Niagara Falls International Marathon Race Day Slated for October 30th years. Both are avid runners who have completed a number of marathons, ultra-marathons, orienteering and adventure races. “Like most races today, the Niagara Falls International Marathon must manage the ever changing expectations of runners,” shared Co-Race Director, Chesla. “Apart from the unique aspects of the international bridge crossing for our marathon runners, the one thing that truly separates our race from others is our unique finish line near the brink of the falls. The roar and mist emanating from the falls is something that cannot be matched,” added Chesla.
We encourage you, our readers, to get out and try something new. Then come back and share your stories with us for a chance to be featured on our website or in the next edition of our magazine. From kayaking on the waterfront to riding your bike on the newly launched rails to trails, Western New York has created many new opportunities for you to be the adventure. For our most up-to-date calendar, please visit www.buffalotrek.com. We also encourage event organizers to keep submitting information to us that we can share with our readers. Thank you!

When deciding to choose among the 26.2, 13.1, 10k or 5k race offerings that comprise this year’s Niagara Falls International Marathon, one thing all runners will have in common is crossing the finish line at the brink of the falls. Each of the four races will take place on Sunday, October 30th and follow the scenic Niagara Parkway. Participants of the full marathon course will also have the added bragging rights of running in two different countries along their 26.2 mile route. The race, now in its 19th consecutive year, has a unique history that goes back to the early 1970’s. The inaugural race was named the Buffalo to Niagara Skylon International Marathon and took place in 1974. In just three short years, the race attracted over 3000 runners, surpassing participation of both the Boston and New York marathons at that time. In 1980 and 1984, the course was used in part for the men’s US Olympic Marathon trials. Unfortunately, due to a lack of sponsorship in 1986, the international race was suspended. Ironically, the race’s cancellation gave birth to the Buffalo Marathon that most
WNYers are familiar with today. Fast forward to 1998 and the international marathon was “resurrected” with a new sponsor and name, the Casino Niagara International Marathon. A half marathon was added in 2001, followed by a 5k distance in 2005 and two years later, a 10k distance was introduced. 2007 also saw the finish line for each of these respective races moved to the brink of the falls where it continues to be today. Voted as the most scenic marathon in Ontario, the Niagara Falls International Marathon continues to grow with participants representing over 36 countries. Approximately 20% of runners come from the U.S. with a large number of them from right here in WNY. Diane Chesla and Henri Ragetlie began as Co-Race Directors in late 2016. Diane had directed The Chocolate Race and two ultra-distance races in the Ontario Ultra Series, bringing 10 years directing experience with her. Henri has been directing races on behalf of the St. Catharines Road Runners for 20
The start for the full marathon begins at the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo at 10 AM. This race is sanctioned as a Boston Marathon Qualifier. The half marathon is promoted as a flat course for most of the entirety of its route. The “half” begins at 10 AM on the Canadian side near Warwick Ave on the Niagara Parkway. The 10k is an out and back course with negative elevation change with a start time of 9 AM. The 5k is also promoted as a flat out and back course. This race starts at 9:45 AM. Each race features various shuttle and parking options. New for 2016, registered runners can enter for a chance to win a tour for four individuals of three different craft breweries in Niagara complete with limousine service on the day before the race. Two groups of winners will be chosen to win this unique contest. One of the stops on the tour, the Niagara Brewing Company has been designated as the official craft brewer of the race and will be featured as part of the post-race festivities. Race weekend will also feature a Health & Fitness Expo on the Friday and Saturday preceding the four races to be held on Sunday. HEALTH REPORT
Be Ready to Save a Life by Learning CPR By Richard Vienne, D.O. Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Univera Healthcare You have seen signs posted in public places that an AED is on the premises. AED stands for automated external defibrillator, or, more accurately, semiautomated since a human operator is needed. Did you know that the purpose of an AED is to stop the heart, rather than start it? More on that later. First, let’s clarify two common cardiac terms. A “heart attack” is a plumbing issue: An artery that brings blood to the heart is blocked. Victims are usually conscious, and while they need medical attention quickly, an AED is not needed because the heart is beating and the victim is breathing.
breathing. The heart is electrically active, but beating chaotically and unable to pump blood to the brain and other organs. Medical attention is needed immediately or the victim will die.
