Medical cannabis dispensary to open in Romeoville Midwest Compassion Center granted special use permit for facility By laura katauskas staff reporter

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

With only three currently slated to open in Will County, a medical cannabis dispensary is scheduled to open in the middle of a Romeoville industrial park. The Romeoville Village Board recently approved a special use permit allowing Midwest Compassion Center to operate a dispensary at 1335 Lakeside Drive. The village amended its

code to include the special use back in January 2014, according to state law. The code states that no school, day care center or residence should be within 1,000 feet of the dispensary. The location in an industrial park was chosen for that reason, ensuring the site would not be near the public. The village held a public hearing on the dispensary July 28. “The village passed its zoning some time ago, and this is obviously something the state deemed allowable,” Romeoville

Mayor John Noak said. “There are many restrictions that the state has. They are the ones who set the guidelines, how it is secured, etc. It’s all in state powers, not ours.” Principal Officer of MCC Nicole Jansen van Rensburg said the facility is not open to the public and will be secured with alarm systems and security guard, and all staff members will review safety procedures. Patrons of the facility must be pre-approved by the state and will need a prescription card from the Illinois Department of Health. Citing how the decision could be controversial, trustee Sue Mickelvitz encouraged van Rensburg to elaborate on how the facility would operate. Van

Oh, What a Shindig! Bolingbrook celebrates 50 years at Jubilee By laura katauskas staff reporter

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

The village of Bolingbrook has been celebrating its 50th anniversary since the start of summer with a host of events throughout town, including scavenger hunts, full-scale regattas and band performances. Now, one of the main events

created by the anniversary committee, “Oh, What a Year: 1965 Shindig,” will kick off with a hot air balloon launch at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 on town center grounds, 375 Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook. The event will take residents back to the glory of the 1960s, including a 1965 cover band, vintage candy and cars, and trivia contests. A drive-in movie, “Beach Blanket Bingo,” is also scheduled to be shown on the village’s three

9-foot by 12-foot projector screens, which will include snacks straight from a drive-in concession stand. The party continues through the weekend with the village’s 25th annual Jubilee. The Jubilee will be open from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. The Jaycees are sponsoring the traditional carnival in the front of town center. Bingo will be hosted all three days of the event and the Jubilee Craft Show will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Jubilee’s classic car show, Summer Cruze 2015, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Family Fun Day will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, and include activities created with children and families in mind.

Romeoville approves commercial projects for Route 53 corridor Three development projects slated for Route 53 corridor

Three development projects slated for the Route 53 corridor will soon begin construction. Final plans were submitted to convert 2.3 acres at 1301 Naperville Drive in the Marquette Business Park property into a Car Care Collision Center and Hertz rental car facility. The business will offer collision repair, car rental

and towing services. The existing 24,000 square foot building, the former USA Skate Property, will be remodeled into an auto repair facility with standard improvements including new entrances, signage and landscaping. Reilly’s Roadhouse, represented by owners Dawn and Donna Reilly, are remodeling the former Leo’s Bar and Grill at 201 E. Romeo Road to operate a new bar/restaurant. The building is 7,000 square feet with two separate rooms, a bar/ restaurant and a banquet/stage area. The owners hope to open in September.

In addition, final development plans for Burger King, located near 135th street and Route 53 include an extensive remodel to the building. The building was originally constructed in 1976 and the last remodel was completed in the mid1980s. The site also needs to update curbs, gutters and landscaping to conform to village standards. “Revitalizing the Route 53 corridor is a priority for the Village. We look forward to these improvements and to welcoming the businesses,” said Mayor John Noak. These developments are expected to be complete in 2016.

Rensburg explained that there would be limited access to the area and a guard would check patrons for proper identification in a waiting area before letting them in to choose their product. MCC was awarded a license by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to operate in Will County. The company said its principal officers have a combined 125 years of experience owning and operating pharmacies, medical diagnostic testing, and cannabis cultivation centers and medical cannabis dispensaries. As a result, MCC received the sixth highest score in the state out of 211 total applicants. According to the company, its

mission is to provide safe medical access to patients who have been diagnosed with a debilitating condition. Trustees Jose Chavez and Linda Palmiter applauded the move, saying they’re glad to see the issue will allow people in the community to get the help they need. The village also approved a cannabis privilege tax of 5 percent on the cultivation center that sells to the dispensary. Midwest is not operating a cultivation center. Noak urged caution, however, saying the village would need to monitor the competitiveness of the tax structure, as the project progresses.

