State Senators Bill Brady, Kirk Dillard and state Treasurer Dan Rutherford attended the debate at Benedictine University in Lisle on March 6. At the debate’s outset moderators announced that Rauner, who was also slated to appear, would not be attending. This turn of events led to the three present candidates sharing brief moments of solidarity in the middle of the pot shots they were taking at each other and incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn. Rutherford said that he, Dillard and Brady have all been out meeting people face to face, while Rauner is just using money to drive his campaign. “Would you hire someone to be head coach of Chicago Bears who never coached a little league team,” said Brady of Rauner’s political experience. He went on to say that just because Rauner, chairman of R8 Capital Partners, is willing to spend upwards of $6 million on his campaign doesn’t qualify him to be governor.

81st District

Matune critical of Sandack’s votes on same-sex marriage, pension reform By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter

The March 18 primary is a week away, and state Rep. Ron Sandack is hoping to win the Republican nomination for the 81st House District seat and ward off challenger Keith

Matune. Sandack served as a state senator prior to being elected the House of Representatives in 2012. The 81st District includes parts of Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Darien, Lisle, Naperville, Westmont and Woodridge. Sandack also was the mayor of

Downers Grove from 2007 to 2011. Matune, who teaches social studies at Waubonsie Valley High School, was elected to the District 99 Board of Education in 2011. He is currently in his third year on the board. Matune, 44, has been Keith Matune Sandack critical of his opponent’s Ron state representative District 99 Board legislative record, saying Sandack resembled a “Chicago Democrat” with his support of marriage equality. Matune said lowering the corporate tax rate to 5 percent would allow Illinois to compete with neighboring states and quell the outward migration of workers and employers. Sandack, too, sees overregulation of business and more favorable business climates in states like Indiana and Wisconsin as a source of Illinois’ ongoing financial woes. “We need to go to a progrowth, pro-jobs, pro-market environment that will grow the tax base by creating more tax payers,” Sandack said. Village approves faith-based stormwater grant Grant gives religious non-for-profits financial incentive to complete stormwater improvement projects By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter

Downers Grove churches now have incentive to reduce their stormwater runoff, as a new grant program will reimburse them up to 75 percent of the cost of approved stormwater improvement projects. The Downers Grove Village Council unanimously approved the creation of a stormwater utility grant program at its March 4 meeting. The grant provides religious non-forprofits with the financial incentive to undertake stormwater improvement projects. Churches could earn a maximum reimbursement of $25,000 per project, which could help them earn stormwater utility credits that

would reduce their bi-monthly bills. Commissioner Bob Barnett, who was critical of the grant program at the village council’s Feb. 11 meeting, voted in favor of the new program but not without comment. “I’m going to vote for this because … I’m looking for any opportunity to help out the churches in the community,” Barnett said. “I don’t like the structure. I don’t like the ‘use’ being what drives the eligibility.” Barnett was referring to a stipulation in the grant that requires eligible not-for-profits be religious in nature. At the Feb. 11 meeting, he said he sees it as an “equal access” issue. In the past, Barnett has advocated eliminating the stormwater >> District 81, from page 2 go up. “I’m totally against, what they call, the latest pension fix because all it does is maintain a failing pension model,” he said. Matune said he would like to see all new hires go into a 401k program, while giving people currently in the system a choice

Village Manager Dave Fieldman said the goal of the grant was to provide financial assistance to institutions that did not have the resources to undertake large stormwater projects. Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully also was critical of the grant but, like Barnett, voted in favor. Ultimately, he said the grant allows faith-based institutions to take actions

between their current state pension or a 401k. However, Sandack said S.B. 1 was an important first step in reforming the state’s pension system, adding that the bill is expected to save approximately $1.3 billion in the first year and $145 billion over the next 30 years. “To not vote on that, I think,

