terrain, and the strength and the position of opposing troops. The index to the maps refers to campaigns and battles, rivers, creeks, lakes, bays, islands, bridges, fords, ferries, landings, roads, railroads, mountains, towns, churches, forts, and much more. An indispensable source of information and imagery from the American Civil War. The atlas was not reprinted till 1958. Howes, C816; Rumsey Collection; Later editorial review; reviewer unknown; Library of Congress; U.S. National Archives. $9500.

The Voyages of Christopher Columbus First Edition of the Translation One of the Most Scholarly Histories of Columbus 16 [Columbus, Christopher]; Jane, Cecil. THE VOYAGES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS BEING THE JOURNALS OF HIS FIRST AND THIRD, AND THE LETTERS CONCERNING HIS FIRST AND LAST VOYAGES, TO WHICH IS ADDED THE ACCOUNT OF HIS SECOND VOYAGE WRITTEN BY ANDRES BERNALDEZ. Now newly Translated and Edited, with an Introduction and Notes by Cecil Jane. (London: The Argonaut Press, 1930) Limited edition, one of 1050 numbered copies, printed on fine Japanese Vellum. Illustrated with five maps and an original woodcut by William Monk on title page. 4to, publisher’s original grey cloth backed in white vellum gilt lettered, with a pictorial coat-of-arms design on the top right quadrant of the upper cover in 5 colours and gilt, edges uncut. (6), 347 pp., limitation leaf. A very handsome copy, well preserved, only light mellowing or evidence of age to the vellum, a touch of light background foxing to the endleaves. FIRST OF THE EDITION. A BEAUTIFUL PRINTING OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT TEXT. Includes Columbus’ journals from all four voyages as well as a section on the second voyage from Andrés Bernáldez. An important primary source for any study of Columbus. Cecil Jane notes that such a mythology has arisen around the figure of Columbus that “the process of distortion has so advanced that the real Columbus is more hidden from view than he was in the period.” Because so little is known about the discoverer, he retains a shroud of mystery and he played a part in this obfuscation through silence regarding his personal life and origins. Jane has done painstaking research to piece together Columbus’ words and actions. Of Columbus he writes, “it must be remembered that with all his faults, with all his errors, with all his shortcomings, he yet gave to Castile the greatest gift that she ever received, and that he laid the foundation of the most remarkable and the most enduring colonial dominion that the world has ever seen. Nor did he give to Castile or to Spain alone; all Europe is his debtor, all Europe and all the world beside. He bore across the Atlantic the language, the faith and the civilisation of the country of his adoption; he thereby rendered possible the creation of a spiritual empire which still endures. Of that spiritual empire, the members are those nations which to-day play so great a part in the world, which in the future must inevitably play a part even greater, and upon which, indeed, to no small extent, the destiny of mankind depends.” $450.
Rare First Edition of These Early English Poems Charles Cotton - Poems on Several Occasions - 1689 17 Cotton, Charles. POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS (London: printed for Thos. Basset, 1689) First edition. 8vo, bound in full contemporary calf. 729, advertisement pp. A desirable copy in this rare period binding. RARE FIRST EDITION ISSUED IN 1689. Including, on page 14, a poem dedicated to “my dear and most worthy friend,” Isaac Walton. Cotton and Walton co-authored what is perhaps the most famous fishing book of all time, entitled THE COMPLEAT ANGLER. Cotton’s reputation as a burlesque writer may account for the neglect his poems were met with in the 18th and 19th centuries, but their excellence was not, however, overlooked by good critics. Coleridge praises the purity and unaffectedness of his style in the ‘Biographia Literaria’, and Wordsworth gave a copious quotation from the ‘Ode to Winter’. The ‘Retirement’ is printed by Walton in the second part of the Compleat Angler. Over two hundred poems, sonnets, odes and epitaphs are printed here, including ‘On Tobacco’, a damning poem to the pernicious weed, a debauch of such a stinking kind. $2150.

Tall 8vo, very handsomely and beautifully bound in three-quarter burnt-red morocco by Bayntun early in the last century, the covers with fine French marbled paper over boards and morocco at the corners, the spines decorated with raised bands ruled in blind, gilt lettered and numbered in two compartments of each volume, marbled end-leaves, t.e.g. lii, 303; xi, 309; 297, (28) index pp., with all three half-titles as called for. A fine and very handsome set in excellent condition, essentially as pristine. The bindings and text-blocks are in wonderful condition, very finely preserved. RARE FIRST EDITION AND COMPLETE SET IN A VERY HANDSOME EARLY BAYNTUN BINDING. ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF ALL TIME. Cary’s famous translation has long been considered the first modern rendering of Dante’s timeless epic into English. While previous English translations prior to Cary’s had been accomplished in the 18th century, none were able to transfer into the English language, the beauty and richness of language for which Dante has forever been revered. It took Cary many years to make the complete translation. Indeed, the parts of the COMEDY were released over a number of years from 1805 on. Cary was influenced greatly by the Romantics and by

Coleridge in particular. Though the text was finished in mid-1812, Cary was unable to secure a publisher and was, after some years, obliged even with his very modest means to publish the work at his own expense. It at first excited little attention, but it came under great notice primarily because of the applause of Coleridge whom Cary had met while pacing the beach reading Homer to his son. ‘Sir,’ said Coleridge, attracted by the sound of the Greek, ‘yours is a face I should know. I am Samuel Taylor Coleridge.” “During the rest of the day, the wondrous stranger discoursed on Homer making young Cary ‘feel as one from whose eyes the scales were just removed,’ and inthe evening carried home the translation of Dante, of which he had never even heard. The next day he was able to repeat whole pages, and his winter course of lectures gave it celebrity. The new and first edition published by a general publisher was secured in 1819, and ever since,...it has remained the translation which, on Dante’s name being mentioned, occurs first to the mind.” Cary’s translation allowed the rediscovery of Dante’s masterpiece by the British of the Romantic Era and it was praised not only by Coleridge, but by Shelley, Byron and Wordworth as well. Copies of this, the first generally published edition of the book in its original three-decker format are extremely scarce. This is a still more scarce large paper copy. $1650.

