Council looks at sign ordinance exemptions By Daniel Smrokowski For The Bugle The Westmont Village Board considered restricting parking on Wilmette Avenue, from Rosewood Court to Traube Avenue, during its Aug. 7 meeting. “The issue is the vehicles of [Napleton Porsche] employees, approximately 20 to 26 on a daily basis, with exemption of the weekends, park in a residential area,” said Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn. If parking restrictions were put into place, they would affect local businesses such as Napleton Porsche, which is on the corner of Wilmette and Ogden avenues, as well as nearby residents. Mulhearn said residents on Wilmette Avenue were concerned that any special events at Napleton Porsche would further restrict, or possibly eliminate, parking during those events. Mulhearn also said that residents were concerned Porsche employees’ vehicles and trucks unloading vehicles spill onto the residential area on Wilmette Avenue, adding to traffic congestion. Prior to the Aug. 7 meeting, the parking issue had been addressed at a public safely meeting and a public boards meeting. Although time restrictions, which ranged from two to four hours, were on the agenda for the meeting, the board did not address if there would be any time restrictions put into place.

Public comments received the attention of the village council Tuesday when a business owner expressed his concern about replacing his sign that faces the Metra railway to comply with the village’s sign ordinance. Business owner Bob Peterson, owner of Leibundguth Moving & Storage, and Laura Crawford, president and CEO of Chamber 630, expressed concern about changing signage for Peterson’s business, which faces the railway. Metra is a public way and should be treated similar to a toll way for signage, Crawford said. Peterson, whose family opened this business in 1928, said he receives approximately 10 to 15 calls per month from those who see his sign from the railway. That’s approximately $50,000 to $60,000 worth of profit per year, according to the business owner. “Historical value has gone to the wayside in >> see sign | page 17

Village signs new electric aggregation contract Village: Homefield Energy rates 6.5 percent lower than ComEd

The village of Woodridge and the Will Electric Aggregation Group recently approved a new three-year contract with Collinsville-based Homefield Energy for its energy supply. The electric rates for Woodridge residents participating in the aggregation program will be 6.9 cents per kilowatt-hour, compared to the Commonwealth Edison electric rate of 7.4 cents per kilowatt-

hour that will be effective this October. The village said this represents a 6.5 percent savings over ComEd’ss rates. The new rate does reflect, however, an increase in the aggregation group’s supply cost per kilowatt-hour over what was in place during the past two years. The increased rate is due to several factors, including the increased costs of supply, decreased capacity to serve the

region and the impacts of the polar vortex, which negatively impacted some electricity suppliers. Eligible residential and small business customers wanting to participate in the program do

not need to do anything as they will be automatically enrolled, according to the village. Those not wanting to participate in the program will need to notify Homefield Energy. Woodridge residents and small businesses will receive a letter with instructions on how to opt out of the program. The village belongs to the Will Electric Aggregation Group, a group of municipalities brought together to create purchasing power with the goal of saving residents money on their electricity bill. In September 2012, the aggregation group entered into a contract with

First Energy Solutions for its electricity supply. The initial two-year contract with First Energy Solutions will conclude this fall. Residents are encouraged to be aware of other electric supply companies that will be soliciting door-to-door in an attempt to signup customers for electric supply with their company. Homefield Energy is the only company providing electricity supply through the village’s aggregation program. Residents are strongly encouraged to thoroughly examine any contract proposed by a supplier before entering into it.

Revised snow, ice operations for 2014-15 season Severe winter weather, equipment shortage among factors leading to service delays last winter

The village of Downers Grove recently said the 2013-14 winter season presented many service delivery challenges for snow operations, adding that the duration and magnitude of the winter tested the limits of the village’s response system. After reviewing operations for the season, village staff determined that the service delays could be attributed to factors such as the severity of the winter season, a shortage of fully functioning snow equipment and plow drivers, a regional salt shortage, and configuration of the snow routes. Because of these factors, the village identified several operational changes that are being implemented to improve services.

The number of available snow plow drivers has been increased, according to the village. Existing staff members currently assigned to other tasks will be used as drivers when needed, and back-up drivers will be used with greater frequency to improve their familiarity with the routes and improve efficiency. In the case of extended staffing reductions due to injuries, staff will evaluate the need to fill the vacancy with temporary employees. Additionally, the village increased the number of vehicles capable of effectively plowing streets in large events. The village recently purchased a 5-ton truck that will be used for snow operations. Further, the third wheel loader will most likely be equipped and used for snow operations. The village also is constructing a new, larger salt dome, which will allow the Village to purchase and receive a full-season supply

of salt prior to the start of the winter season. Further, the village has secured a second salt supply contract, bidding with

DuPage County and a group of additional municipalities and townships. Having two salt supply

vendors will improve reliability and reduce the likelihood of not receiving salt deliveries in a timely manner, the village said.