that will minimize the affect of the stormwater utility on their budgets, while simultaneously minimizing their property’s impact on the village’s stormwater system. “I’m going to vote in favor of this because I’d like to see it get started,” Tully said. “Although, I agree with Commissioner Barnett, I would like to see us continue to discuss it and perhaps tweak it and improve it.” The grant program will set aside $200,000 annually for potential applicants, which are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Village staff said that anyone interested in applying for the grant should first be in contact the village in order to review any proposed work. Reverse Commuter Permits

would be a dereliction of duty,” Sandack said. The next steps, Sandack said, would be to turn the General Assembly Retirement System into a 401k program and expand 401k options to other state workers. Additionally, Sandack would like to introduce legislation that prevents retirees from receiving pension benefits

The Village Council also approved reverse commuter parking permit for morning Metra commuters who arrive at the Main Street Station. The permit, which would cost $130, allows commuters to park their vehicles on the second floor of the parking deck overnight. “The Reverse Commuter permit supports the village’s strategic goal of a strong, diverse local economy,” performance manager Allison Deitch said in a village memo. “It facilitates a public transportation option for employers in Downers Grove who may employ workers living in Chicago and other suburbs. This permit would become effective in the third quarter of 2014.” Initially, the number of permits will be limited to 20, but the village may increase that number in the future.

if they were to take another state job. “Under my bill, if you are taking a subsequent job, your pension benefits would stop until you are again retired,” he said. There are currently no Democratic challengers declared for the November general election.

He lives in Hinsdale, a suburb on the border of Cook and DuPage counties. “Not someone from Rahm’s inner circle like Rauner.” However, this proved to be a misstep as Brady took the opportunity to bring up Dillard’s perceived collusion with Democrats on state legislation. These included Dillard’s support of laws that would require state lawmakers to carry the same standard health insurance benefits that citizens are now required to carry under Obamacare and his ties to Stuart Levine, key figure in the investigation that brought down former Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Throughout the debate Rutherford spent most of his time stressing that he was the party’s moderate candidate. He even joked that the debate’s moderators placed his podium between Dillard and Brady to emphasize this. However Rutherford ended up walking on eggshells when he

As recently as March 7 Rutherford hired three taxpayer-funded attorneys to represent him in the federal lawsuit. balanced interest for state. He said unions play a vital role in the state but said he would not “sell out” to them like he felt Dillard had. Dillard has allied himself with the state’s American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ Council 31; the Illinois Education Association; and the Illinois Federation of Teachers unions to combat Rauner’s deep pockets during the primary. To Brady’s remarks Dillard said comments that demonize union workers are disgraceful. He added that both Rauner and Brady’s comments and actions towards unions made them “unelectable.” Rauner has targeted the state’s unions as a hallmark of his campaign, blaming them for the state’s financial woes. Meanwhile Brady has said Dillard’s vote in favor of the state’s landmark pension overhaul“sold out”Illinois taxpayers to union interests. The controversial overhaul cut worker benefits and is estimated to save Illinois $145 billion over the next 30 years. However as the March 18 primary draws near, Rauner’s personal wealth and the support he’s gotten from deep-pocketed donors has let him outspend his opponents in advertising across the state. This increased media presence has allowed him to become the front-runner in poll data released on March 7.

Horoscopes Concentrate on how much you can accomplish in the week ahead by exerting a little extra effort. Following through on a project might be the key to getting where you want to go. Don’t be too easily discouraged by setbacks.

Your partner or a steady companion could seem quite negative or become obsessed by a get-rich scheme. It might be your job in the week ahead to be a guide and mentor to those less focused on facts.

Caution and wisdom often travel hand in hand. This week might offer many instances when you must be tough-minded now so you can enjoy prosperity in the future. Remain silent in the face of criticism.

If the winds of change don’t blow you in the direction you want to travel this week, adjust your sails. Learning to adapt to changing circumstances and using all the information at your disposal is the key to unlocking your latent talents.

When you have good advice and wisdom on your side, anything is possible. In the week ahead, a positive attitude and honest discussions will quickly resolve every challenge standing between you and the financial security you envision.