“Sudden cardiac arrest” is an electrical issue: The heart’s electrical system unexpectedly malfunctions. Without warning, the victim collapses and stops
Sudden cardiac arrest may be reversed if CPR is immediately performed and an AED is used within minutes to shock the heart into stopping its chaotic
The technical term for this is ventricular fibrillation (V-fib or VF). More than 300,000 Americans outside of hospitals die each year from sudden cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association. With V-fib, immediate CPR and ready access to an AED is the only hope while 911 is called.
rhythm. Once the heart is stopped, its own natural pacemaker may reestablish a life-sustaining pulse. AED trainers compare the administration of a heart-stopping shock to unplugging a home computer when it’s acting up, letting it sit for a minute, and then plugging it back in to reboot. Underwriting grants from Univera Healthcare have placed nearly 160 AEDs into service across upstate New York, including at Old Fort Niagara, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Darwin Martin House. Univera also has underwritten AEDs for sheriff’s patrol cars in Erie, Wyoming and Chautauqua counties.
in their use, and also in the proper administration of CPR. If the device detects a shockable rhythm, it will provide voice instruction on how to deliver an electrical charge. If it doesn’t detect a shockable rhythm, it will not allow a shock to be administered. The absence of any cardiac electrical activity is commonly called a “flat line.” For those victims, CPR offers the only chance for survival until medical professionals arrive. Now that you know more about CPR and AEDs, your homework is become more than an untrained layperson. Go online to RedCross.org or Heart.org and find a CPR class near you.

MULTI-SPORT
Buffalo Paddle Bike Run Delivers a Boat (a Bike & a Run) Load of Fun This Buffalo Treker was fortunate enough to be one of the 250 plus adventure seekers taking part in the July 30th Buffalo Paddle Bike Run at Silo City. The event, now in its second year is the brain child of local artist, professor and entrepreneur, Justin Dahl. The event incorporates all the elements of a traditional triathlon but offers a great alternative for anyone who may be intimated by the swimming aspect of a multi-sport event. The “PBR” swaps out the swim in favor of a 4 mile kayak and also featured a 17 mile bike ride and 4 mile trail run. Some participants opted for the “Beginner Route” which cuts the paddle and run distances in half but maintains the full bike course. Eight continuous groups or “waves” of participants began the day with a four mile paddle on the Buffalo River. Waves of approximately 20 paddlers began at 7:30 AM and groups continued every half hour until the final wave launched at 10:30 AM. The out and back paddle provided great views of the inner harbor and the massive grain silos that transverse the route. Although the vast majority of paddlers opted for single kayaks, I did see of couple of canoes and stand-up paddle boarders along with some folks who opted to use tandem kayaks. Renting a 9 ft. kayak for the event proved great when it came to transporting it down to Silo City but I was at a serious disadvantage with those paddlers who brought their 14 ft. or longer boats to “track” the water at speeds not made possible in a shorter boat. When the kayak portion was all complete, I was surprisingly pleased to see that I finished in an hour, meaning that I had churned my arms fast enough to average a 15 minute per mile pace in my tiny vessel. Quickly transitioning from my water shoes into my sneakers and bike helmet, I was off on the second leg of my trek. The 17 mile bike ride traversed some unique streets / bike Page 4

paths through the outer harbor before making our way through South Buffalo, arriving at Frederick Law Olmsted’s South Park and passing by one of our local gems, the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens. The biking portion of the event went smoothly as the route was clearly marked and a large contingent of Buffalo Police officers were strategically positioned at all the major intersections. I also was able to make up for the time disadvantage in the water as my road bike easily passed by riders on either hybrid or mountain bikes. The route was mostly flat but the extra gears did come in handy on a few short uphill climbs throughout the route. As the second leg of my journey was winding down, I looked forward to the final “leg” of my PBR tri-sport day. As soon as I placed my bike back on the designated rack, I was off and running. A minute into the run and I was inside a silo, a definite first time experience
