Township services critical to community Video highlights what services would be lost if government spending decreases By laura katauskas bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

Right now hundreds of residents in DuPage Township need to turn somewhere for help. Some may need emergency assistance to help pay a bill after being let go from a job. Rather than hanging out on the street corner, kids are playing basketball, football or being tutored. Seniors are learning to avoid the scams of potential threats from those who target the elderly. Right now, DuPage Township is doing something about it and has been doing it for years. The township office offers numerous programs aimed at such programs for those who truly need a hand up. With the threat of a two-year tax freeze looming in the political arena, Township Supervisor William Mayer is out to ensure that residents know just what the township has to offer the community. “In a time when a lot of government action is basically reactionary, we’ve being doing things right now to help the residents of the community,”said Mayer. “When the housing market began to see its troubles, we were there and one of the first to create housing programs and credit counseling to help families, saving more than 700 homes from foreclosure.” Created by staff, a video, titled,

“DuPage Township is working for you…Right Now,” takes a powerful look at what types of services would be lost should the government decrease spending. Check out the video posted on their Facebook Page at DuPage Township Food Pantry or on YouTube at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=UTnzcBfC4VU. Mayer said the premise for the video came in believing that a picture is worth a thousand words. Staff merely set out to show what they do, every day, right now. The township consistently works in the community, with its most recent program, Tools for School, nearly 1,000 students received backpacks full of school supplies to kick off the school year. Each year, the DuPage Township Food Pantry provides a trunk full of food for Thanksgiving dinners where hundreds line up for assistance. There are more than 2,500 members of the Senior Levy Center, where seniors can not only get together for social activities but are educated about various issues. Youth services are abundant, with programs from teens to toddlers to help buffer the cost of sports, tutoring or social activities. “Why should one child not be able to participate in something just because his or her parents does not have the revenue that their neighbor has,” said Mayer. “We just want to make sure residents are being helped, it’s that simple.” The township receives less than one percent of property owner’s entire tax bill. Putting a freeze on that would not make sense or do much to put a dent in Illinois’ deficit, explained Mayer. “We can’t control what happens but locally we know that we are very well supported by the mayors of Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Naperville, who come to us personally at times asking for us to help out someone they know. As a village they sometimes can’t address such problems of emergency assistance, the township can.” Mayer said the township is helping those that need it, properly identifying those that do, and in essence making a better community for all. To learn more about what the township has to offer, visit www. dupagetownship.com or call 1-630-759-1317.

Police chaplains celebrate 25 years of ministry Volunteer chaplains have made it their mission to offer comfort and understanding By laura katauskas bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

In a time when emotions are running high and individuals are experiencing what may be the very worst time of their life, a group of volunteer chaplains have made it their mission to offer comfort and understanding so sorely needed to those in the community. Bolingbrook Police Chaplains are celebrating 25 years of ministry and service to the Police Department and the Bolingbrook community. Coordinator Reverend Sharon Engert said the group is a voluntary association of highly and specially trained ministers that provide assistance at times of stress and crisis for both community members and police officers themselves “A police officer has to deal with a variety of issues, there are always difficult calls, a shooting, a death, a troubling case—they are human too. Sometimes they just need someone to listen,” said Engert. There are currently seven chaplains who each volunteer one day a week and are on call 24 hours a day. In the event of an emergency, he or she is called to the scene or the department to speak with whomever may be in

need. Current clergy include Mark Piper, Ray Hamilton, A. J. Jones, Gerrie Mempin, Bernard Kendrick, Sharon Engert and Elmer Harris. “We are pastors and deacons of all different faiths who want to represent God’s love for people whether that means sharing a cup of coffee and talking things out or helping someone find a shelter, we are there to lend that presence of ministry,” Engert said. Police chaplaincy is an ecumenical movement of clergy responding and extending the service of the clergy association to people in crisis. Chaplains submit to an extensive background check and complete police training and community crisis care in order to become police chaplains. In 1990, the Bolingbrook Police Department administration saw a need for police chaplaincy and approached the Bolingbrook Ministerial Association for clergy chaplain volunteers. Engert said in forming the chaplain unit, they modeled the Bolingbrook police chaplaincy program after the highly successful and respected Rockford, Illinois chaplaincy program. Engert recalls that shortly after the formation of the chaplaincy team, the immediate need was

obvious. The chaplains were called when two Bolingbrook High School students were killed in a traffic accident on their way to school. They provide support to the family and to the students of the high school. At the time, approximately 10

clergy volunteered, working on call two days per month. Among the names of early clergy participating were Bob Armstrong, Hal Brown, Paul Carlson, Ken Dignan, Elmer Harris, Bernard Kendrick, Brad Newton, Bill Rorer, Tom Ross, Royal Speidel and Rich Twist.