He met weekly with the Dante Society, which he formed with Lowell and C.E. Norton. His translation of the greatest of all Italian literary figures is treasured to the present day and is largely credited for beginning a trend in bringing the world’s great literary treasures to American readers. Pulitzer Prize winning poet and Dante enthusiast James Merrill praised the rare “priceless fidelity” of Longfellow’s groundbreaking translation. This is a beautiful work by the great American poet and one of the few three volume presentations of Longfellow’s famed translation. It also includes Longfellows extensive notes and Illustrations from Voltaire, Ozanam, Stehelin, etc., and an index. $1650.

Salmonia - One of the Best Fishing Books of its Century A Work Ranking ‘High in the Scale of Angling Literature’ 26 [Fly-Fishing] An Angler [Davy, Sir Humphrey]. SALMONIA: Or Days of Fly Fishing. In a Series of Conversations. With Some Account of the Habits of Fishes Belonging to the Genus Salmo (London: John Murray, 1829) The second edition, improved with six plates not included in the first edition of the previous year. Illustrated with three woodcut plates of the author’s drawings of 11 real flies and their hooked imitations. Also with the 6 fine Finden steel-engraved scenic plates of British lakes and rivers which were not included in the first edition, and with engravings of fish throughout the text also from the author’s own studies. 8vo, in a handsome Bayntun-Riviere binding of three-quarter brown polished calf over cloth covered boards, the spines with gilt tooled devices of a fish with rod and net in five compartments separated by blind ruled raised bands, a seventh compartment with red morocco label gilt lettered and ruled, fine marbled endpapers. xiii, [2], 335 pp. A very attractive and desirable copy, the text is clean, fresh and solid, free of any foxing but for an unobtrusive hint of it on a few of the plates and not effecting the steel-engraved images, the binding in excellent state of preservation, very fine indeed. A CLASSIC WORK OF BRITISH ANGLING AND “A WORK OF GREAT SCIENTIFIC INTEREST AND HAPPILY POPULAR IN ITS TREATMENT” -DNB, 643. This edition contains six plates not included in the first edition, and like the first, was published anonymously. After the author’s death subsequent editions had his name attached. This is possibly due to Davy not wanting to detract from his more serious scientific endeavors. Davy is known for isolating a series of substances for the first time: potassium and sodium in 1807 and calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium and boron the following year, as well as discovering the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. He also made important discoveries relating to nitrous oxide and other gases, electromagnetism (his laboratory assistant Michael Faraday would later become rather well known in the field) and electrochemistry. The later led to significant improvements in agriculture, shipbuilding, battery science and even mining. He was knighted for his scientific achievements in 1812. In 1820 he was made president of the Royal Society. Davy wrote SALMONIA while taking a break from his scientific duties to recover from a stroke. It has come to be known as one of the most important angling books of the nineteenth century and now likely the best remembered publication of his career. In the words of Westwood and Satchell, “SALMONIA ranks high in the scale of angling literature.” DNB; Westwood and Satchell 77; Gingrich, Fishing in Print 85-96. $425.

A VERY PLEASING SET OF THIS FAMOUS EDITION, ILLUSTRATED BY ONE OF AMERICA’S GREATEST ARTISTS OF THE PERIOD. One of the quirkiest and most charming books in American literature. The Grolier Catalogue of One Hundred Influential American Books Printed Before 1900 calls it the “distillation of the intellectual and cultural life of New England at its Brahmin zenith.” “Autocrat” first appeared in serial form in the first issue of the Atlantic Monthly. It blends the discursive and whimsically comprehending talk of a boardinghouse sage with verses, both light and serious. As to the illustrator-- Pyle emphasized to his “art students the importance of total immersion, a kind of physical and mental projection into the picture until the artist senses that he has actually become the object. Only in this manner, Pyle emphasized, can the subject come to life in the painting. ‘Pictures are the creations of the imagination and not of technical facility...I subordinate that technical training entirely to the training of the imagination.’”-Susan Meyer. Books 1-12 of the ODYSSES were first printed in c.1614 and then reissued with books 13-24 in 1615. Homer’s hymns and verses were separately published, c.1624 as was the BATRACHOMYOMACHIA. As the translation progressed, these works were also published together, so the ILIADS could be found alone, with the first 12 books of the ODYSSES, with the complete ODYSSES and finally with the ILIADS, ODYSSES and CROWNE of minor poems all together. ansom Checklist 70; Poole. Charles Kendal Adams in his Manual of Historical Literature perhaps best describes this important work, “This work has enjoyed the rank of a classic in historical literature from the day of its completion to the present time. In point of clearness, elegance, and simplicity of style it has never been surpassed.” This edition features many corrections by the author. Hume’s corrections were not so much on factual matters dealing with dates or events but an attempt to soften or correct some seditious Whig sentiments that he had allowed to creep into it. Speaking of his first edition Hume admitted, “I am sensible that [his writings] were too full of those foolish English prejudices which all nations and all ages disavow.” The work is considered by many to be the first truly great history of England, and that although historically imperfect, of outstanding intellectual conception. It is not a simple chronicle of events but instead an attempt by Hume to trace the many steps leading to the state of England as it was in his present time. He views history not only as a chain of actions and reactions but delves as well into the material and intellectual state of the nation throughout the various points of the time period covered. $795.

