Kindness matters Inaugural Kindness Gala a success In what was described as a fun, heartwarming and eye opening event, the first Kindness Gala event achieved its goal, spreading kindness. The Kindness Gala, sponsored by author Amy Logan and held at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, who lost her sister to breast cancer, was an opportunity to both celebrate and raise funds for the works of groups who reached out to not only help her sister but countless other outreach programs. Logan said described the night as one of the best of her life, impressed

herself with the amount of funds (totals are still being tallied) that the event raised and proud mostly of the dedication of volunteers or those that donated to make the night a success. “I owe a lot of people a lot of love and thanks…God is so good. In the midst of all these horrific things we see in the news, know that you all are part of something so genuine, so good, so positive and so life-changing,” said Logan. “I don’t think there’s enough thank you’s that could express how truly thankful I am. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I can’t wait to start planning next year’s gala.” With the release of her third book, The Girl with a PINK Cape, which

honors those fighting breast cancer or any other illness, a portion of the profits from each book sold will also go to the gala’s honored non-profit

organizations in attendance for an entire year. To check out the book and order, visit www.gotyourcape.com.

AARP event answers questions prior to program’s open-enrollment period Medicare offers several coverage plans, which include Part A, Part B and Part D By Andrea Earnest bugle staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

Medicare open enrollment begins this week, and individuals who are new to the federal health insurance program have likely spent the last several weeks doing their research. To help ease concerns and answer questions, state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and AARP Illinois recently partnered to give area residents an overview of the Medicare program and its coverage options during a Medicare 101 event at Troy Township Community Center in Shorewood. Attendees to the Oct. 6 event were able to find out more about Medicare and ask questions about the federal health insurance program, which is available to people over the age of 65 and younger individuals with certain disabilities or endstage renal disease. Medicare open enrollment runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. During this time, eligible

people can browse Medicare’s new benefits, make changes to their coverage or enroll in a plan. Courtney Hedderman, associate state director for AARP Illinois, gave an overview of the Medicare program, which she said can seem scary to people who aren’t familiar with its benefits. Once you get it down, however, she said it’s a great program. Hedderman explained that Medicare does not cover everything, including monthly premiums, deductibles, coinsurance or copayments, but added that its main coverage options do cover a significant amount of healthcare costs. Medicare offers several coverage

plans, which include Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance) and Part D (prescription drug coverage). Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, and also includes hospice and home healthcare and some skilled nursing facility care. “Hospice is something that Medicare does cover completely,” Hedderman said. Hedderman explained that the monthly premium for Part A, saying that if someone has worked more than 40 quarters of work, their monthly premium is free. “For someone who has a work history, Part A is free, they’re paying no premiums at all,” she said, adding that someone with little

work history could pay up to $400 a month for Part A coverage. Part B covers medical care, including a portion of doctor visits, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services and Medicareapproved preventive services. For Part B, there is a standard premium of $104.90 per month. For those individuals who earn more than $85,000 and couples who earn more than $170,000, the monthly premium will be higher than the standard premium. Medicare’s prescription drug coverage, or Part D, offers different tiers of coverage, each with its own list of covered brand-name and generic prescription drugs. The plan places drugs into tiers, and

each tier has a different cost. Hedderman explained that tier one is brand-name drugs, and tier four is generic drugs. She said people enrolled in Part D pay monthly premiums and co-pays range from $5 to $35. “The more money you make, unfortunately, is going to cost you in the sense of the premium,” Hedderman added. One resident in attendance asked if Medicare would let you know when you’re getting close to the “doughnut hole,” a term used to describe a gap in coverage that comes with basic Part D plans. When the cap is reached, the beneficiary must pay out of pocket for prescriptions.

Bolingbrook Fire Department stresses fire safety Poster contest was also held in each of the schools in the area By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleStaff

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Bolingbrook Fire Department opened each of its five fire houses for the public to tour Sat., Oct. 10. Firefighters were promoting this year’s theme of “Hear the Beep, While You Sleep,” reminding residents of the importance of fire alarms. A poster contest was also held throughout each of the schools in the area. Posters were hung throughout the firehouse to show off the student’s work.

Three-year old Marcus Love couldn’t wait to wear his costume and check out the fire trucks. His mom thought it was important to come and check out the fire safety tips given by the firefighters. Firefighters were on hand to show off their full gear, sometimes a threatening look to small children in the dark, in hopes of having them feel safe with a firefighter should they even need to. “It makes kids aware of what they need to see and hear if a fire really does happen,” she said. The open house was meant to educate the public about the

important life- and propertysaving benefits of fire detectors and the quick growth of an unprotected fire. Bolingbrook firefighter Tony Peloso said the open house is a chance for the firefighters to interact with community and help them be aware of just what they do. Not only are they apt at fire prevention but to provide medical care and assistance with a variety of emergency situations including hazardous spills. He reiterated the importance of smoke detectors in the home and encouraged residents to call the department should they need help installing one.