The Police Chaplaincy program was originally under the police leadership of Officer Jim Lehmann and under the ministerial leadership of Rev. Rich Twist as the coordinator. In 2000, with Officer Lehmann’s police retirement, Officer Brian Ferry was the police liaison to the chaplains until his retirement in 2014; and the ministerial leadership has rotated among the clergy. Since its inception, the chaplains have continued to provide support and service in times of crisis to the personnel of police department and to community members. Not all police departments have a Police Chaplaincy program and Engert applauds Bolingbrook for being one of the few that does, noting its importance to both the department and the community. “Our main job is to listen, somehow in this day and age, listening has become a lost art,” said Engert. “We have very committed clergy who are committed to the officers and the community. It does get hard but we are here to serve God and that’s what keeps it going.”

Bolingbrook woman gives husband life-saving gift Fundraiser to benefit kidneytransplant survivor By laura katauskas bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Out of love and support, a wife made a brave decision to undergo surgery and give her husband her kidney so that he may survive. It is also out of love and support that neighbors, friends and family are hosting a fundraiser for the couple to pay for the medical expenses that the family has had to endure. “You look at them and see the ultimate love story,” said neighbor Sherry McKeithan, who has made it her mission to organize a fundraiser to help support the Martin family. “They stand to the testament that together anything is possible and that needs to be recognized.” Curtis Martin has diabetes, which began to worsen with severe ramifications of the disease that left him comatose, blind in one eye and on kidney dialysis. His wife of 18 years, Knikita, has always stood by his side. And watching him

Knikita Martin, left, recently donated a kidney to her husband of 18 years, Curtis Martin. suffer was too much to bear. She had become his caregiver when treatment was needed at home and later at the hospital. She had given up her job to remain with him, taking on work-at-home jobs, which would come to an early end as well. His teenage son and daughter, made their sacrifices as well, doing their best to pitch in. But it didn’t matter to her, she said, she knew they would get through this. Despite his resistance, for he did not want anyone to be tested as a kidney donor, she went without him knowing and was found to be a match. She worked

hard at becoming healthy herself to ensure a successful transplant. She began working out with Trainer Eric Basset and his program EB30X, dropped four sizes and gained a healthy lifestyle. She was then ready for the surgery. But there was a waiting list in Illinois to perform the surgery and it was in Wisconsin where the Martins would eventually have the surgery. “I love him, how could I not do this?” she said. “He has gone through so much, I didn’t want him to go through any more. So I got healthy, so he could get healthy. His doctors have told him he has the Cadillacs of kidneys because of it,” she jokes. The transplant was a success and Martin is responding well to the new kidney. The couple now travels back and forth to Wisconsin for follow up visits and therapy. McKeithan is hoping a fundraiser will handle some of the cost. The event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at Bar Louie located in The Promenade. A $20 donation at the door will pay for heavy appetizers. Street artist Milton Cornado will be performing and will likely auction off a piece of his work to be created at the event. McKeithan is still looking for raffle donations to be awarded throughout the evening. If you would like to donate or would like further information, contact her at mckeithan.sherry@gmail.com or 630-618-7731. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Martin family. “I just can’t believe the kindness of everyone and I was shocked that people were doing this for us, it means so much,” said Martin.

Curbside checkout brings ‘fast books’ to Tibbott parents Forget feeding your body with fast food from the local drive-up. The latest trend is feeding your brain with “fast books” from Tibbott Elementary School. Tibbott Library Media Center Director Erin Preder launched what could be the Chicago area’s first elementary school curbside book checkout service at the Bolingbrook school. More than a dozen parents took advantage of the opportunity with many others promising to use the new service in the near future. “It’s all about getting books in the hands of kids as much as possible through as many methods as possible,” said Preder, who got the idea from a No Excuses University Facebook page that touted a similar operation in Texas. “This is so wonderful,” added Tibbott Principal Ana Wilson. “This is going to give parents more access