Rt. Hon. William Willoughby Cole, 3rd Earl of Enniskillen, FRS, known by his courtesy title of Viscount Cole from 1807 to 1840, who was an Irish palaeontologist and Conservative Member of Parliament. viii, 473 pp; 490 pp; viii, 413 pp; vii, 489 pp. A handsome, attractive and well-preserved set. A little expected rubbing to the edges and extremities, internally very fresh and clean, all very solid. THE IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THIS GREAT TESTAMENT TO IRVING’S OFT’ NEGLECTED ABILITIES AS A HISTORIAN. This was a scholarly but popular biography based primarily on the work of the Spanish writer Navarrete. Navarrete had published his work on Columbus, which contained a number of previously unknown and significant documents. However, Irving felt that “the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself..[and] the sight of disconnected papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and continued narrative.” In fact, he felt that nearly every account had been incomplete while many important documents and manuscripts had been ignored. Thus, he hoped to offer a more rigorous and yet accessible account. Written while Irving was a diplomatic attaché in Spain (1826-29), “it was the most painstaking effort of Irving’s life, and it won him election to the ‘Real Academia de la Historia’, the friendship of Navarrete, and a literary reputation in Spain where the work is still quoted respectfully” (DAB). The American edition, published the same year in three volumes, had only one map. BAL 10123. $1000.

THE MAGNIFICENT AND BEST FACSIMILE OF THE KELMSCOTT CHAUCER, “the most famous book of the modern private press movement, and the culmination of William Morris’s endeavor” -(The Artist and the Book). This fine and full-size facsimile was printed for The Basilisk Press, London, by The John Roberts Press in Clerkenwell and completed on the 31st day of December, 1974. The blocks made by John Swain and Son, London. The paper specially made at Saint Cuthbert’s Mill at Wells in Somerset by The Inveresk Paper Group. The cloth printed by Liberty of London, and the binding executed by A.W. Lumsden in Edinburgh from designs by and under the direction of, Peter Guy. Much has been written of the famed Kelmscott Chaucer, considered by many to be the most beautiful book produced in the English language. “[F] rom first appearance, the Chaucer gained a name as the finest book since Gutenberg. It has held its place near the head of the polls ever since. The terms which critics used in the eighteen-nineties to welcome it simply show us what an impression Morris’s printing made upon late Victorian bookmen” (Colin Franklin, The Private Presses, p. 43). The Kelmscott Press produced forty-eight books in its brief life. Morris had toyed with the idea of a Shakespeare in three folio volumes; a suggestion for a King James version of the Bible was in his pending file; and preliminary work had begun on editions of Froissart and Malory, both of which would have formed a triumvirate with the Chaucer. But on October 3, 1896, Morris died, and for all intents and purposes the Kelmscott Press died with him, the Froissart and Malory unfinished. The Chaucer, regretfully, remained the only “titan” among Kelmscott books. Morris dedicated his life to poetry and the decorative arts, but he did not exhibit an active interest in the design and production of books until he was fifty-five years old. He died eight years later, but in that brief fragment of time he established a standard and prestige that still make him one of the most powerful and pervasive influences in book design in the English-speaking, English-reading world. $2850.

Carl Sandburg was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his Complete Poems (1950), and then again for his Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (1939). The Prairie Years’ covers Lincoln’s life from his birth to his first inauguration. Originally printed in two volumes, the author himself has this to say about this edition, “I first planned this book for one large volume. When completed, however, it was necessary for initial publication to issue it in two. It is [here] made available to a large part of the public I had in mind all the time.” The War Years covers the Civil War period until Lincoln’s death by assassination shortly after war’s end. In a real sense, this is the definitive biography of Lincoln, illustrated with photographs and reproductions of paintings, drawings and sketches. Carl Sandburg felt a close tie to Abraham Lincoln because of similar childhood experiences. Sandburg’s and Lincoln’s youths had not been easy. Their understanding of the common man was mutual. Each in his own lifetime would think of himself as a common man, a struggler from among ordinary people, according to one historian. Sandburg put it this way: “There’s a certain level of human existence below which one must sometime have lived if one is to really know the ways of the masses.” Reviewers from all over the world called Sandburg’s book a classic. Sandburg, with a reputation as a labor advocate, gained favor with Republicans. After the first two volumes were published, William Randolph Hearst offered Sandburg a job with substantial pay and the Republican Party invited him to be the main speaker at the Lincoln Dinner. When Sandburg died in 1967, it was said of him what he had once said of Lincoln: “Now he belongs to the ages.”.Franchere Franchere, Carl Sandburg: Voice of the Peoples; Golden, Carl Sandburg; Hacker, Carl Sandburg; Zehnpfennig, Carl Sandburg: Poet and Patriot $2250.

