Season Preview THE NEW ERA OF UB SOCCER BEGINS IN 2013

GOALKEEPER With all three of the goalkeepers from the 2012 campaign no longer with the team, the UB defense will be backed up by a pair of new players. Likely to start from day one, Waleed Cassis (Ottawa, Ontario) comes to Buffalo after two seasons with Division II California State-LA. While there, he led the team deep into the national tournament and went 23-5-10 as the team’s starter while collecting numerous academic and athletic recognitions. Backing him up will be a pair of first-year netminders who are coming off successful prep careers. Andrew Siviy (Webster, NY), who was the cornerstone of a successful high school team that won three Section V AAA titles, two WNY region titles, with two appearances in the New York state final four, and one finals appearance. He had a 0.52 GAA with an 18-2-2 record as a high school senior in 2012. Ryan O’Mara (Tully, NY) owns nearly every major record for his high school team, and led Tully to a sectional championship in 2012. He also competed for just one year on the track and field team, but won league and section titles in the long jump and the triple jump. DEFENSE Despite such a drastic turnover in the roster, the back line of the defense should prove to be the most experienced on the roster heading into the 2013 season. It begins with senior Jesse Andoh (Thornhill, Ontario), who has the athleticism to play any position on the field but has been a consistent presence on defense. Joining him will be a pair of promising sophomores who excelled despite being thrust into major minutes as true freshmen. Shane Satar (Pickering, Ontario) played in all 17 games for the Bulls last season, eventually becoming the team’s every-day left back. His motor enabled him to join Andoh in the attacking third at times, and he too is capable of playing different positions if needed. Jake Jacobs (Hawkley, England) started from day one of the season as the team’s center back, before missing the final six games with injury. He will be back at 100 percent for his sophomore campaign, and he brings great size and toughness to not just the defense, but on set plays for the offense. Daniel Cramarossa (Unionville, Ontario), Alec Fisher (Battle Creek, MI) and Austin Place (Edmond, OK) are true freshmen who have had successful prep careers and long history of success on the club level. The team can also lean on players like Vinny Divirgilio (North Tonawanda, NY) and Braden Scales (Lockport, NY) if additional depth is needed on the back line. MIDFIELD On the flip side of the defense, the midfield will be made up almost entirely of new faces. Divirgilio and Andoh will be returners, but are not expected to start in the midfield. There is a distinct chance that three true freshmen will be getting the day one starting job, beginning with Ryan Pereira (London, Ontario) in the middle. He has a winning pedigree on the club level, and has the size to be a versatile center midfielder. On the wings will likely be Braden Culver (Oakville, Ontario) and Russell Cicerone (Bloomfield, MI). Culver is an athlete who competed in five different sports in high school, and Cicerone has a strong background in club soccer and a family history of success in collegiate soccer, as his sister Anina was a top performer for Western Michigan. Another player to watch is transfer Kristian Lee-Him (Pickering, Ontario), who comes from Appalachian State after two years as a starter. He led the team in scoring last season and had been named to the SOCON All-Academic team twice. Eric Friedlander (Merrick, NY) is another true freshman, and spent his senior season at Shattuck St. Mary’s, one of the top programs in the nation. FORWARD The UB attack will be a highly competitive position in the preseason, with three returners joining four new players who each have the skills to excel on offense. Marek Albert (Sacramento, CA) was a threat to score at any point last season, but came up empty handed. Despite that, the senior has been a proven scorer who expects to thrive under Riddle’s system. Sophomores Marcus Hanson (Mississauga, Ontario) and Pierantonio Tassone (Hilden, Germany) saw their roles grow as the season went on in 2012, with Hanson possessing the size and speed to have a breakout year and Tassone aiming to return from injury with another step forward.