to books, especially those who may have small children who can’t leave the car in the morning to come inside.” Preder secured the cart she needed through a grant from the ValleyView Educational Enrichment Foundation and stocked it with her favorite fairy tales, nursery rhymes, picture books and non-fiction books. “It’s a little bit of everything for every age and because we have a large bilingual population, half the cart is in English and half is in Spanish,” she said. “It’s for parents. Kids won’t be able to check out books at curbside.” Preder, who keeps a little notebook handy to jot down requests for books that might not be on the cart, plans to be curbside with her computer and wireless bar code scanner several times a week

depending on the weather. “Once the weather turns cold, we’ll have to come up with something to keep it going,” she said. “I’m hoping to make parents regulars. I don’t want them to stop picking up reading materials if they don’t see me outside.” Parents echoed Preder’s enthusiasm about the new service. “It’s awesome,” Carrie Calderon said. “It’s so nice to pick something out really fast and run.” “There are some awesome options here and I don’t have to go inside,” added Nancy Castillo. “I’m really excited,” Preder said. “I’m jumping for joy because this idea finally is a reality.” Curbside checkout will be available from 8:45 to 9 a.m. Parents can follow @JRTLibrary on Twitter to determine when Preder will be curbside.

Illinois American Water to conduct annual flushing in Romeoville Water mains flushing helps ensure continued high-quality water service Illinois American Water said it will be flushing water mains and hydrants in Romeoville’s service area, with flushing scheduled to continue until the end of September. Illinois American Water conducts an annual flushing program of its water distribution system to help ensure continued high-quality water service. Flushing the water

system entails sending a rapid flow of water through the water mains. As part of the flushing program, fire hydrants are checked and operated to help ensure fire protection in the community. According to Michael Smyth, Senior Manager of Field Services and Production for the Chicago Metro District, “Flushing of the water distribution system is

performed every year primarily to remove sediment in pipes. An annual flushing program helps to keep fresh and clear water throughout the distribution system.” Illinois American Water will place signs in neighborhoods where flushing is occurring so residents are aware of the system work. While the flushing program is underway, customers may experience a slight drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration. Customers should

refrain from doing laundry during the time of day the flushing program is taking place in or near their neighborhood. If tap water is discolored, it is recommended that several cold-water faucets are allowed to run for a short time until the water runs clear. Using more than one faucet allows the water to clear faster. Dear Editor, I understand how the plague of heroin has resulted in far too many mothers and fathers having to bury their children. In many communities, it is easier for teenagers to get access to this drug than alcohol. This is why I am disappointed in Gov. problem across much of Illinois, the steps taken in Will County have resulted in lives being saved. The leadership shown by local leaders to equip law enforcement officers with life-saving medication has been instrumental in reducing the number of fatalities from 53 in 2012 to 33 in 2014. The governor’s veto would mean those who are most vulnerable to addiction will be blocked from accessing emergency care. I believe the governor’s decision in valuing dollars over lives was extremely short-sighted. Last year alone, over 600 people in Illinois died from overdosing

on heroin. Cutting off thousands of Illinoisans from medication and treatment will only lead to more dependency and death. Not only will getting users the help they need save lives, but will also save the state over $58 million in Medicaid spending. Raiders win district showdown By tory dean for the bugle

www.buglenewspapers.com @Voyager_Sport

Ground and pound was the theme for Bolingbrook in the battle of Valley View Friday night as the Raiders beat school district rival Romeoville 55-6. All of the Raiders (1-1) touchdowns came from rushing the ball. Senior fullback Lucas Warren scored the first points of the night with a one yard touchdown rush that seemed to light a fire on the Bolingbrook sideline and that fire carried over to defense as Romeoville couldn’t get their offense going and went three and out. After a bad snap on an attempted punt by the Spartans (0-2), Bolingbrook got the ball in great field position and immediately punched it in for another six. This touchdown was the first of two touchdowns for senior running back Jaylen Griffin. “My line did their job, they did what they needed to do tonight.” Griffin said. “We came out (last week) at Glenbard (West) unprepared, we made a lot of mistakes this was kind of a redemption game for us.” On the following drive Bolingbrook’s defense showed why they’re knows as the nucleus of the team by picking off Spartan senior quarterback Anthony Kitchens. Senior linebacker Tuf Borland came down with the interception his first of many plays made during the game. On the first play following the turnover, it was Romeoville’s defense that made a splash by forcing a fumble after a completed pass to wide receiver Eddie Sanchez. While they got the ball back,

Romeoville would turn the ball over again after a sack by linebacker Izayah Green-May forced the ball loose, which was recovered by Borland to end the first quarter. The Brook kept its momentum going in the second by scoring early into the quarter, this time by junior running back Jeremiah

Lebron. Lebron tallied three touchdowns on the evening. After a three and out, Bolingbrook got great field position after a punt return by Dangelo Colon. The ground game would continue after a series of handoffs by Griffin and

Meg Carmody had a goal in each of Lewis’ first two games.

