Join the celebration as our lady of honor, Maestro JoAnn Falletta, takes the podium for an extraordinary new season. JoAnn has handpicked a sparkling repertoire, including Saint-Saëns’ Rondo Capriccioso played by violin virtuoso Tianwa Yang, whom JoAnn conducted in her United States premiere performance; Liszt’s powerfully foreboding Totentanz, with JoAnn’s friend William Wolfram on piano; and of course a spotlight on our own musicians that will feature Roman Mekinulov, principal cello, along with our new concertmaster. Strauss’ warmhearted Der Rosenkavalier, a Falletta favorite, rounds out a magical musical evening.

He conducts George Li, whom the Washington Post calls “staggering,” on Grieg’s instantly recognizable Piano Concerto No. 1. Cindy McTee’s percussive Circuits and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 are the perfect complement.

Overturre to La gazza ladra Rush for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra Concerto for Alto Saxophone Lyric for Strings Symphony No. 4, “Italian”
While usually associated with jazz, the saxophone can be as beautifully melodic as a violin or a clarinet, yet somehow never found a permanent home in the traditional orchestra. In this inventive performance with renowned conductor Thomas Wilkins on podium, the brilliant classical saxophonist Timothy McAllister breaks boundaries on Fuchs’ Rush and Glazunov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone. Walker’s Lyric for Strings (reminiscent of Samuel Barber’s Adagio) and Mendelssohn’s joyful and familiar “Italian” symphony bring this performance home.

Cello Concerto in C Requiem
The final notes of Mozart were left unfinished at his death on December 5, 1791. The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus joins the BPO to honor the world’s most celebrated composer with his profoundly moving Requiem, an essential experience for any classical music lover. The masterwork is paired with a staple of the cello repertoire by Mozart’s contemporary, Joseph Haydn, magnificently performed by young artist and Buffalo native, Drew Cone.
The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Irish Classical Theatre present a very special collaborative production of Shakespeare’s warm-hearted comedy with Felix Mendelssohn’s brilliant score. Four young lovers discover the course of true love runs anything but smoothly, as supernatural sprites conspire to reveal what fools we mortals be, and draw us all into the collective dream of romance and merriment.

Time for Three, featuring violinist Nick Kendall, violinist Charles Yang, and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer, defies any traditional genre classification, happily and infectiously, with an uncommon mix of virtuosity and showmanship. The trio joins your BPO in an unforgettable performance of Jennifer Higdon’s bluegrass-classical fusion, Concerto 4-3. “ There isn’t a bad seat in the house.” From front row to back row, house left to house right, floor to balcony, patrons describe the majestic acoustics of Kleinhans Music Hall from their favorite vantage point.
“ Kleinhans Music Hall is rightly famous as an architectural masterpiece and acoustic marvel, but to me it’s also a celebration of the human spirit. It’s a love story about two wonderful people, their love for each other, and their gratitude to the people who helped them succeed. Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans sought out concerts in the finest halls in the world. They treasured music – how the shared experience of music could bring a community together – and they wanted to give Buffalonians the same experience here. They left their fortune to make it happen, and Kleinhans Music Hall is the result of their dream. That story inspires me. Every time I experience a concert here, I imagine Ed and Mary sitting a few rows away, together again, holding hands, happy with their legacy, and relishing the music right along with us.” — Lauren Becker

main floor of the hall that I sometimes enjoy, but I like sitting to the rear of the balcony where I can see all the stage and all the audience, and use all my senses to experience the entire atmosphere in front of me all at the same moments in time. ” — Paul Imbert
“The sight lines and acoustics are excellent in the balcony. Sitting in Row K of the upper balcony feels just like having front row seats...and provides easy viewing of the soloist.” — Sheldon Merritt
“ My wife and I have supported the BPO for many years and consider the orchestra a gem that our region must cherish and preserve for the future. We are Classics series subscribers, and enjoy the comfort, view and balance of sound that [Maestro Circle] Row K provides for us. Strategically, we feel that our location in the hall allows us a more intimate and involved musical appreciation experience. From our seats, we find that we are concentrating more intensely and enjoying the subtleties and nuances of the musical selections to a greater degree.” —M orton Abramson

“ So what’s the ‘Pops’ in a Pops concert? The word comes from ‘popular music,’ music that everyone knows and loves. You might not always recognize the name of the composer or the piece, but you’ll invariably know the tune which you likely heard before on television, stage or screen. The BPO Pops performs the soundtrack of our American experience: from bluegrass to Broadway, rhythm-and-blues to rockand-roll, and, of course, all that jazz. Your Buffalo Philharmonic plays it all. It’s a joy to work with an orchestra that can change style on a dime, and deliver knock-out performances every time—your Buffalo Philharmonic, they’re hot stuff!” John Morris Russell, Principal Pops Conductor