Much of your success and progress during the upcoming week will depend on whether you focus on good news or bad news. Remain willing to try out different solutions to old problems, especially in the workplace.

Implement financial safeguards so family matters don’t consume your nest egg. In the week ahead, you could be called upon to lead others and protect your circle of friends or loved ones from their own misconceptions.

There’s an upside to honesty in the week ahead, even if the truth seems to place you in a bad light. If you adopt an attitude that you’ve “made your bed and must lie in it,” you might find the bed quite comfy after all.

Find solutions that won’t exploit the opportunities shared by others while handling legitimate challenges with good grace. This week, you might be tempted to squander your resources on something that’s only a mirage.

You can fool yourself or be fooled by others in the week to come. Your hopes and dreams might seem achievable and making major changes looks easy, but seek objective advice before moving forward.

You can make progress in the week to come by quietly taking the lead and offering intuitive solutions. You won’t need to steamroll over the objections of others because people will recognize your high ideals.

In the week ahead, you have the ability to escape from the rat race and no desire to participate in oneupmanship. Within the bubble of your own unique brand of happiness you can avoid the material temptations of a dog-eat-dog world.

Dominant defense leads Benet to regional crown By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter

Through three quarters of play Friday night, Benet big man Sean O’Mara tallied 15 points, which by average is below what he normally scores in a game. That was fine, however, because for the same 24 minutes of game time, Waubonsie Valley had just 14 points – as a team. O’Mara and the Redwing starters did not play the final stanza, allowing the Warriors to more than double their output, but Benet still hung on for the dominating 57-33 win and the Lemont Regional championship. Top seed Benet (21-7) wasted no time making its defensive prowess felt, running out to a 16-2 lead after one quarter over the No. 8 seed Warriors (19-10) and held a 26-8 advantage at the break. “I don’t think we played all that well offensively in the first half,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp. “We only had 26 points and that is well below what below what we normally score in a half. But, I thought out defensive pressure and defensive effort was pretty solid. All in all, I was pleased with our effort.” O’Mara was happy with the effort. “This was a good win for us. We came out strong, especially >> see BENET | page 12

Sports >> BENET, FROM PAGE 11 defensively,” O’Mara said. “Waubonsie is a good team, but that eight-point first half is what won us the game.(Holding a team to single-digits in the first half) is rare. I was really proud of the way we came out and really paid attention to details. They wanted to double team and bring extra guys my way and that is fine. My team knows that as long they go hard to the glass, they will have free reign of the boards when teams want to double and triple team me.” Heidkamp said defense has not been the signature of Benet this season. “That has been sort of the knock on our team this year,” He said.“We know we can score points, the question is could we defend consistently? Part of it is we went through some growing pains early in the year defensively and we gave up a lot of points defensively. I think down the stretch of the season, we have understood the value of it and we have played better. Obviously, at this point in the season, if you don’t defend, you are going to have trouble advancing. In both games of the regional, we played well defensively, and that helped us

get out to some early leads.” Despite the big lead at the break, Benet came out wanting more in the third quarter. “I don’t know of any programs that will come out and be up by so much and want more,” O’Mara said. “Not because we want to blow them out or extend the lead, we want to get our teammates in the game. Those guys work hard every day in practice and they deserve the floor time as much as we do, so when we work hard, it benefits them. It is especially pleasing because we have seniors on the bench, who maybe don’t get the minutes late in the season.” The win was the second consecutive regional title for Benet and fourth in five years. Of the four regional championships, the Redwings have won only one sectional title. “We have our eyes on bigger goals,” O’Mara said. “But, we know we can’t take any wins in the playoffs for granted.” Benet faced Hinsdale Central on March 11 in the East Aurora Sectional opener. A win would place the Redwings in the sectional final Friday against the winner of West Aurora and Geneva. Follow @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