Women’s soccer blanks second-straight opponent Another game, another shutout. Lewis women’s soccer cruised to a 3-0 win over Alderson Broaddus in a non-conference game at Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 6) afternoon. It is Lewis’ third 2-0 start to a season in the last four years. Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute thanks to a goal by sophomore Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley). The UIC transfer scored her first Lewis goal with a strike 10 yards from the front of the net. Redshirt freshman Hannah Weber (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./ Sandburg) each earned an assist on the play. The goal came on Lewis’ 11th shot of the game as the Flyers controlled the pace of play for the majority of the first half. Alderson Broaddus’ best chance came on a high lofting shot by Caitlin Forest that hit the crossbar with 16:53 left in the first. The Flyers pounced quickly in the second half to double their lead. Junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) recorded her

second goal in as many games on an assist by senior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) 2:22 into the final 45 minutes. Fuller scored her second of the game at 53:33 after converting a penalty kick to make the score 3-0. “All three goals we scored today were positive goals,” Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. “They weren’t giveaways or mistakes (by the opponent). They were goals we had to earn.” The Flyers held advantages in shots (20-7), shots on goal (10-1) and corner kicks (5-1). Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./ Lockport) and freshman Audrey Pearson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) combined for Lewis’ second consecutive shutout. “Anytime you limit a team to one shot on goal the organization is pretty good,” Koenig said.

MEN’S TENNIS Lewis University freshman Brendan Peterson (Elmhurst, Ill./

York) made a statement in his first collegiate men’s tennis meet, as he captured the No. 6 Singles Flight Championship with the 0-6, 6-3, 11-9 win over UIS’ Grant Fitzsimmons at the Art Peterson Invitational, hosted by Western Illinois, on Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon. Peterson, however, was not as successful in the No. 2 Doubles Championship. Cardinal Stritch’s William East and Abel DeCosta earned the 8-4 win over he and sophomore Andre Norasith (Elgin, Ill./South Elgin). Norasith and Peterson advanced to the championship with the 8-6 victory over Truman State’s Gavin Hatter and Matt Peterson. Lewis junior Mate Srdanovic (Split, Croatia/GraditeljskoGeodetska Tehnicka) was edged in the No. 1 Singles Flight Championship, as Cardinal Stritch’s Fabio Perasso picked up the 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win. Lewis returns to action on September 17, as they head to Grand Rapids, Mich., to participate in the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament.

UW-Parkside was fourth with 71 points with UW-Green Bay (121) rounding out the top five. “I was really happy with Amanda’s performance today,” Lewis head women’s cross country coach James Kearney said. “I thought she executed the game plan very well, but we definitely have some gains to make.” Farrough was joined in the Top Ten by senior Jamie Hershfang (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton Prep), who was eighth with a mark of 15:26.2. Senior Kayla Patterson (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Homestead) was the third Flyer to cross the finish line, with a 15th-place showing of 15:41.8, followed by classmate Paige Gatter (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo), who was 19th with a time of 15:49.3. The final Flyer to cross the finish line was junior Mollie Dalton (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Conant) with a 21st-place mark of 15:49.9. “Overall I was extremely excited with the women’s performance today,” Kearney said. “To go out and beat, what I think, is one of the Top Ten teams in the region in UW-Parkside and a Division I team in UW-Green Bay is pretty

LEWIS

Volleyball opens season 3-1 at Cal State L.A. Tournament The Lewis University women’s volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday (Sept. 5) during the final day of Cal State Los Angeles’ Tournament. Lewis defeated Seattle Pacific 3-0 (2517, 25-22, 25-17) and Dixie State 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-23).