The print work was beautifully done by the Curwen Press on Grosvenor Chater’s Basingwerk parchment. Ravilious engraved most of these illustrations for books and other publications. His first commission, in 1926, was to illustrate a novel for Jonathan Cape. He went on to produce work both for large companies such as the Lanston Corporation and the smaller, less commercial “Fine Presses”, such as the Golden Cockerel, the Curwen Press and the Cresset Press. A handful of the engravings included here were never previously published. Ravilious’ career was cut tragically short when, while working as a War Artist, the RAF patrol he was flying on failed to return. After four days of searching, he and the plane’s four crewmen were declared lost in action. $1195.

FIRST EDITION WITH HALLIWELL’S INTRODUCTION AND ADDITIONS AND A BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED COPY. ‘In his preface the compiler calls himself a knight, and states that he was born and bred in England, of the town of St Albans. Although the book is real, it is widely believed that ‘Sir John Mandeville’ himself was not. Common theories point to a Frenchman by the name of Jehan a la Barbe (or other possibilities discussed below). The most recent scholarly work suggests that The Travels of Sir John Mandeville was “the work of Jan de Langhe, a Fleming who wrote in Latin under the name Johannes Longus and in French as Jean le Long.”] Jan de Langhe was born in Ypres early in the 1300s and by 1334 had become a Benedictine monk at the abbey of Saint-Bertin in Saint-Omer which was about 20 miles from Calais. After studying law at the University of Paris, de Langhe returned to the abbey and was elected abbot in 1365. He was a prolific writer and avid collector of travelogues, right up to his death in 1383. John de Mandeville crossed the sea on 1322; had traversed by way of Turkey (Asia Minor), Armenia the Little (Cilicia) and the Great, Tartary, Persia, Syria, Arabia, Egypt upper and lower, Libya, great part of Ethiopia, Chaldea, Amazonia, India the Less, the Greater and the Middle, and many countries about India; had often been to Jerusalem, and had written in Romance as more generally understood than Latin. In the body of the work, we hear that he had been at Paris and Constantinople; had served the Sultan of Egypt for a long time in his wars against the Bedouin, and had been offered, and declined, a princely marriage and a great estate on condition of renouncing Christianity, and had left Egypt under Sultan Melech Madabron (al-Muzaffar Sayf-ad-Din Hajji I who reigned in 1346-1347); had been at Mount Sinai, and had visited the Holy Land with letters under the great seal of the sultan, which gave him extraordinary facilities; had been in Russia, Livonia, Kraków, Lithuania, “en roialme daresten” (Dristra or Silistra in Bulgaria), and many other parts near Tartary, but not in Tartary itself; had drunk of the Well of Youth at Polombe (Quilon on the Malabar coast), and still seemed to feel the better for it; had taken astronomical observations on the way to Lamory (Sumatra), as well as in Brabant, Germany, Bohemia and still farther north; had been at an isle called Pathen in the Indian Ocean; had been at Cansay (Hangchow-fu) in China, and had served the emperor of China for fifteen months...had been through a haunted valley, which he places near “Milstorak” (i.e. Malasgird in Armenia); had been driven home against his will in 1357 by arthritic gout; and had written his book as a consolation for his “wretched rest”.’ Copies of this work are scarce in the marketplace. $750.

We see the great gardens, cathedrals and other landmarks of course, but equally important to the Menpes were the potato peelers and gossipers, fruits and markets and flowers, the bookseller and fish stalls and factories. This is one of Adam and Charles Black’s finest productions, well fitting to the city it illustrates. $925.
The Durbar - Signed, Limited Edition of 1000 Copies Mortimer & Dorothy Menpes Record a Great Moment of Empire With 100 Magnificent Plates in Full Colour 61 Menpes, Mortimer [illus] and Dorothy [text]. THE DURBAR (London: Adam & Charles Black, 1903) First Edition, LIMITED ISSUE DELUXE OF 1000 COPIES of this beautiful A & C Black title. This copy No.830 signed by Mortimer Menpes. With 100 wonderful plates in full colour by Mortimer Menpes with captioned tissue guards. 4to, in publisher’s deluxe binding of ivory cloth with elaborate decorations in Delhi style in gilt, red and blue on the upper cover and spine, the decoration featuring golden peacocks and a magnificent flowering tree, also lettered in gilt on both cover and spine, t.e.g. xii, 210 pp. An excellent copy, fine, bright and clean, the text and plates beautifully preserved, the ivory cloth in wonderful state of preservation with only the lightest hint of mellowing at the spine, an unusually well preserved and beautiful copy, internally as pristine and unused. FIRST EDITION DELUXE OF THIS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK OF ONE OF THE GREATEST CEREMONIAL PROCEEDINGS FROM THE AGE OF BRITISH IMPERIAL INDIA. The Menpes recorded in words and paintings their experiences from Camp Number One during the Coronation Durbar, held in Delhi to celebrate the accession of Edward VII to the British throne and title of Emperor of India. This ceremony was presided over by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. This was the second of the Delhi Durbars, which were great ceremonial gatherings held as demonstrations of loyalty to the crown. The first was held in 1877 for the proclamation of Queen Victoria as the first Empress of India. The second was far more splendid with increased ceremony and grandeur. The two full weeks of festivities were devised in meticulous detail by Lord Curzon. It was a dazzling display of pomp, power and split-second coordination. Neither its predecessor nor the Durbar held in 1911 could match the pageantry of Lord Curzon’s 1903 festivities. Mempes’ paintings include many portraits, military processionals, shows, events, marches and state functions. While very impressive in artist talent and style, they are also historically important artifacts of one of the grandest moments of the British Empire at its pinnacle. $895.