It was the safest place to see a firefighter in action—at the firehouse. In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Romeoville Fire Department gave demonstrations at its training center at Fire Station 2 during its open house Oct. 10.

Firefighters set a mock fire, showing how fast smoke can fill a building and the importance of having a fire evacuation plan, reminding those in attendance to always stay low to the ground if ever in a burning building. The range of temperature is vast, with heat reaching 1000 degrees at its top level, explained firefighters. Firefighters were also on hand to show off their full gear,

sometimes a threatening look to small children in the dark, in hopes of having them feel safe with a firefighter should they even need to. “It’s always an eye-opener to see how they work and it’s good for the children to see it and they love seeing the firefighters,” said Romeoville resident Kim DeGregorio. The open house was meant to educate the public about the important life and property-saving benefits of fire detectors and the quick growth of an unprotected fire.

Uptown Square continues to develop Final development plans were approved for a new Fat Ricky’s restaurant By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleStaff

ProgresscontinuesatRomeoville’s Uptown Square with a new strip center set for construction this fall. A multi-tenant development center is being proposed for outlet 2 in front of the Edward Athletic and Event Center at Route 53 and Alexander Drive.

BMO Harris Bank is expected to occupy a portion of the center and plans show for three drive-through lanes to accommodate bank users. The building is expected to incorporate the village’s standard design features using stone and brick; abundant landscaping and larger sidewalks in keeping with the remainder of the downtown area. A total of six tenants is expected for the space. “This is another very important piece of the overall redevelopment of the area,” said Mayor John Noak. “We had a little more work to do with this site and are very excited to move forward. This type of modern center will allow for different users over time.” The developer said pre-leasing

has gone well with final negotiations with BMO Harris and the return of Subway as well as a few other businesses and is expecting to fill the center by the spring. Development is continuing to progress with the opening of McDonalds, just across Route 53 which has already seen steady business, said Noak. Just last month, final development plans were approved for a new Fat Ricky’s restaurant and long-awaited Franconi’s grocery store. The approximately 10,500 square foot building will be located in Outlet 1 of Uptown Square at the southwest corner of Route 53 and Phelps Avenue in front of the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center.

New park to progress on village’s southwest side By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleStaff

Though the state’s budget problems continue to affect local spending, the village of Romeoville plans to move forward with plans for a new park. In January, the village was awarded a $400,000 grant for the Discovery Park, a 31-acre park to be located on the southwest side of Romeoville near Weber and Airport roads. The grant is through the State of Illinois Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant program, but is now on hold due to budget constraints by the state. Knowing the grant would not cover the entire cost of the project, the village had anticipated its own contribution of $125,000 and had budgeted accordingly for design purposes this year. “This is a great project and will be a great addition to the community once it is completed,” said Mayor John Noak. “We want to keep this moving so one day when the state chooses to release

funds we will be ready. We have made our commitment on our part to complete and develop this park site and will highly encourage our folks in Springfield to release these funds and keep their commitment.” Rather than place the entire project on hold, the village has opted to continue with design services and master plan for Phase 1 of Discovery Park, entering into a contract with Hitchcock Design Group and Robinson Engineering. Phase 1 of the project includes one soccer field, an expandable parking lot, sand volleyball courts, an interpretive trail system with overlook, basketball courts, bean bag toss games, and the extension of Highpoint Drive and storm water detention area. “This park site will eventually serve as the primary community park for residents of this area where they can enjoy additional passive and educational opportunities as well,” said Kelly Rajzer, Director of Recreation. “We will have the design phase ready to go and will be ahead of the game when the state comes through.”

Public Works gears up for maintenance By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleStaff

The village of Romeoville will spend slightly more than $1 million in motor fuels tax funds on various equipment and upcoming projects. Up to $500,000 will be used to purchase salt for the upcoming winter season. At $55.65 per ton, half of what it cost last year, the village stands to save several hundred thousand dollars, explained Public Works Director Eric Bjork. “We have done an excellent job in ensuring we have an adequate supply of salt when we saw other towns without last year,” said Mayor John Noak. The village also awarded $200,000 to Denler Inc., the lowest bidder, for its roadway

crack-sealing program. The village-wide program will cover some 75.6 miles of road through all arterial and residential streets. The program endeavors to prolong the life of the pavement so more expensive replacement is not needed in the future. “Our streets are very wellmaintained—I would put our streets up against just about any other town,” said Noak. In addition, the village approved the purchase of a sewer-cleaning truck at nearly $370,000. The vehicle will replace a 2003 model that is no longer cost effective to maintain. “This is something that you cannot afford to be without,” said Trustee Dave Richards. The remainder of funds will be used to cover street light maintenance and energy costs for signals and lighting.