Lewis 3, Seattle Pacific 0 The Flyers cruised to the straight-sets victory thanks to a .323 to .075 hitting percentage. Freshman McKenna Pierson (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) had 20 assists while redshirt freshman Abby Becker (Monomonee Falls, Wis./ Monomonee Falls) totaled 13 assists. They ran an offense which saw five Flyers record six or more kills. Freshman Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had eight kills to go with her 11 digs. Senior Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) notched nine kills and eight digs. Lewis out-blocked Seattle Pacific 12-2 with sophomore Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) notching eight blocks (four solo). The match had only eight ties and two lead changes. Both lead changes came early in the first set.

Lewis 3, Dixie State 1 The Flyers bounced back from

an opening game setback to win the next three games. Where Lewis’ early match lacked drama, the Dixie State match had 28 ties and 11 lead changes. The Flyers held a 21-19 lead in the third set, only to see Dixie State push back to tie it at 23 and earn set point at 25-24. A Dixie State service error and a Parsons kill gave Lewis set point. Dixie State Delayne Daniel tried the corner on an attack attempt on the next point and missed to give Lewis point 27 and the win. A 7-2 run in the fourth set put the Flyers up 19-13. A victory seemed imminent but then Dixie State went on a 7-0 run. However Dixie State’s 21-20 lead was brief. Parsons gave Lewis match point thanks to a kill for point 24 and then junior Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) dropped a serve in the middle of the court for an ace and point 25. Yuede finished with 23 digs. Hyland led Lewis offensively with 17 kills. Parsons hit .393 with 14 kills while adding 13 digs. “As a team they are doing a great job of making adjustments when I constantly throw in new lineups,” Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. “I am hoping chemistry will continue to improve so wins can come easier.” The wins move Lewis to 3-1. Dixie State is 2-2. Seattle Pacific is 1-3. A day earlier, Lewis opened the

season with a split at Cal State LA’s tournament on Friday (Sept. 4). The Flyers topped Molloy 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-20) while falling to host Cal State LA 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 19-25, 26-24) in the second and final match of the night.

Lewis 3, Molloy 1 Senior Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) hit .765 with 13 kills and no errors on 17 swings. Freshman Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had an impressive debut, recording a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./ Nerinx Hall) (10) and Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) (13) each added double-digit digs Lewis dropped the first set, but cruised from that point forward. The Flyers’ dominance was highlighted by an 11-1 lead in the third set. Sophomore Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) had a kill for match point.

Cal State LA 3, Lewis 1 The Flyers struggled out of the gates in the nightcap to the Golden Eagles. Following the rough start, Lewis rebounded with a six-point win in set three. The closest set was the fourth, featuring 16 ties and five lead changes. The Flyers were up 2119 before Cal State LA went on a 4-0 run. The Flyers rallied to tie the score at 24 but a pair of Lewis attack errors followed to give the set and the match to Cal State LA. Davito finished with 12 kills. Freshman McKenna Pierson (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) totaled 24 assists while adding nine digs and two aces. “For our first games of the season we were able to grow and build chemistry,” Smith said. “We have a long way to go in order to reach our goals but if everyone commits I believe we have the talent.” Lewis continues play on Friday and Saturday in the Flyer Festival. The tournament hosted by Lewis will be held at Neil Carey Arena with matches starting at 8 a.m. both days.

T h ur sday, se pTem ber 10, 2015 | bug lenew spapers.com shoWdoWN | From page 13 Warren. On fourth and 1, Warren would burst up the field for a 19 yard rush setting up senior quarterback Michael Freeze for a 12 yard touchdown run on the very next play. The Spartans offense would show some light after a big third down conversion on a scramble play from Kitchens to junior wide receiver Lonnie Trent. A roughing the quarterback penalty would setup the Spartans in Bolingbrook territory for the first time in the game, however, the Spartans couldn’t keep their drive going as the Raider defense would get two sacks and a tackle for loss on the drive forcing the punt. Colon would again set the Raider offense up in the red zone with a punt return, but Bolingbrook wasn’t able to turn that drive into points as a mishandled exchange on an option would result in a fumble and the Spartans recovered. The Spartans offense, however, still couldn’t get anything going against Bolingbrook’s defense

and would go three and out again. On the following drive a 45-yard reception by junior receiver Kendall Smith set up the Raiders at the 1-yard line and Griffin would score his second touchdown of the evening on the next play. On the final play before halftime, Romeoville running back Jordan Nettles broke a 70 yard touchdown run as time expired. The extra point attempt was no good, making the score 35-6 at halftime. Bolingbrook’s offense had 58 pass yards and 126 rush yards in the first half. The Raider defense came to play as they had five sacks, a pick and a forced fumble. The second half would mirror the first half as The Raiders would rush for three more touchdowns. Senior linebacker T.J. Lee said the loss to Glenbard West in week one was the motivation the Raiders needed to come out this week and win. “All we talked about all week is how we didn’t want to lose” Lee said. “We had that fire in us, we needed it and we came out here