Romeofest draws large crowds By laura katauskas staff reporter

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Every August, Romeoville residents gear up a four-day adventure in town complete with food, fun and friends. Romeofest was held Thursday through Sunday at the town’s center and featured a variety of entertainment. The festival stretched from the Romeoville Recreation Department parking lot, through Village Park and into Deer Crossing Park and the town’s amphitheater. From country and rock to pop and 70s tribute bands, many came out to hear performances, grab a bite to eat and catch up with neighbors. Younger festivalgoers came out for the carnival rides, a family tent with magicians and Jim Nesci’s Cold Blooded Creatures, and a new free family laser tag event, among many other activities. A fireworks show capped off the night Friday and a grand finale Sunday lit the sky for miles.

Arts Council, library hold summer street art event By laura katauskas staff reporter

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers submitted photo

Drawing with chalk is a summertime tradition, and this year the Bolingbrook Arts Council and Fountaindale Public Library District took it to a new level. In an all-ages program, the two groups challenged residents to come out and make their artistic mark on Bolingbrook’s streets. “I am privileged to work with the Fountaindale Library to present art experiences to the community,” Janice Kessl of the Bolingbrook Arts Council said. “Mayor [Roger] Claar encouraged our partnership, and we have successfully engaged people of all ages in bringing out their inner artist with the street art event this summer.” For six weeks in June and July, the arts council invited the community to showcase their artistic talents by drawing a picture on a sidewalk square at the library. From lizards and minions to college-bound and 50th anniversary Bolingbrook messages, almost 75 people left their mark on Bolingbrook -- at least until the rain washed it away. Despite the rain, library staff took photos of their art and placed those pictures on Fountaindale’s website up for a vote. The winners will be announced after the Bolingbrook Pathways Parade Sept. 13. “This has been a great partnership between the arts council and the library,” said Melissa Bradley, communications manager at Fountaindale. “Not only has it showcased the talent we have right here in our community, but it has also given people a safe place to hone their skills and practice their art. We look forward to partnering with the Arts Council on future

community projects.” Kessl agreed. “It has been a fun venture that we would like to do again so that people can express themselves in this unique way and enjoy and refresh their youth,” she said. Kessl said the council is currently working on its next project, which is scheduled to coincide with Art Awareness month in October, while continuing its efforts to showcase community diversity through art. I recently was on my way to a client, when she called to say she had a lastminute emergency and needed to push our start time back an hour. come to order Since it wasn’t with sue becker feasible for me to go back home, I parked near her house and spent the next hour making phone calls, writing a few thank you notes and reading. I was grateful that by having planned my day the day before, I had with me not only a list of phone calls to make and notes to write, but also the materials to get those tasks accomplished. I also had a couple of

magazines with me to read. My informal survey of a variety of sources showed the average American spends an average of 45 to 62 minutes every day waiting. That’s a staggering amount of time, especially considering that most people feel that they don’t have enough time in the day. So where do we do all this waiting? Some of it is where it’s difficult to do much more than just wait: in traffic or in line at the grocery store. But then again, maybe you’d find it helpful to use such time to do those deep breathing exercises you’ve been meaning to get to or to make a mental list of what you’re grateful for. I was “lucky” that my delayed appointment gave me a large block of time, so I was able to get a lot accomplished. But even if I’d had only five minutes or so, I could have made one phone call, written one note, addressed an envelope or read an article. of waiting time can add up to substantial achievement. Imagine how much more productive and less stressed you might feel if you made better use of small pockets of waiting time. For example, when waiting at the doctor’s office, you could read, or just close your eyes and enjoy shutting out the world for a while. If you wait as long as I sometimes do, you may imagine your doctor has done the same thing! My point is not that every waking minute of your day should necessarily be filled with activity and being productive. But if you’re feeling like you need more time in your day, it may be there if you only look for it. I’d love to hear what you discover about making the most of the time you spend waiting.