After shaky start, new foul rules seem to be working well At the beginning of the basketball season, I was interested to see how the new handcheck rules would play out on the high school level. After the first few weeks, I wasn’t a big fan of the results. There were constant fouls called throughout the game and there were an extraordinary amount of free throws taken in games. While I liked the idea of the new contact rules, I thought they were taking things a bit too far, especially insides, where some contact should be allowed. Things started getting better around the holiday break in terms of amount of fouls, but that seemed to be due to the lack of fouls called inside. Referees were calling little Scott Taylor/Bugle Staff

handchecks or arm bars, but there was some serious contact inside that was being let go. That was almost worse in a way because it made things more dangerous and the possibility of injuries arose. But after watching the games in the new year, the refs and the players have adjusted very well. Fouls have gone back to near normal and the fouls are being interpreted correctly according to the rulebook. I think this is a great change for the current and future landscape of basketball at the lower levels. It is teaching players to move their feet and play defense with their feet, rather than their hands. In fact, I have seen players adjusting well to this. There are fewer times where players put their hands on their opponents, and, a lot of times, they take their hands off of their opponents all the time. >> see FOUL | page 14

>> foul, from page 13 Even when they are called for the foul, instead of being frustrated by the call, they are realizing they made the mistake and they go back to work rather than complaining about it. It will be interesting to see how this transforms the game in the future. First, the players at the high school and college level now should be better defenders at the next level, whether it is college or pro ball. Also, if this is now being taught more at the younger levels (which I hope it is), the players should be prepared for the rules by the time they reach high school. While we knew there would be a transition period for the refs, players and coaches with these calls, it was a must and is moving in a positive direction on all levels. For now though, while players are still adjusting to the rules and are conscious of not putting hands on opponents, opponents should take advantage of this by driving to the basket as much as possible. I have seen this at times, but as we move towards the playoffs, this should be done even more. It can lead to some easy baskets and get key players in foul trouble. That will help players learn moving their feet that much faster. Follow Scott @Taylor_Sports staylor@buglenewspapers.com

Is there such a thing as too healthy eating? Orthorexia is an obsession with healthy eating that can lead to individuals severely limiting the foods they will eat Can you have too much of a good thing? When it comes to healthy eating, the answer might be yes. We all know that a healthy diet is important for preventing diseases and helps us have enough energy every day, but for individuals suffering from a condition known as orthorexia, healthy eating can become unhealthy. Orthorexia is an obsession with healthy eating that can lead to individuals severely limiting the foods they will eat. Although orthorexia is not a clinical term, and it has not been officially defined as a mental disorder, left untreated the condition can cause serious health problems including malnutrition, cardiac complications and in extreme situations, death.

“A major difference between orthorexia and anorexia is that for those suffering from orthorexia, achieving and maintaining an ideal weight is not one of the symptoms,” explains Dr. Jan RemerOsborn, a clinical neuropsychologist at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. “Rather, orthorexia is an obsession with both defining and maintaining a ‘perfect’ dietary regimen.” Just because someone follows a healthy diet does not mean they are orthorexic. So how can you tell if you or a friend or family member is displaying signs of orthorexia? “A healthy relationship with food looks food as a source of energy, of fuel for the day,” Remer-Osborn said. “Having a wellrounded life with many interests helps put food in its appropriate perspective. We should eat to live, not live to eat.” If you or a loved one experiencing any signs of orthorexia or have questions, it is important to contact a primary care physician who can provide resources to help you get on the path to a healthier life.

FeatUreS

ReMeR-oSboRn SayS to look foR theSe changeS in behavioR:

• Obsessive concern regarding the effect of food choices on health • Guilt for not adhering to strict diet • Spending an inordinate amount of time thinking about food • Avoidance of daily activities and responsibilities to follow diet • Fear of eating away from home or eating food prepared by others • Increased anxiety, depression or mood swings • Feeling increased self-esteem when eating the “right foods” while criticizing others who do not follow the same diet

• It is important for everyone, regardless of whether they are suffering from orthorexia, to have a healthy relationship with food.