ready to ball.” The rivalry got a little heated during the game as two players from Bolingbrook were ejected. “We lost our cool, we didn’t play with class,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow. The Raiders will face Sandburg next week, opening conference play. “We need to string together good practices, it starts on Monday in films we just need to take it day by day and get better,” Borland said. The Spartans face off against Minooka to open their conference play, where first-year coach Oliver Gibson will still search for his first win at Romeoville. “I learned a long time ago football is a humbling sport,” Gibson said. “I came in with the expectations of teaching the kids and it’s been a learning experience for myself. We’re about an offseason and a summer away from being a welldeveloped football team. We need to pay attention to detail, and not break down, everybody has to do their job.”

Village approves new restaurant and grocery store at Route 53, Phelps Avenue Fat Ricky’s will include a restaurant and sports bar, and Franconi’s Grocery By laura katauskas bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers

Uptown Square is continuing to take shape. Final development plans were approved by the Romeoville Village Board for a new Fat Ricky’s restaurant and long-awaited Franconi’s grocery store. The approximate 10,500-square-foot building will be located in Outlot 1 of Uptown Square at the southwest corner of Route 53 and Phelps Avenue in front of the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center. Fat Ricky s will include a restaurant and sports bar, and Franconi s Grocery will include an Italian delicatessen and grocery with Italian bakery and café. The two businesses will have separate entrances but will be connected through a vestibule for customers to walk from restaurant to store or vice versa. “This truly is very exciting and

something we have talked about for a while—it’s nice to be in the final leg before construction,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noak. “It is absolutely a beautiful building. I think we knew early on that this would be top-notch product for the downtown and its redevelopment. This is a truly unique asset to an area that will draw people and is enhancing what has already been a great dining experience. This has been sought after for a long time.” Due to the proximity to the athletic and event center, traffic flow was taken into consideration for the volume of drive-thru orders Fat Ricky’s currently sees and expects at its new building. Trustees voiced some concern on the amount of parking during large events at the center. Community Development Director Steve Rockwell indicated there will 42 parking spaces and in addition, a parking agreement was made with the athletic and events center for shared parking. Trustee Dave Richards noted

Rendering courtesy of village of Romeoville

Rendering of a new Fat Ricky’s location, which will be located in Romeoville’s Uptown Square. parking should not be a daily problem and would only be a possible issue when there are large events at the center. However, ancillary parking is available nearby as well. An abundant landscaping plan is in the works as well complete with a new, wider decorative sidewalk outlining Phelps Avenue and decorative paving, brick pavers and a mixture of plantings harmonious with the overall Uptown Square landscape design plan. Because the building sits in front of the center and is within the Uptown Square development, which includes pedestrian-oriented features around the site, an attractive building design is required on all

sides of the building. The principal exterior building materials include brick and stone. “It’s been a really hard, long road but we’re crossing the finish line and we think it will be well worth the wait. We are trying to create a very interesting atmosphere,” said Fat Ricky’s owner Rick DiPego. The developer expects to break ground within the next month. For years, the village has wanted to create a town center with retail, office, civic uses and public spaces in a pedestrian-friendly environment. Uptown Square is meant to provide a multi-purpose activity area to serve the community. The plan includes the athletic center, on-street parking and a special event area to host community

events. Although Romeoville lacks a “traditional” downtown area, the Village considers the 40-acre established site running from Route 53 to Dalhart Avenue as its downtown and has been working to redevelop the area for nearly a decade. The site was originally developed in the mid 1960s and over time has deteriorated with much of the retail development migrating westward along Weber Road creating an underutilized area. The years of planning are taking formation that began with the new athletic center, the addition of this new restaurant and grocery and nearby across the way, McDonalds is set to open in the fall. Additional retail is expected to be announced soon. Noak said the pieces of the puzzle are starting to coming together as development is continuing and is in line with the Village’s master plan. “It’s nice to see the activity and growth going on downtown and this [restaurant and grocery store] is one of the gems of this development. We are so excited to have them involved in this rejuvenation of the area,” said Noak.