education

Lipinski’s proposal to boost informal STEM education becomes law As a former teacher, Lipinski has pushed for improvements in STEM education throughout his career Congressman Dan Lipinski’s proposal directing the National Science Foundation to award grants for innovative, informal science, technology, engineering, and math education projects and programs has been signed into law. “This new law will help museums and science centers across the country introduce a variety of engaging STEM programs that will support and build upon what our young people are learning in school,” said Lipinski. “These programs will reach the more than 13 million students that visit museums each year, many of whom may be inspired to pursue science careers as a result.” Activities supported by the grants may encompass a single STEM discipline, multiple disciplines or integrative initiatives. “I proposed this grant program

Congressman Dan Lipinski because I know how much of an influence informal STEM education had on me when I was growing up,” stated Lipinski. “Visits to the Museum of Science and Industry, Brookfield Zoo, and other local favorites helped inspire me to pursue and achieve two engineering degrees.” “We are thankful to have a champion like Congressman Lipinski who recognizes the importance of informal STEM education,” said David Mosena, president and CEO of the Museum of Science and Industry. “The learning that happens outside the

classroom, in places like museums, is critical and directly supports the learning that happens in school. This law ensures that the National Science Foundation will continue to fund science education in all environments.” As a former teacher, Lipinski has pushed for improvements in STEM education throughout his career. He serves on the Science, Space and Technology committee, and is the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on Research and Technology. He is also co-chair of the Congressional STEM Ed Caucus. When he was chairman of the Research Subcommittee, he wrote the bill reauthorizing the National Science Foundation, and he was a member of the House-Senate Conference Committee that completed work on the America COMPETES Act, a response to a National Academies report warning that America must take action if it wants to maintain its place as the world’s scientific and technological leader.

It’s important to understand your options to have good coverage, save money By Colleen Van Ham, CEO UnitedHealthcare of Illinois Open enrollment is underway or about to begin for millions of Illinois residents shopping for family or individual health insurance coverage for 2016. Whether you’re buying health insurance for the first time or considering changing from your current plan, the process can often be confusing. Therefore, it’s important to understand your health plan options so you can find a plan that will help enhance your health and possibly save money in the year ahead. The following tips can help you select a plan that makes financial sense while

providing the benefits you and your family need:

Be aware there are three distinct open enrollment periods If you are choosing a plan for yourself and helping family members with their health insurance decisions, the timing could vary. Employer-Sponsored Coverage – Most large employers schedule a two- to threeweek period when their employees can select health benefits for the following year. This period is often in the fall, but the exact dates depend on the employer. Medicare Open Enrollment Period – For most Medicare beneficiaries, the open-enrollment period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 is their only opportunity to make changes to their Medicare coverage for next year. Health Insurance Marketplace – A public health insurance exchange may be a good option for people under 65 who don’t have health insurance. For the

exchanges, open enrollment starts Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 31, 2016. To learn more, visit Healthcare.gov.

Set aside enough time Set aside enough time to review your options and attend any information sessions at work or in your community. You may find ways to save money on your health care costs – whether it’s by selecting a plan with a lower monthly cost and/or deductible level, or a plan that will cover more of the expected costs for a major health event you anticipate, such as having a baby or surgery, or evaluating prescription drug coverage.

Select care providers who participate in the insurer’s network Even if you don’t plan to make any changes to your health insurance, it’s still

goal achieved Bolingbrook senior reaches goal of competing in sectional play

By Mark Gregory sports reporter

Bolingbrook senior Jacob Nagle had a goal this season to compete at the IHSA state sectional. He accomplished that last season when he advanced to the St. Charles East Sectional at St. Andrews GC in West Chicago. He carded an 80 at sectional, five shots off the qualifying mark for the state meet, but he was happy with the way he played in what is arguably the best sectional in the state. “I was trying to get a 78, but 80 is a pretty consistent round for me, it was what I shot at regional,” Nagel said. “I don’t have any regrets. I didn’t have any stupid shots, so it was a legit 80. I won’t look back on it in a couple years and think I could have done any better.” Nagel knew it was a feat to just advance this far in the season. “I am honored to be out here,” he said. “My goal this year was to make it to sectionals and I did.”