century. His name is often linked with Arthur Rackham, as they both produced illustrations for lavish gift books for children and adults which were of the highest quality and commercial success. Dulac, born a Frenchman, settled in England to build his artistic career. He quickly caught the eye of J.M Dent publishers and produced illustrations for an illustrated edition of Jane Eyre in 1905. But it was when he was discovered by Leicester Galleries that his career actually took off. They had been seeking another talented artist of the stature and appeal of Arthur Rackham for children’s gift book illustrations. At that time, children’s books were purchased by the wealthy as symbols of good taste and there was a huge market to be captured by a new, imaginative artist. Dulac was the perfect choice. $395.

The Complete Writings of William Blake The Fine Nonesuch Press Illustrated Edition 65 [Nonesuch Press] Blake, William. With pictorially decorated titlepage and colophon, and with reproductions after Blake within the text. 8vo, publisher’s original orange cloth over marbled boards gilt ruled, and gilt lettered on the spine, bound at Beccles in Suffolk. xv, 936, [1] pp. A very fine copy, very bright and beautifully preserved. A lovely example. THE NONESUCH BLAKE, designed by Francis Meynell, composed in the Ehrhardt types and printed by William Clowes and Sons on paper specially made by Robert Fletcher. The text was newly edited for this edition by Geoffrey Keynes. “Almost everything that was printed in the edition of 1925 has been included in the present text, there are a few interesting, if minor, additions, such as a recently discovered advertisement of A Descriptive Catalogue, 1809; some letter.; and Blake’s list of subjects for A History of England. More important additions than these are the two series of annotations written as marginalia in his copies of Bacon’s Essays, 1798, and of Boyd’s translation of Dante’s Inferno, 1785 (annotations about 1800.)” - from Editor’s Preface. In the three-volume ‘Writings of William Blake’ very little editing was done and variant readings were given, to maintain the integrity of the texts and provide a framework for scholarly analysis; in this edition Mr. Keynes felt a bit more at liberty to make such changes as the elimination of bracketed interpolations, or giving a more appealing arrangement to a poem Blake left in disarray. $225.

Plato - The Republic - Designed by Bruce Rogers Illustrated by Fritz Kredel - Signed by Rogers and Kredel Limited to Only 1200 Copies - First Edition 69 Plato; [Rogers, Bruce, Designer]; [Limited Editions Club]. THE REPUBLIC. Translated out of the Greek by Benjamin Jowett. (New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1944) 2 volumes. DESIGNED BY BRUCE ROGERS AND ILLUSTRATED WITH A SERIES OF WOOD-CUT MEDALLIONS HEADING EACH SECTION BY FRITZ KREDEL. Plato’s most important and certainly best-known dialogue, being an exposition of the principles on which an ideal state should be based. The concept of the Good, his notions of justice and virtue, and the Allegory of the Cave have influenced thinkers from Aristotle to Martin Luther King in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” What’s more, Plato’s ideas of a meritocracy based on education and skill reflect the ideals of the modern nation state. In the end, however, Plato/Socrates will be known for commanding us to question ourselves, to awaken ourselves from apathy and stand up for what we believe. As the translator Hary Spens remarks, the study of Plato’s principles “may give us the knowledge of ourselves, and raise the mind to the sublimest contemplations.” $250.

FIRST EDITION. BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED IN MILAN, ITALY. With 75 photographs and reproductions of 40 love letters written to the dancer Maria Cumani in the 1930’s. ‘Traditional literary critique divides Quasimodo’s work into two major periods: the hermetic period until World War II and the post-hermetic era until his death. Although these periods are distinct, they are to be seen as a single poetical quest. This quest or exploration for a unique language took him through various stages and various modalities of expression. As an intelligent and clever poet, Quasimodo used a hermetical, “closed” language to sketch recurring motifs like Sicily, religion and death. Subsequently, the translation of authors from Roman and Greek Antiquity enabled him to extend his linguistic toolkit. The disgust and sense of absurdity of World War II also had its impact on the poet’s language. This bitterness, however, faded in his late writings, and was replaced by the mature voice of an old poet reflecting upon his world. In the 1950s Quasimodo won the following awards: Premio San Babila (1950), Premio Etna-Taormina (1953), Premio Viareggio (1958) and, finally, the Nobel Prize for Literature (1959). In 1960 and 1967 he received honoris causa degrees from the Universities of Messina and Oxford, respectively. In his last years the poet made numerous voyages to Europe and America, giving public speeches and public lectures of his poems, which had been translated in several foreign languages. $175.
Arthur Rackham’s Illustrated Tour de Force - 1909 Gulliver’s Travels - The Limited and Signed First Edition 73 [Rackham, Arthur, illus.] Swift, Johnathan. Dent and Co., 1909) LIMITED SIGNED LARGE-PAPER ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION, one of only 750 numbered copies SIGNED by Arthur Rackham. This being one of the 600 copies for sale in England. With 13 impressive colour plates, two black and white illustrations and several line drawings as chapter heading or tail pieces, all by Arthur Rackham. 4to, publisher’s original ivory buckram decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on the front cover and the spine, t.e.g., others untrimmed, pictorially decorated endpapers with Rackham illustrations printed in gold, original rose silk ties. xv, 291pp. Internally a very good and fresh copy, the paper very clean and plates all very fine, the binding a bit shaken and neatly reinforced at the inside hinges both front and back, the ties lacking, the ivory cloth with the typical wear, somewhat dusty and mellowed. THE SCARCE SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, this being one of the copies reserved for sale in Great Britain. This fine deluxe issue included one additional colourplate not included in the trade issues. Rackham has created a very special printing of Jonathan Swift’s 18th century satire. In 1899 an edition of this book had been issued with Rackham’s early drawings and no colour plates. As his reputation grew, the publisher asked for additional drawings and paintings and issued this new version. Rackham created a fresh set of illustrations which employed high-contrast linear designs tinged with washes of subtle color. The result was a collection of powerful images with striking emotional contrasts, well-suited to the spectacular travels of Gulliver. Rackham was able to graphically depict Gulliver kneeling on the floor with the Lilliputian tailors gazing up at him while measuring him for a new suit. And in his painting, ‘Gulliver’s Combat With The Wasps’, he dramatically portrays a handful of huge wasps swirling menacingly around Gulliver’s teetering form. The trials, tribulations, and exploits of Gulliver’s travels are magnificently portrayed here by the master illustrator. $650.

