URBAN DESIGN

KAASMARKT The kaasmarkt is a public square of approximately 60m x 80m, in the historical heart of Leiden. It lies just outside of the core shopping area. Currently the kaasmarkt is used as a parking lot. The assignment was to create a design, which would bring the kaasmarkt back to life and sustain the great value for Leiden. I bring these aspects back within my concept: The kaasmarkt as a musical source, in which I gave the old typical school building a new destination as musical pop museum. This fits within the museum image that Leiden already has. From my class I was the only one chosen to present my design for the municipality of Leiden.

MAP The historical building is most important in my design and this should be shown. To achieve this, the building is equipped with a glass faรงade, that creates an attractive public space, which connects the entrance of the museum and the historical canal.

VISION DINTELOORD Dinteloord is a little village in the county of North-Brabant, over the centuries as a result of land reclamation the village lost its relationship with the water. My assignment was to restore the relationship with the water and to create a vision for an extension for 500 homes.

VISION MAP SFEERBEELDEN

In my vision the village is connected on two sides with the water. On the east side where my urban extension is located between the village heart and the port of Dinteloord. On the north-west side I used existing farmyards to give them a new destination for living. New courtyards will be built, these courtyards are designed with traditional principals but at the same time have a modern architecture. The courtyards are located in a wild nature landscape where Scottish highlanders graze the lands.

TOOLBOX TOOLBOX SFEERBEELDEN To design the courtyards in a traditional way, To design the courtyards in a traditional way, I have researched the use of courtyards and I have researched the use of courtyards and created a toolbox in which design principals created a toolbox in which design principals are stated for a farm courtyard. ALMERE Almere is formed in the seventies which means it has a very short history. Because of land reclamation of the IJselmeer, Almere is the first city to be built on ‘new land’. The assignment was to research the city Almere on current problems and bottlenecks and chances. With this information to create a vision that resolves these issues. This vision I translated to an urban design plan.

VISON In Almere there is a high percentage of unemployment and school drop-outs, also 30% off all office building is empty, as a result Almere has a bad reputation. These problems I hope to resolve with the Floriade (flower exhibition) that will be held in 2022, to broaden this over all of Almere and to make Almere the ‘most green innovative city of the world’. With help of the water canals visitors can visit all the different locations of the Floriade. These developments would attract more companies, which would resolve the vacancy of office buildings and unemployment.

MAP What first was an anonymous business park, is now a green innovation campus, where business, the Floriade and education come together. Because of this development the vacancy rate on the business park will be resolved. In the heart of the business park a number of buildings are demolished to make space for the floriade pavilion, this pushes up the quality of the campus to a higher level. The pavilion stands with its feet in the water. On the north end where the smaller buildings are, start-up companies are housed.

PRINCIPALS On the site there is a lot of water, this water is used as constructed wetlands threw this all companies can make use off a grey water circuit. To make a sustainable plan the companies on the campus use shared facilities as much as possible.

ACHTER EMER Achter Emer is a part of agriculture in the north of Breda. The assignment was to create an attractive living environment, I did this with my concept: Naturally hillock living.

MAP In my urban plan I worked out a branch, consisting of two peninsulas. I wanted to create an urban environment that on the east side had a strong relationship with the water, and the west side would be mainly located in the green nature.

OFF THE FLOOR I made this bike rack as a tribute to my father. I refurbished my dad’s old frame which brought extra value to it. That’s why i didn’t want to leave it outside. The rack enables me to store it inside, as a functional decoration.