District begins Barth pond dredging project Parking lot on 55th Street and Grand Avenue will be closed during the project Cranes arrived at Patriots Park Monday to lower a dredge barge into Barth Pond, beginning a hydraulic dredging project at the popular pond. The project, which the park district says will take about four months, will remove approximately two feet of silt from the pond bottom using the floating barge. The dredging will increase the depth of the pond back

“There are several different methods for dredging a pond this size, however, we believe we have chosen the approach that will have the least impact on the existing pond and Patriots Park.” to its original five-foot depth, which is needed to help improve the health of the pond for plants and aquatic life. “Removing the accumulated silt is a critical step in restoring

the health of Barth Pond,” said Paul Fyle, superintendent of planning at the Downers Grove Park District. “A deeper pond, together with the recent shorelines improvements, will result in less algae growth and allow more fish to survive the winter months. “There are several different methods for dredging a pond this size, however, we believe we have chosen the approach that will have the least impact on the existing pond and Patriots Park.” The silt removed by the barge will be pumped through

pipes to a processing area at the east end of the park. The silt will be dried using beltpress de-watering machines and loaded directly into trucks for removal. During this project, the east parking lot, located on 55th Street and Grand Avenue, will be closed to the public. The shoreline and pathways will remain open. Additional improvements are also planned for the west end of Patriots Park, and renovation of the existing playground is expected to begin in early September, according to the park district.

‘Jimmy Buckets’ visits with Bulls-Sox campers By mike sandrolini For the bugle

mike@buglenewspapers.com @voyagersport

Youngsters who hope to become basketball stars at the elementary, junior high and high school level—and maybe beyond—sat in front of the east basket at the Bulls-Sox Training Academy in Lisle, waiting patiently for a certain Bulls guard who’s endeared himself to fans with his hard-nosed play at both ends of the floor to walk through the doors. Once they caught a glimpse of him, they erupted in applause. Jimmy Butler was in the house, and he savored the opportunity to meet with the dozens of boys and girls, ages 6-17, who signed up for Week 1 of the two-week Adidas Bulls Players Camp. A few weeks ago, it appeared doubtful that Butler, who averaged 13.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and was named to the all-NBA Defensive Second Team during his second NBA season in 2013-14, would even be making such an appearance. Butler’s name seemed to pop up in just about every trade scenario imaginable involving the Bulls, who were in pursuit of New York Knicks superstar Carmello Anthony and Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, after Anthony agreed to a contract extension with the Knicks, and Love was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Butler appears less likely to be going anywhere except back to the United Center. After talking to, and taking questions from, campers, Butler moved over to a table where he posed for pics with each participant and signed everything they put in front of him—jerseys, basketballs,

photos and even bobblehead dolls of himself. Butler, who’s scheduled to make a return visit to the Academy on Friday to conclude the final week of camp, is one of several current or former Bulls that met with campers over the two-week period. Former Bulls Stacy King and BillWennington— now color commentators for the club’s television and radio broadcasts, respectively—as well as Toni Kukoc and Randy Brown, each paid a visit, as did 2014 first-round draft choice Doug McDermott. “The kids absolutely eat it up,” said former Indiana University and Westchester St. Joseph standout Daryl Thomas, who captained the 1987 Hoosiers’ NCAA national championship squad and serves as the Academy’s lead instructor and head of player development. “Think about it: You go through a basketball camp and you get to actually meet an NBA player, you get things signed, you get a photo (taken) with them. You can’t beat that.” Nate, an 11-year-old from Palatine who plays for two teams—the St. Thomas of Villanova sixth-grade team and the St. Viator High School sixth-grade feeder team—has been attending the camp each summer for the past five years. He’s met not only each of the previously mentioned players, but also Scottie Pippen, Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah. “It’s fun,” Nate said of taking part in the camp. “All of the coaches are really nice. The work you have to put in, it’s made me a better player.” Larry Stewart, general manager of basketball at the Academy, explains that campers work on shooting, passing and foot work, and also “listening, believe it or

Downers North ready to navigate another tough schedule By Scott Taylor sports editor

staylor@enterprisepublications.com @Taylor_Sports

Despite going 5-4 the past two regular seasons, Downers North advanced to the Class 7A state quarterfinals each year, thanks to a tough conference schedule. That schedule looks brutal once

again this year for the Trojans. They do get to open play with a pair of non-playoff teams from last year,as the host Lockport (3-6) and travel to Hinsdale South (4-5) the first two weeks in nonconference play. The West Suburban Silver Conference play kicks off with Downers North playing at state

power Glenbard West (11-2) on a Saturday afternoon. Things don’t get easier as Oak Park-River Forest (9-2) comes to town before a trip to Lyons (5-5). The Trojans then get a break from the WSS schedule, but that is a home game against rival Downers South (6-4). A trip to York (3-6) is followed by a pair of