for this runner. After climbing a ladder to exit the silo, I was back outside and listening to the volunteer’s instructions to follow the green cones. Soon I was out running on a recently cut out path through the over growth around the Silo City complex. Maneuvering trough the twists and turns of this unique trail run, I made certain to keep my eyes scanning the ground a few feet ahead. Although the trail was very manageable, bright green paint marked a few hazardous areas where someone might possibly slip or trip over an unexpected obstacle. After exiting the fields, volunteers pointed us in the direction of the kayak start area. I heard the starting horn for the 10 AM wave of paddlers who were just beginning their adventure. I was tempted to yell that I had almost completed the challenge but thought that cruel. Running along a silo, a volunteer pointed to the finish line but I stated, I’ve only ran two miles so I was
then instructed to take a second lap around the course. Now familiar with the interior of the silo and the terrain of the trail, I picked up my pace just a bit. I crossed the finish line at 10:07 AM, giving me a personal time of 2 hrs and 37 minutes for the first of many future Buffalo Paddle Bike Runs to come. Officially, the event is not timed, allowing participants to complete the three legs at their own pace. With running serving as my primary athletic past time, I tend to seek out times after each race. Upon a little further reflection, I made a mental note of how enjoyable it was to compete and not be totally fixated on how fast the course could be completed. The true enjoyment associated with the 2016 Buffalo Paddle Bike Run was the camaraderie of the shared experience with my fellow participants and just how fun the event turned out to be.

Catch Up With Buffalo’s Newest Fitness Blog: Stay Active in Buffalo NY By Molly Egloff
I never thought of myself as a jock. In fact, I wasn’t a jock, plain and simple. Sure, I was active – I danced, I played intramural softball, and I even swam for a year in high school. However, I considered myself to be far too nerdy to be one of those “cool” kids who were defined by how physical they were. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not minimizing the amount of passion and athleticism that goes into dance (if you doubt that dance is as tough on your body as football or soccer, talk to the lack of meniscus in my knees, and my wrecked patellar tendons). I always thought of myself as the artistic type, but things definitely change as you get older, and you can definitely redefine how you see yourself as years go by. When I left Irish dance at age 23, I felt that I had aged out – I saw my body and my joints as my enemy which had ended my ability to pursue my passions. This led to doing research about crosstraining and trying to fix my many muscular imbalances by working out in a different way. I became passionate about movement and activity, but not just the structured, regimented type that came from traditional dance classes. With this revelation, I started to realize that Buffalo is loaded with tons of ways to get your body moving in different ways. Looking through Facebook events will give you some idea of the renaissance that Buffalo, especially the waterfront, is experiencing. Canalside and the Outer Harbor are taking off in a big way, and are constantly full of events during all four seasons that give
WNY residents a chance to try new things like watersports (including kayaking and paddle boarding), icebased activities (ice skating, curling, or even ice biking) and fitness classes (everything from Zumba and Barre to Hoop Dance and Kangoo Jump). Those aren’t the only ways to have fun outdoors either – there’s also miles of trails to hike and run, mountains to snowboard and ski on, and new twists on old sports (bubble hockey or pickleball anyone?). Not only that, but there are many unique studios in the area that have things like aerial yoga and movement (like you see on Cirque Du Soleil), Bollywood-style dance, and yoga (there are so many wonderful yoga teachers in this area!). I also want to instill the idea that sports aren’t just for the kids. So many adults leave their sports dreams behind once they graduate from college and start carting their own kids around to their soccer games. This doesn’t have to be the case – team sports for adults like softball, soccer, volleyball, roller derby, hockey, and others are still growing, evolving, and