The collection is an excellent introduction to traditional Irish Fairy Stories and includes: The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill, The Boyhood of Fionn, The Carl of the Drab Coat, Mongan’s Frenzy, and many more. Rackham brought forth another collection of dazzling and imaginative illustrations. The Dublin Independent wrote a warm review of Rackham’s Irish Fairy Tales: “We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarized us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape

Roberts made a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout, he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches. On his return to Britain, Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce these lavishly illustrated plates. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments, with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1. $400.
With the Very Beautiful Illustrations of W. Heath Robinson First Edition - Rudyard Kipling - A Song of the English 78 [Robinson, W. Heath, illus.]; Kipling, Rudyard. A SONG OF THE ENGLISH (London: Hodder and Stougton, [1909]) First edition. With 30 color plates tipped-in within ornamental borders, and with black and white drawings on almost every page, all by W. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK BY RUDYARD KIPLING. THE W. HEATH ROBINSON ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SUPERB BY ANY MEASURE. The trade edition of this volume was issued to benefit the “Daily Telegraph” National Bands Fund, and includes the text of a speech given by Kipling on the subject: “From the lowest point of view, a few drums and fifes in a battalion are worth five extra miles on a route march.” Robinson’s highly sensuous illustrations perfectly complement Kipling’s poems of British seafaring around the world. The grand poem, SONG OF THE ENGLISH is followed by six subsidiary poems likely composed while the Kiplings were living in Vermont. The theme underlying much of this collection is that the English are the Chosen under the Lord. This is one of Kipling’s earliest verses specifically setting out his vision of the British Empire, and the duties which it imposes on the English people. His definition of ‘the English’ is wide, certainly embracing the people of the overseas Empire, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, but arguably also the Americans among whom he lived in the years working on the collection. $750.

A Visit to the Roycrofters Community - 1907 With Vintage Photos and Laid in Ephemera The Book of the Roycrofters - First Edition - Very Pleasing 81 [Roycrofters] Farrar, Francis, and Abigail. THE BOOK OF THE ROYCROFTERS ([East Aurora, NY.: By the Roycrofters at their shop, 1907]) First edition. With Roycrofters printed envelope laid-in. With a beautifully designed two-colour rose motif title-page, board cover, final leaf and large opening initial all designed by Dard Hunter, also with 22 tipped in black and white photographs of the Roycroft compound on heavy handmade stock with red printed captions and frames. Small folio (9 x 7 in.), original printed paper-covered boards backed in tan cloth. 17pp text plus photo-plates. A very pleasing copy, the stock used for the plates causing the usual offsetting on the facing pages of text stock, otherwise fine and very clean, the binding with very light age evidence, but a beautifully preserved copy nevertheless. FIRST EDITION. A WONDERFUL WORK ON THE ROYCROFT ARTS AND CRAFTS COMMUNITY. The photographs of the community are especially interesting and show us the Roycroft Shop, Bindery, inn, rooms, blacksmith, furniture shop, etc. The community was founded in 1895 by Elbert Hubbard, a wealthy businessman who happened to meet William Morris while on a trip to England and hoped to duplicate in America much of what Morris had created. The Roycroft community produced some of the finest hand-crafted furniture, books, lamps and metal work of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The community reflected the Movement’s ideals of art and craftsmanship as instruments of social reform in its organization as well as in its products. The high quality and unique artistry of the Roycroft creations made them very popular. But it was the business acumen and charismatic personality of its founder, Elbert Hubbard, that made Roycroft one of the most successful artistic enterprises of the Arts and Crafts era. Hubbard edited and published two magazines, ‘The Philistine’ and ‘The Fra’. An envelope from the magazines’ advertising department is laid into this book. The book, like both of those publications, was probably used primarily as a fundraising tool for the community. $395.