He said that although he understood the competition he was up against, he did not try and overplay his round. “You have to stay within yourself and not do anything too risky,” he said. “You just have to play your game because you know your game got you here, so your game is good enough to be here.” Overall, Nagel enjoyed the season. “The season was a lot of fun. The team struggled, but we always went out and had a lot of fun,” he said. “I saw improvement over the year. I started out in the low 40s (for nine holes) and I ended up 38, 39. I could be playing football and getting concussions - instead, I’m here golfing having a good time.” At the regional, Nagel tallied an 80 to lead the Raiders. Others scoring at the tournament were Nolan Smith (101), TJ DeHerra (103), Caleb Driggers (104) and Noah Lineham (137). Romeoville did not have any

Raiders bounce back with win By tory dean sports reporter

It was another tough outing for the Steelmen, as they fell 68-6 to Bolingbrook. Joliet Central couldn’t get anything going on offense. Early and often the Steelman would go three and out and the only offensive score for Joliet came from Malek Harden just before halftime making the score 55-6 at the half. “There are moments of positives watching individuals play, as a team there’s not a whole lot to take out of it,” said Central coach Brett Boyter “We just have to come back to work, put our hard hat on, fix some mistakes, and get ready to play next week” Bolingbrook rebounded from a difficult stretch and had a great night on both sides of the ball. On offense, the run game seemed to have worked best as the Raiders scored six rushing touchdowns in the first half. Jaylen Griffin scored the first points of the night on a 7-yard touchdown rush, his first of two on the evening. The Raiders would have four different running back score in the first half. “Our first possession was disappointing, but we came back and put up the points we needed too,” Griffin said. as a whole played well even without senior linebacker TJ Lee who sat out with a lingering hamstring injury. At the half the Raiders would have one sack, a fumble recovery, and a pick with six points allowed. “Our D-line opened up holes; they worked hard all week and studied film. Our DBs are covering well, there’s not much to worry about,” said Warren about his defense.

Raiders’ coach John Ivlow knew the importance of the win. “It’s a much needed win,” he said. “You don’t want to wait till the last game of the season to make the playoffs” It was Bolingbrook’s fourth win of the season, needing one more to be playoff eligible. Bolingbrook (4-3) will face Lockport (2-5) next week in hopes of getting their fifth win of the season

Farrough sets school record in win on home course Sweeny grabs individual championship at UMSL Fall Invite; Spikers keep winning Lewis University junior Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay) won her second race of the year in dominating fashion, setting schoolrecord with a time of 21:05.21 at the 6K Conference Cross-Over, hosted by Lewis, at the Lewis Cross Country Course on Saturday (Oct. 10) morning. Farrough broke the 17-year old record of 21:06 set by Kasia Arient in 1998. Her nearest competitor finished over 13 seconds behind. Farrough’s performance, along with a seventh-place showing of 22:13.4 by senior Kristen Bonsor (Antioch, Ill./Glenbrook North), helped the Flyers to a third-place finish of 71 points. Grand Valley State won the team title with 26 points, while Northern Michigan was second with 69 points. “I was really happy with Amanda’s race, I thought she ran really well,” Lewis head women’s cross country coach James Kearney said. “We made some moves in the middle of the race, trying a few things out to get ready for conference, regionals and nationals down the road. “I think she stamped her name on the contenders list with the way she raced today.” Lewis’ trio of senior Kayla Patterson (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Homestead), Jamie Hershfang (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton Prep) and Mollie Dalton (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) ran in a pack and finished 22nd through 24th. Patterson crossed the finish line in 22:53.52, followed by Hershfang (22:56.91) and Dalton (22:57.5). “Running as close as we did to Northern Michigan hopefully gives us a legitimate shot at a Top Ten ranking,” Kearney said. • The Lewis University men’s cross country team placed eighth overall with 202 points at the inaugural 8K Conference Cross-Over, hosted by the Flyers, at the Lewis Cross Country Course on Saturday (Oct. 10) morning. Top-ranked Grand Valley State cruised to the team title, as they had seven runners finish in the top eight and totaled 19 points. GVSU freshman Zach Panning won the race with a course-record time of 24:11.10. Lewis senior Matt Jemilo (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) topped the Flyers with a 34th-place finish of

25:55.28, followed by a 48th-place performance of 26:11.21 by senior James Weissensel (Sandwich, Ill./ Marquette Academy). Flyer freshman Jackson Waters (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was 57th with a time of 26:22.52, while sophomore Kyle Irvin (Granger, Ind./Penn) was 60th (26:27.09). Lewis junior Zak Arcara (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) rounded out the top five for the Flyers with a 74th-place finish of 26:42.53. “I was really pleased with the pack effort (today),” Lewis head men’s cross country coach James Kearney said. “We’re missing a few pieces here and there, but I thought we packed up phenomenally. “If we can continue to work up, the sky is the limit for this group.”