taking off in a big way – team sports are not just for kids! There are an immense number of ways to get moving around here, and so many things that you can find passion for. I wanted to bring those opportunities to people so that they can find something that they enjoy. I started Stay Active in Buffalo NY to write reviews and keep people up to date on all of the goings on in town, and to compile as many of these opportunities in one place as possible (I do all of the hunting and scouring of events so that you don’t have to). I also keep an up-to-date google calendar that has a schedule of local events right on the main page of the blog – if you’re bored, check there. Chances are good that there will be something good going on that day that you can join and get moving! Check out the blog at: www.stayactivewny.blogspot.com we update with reviews and articles on Mondays, and a weekly events roundup on Thursdays! August 2016

TRY SOMETHING NEW
Yoga Trails of WNY Sweat Hard and Find Inner Peace. Yoga Trails of WNY is a new outdoor club that combines the physical fitness of hiking, along with mind-calming yoga, at various locations throughout Western New York. “We all love the outdoors and yoga and we are pleased to see that there is a demand for our adventures,” said Tricia, Lead Yoga Instructor. Taesha Arnold and Dan Schmitt are the main trail guides of the club who have been hiking for over 20 years. The club offers a wide variety of Yoga such as Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, Kundalini, and more. “We have been collaborating with local yoga instructors and studios all over WNY. Sessions range from four to five mile hikes combined with mini yoga classes,” says Tricia. As part of their first season, Yoga Trails hiked at Franklin Gulf, Sprague Brook Park, Chestnut Ridge and held a bonus class that included a 12 mile bike ride and beach ball fitness class. Several future hikes plan to include Little Rock City and Griffis Sculpture Park.
Yoga Trails typically meets once or twice each month with sessions involving between 20 and 30 individuals with a widespread age range of 25 - 50. The club has a strong female presence, but with each outing they are seeing more men and couples attend. Yoga Trails is also throwing around the idea of doing a kayaking and yoga session in the near future. Taesha, Dan, and Tricia are always excited to explore and collaborate with likeminded people in the community. For these three, sky’s the limit and they have big plans including overnight adventures and hiking/yoga retreats. All sessions are complimentary and the club is excited to see people outside moving and grooving. For individuals that may want to run as part of a team, you can register as a 6 Pack (team of 6 racers). Prizes will be awarded for the fastest 6 Pack as well as the most creative costumes and best attitude. This year’s event also features a .6k walk which equates to about a third of a mile. Walkers will receive a beer sample at the start and remaining samples at the finish. This year’s post race party is being sponsored by Southern Tier Brewery and will take place just prior to the Ball Park Brew Bash at Coca Cola Field. You can purchase your tickets to the Brew Bash when you register for the race and save on your admission. Taptrails 6k participants also receive early admission to the Ball Park Brew Bash.
Many runners might confess that a great post race party often times contributes to their decision making process when selecting their next race. With that notion in mind, the party atmosphere surrounding the 2nd Annual Taptrails 6k race should provide a great reason to get outside and get moving. This year’s Taptrails 6k will take place on Saturday, September 24th beginning at 2 PM. The course starts at the Pan American Brewery on Washington Street and finishes at Coca Cola Field where the Ball Park Brew Bash is taking place later that day. This race is a 6 kilometer run that features six “beer stations” along the route allowing runners to sample local craft favorites from different local brewers as they maneuver the course. For runners choosing to abstain from consuming alcohol during the race, each beer station will also offer plenty of water. All participants are rewarded with a full pint of local craft beer at the finish.

Most notably, the race has been moved back a couple months as last summer’s heat made the run a bit steamy. Klass hopes the date change insures racers are more comfortable this year. “Another big change for 2016 is that we are adding additional personnel at each beer station to minimize any
