thoroughbred stallions As many know, the first generation of Budenny horses were a Don mare crossed with a Thoroughbred stallion. So the breed was laid at the beginning of the last century and then purposeful work was carried out with it. Gradually, a certain breed type was identified and consolidated Budenny horses were obtained. A consolidate is one that has no other breeds in at least three generations. One of the tasks of using Thoroughbred stallions was to improve the agility of the Budenny breed. Earlier, on the tracks of the hippodrome, consolidated Budennies and half-breds (from Thoroughbred stallions) ran in separate races and the prizes of the consolidates were much higher. At the moment, the influx of Thoroughbred stallions is not particularly relevant and should occur in moderation. Outcross stallions should have an appropriate conformation that does not diminish the breed type of the Budenny or Don mares. As an example, I want to show some very successful Thoroughbred stallions in order to contribute to a better understanding of the stallions represented at our main stud farms; these are perfectly suitable in type for Budenny mares, as well as having produced interesting children, showing themselves on the racetrack and in sport. Oland was used at First Cavalry Army Stud Farm, Lorid at Zimovnikovskii Stud (and at the moment belongs to First Cavalry Army Stud), Fotarij—S.M. Budennyi Stud, Avilor—Tselina Stud, and finally Manchester at Donskoi Stud. The children of these stallions differ in intra-breed type for the Budenny breed.

arabian stallions Now let's talk about the influx of Arabian blood. In the formation of the Don breed, the following horse types were used: Persian, Karabakh, and Turkish horses, which the Cossacks brought back from their travels. Arabian horses are not used on a regular basis. But in the 50-60’s several Arabian stallions were used in the breeding of half-bred horses for sport performance. In the Don and Budenny breed, it was Surf, Pomeranets, Topol and at Zimovnikovskii Stud—the stallion Lopushok. After using these stallions in the Don and Budenny breed for many years, the Arabian blood did not flow. At the end of the 90’s, the use of Arabian stallions was again attempted to improve the quality of movement and to give it the Eastern intra-breed type. Since 1999, the Paragraf has been used at S.M. Budennyi Stud, and for 1 year (2003) he was lent to Stepnoi Stud. And then he worked again at S.M. Budennyi until 2005. Palisandr was used from 2005-2006, and Sibiriak from 2005 to 2007; Argon was used from 1991-1998, and Ting from 20022008. At Yulovsky Stud (now known as Tselina Stud), the Don stallion Govoruna was used to impart the Eastern intra-breed type to the Budenny breed. The use of Arabian stallions was essentially a short-term step and did not remain a permanent practice at the stud farms, as it produced no worthy results. The quality of the movement did not change upon their arrival, but the growth and body size decreased, which was not the desired result. 6

akhal-teke stallions In the formation of the Don breed, the Akhal-Teke breed did not participate purposefully. And as an improvement, it was not used. The use of AkhalTekes began at the SEC “Chagorta" Kalmykiya. The Akhal-Teke stallion Gerlik was used in the breeding program of this farm. Thus began an experiment on the influx of Akhal-Teke blood into the Don and Budenny horse breeds. For 1 year in 1998 it was used in Budenny horse breeding (2 offspring), and from 2000 to 2004—at large on the steppe. In the future, this "fashion" caught on at S.M. Budennyi Stud, where the Akhal-Teke stallion Dar was used in their breeding program from 1999 2005 g, which produced a lot of colorful foals. And at the Zimovnikovskii Stud, the Akhal-Teke stallion Funai worked for several years from 2003 to 2006. As with the addition of Arabian blood, the influx of Akhal-Teke did not produce the desired results and the practice was discontinued.