Chicago Cubs legend visits Senior Star Senior Star says event helps connect community By bugle staff sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

It was a full house at Senior Star at Weber Place, where the community came out to visit with Chicago Cubs great Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins. A three-time All-Star and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award winner, Jenkins spoke to a crowd at the senior center. The former Chicago Cubs pitcher found success pitching for the team, starting in 1967, and is one of only four pitchers in major league history to record more than 3,000 strikeouts with less than 1,000 walks. “Several guests, residents and associates commented on how much they enjoyed the event,” said Tom Johnsrud, executive director of Senior Star at Weber Place. “This was a great opportunity to

the community they live in.” More than 50 local high school students recently earned Girl Scouts of the USA’s most prestigious national honor for girls, the Girl Scout Gold Award. Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana honored their accomplishments during a special ceremony June 6. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout ages 14-18 may earn. The leadership skills, organizational skills, and sense of community and commitment required to complete the process set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship. Girls complete seven steps to earn the Gold Award, including the completion of a significant service project. The project fulfills a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global), creates change and is sustaining. The Gold Award recognizes the work of Girl Scouts who demonstrate leadership culminating in 65 hours or more, dedicated towards their service project. Girls complete a minimum of 40 hours in a leadership role before embarking on the final project.

Girls have earned Girl Scouts of the USA’s highest awards since 1916, just four years after the organization’s founding in 1912. These awards include the Golden Eagle of Merit, Golden Eaglet, Curved Bar, First Class and the current Girl Scout Gold Award, which was introduced in 1980. As awareness of the Girl Scout Gold Award continues to grow, so does its prestige. An increasing number of colleges are offering financial incentives to those who earn Girl Scout Gold Awards and admissions counselors view it as a sign of an individual girl’s ability to lead. Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana impacts the lives of more than 61,100 girls and 21,000 adult members in 245 communities in six Illinois counties (Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Lake and Will) and four Indiana counties (Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter). The organization believes girl scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Field gets cooked Bolingbrook grad David Cooke sets records in Illinois Open win

By Mark Gregory sports reporter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard

It has been an emotional year for former Raider David Cooke. In December his younger brother, Chad, died while playing a pick-up basketball game. Two weeks ago, Cooke put on a show at the 66th Illinois Open – setting records along the way. The 2011 Bolingbrook High School graduate carded a record score of 199, 16-under-par, at Royal Melbourne Country Club, in Long Grove, beating Web.com pro Vince India (11-under 204). His 128 total over the final 36 holes was also a tourney mark in the Illinois PGA event. Cooke’s five-shot win matched the largest margin of victory by an amateur in tournament history equaling Gary Hallberg’s winning margin in 1977. The 22-year-old Cooke opened his final round with an eagle. After a good drive, he nailed a 144-yard pitching wedge to six feet and dropped the putt for an eagle. That broke his three-round tie with Brad

Marek, who birdied. When he has holes like that, Cooke said he thinks he has some extra help from his brother. “I have had that feeling in the last six months or so,” Cooke said. “There are some holes where I feel like he is helping out up there. Chad was a fan of the Illinois Open. There are certain things like when I make a huge putt or hit a shot that is a lot closer than I thought it was going to be and everything is going my way, I feel that he is watching over me.” After the opening eagle, he posted two more birdies, then birdied the fifth and eighth holes to go out in 6-under 30, building a four-stroke lead over India at the turn. Cooke bested the next low amateur, Lincolnshire’s Jack Watson, by 13 strokes. “It was something I’ve related to for a few years and something I’ve paid attention to. This is something I have had friends play in so it is something I was happy to succeed in,” Cooke said. “The difference maker for me is when I am hitting

Hit king coming to Joliet By Mark Gregory sports reporter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard

It has been more than a decade since Pete Rose has been to Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet. Since then, the team has a new name, new owners and play in a new league, but still want the advice that comes with the Major League Baseball hit king. Rose will return to Joliet Wednesday, Aug. 19 as a special, one-day, hitting coach for the Joliet Slammers. “He has been here before when his son was playing, but he hasn’t been here in a while, so we are excited to bring him back,” said Slammers Assistant General Manager Heather Mills. Rose will be in uniform and coach first and third base for an inning for the Slammers as well as talking to the team before the first pitch. This will be Rose’s first on field appearance in uniform in the Chicagoland area since 1989. He will be available to meet and sign autographs with fans on the concourse for a $40 fee. Vouchers are needed for the autograph and must be purchased prior to the game. For those wanting an even closer experience, the event will open with a VIP meet and greet in the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame. The meet and greet package costs $114 and will include a reserved seat ticket to the game, a Slammers baseball to be autographed by Rose, a photo of each participant with Rose,

The Joliet Slammers will bring Rose back to the Joliet ballpark Aug. 19. and the opportunity to hear a short speech by Rose. Regular ticket prices for the game are also different for this game, as club level tickets are $18, reserved are $15 and lawn seats are $10. The Slammers are expecting to see ticket sales increase, but that is not just the one-time attendance bump the Slammers are looking forward to. “Of course, we are looking forward to the increased ticket sales, but more importantly, we are looking to bring out people who have never come out before,” Mills said. “We still have people out there who don’t realize there

is professional baseball in Joliet. Since we released this, we have had a lot of people coming out who have never been here before. We are looking forward to showing what we have to people who love baseball.” During his playing days, Rose played 24 seasons with the Red, Phillies and Expos. He holds the record for most hits in a career with 4,256 as well as the record for most career singles (3,215), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), and plate appearances (15,890). T h ursday, Aug ust 13, 2015 | bug lenew spapers.com cooke | from page 11 the ball close with my shorter clubs and making putts. When I get into a groove and know the distance I am hitting them really makes a difference. “This course was a good balance. It rewarded hitting the ball far, but you had to be in the fairway. It was very playable, but you had to be spot on. The greens were

really undulating and you had to control the spin going into the green. Getting the ball close on the approach shot was important because you had shorter putts and you had to make sure you converted into birdies.” Cooke won a pair of tournaments at North Carolina State University last season, but it was nice for him to win on Illinois soil. “It is awesome being one of

the first players to come out of Bolingbrook high school and pursue golf and play in college,” he said. “My high school golf coach (Chuck Marik) is a big supporter of mine. I was a big basketball player in high school and he was the one that told me I could really do something with it. So, being able to make them proud and show them that what happened in high school was a big deal was nice. Playing at Bolingbrook High School was where it started. “Being in school in North Carolina, they don’t get to see it firsthand. Being able to play well in front of a home crowd was really cool. It makes me feel proud of what I accomplished.” The timing of the Illinois Open was also important to Cooke, as it followed the weekend of the inaugural Chad Cooke Classic basketball tournament in Lisle. The tournament was run by Charleston Hope, a College of Charleston student-run charity that is run by Chad’s girlfriend Emily Hoisington and something Chad was passionate about. Cooke wore the Charleston Hope logo on the final day of the tournament. “I wanted to wear it because it was the first time Emily would see me play. Having her there watching me for the first time, I wanted to show her how much it means to me that I can be a part of the foundation by wearing that shirt on the last day,” he said. “It was a bonus that I got to take pictures in it with the trophy. That charity meant a lot to Chad and it means a lot to me.” Cooke will enter his senior season at NC State, where his goal is to limit his bad rounds and be an All-American this season before looking to turn professional next year. Winning the Illinois Open is motivation heading back to school, but Cooke said being motivated hasn’t been an issue, as he plays for Chad. “I have been trying to stay motivated for him and I know that he would want me to chase my dreams and I know this make him proud,” he said.