Bullen, who wished to produce beautiful editions of Shakespeare’s works-- set, printed and bound in the famed author’s home town of Stratford-Upon-Avon. The press expanded significantly over the years and printed many wonderful editions by a plethora of writers. The books were printed for A.H. Bullen and F. Sidgwick at the press, in the house of Julius Shaw the poet’s friend and one of the witnesses to his will. The text with essays by H.C. Beeching, Robert Bridges, Henry Davey, E.K. Chambers, J.J. Colin Franklin, writing in THE PRIVATE PRESSES, says that in the years after the death of A. H. Bullen (the Press’s founder), the Shakespeare Head Press “became the most mature and sophisticated of the private presses, producing some works in the grand manner which are a great pleasure to read and examine now” (p. 147). This set indeed is “in the grand manner,” beautifully printed on fine paper, and very handsomely bound and presented. This is a very pleasing binding from the period before Bayntun and Riviere were joined as a bookbinding concern. Such bindings are rarely seen in the marketplace preceding as they do, those of the joined firms. $6500.

Arthur Szyk’s Largest and Most Majestic Illuminated Masterpiece The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America The Scarce Broadside Printing in Full Colour 90 [Szyk, Arthur, Artist]. THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA [Fine Art Print, The Historic Work to Celebrate Szyk’s Adoptive Home of America.] (New Canaan, CT.: Julia Szyk, 1953) The second and posthumous printing of Szyk’s patriotic masterpiece authorized by his wife Julia. Beautifully done in the style of a medieval manuscript but with more modern themes and imagery. The document with which the fledgling United States proclaimed its independence from Great Britain, this illumination features a portrait of George Washington, scenes of the Revolutionary War, and national symbols such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the bald eagle. The complete text of the Declaration of Independence is framed by iconic elements excerpted from the great seals and flags of the U.S. states and territories: 41 along the top and right, 13 others adjacent to the names of the Declaration’s signers. The Image measures 19 inches x 15 1/2 inches on paper 25 inches x 19 inches. In very fine condition. THE SCARCE PRINTING OF SZYK’S LARGEST AND MOST MAJESTIC ILLUMINATION. Polish born Jewish artist Arthur Szyk originally gained popularity through his World War II caricatures, in which he often depicted the leaders of the Axis powers. After the war, he devoted himself to political issues in his beloved new home of America. Szyk’s profound respect for America, its history, and its people culminate in this majestic illumination of one of the nation’s most important documents. The original artwork of The Declaration was dedicated in New Canaan, Connecticut, in a festive celebration on July 4, 1950; it is the largest of all Szyk’s illuminations and was one of his last works before his death in 1951. Alongside the signers of the Declaration Szyk provides a visual history of the United States flag. The left column shows three flags said to have flown during the Revolutionary War. The predominantly blue one is called the Bunker Hill flag, whose upper left corner contains symbols both of new country (the pine tree) and of Great Britain (St. George’s cross). The pine tree appears also on the flag below with the phrase “An Appeal to Heaven.” Adopted in 1775, this banner was designed by George Washington’s secretary, Colonel Joseph Reed. The pine tree is prominent because it was a longtime symbol of New England, and sacred to the Native Americans. “An Appeal to Heaven” is a reference to John Locke’s political writings which defended the right to revolt. The Gadsden flag (designed by General Christopher Gadsden) features a rattlesnake and the words “Don’t Tread On Me.” The rattlesnake, like the bald eagle, is unique to America and representative in that its rattles, like the U.S. states, come together to sound warning when disturbed and while it will not attack unless provoked, its strike is deadly. The right column is topped by the Continental Colors flag (also known as the Grand Union flag). Considered the first U.S. flag bearing resemblance to the Stars and Stripes, it combines Great Britain’s Union Jack in the upper left with the stripes of the United States, and was in use from December 1775 to June 1777. Below is the famous Betsy Ross flag, in use from June 1777 through May 1795. Last, but not least, is the nation’s flag in its contemporary form. It is said that this work and his Proclamation on the Statehood of Israel hung side by side in the Szyk household until his death in 1951. $350.
Proclamation of the Establishment of the State of Israel The Commemorative Lithograph by Arthur Szyk 91 [Szyk, Arthur, Artist]. PROCLAMATION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL [Fine Art Print, The Historic Lithograph to Commemorate Jewish Statehood.] (New Canaan, CT.: Arthur Szyk, 1948) An original lithograph by the artist, Arthur Szyk, plate signed “Arthur Szyk, New Canaan, 1948.” Beautifully done in the style of a medieval manuscript but with modern themes and imagery. The renowned historic proclamation is illuminated in numerous colours and exquisite details. The central Hebrew text of the Declaration is surrounded by miniature vignettes telling of both Jewish history and the newborn State of Israel. The images include Moses, with his brother Aaron the High Priest and the warrior Hur; Ezekiel, the prophet who called for restoration to the Land; skulls and bones as a reminder of the Holocaust; King David, the first King of the Jewish People in Jerusalem; and the symbols of the twelve tribes of Israel; the present day is represented with the pioneer (chalutz) who sows the land on the right and the soldier who defends the land on the left. The image measures 14 inches x 18 1/2 inches on paper 16 1/2 inches x 21 inches, accompanied by a copy of the original English

translation as issued at the time of printing. The lithograph and English translation all are in very fine condition. THE SCARCE LITHOGRAPHIC PRODUCTION OF SZYK’S FAMOUS COMMEMORATIVE OF THE PROCLAMATION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL. Polish born Jewish artist Arthur Szyk originally gained popularity through his World War II caricatures, in which he often depicted the leaders of the Axis powers. After the war, he devoted himself to political issues, such as supporting the creation of Israel. He first visited Israel in 1914 from his native Poland and after permanently resettling in America became the leading activist artist in America to help the cause of bringing about the State of Israel. In her memoirs, Julia Szyk records that on the day the independence of the Jewish state was declared, her husband wept and then sat down to begin this masterwork, devoting more than six months to its completion, the lithographs were printed within the first year of Statehood. It is said that this work and his completed Declaration of Independence of the United States hung side by side in the Szyk household until his death in 1951. $350.