WOMENS GOLF Lewis women’s golf’s Rachel Sweeney (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ Mountain Vista) won the individual championship at the UMSL Fall Invite following Sunday’s (Oct. 11) final round. The junior fired a two-day, tworound total of 73-70=143 to best the 62-person field. Junior Melissa VanSistine (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) fired an 80-75=155, tying for ninth. Sophomore Katie Wortman (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) shot a 79-87=166 to tie for 24th. Sophomore Hannah Schultz (North Prairie, Wis./Mukwonago) tied for 26th with an 85-82=167. Senior Jordan Nichols (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) totaled a 7989=168, tying for 32nd. Junior Amy Swanson (Somonauk, Ill./Somonauk) played as an individual, shooting an 86-85=191 for 42nd. Lewis recorded a team score of 311-314=625 to finish in third place. UMSL won the event thanks to a two-day total of 608. The Flyers return to the course on Oct. 26-27 at the CSUSM Fall Classic.

VOLLEYBALL Another match, another win for No. 21 Lewis women’s volleyball. The Flyers swept Bellarmine 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 on Saturday (Oct. 10) afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. Lewis recorded 10 aces in the match. It is the second time this season Lewis has notched 10 aces in

SOCCER No. 14 Bellarmine scored with 47 seconds remaining in the game to defeat Lewis women’s soccer 1-0 on Sunday (Oct. 11) afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Knights and Flyers went to half scoreless. It stayed that way early in the second half thanks to impressive saves by sophomore

goalkeeper Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) at 46:40, 56:35 and 64:37. Bellarmine broke through in the 90th minute. Erika Laws hit the crossbar for the Knights. It bounced toward Mary Beth Gorham who headed the ball in the net for the only goal of the game. It was Gorhman’s 10th goal of the season. Laws earned an assist on the play. Meyer made six saves for the Flyers. Sophomore Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) led Lewis with two shots. “We have to let this process a little bit,” Lewis head coach Chris Koenig

said. “Early in the game we had some chances we didn’t capitalize on and then they got that opportunity in the end. It is hard to swallow but I think right now our focus is on this next week.” Bellarmine University scored a goal in each half to claim the 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Lewis University men’s soccer team on Sunday (Oct. 11) afternoon. “We fought the wind in the first half, but I thought we created some opportunities and played well,” Lewis head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. “The second half was disappointing, because we had the

wind behind us and didn’t play our game where we possess the ball and create opportunities.” With the victory, Bellarmine improves to 8-5 overall and 6-4 in conference action, while the host Flyers fall to 1-10-1 on the campaign and 1-8-1 in GLVC play. Bellarmine received a first-half goal from senior Brandon Shuck (33:19) and a second-half score from junior Beau Laufer (73:18). BU goalkeeper Zach Pogue made two saves to earn the shutout victory, while Lewis netminder Justin Salazar (Elburn, Ill./Hinckley Big Rock) turned away four Knight shots.

Businesses warned of statewide corporate scam Firm calling itself Illinois Council for Corporations is contacting businesses attempting to collect $125 fee Illinois businesses are the target of a new scam that attempts to confuse the business owner about state law, according to a news release from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. A firm called Illinois Council for Corporations is contacting Illinois businesses in an attempt to collect a $125 fee to fill out a corporation’s “Annual Minutes Records Form.” The Illinois Business Corporation Act does not require corporations to file a “Minutes Records Form” or pay such a fee with the state or any private entity. “This bogus firm is sending out a form that looks similar to

the secretary of state’s annual report form,” White said. “We are concerned that companies are filing the form and paying the $125 fee because they believe they are filing their annual report with us, as required by law.” The secretary of state said there is no fee due to the state for annual minutes. The annual report fee is normally the only fee a corporation would pay to the Secretary of State Business Services Department. Illinois corporations should be on alert for this and other similar attempts to confuse Illinois business owners about state law. White said corporations should not reply to the solicitation,

adding that business owners who believe they’ve been targeted by this scam file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. “Posing as government officials is a tactic frequently used by scammers, so it’s important that business owners be vigilant,” Madigan said. “If business owners are asked to submit fees and forms they are unfamiliar with, I encourage them to first contact my office.” All of the Secretary of State’s Business Services forms are available on the website at www. cyberdriveillinois.com. For all other questions, call 217-7826961. If a business would like to file a complaint in relation to this solicitation, contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Office Consumer Fraud Bureau at 800-243-0618 or visit IllinoisAttorneyGeneral.gov.