On The Green

Coyote Run offers risk/reward holes for all levels For the first time we reviewed a course south of Interstate 80 as we played Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor. The course starts with four consecutive short par-4s, a great chance to start off you round with some great scoring. The first hole plays just 360 from the tips and 33 from the white tees. You have to drive over water and there are bunkers that could trap up a long drive just short of the green and a bunker to the left of the green. Next is a 339-yard par-4 that plays straight and slightly uphill at the green. It is a large green, but it is important to hit your approach to the right area or a three-putt could ensue. The third hole is 348 yards and has bunkers off the fairway and a bunker in front of the green, to the right. It is followed by a risk-reward par-4, my favorite hole on the course. That is because I drove the green and made birdie. It plays just 280 from the white tees,

but plays over some water and a large group of bunkers in front of the green. Unless you can play a fade, which is my natural shot, laying up is the best option. I was able to bend it left-toright around the bunkers and up to the taylor’s take by scott taylor green. The fifth hole is just 135 yards from the white, but is 215 from the blue. It, too is played over water, although it shouldn’t come into play, similar to the previous water holes. So, from the white tees, you shouldn’t have more than a wedge as an approach into the greens (at least I didn’t), through the first five holes. Unfortunately, my iron game is struggling right now and I made four bogeys with the birdie. The sixth hole offers another

short wedge approach shot. It plays at 500 yards that doglegs right with a creek in front of the green, almost forcing a layup. The green has a big slope from front to back, so it is important to land on the same side as the hole. The seventh hole is a difficult par-4 at 373 yards. Water lines the left portion of the fairway, making the hole play longer as you have to bail out right. A 133yard par-3 follows (over water) and the front nine finishes with a 533-yard par-5, which bends right. The back nine starts with a dogleg left par-4, which plays 420 yards and is slightly uphill at the green. The 11th is a 163yard par-3 and is followed by a short, but difficult par-4. At just 306 yards, the fairway shrinks towards the water in front of the green, making it a challenging driving hole. The 13th is another par-3 over water and the 14th is a straightaway par-5 at 491 yards.

The 15th hole is another risk/ reward hole at 305 yards with a dogleg right. The fairway slopes towards the water on the right, and there is out of bounds left. Many will lay up and hit an iron into the green over the water. I went for the green and landed in a perfect spot, 50 yards short and left of the green, nearly out of bounds. Of course, I still failed to make par. It does get very tight around the green. One more par-3 over water (161 yards) follows and then there is the final par-5 at 510 yards, which doglegs left. The final hole is a slight dogleg right that plays just 340 yards but with bunkers surrounding the greens. Overall I enjoyed playing the course. It offered good scoring holes and risk/reward holes. They also had some holes where you had to play smart and take your medicine. Unfortunately, with all the play out there (which is a good thing as well) the greens are filled with

ball marks. While this might affect your putting from time to time, it is still worth coming out to play. The fact that it is just $52 during the week to play for nonresidents is even more reason to make the trip to play the course. The weekend fees are very reasonable as well at $62. All in all, this is definitely a place to visit.

Public invited to tour new cardiovascular pavilion Hospital says redesigned facility ensures more convenient care

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is inviting the community to attend a dedication and open house for its new Deb and Alan Feldman Cardiovascular Pavilion. The open house is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at the hospital, 3815 Highland Ave. As part of a panel discussion on topics related to heart health, cardiologists Stephen Rowley, Eleanor Ross and Gaile Sabaliauskas are expected to answer attendees’ questions. The Feldman Cardiovascular Pavilion expands the hospital’s

cardiac rehabilitation and diagnostics area, bringing it closer to the observation unit and catheterization laboratory. The redesigned facility ensures more convenient care for patients, whether they’re coming in for routine diagnostic tests or recovering from a life-threatening heart attack. The project’s final phase was completed in July. The pavilion is named after Deb and Alan Feldman in recognition of their generous gift to the hospital’s capital campaign. The Hinsdale couple is a long-time supporter of Good Samaritan Hospital, and they have served on various councils at the hospital. “Heart care is a strong service line at Good Samaritan, and this will make it even better,” said Alan Feldman. “As a community, we need to invest in excellent health care—and, at Good Samaritan, we will get great returns.”