The ‘Idylls’ were based on the Arthurian legends, and retell the story of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him in blank verse. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls of Theocritus. ‘Idylls of the King’ is often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in Britain during the mid-Victorian era. $195.
Henry David Thoreau - Walden - First Edition A Highlight of American Renaissance Thought A Clean and Handsome Copy of an Iconic Work - 1854 93 Thoreau, Henry David. WALDEN, Or, Life In the Woods (Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1854) First edition, first state of the text, September ads (the various ads are of “no known bibliographical significance” -BAL, 20106). Illustrated with the map of Walden Pond printed on a separate leaf and inserted at p. 307 and with title vignette of the cabin in the woods. 8vo, publisher’s original brown cloth lettered in gilt and ruled in blind on spine, bordered and decorated in blind on all covers. 357, [8 ads} pp. A handsome copy of this important work, internally very pleasing and very fresh and essentially free of the browning which so often effects this title, the binding with gentle and expert restoration at the head and tail of the spine and with a little touching up of the tips but with brighter gilt then is typically seen and with sturdy, solid hinges.. HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF A SEMINAL WORK IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. WALDEN IS AN ICONIC BOOK and it has taken its place as one of the greatest books of American literature and a highlight of American thought. In attempting an experiment in simple living Thoreau became the embodiment of the American quest for the spiritual over the material; and his book, ostensibly a simple record of his experiment, has earned the reputation as a work of great philosophical import. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Walden is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and manual for self-reliance. By immersing himself in nature, Thoreau hoped to gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection. Simple living and self-sufficiency were Thoreau’s other goals, and the whole project was inspired by transcendentalist philosophy, a central theme of the American Romantic Period. As Thoreau made clear in his book, his cabin was not in the wilderness, but at the edge of town, only about two miles from his family home. $9500.

Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass The Fine Limited Folio Edition - A Beautiful Printing 94 Whitman, Walt. LEAVES OF GRASS (Mount Vernon, NY: The Peter Pauper Press, n.d.) A fine and bright copy essentially as pristine and mint internally, the binding in excellent condition, only the slipcase shows some light wear. An especially pleasing copy. A BEAUTIFUL PRINTING OF THIS CORNERSTONE WORK IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. This very attractive edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, arguably the greatest work of poetry by an American author contains the complete poems following the arrangement of the edition of 1891-1892. Hanna’s powerful charcoal-style illustrations in burnt umber are both a pleasing and a moving addition to this great work of poetry. The Peter Pauper Press had great influence on the Fine Press Movement in America. Their works are an excellent combination of quality type, printing, artwork and materials. This production of Whitman’s great work is a truly impressively designed printing and may well be the finest achievement of the Press. This edition of LEAVES OF GRASS contains the final revisions of Whitman’s body of poems--he died shortly before the release of the first issue in 1892 ---and has been the format for most standard editions since. Whitman’s LEAVES OF GRASS portrayed America at the crossroads between an old world, soon to be caste off, and the new world of our future present. “Always the champion of the common man, Whitman is both the poet and the prophet of democracy. The whole of LEAVES OF GRASS is imbued with the spirit of brotherhood and a pride in the democracy of the young American nation. In a sense, it is America’s second Declaration of Independence: that of 1776 was political, this of 1855 intellectual. ...The poems are saturated ‘with a vehemence of pride and audacity of freedom necessary to loosen the mind of still-to-be-formed America from the folds, the superstitions, and all the long, tenacious, and stifling anti-democratic authorities of Asiatic and European past’. To the young nation, only just becoming aware of an individual literary identity distinct from its European origins, Whitman’s message and his outspoken confidence came at a decisive moment. “LEAVES OF GRASS was Whitman’s favorite child. From the time of its original publication until the year of his death, he continued revising and enlarging it. If (his) reputation has fluctuated over the years and his position among, if indeed not at the head of, the list of great American poets was not assured until some time after his death, there was never any doubt of the matter in his own mind. ‘I know I am deathless’, he wrote. ‘Whether I come to my own today or in ten thousand or ten million years, I can cheerfully take it now, or with equal cheerfulness I can wait.’ Time has vindicated his conviction.” PMM Myerson C89 $1250.

Macgregor and the Whittington Press have again joined talents to produce a book that can stand proudly beside the Fine Press books of decades long past. These lovingly hand-printed pages capture Ms. Macgregor’s impressions of Whittington, the home of the Whittington Press and Macgregor’s occupation. She began working at the press in 1972 as a compositor and wood-engraver but has since also ventured into the art of pochoir. Wood engravings by Miriam MacGregor highlight the greatest of intricacies. Cats and nature and the varied aspects of country life are favored subjects, where workers are often captured mid-task and one can almost hear the village bustling with life and activity. The text is set in 12 point Bell and was printed at Whittington on fine Zerkall mould-made paper. $950.