Transfer Nicolay Netskar (Oppegaard, Norway) comes to UB from Wheeling Jesuit in West Virginia. In 16 starts, he scored seven goals while adding seven assists and was All-Conference as just a freshman. The spelling might be slightly different for Nicolai Berry (Auckland, New Zealand), but the results are similar. Berry spent time with the New Zealand national team, and also led his high school team in scoring for the final three seasons of his prep career. Jonathan Zvi (North Great Neck, NY) earned his way on to the team after impressing the UB coaching staff at a prospect camp, and has the athletic ability to make an impact for the team. Steven Stryker (Kalamazoo, MI) has not just one of the most appropriate last names on the team, but he led his high school team to 20 wins and a top-10 ranking in the state of Michigan as a senior. SCHEDULE On the docket will be seven of the 12 total non-conference games serving as rematches from 2012, and a home-heavy Mid-American Conference schedule that will see the very best in the conference come to UB Stadium.. The season begins on Aug. 30, with the Bulls traveling to Olean for a 5 pm match at St. Bonaventure. The Bulls won 2-1 at home against the Bonnies in 2012, and own a 22-9-3 record in the regional series. That following Sunday, the home season begins as the Vermont Catamounts come to UB Stadium for a 3 pm kickoff. It will be just the second meeting ever between the programs, with Vermont winning 2-0 at home in 1995. A weekend road swing is next, Sept. 6 at Bucknell and Sept. 8 at Siena. The Bulls will face the Bison for the first time since 2008, and will meet Siena for the third straight season. The team will then have its first mid-week matchup of the season, as Canisius heads down Main Street on Sept. 11 to continue the longest-running rivalry in the program’s history. That will then give way to a three-game road trip that features a SUNY matchup against Binghamton (9/13), Detroit (9/20), and Cleveland State (9/22). The Bulls dropped home matches against the Bearcats and Titans last season, and will take on Cleveland State for the first time since 2010. The main portion of the non-conference season will come to a close with a pair of weekend games at the end of September. First up is a home match against Cornell, who won in Ithaca last season. Then on Sunday, the Bulls travel to Pennsylvania to play against Robert Morris. The MAC season will offer four home matches out of the six games, as the Bulls hope to get back to the conference tournament after just barely missing out in 2012. The conference season begins on Oct. 4, with Bowling Green coming to UB Stadium for a 7 pm match. The Falcons won 3-0 at home last season. Then on Oct. 12, Coach Riddle will have a homecoming of sorts, as he returns to Kalamazoo to face his former squad in Western Michigan. Last season, the Bulls earned a 2-0 win at home over the Broncos. After that, the team will have a three-game home stand that starts on Oct. 15, with Hartwick coming to UB Stadium. Last season, the Bulls fought through rough weather to win 1-0 at Oneonta to remain in MAC tournament contention. Next will be perennial MAC power Akron, who won the conference championship in 2012. The Zips will come to Buffalo on Oct. 18 at 7 pm.

2013 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO MEN’S SOCCER

Head Coach Stu Riddle begins his first year at the helm of Buffalo in 2013, and with him comes a whole new wave of talent who join a young core from 2012. Coming in with the new coaching staff will be 14 newcomers, ranging from high-level high school performers, to international standouts and a trio of college transfers who have already proven to be steady contributors.

The team will break up the conference schedule with two non-conference matches to end the month of October. Gannon comes to Buffalo on Oct. 23 to resume a regional rivalry. The two teams have met eight times in total, but have not squared off since Sept. 30, 1992. Then, on Oct. 26, the team heads south to Nashville to play at Belmont. It will be the first meeting ever between the two schools. The Bruins finished the 2012 season with a 6-8-3 record. The conference and regular season will close out in early November, starting on the first at home against West Virginia. The newest member of the MAC, the Mountaineers will face the Bulls for the sixth time ever, and will travel to UB Stadium for the first time since 1989. To wrap up the regular season, the Bulls will play at Northern Illinois on Nov. 9. At the conclusion of the regular season, the conference tournament will be held Nov. 15-17 at the campus of the top seed.

Coaching Staff Stu

Riddle Stu Riddle begins his first season as head men’s soccer coach at Buffalo, being named to the position on January 2, 2013. Riddle comes to Buffalo from Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan where, in four seasons, he revitalized the Broncos’ men’s soccer program. Riddle restored WMU to one of the finest in the Mid-American Conference and Great Lakes Region during his tenure, making back-to-back appearances in the MAC Championship game in 2010 and 2011. Riddle led the Broncos to winning seasons in two of his four years, something that had only been done twice in the 15 seasons prior to his hiring. In four seasons, Riddle went 33-36-9, had 10 all-conference selections, eight all-tournament team selections, six Academic All-MAC honorees and produced an individual NCAA statistical champion in goals per game. The 2012 Bronco squad (11-6-2) carried a 3.45 team Grade Point Average which was the second highest in NCAA Division I men’s soccer and fourth amongst all divisions combined. Prior to joining the Broncos, Riddle helped guide Fairfield University to a 2008 NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating previously unbeaten and No. 6 nationally ranked Loyola to win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament championship. In 2008 Riddle also accepted the challenge of developing the Kalamazoo Outrage soccer program with its first season of competition coming that summer. The Outrage finished its inaugural campaign with a 10-7-1 record, beating perennial Premier Development League (PDL) powerhouses the Michigan Bucks and Chicago Fire in the PDL playoffs before losing to eventual national champion Thunder Bay Chill in the last eight of the competition. Riddle spent two seasons as an assistant soccer coach at the University of Evansville, beginning with the 2005 campaign. In his second year with the Purple Aces the team posted a 9-8-0 record, only the program’s third winning season since 1997. Riddle’s coaching resume also includes time as head coach for the Kalamazoo Kingdom PDL in 2006 where former LA Galaxy MLS midfielder Josh Tudela and 2006 National High School Player of the Year current Portland Timbers and U.S. National Team midfielder Eric Alexander spent a season playing under Riddle’s tutelage.

As a player, Riddle played collegiately at Coastal Carolina University where he was twice named team MVP and was an All-Big South Conference team member in 1997 and 1998. Riddle signed with New Zealand’s first-ever professional soccer team the Football Kingz in 1999 where he played with Oceania Player of the Century Wynton Rufer and with current San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) Assistant Coach Jason Batty. Riddle went on to play professionally in England with Oxford City, Scotland with Greenock Morton and in Australia with Altona Magic. While at Greenock Morton, Riddle was coached by European Cup winner and former Liverpool and Scotland national team star Peter Cormack. He also played in the United States with the Des Moines Menace and West Michigan Edge in the PDL. As a youth player Riddle played alongside Washington head coach Jamie Clark for Western Suburbs FC as a guest player in New Zealand’s national under-19 tournament in which he was one of three nominations for Player of the Tournament. Riddle made his international debut for the New Zealand Olympic All Whites in January 1996, appearing in a 2-0 victory over the Solomon Islands. He went on to play in four national team games under current University of Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark, highlighted by an appearance in a 1-0 victory over arch rivals Australia in Adelaide.

New head men’s soccer coach Stu Riddle began to build his new staff in his first week on campus, announcing the addition of Cody Camp as the goalkeepers coach for UB. Camp was a former player under Riddle at Western Michigan before an injury led him to a new career as a coach. He joined the Bronco’s staff in 2011 as a student assistant. “I’m delighted that Cody has chosen to join me on staff,” coach Riddle said. “His mentoring and training of the goalkeepers at Western Michigan was exceptional and I have no doubt that the current players will flourish under his tutelage” For his career between the pipes, Camp made four starts as a freshman in 2009, and started in two games in 2010 before his injury. He then moved to the coaching staff for the 2011 season, when the team made a run to the Mid-American Conference final after beating the defending national champion Akron in the semifinal round. Camp’s second season as an assistant was one of equal success for the team’s defense, as the cumulative goals-against average of the team dropped precipitously from 1.77 in 2011 to just 0.91 as the team won 11 games. As a high school goalie, Camp was named Northern Indiana Player of the Year senior year after leading Mishawaka Marian to the state title game. He also earned first team All-Northern Indiana Conference, first team all-district and all-state honors as a senior. In the season before, as a junior, he set the school record with 13 shutouts and was named second team All-NIC and second team all-district. The son of Craig and Beth Camp, Cody’s younger brother Connor is currently a goalkeeper for Western Michigan.

New head men’s soccer coach Stu Riddle rounded out his coaching staff this afternoon, announcing the addition of Rahim Mohamed as his assistant coach for the upcoming season. Mohamed comes to Buffalo after serving as an assistant coach in Canada for Forest City London Soccer Club of the USL’s Premier Developmental League, and most recently serving as an assistant coach for Fanshawe College’s women’s soccer team in 2012. “It is extremely important to get the right staff on board when looking to build a program,” Riddle said. “I had very specific needs for my assistants and am fully confident that, in Rahim, we have found what we needed in that first assistant role. His networking skills and vast recruiting contacts are going to be a very big plus for this program and I am delighted to have had him accept the position.” Rahim spent one season at Fanshawe, helping the team to a silver-medal finish at OCAA provincials. After the team lost its opening game of the season 3-0, it reeled of seven straight wins and allowed only two more goals in total in the final seven games leading up to a 1-0 loss in the gold medal game. Prior to Fanshawe, he spent three seasons (2009-11) with FC London, helping to guide the team to the playoffs in all three years he was on staff. In addition to his coaching and player development experience, Rahim has received certificates for his completion of numerous training and professional development programs, including NSCAA Premier, Advanced National, and National Diplomas, as well as a Special Topics Diploma.