home games to finish the regular season, against Proviso West (2-7) and Hinsdale Central (5-5). •Downers South is looking to make it two straight playoff appearances after a rare year off. It opens play at Benet (6-4).That is followed by a home game against Proviso West (2-7) before West Suburban Gold plays opens at home against Addison Trail (2-7). A trip to Morton (1-8) is followed by a home game against Leyden (3-6). The Mustangs will finally see their second playoff team from last year in game six against crosstown foe Downers North (75). They then host Willowbrook (7-3) to conclude their home portion of the regular season. Their schedule concludes with road games at Proviso East (0-9) and Hinsdale South (4-5). While Downers North faces opponents with a total record of 48-42 last year, South plays teams which were a combined 32-54. •Benet will be breaking in a new quarterback this year after Jack Beneventi transferred to Fenwick for his senior season. The Redwings open play at home against Downers South (6-4) before a long trip down south to O’Fallon (5-5). A rugged East Suburban Catholic Conference schedule opens with a trip to Niles Notre Dame (7-4). A home game against St Patrick (7-4) is followed

by a road game at a tough Marist (9-4) squad. A home game against Nazareth (8-3) makes it six straight playoff opponents to start the season before a second straight home game against Carmel (2-7). The Redwings finish at Joliet Catholic (8-2) and at home against Chicago Heights Marian (2-7). That makes for a schedule against opponents that went 54-40 last year. •Coming off a 4-5 season last year, Lisle opens play at Peotone (8-3) before a home game against Aurora Central Catholic (6-4). Interstate-8 Small Division play opens up with a home game against Wilmington (8-2) before a trip to Westmont (1-8). Seneca (9-3) then comes to town before road games at ReedCuster (2-7) and Herscher (2-7). The Lions will finish off their season against a pair of I-8 Large Division teams, at home against Coal City (5-5) and at Plano (9-2). •Westmont opens its season at home against Chicago Christian (2-7) before a trip to Plano (9-2). The Sentinels open I-8 play at Herscher (2-7) before home games with Lisle (4-5) and Wilmington (8-2). A trip to Seneca (9-3) is followed by a home game against ReedCuster (2-7).Westmont closes play with I-8 crossover games against Manteno (5-5) at home and at Sandwich (5-5).

WrestleFest brings the punch By Mark Gregory sports reporter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard

As 6 p.m. approached Saturday, August 9, all you could see around Joliet’s Inwood Recreation Center were lines of people for WrestleFest 5. There were lines to buy tickets; lines to enter and lines for autographs. The difference in these lines and what you would expect to see when people are asked to wait in line was there was no disgust to be waiting, just a buzz of excitement to watch or meet some of their favorite pro wrestling stars from days gone by. When the night was over and the sold out crowd of 1,800 people poured out the exits, there were more lines of people – all leaving with smiles. The three-plus hour show included matches by the legends people came to see, plus surprise guests such as a reunion of the WWE tag team Too Cool when Grand Master Sexay Brian Christopher joined Scotty 2 Hotty for a tag team match. The fans also got to see two-time WWE Women’s Champion Victoria as a special guest referee that added a few moves to the match. The biggest surprise of the night was the appearance of Diamond Dallas Page, as he came to the aid of Blitz star Ryan Slade in a match against Matty Star. “It is great to have all these guys come out here like this is great,” said Plainfield resident

Brandon Andreason. “To have the surprise guests that we weren’t expecting to be here was great. It really makes you feel young again seeing guys that I haven’t seen in 20 years come out. It’s a lot of fun.” While some of the big draws like Kevin Nash and Scott Steiner didn’t enter the ring, fans had an opportunity to meet these icons in a meet and greet before the event as well as at intermission. Former Olympic gold medalist and WWE superstar Kurt Angle could not wrestle because of an injury, but was part of the meet and greet and did take to the ring to address fans. That was enough for Romeoville resident John Kosiek to buy front row seats to see his favorite. “I am big fans of all the wrestlers and I just wanted to see them live for the first time. I am following Kurt Angle and he is one of my favorites,” he said. “Everyone can come out here and enjoy the event and the best part is, you don’t have to spend a lot of money.” Angle himself was impressed at the Joliet crowd. “I was really impressed with the show and how many fans were here and the talent that came here,” he said. “At least seven of them I worked with in WWE and that is unbelievable. They are doing something right here and I am really impressed.” Probably the biggest name to get into the ring was WWE Hall >> see PUNCH | page 16

Harborside - Starboard

The windy city Starboard course near the lake Mark Gregory and I have played a lot of courses the past few years and Harborside I n t e r n a t i o n a l - taylor’s take by scott taylor Starboard Course ranks right up there with the best of them. It was a windy day as is and playing in Chicago, just minutes from Lake Michigan, made it even windier. We opened on the first hole, which is a 470-yard par 5 from the regular (white) tees (523 from championship or blue tees). It was playing with a 30mile per hour wind directly in our face. A one-putt gave me a bogey. The second hole was also into the wind with a good view of the Chicago skyline. The dogleg left is only 333 from the white tees, but is 380 from the blue. Hole No. 3 played 283 from the white and was downwind. However, it was tight with a bunker all the way down the left side of the fairway and green. I took a chance and went for the green and was able to carry the bunkers and finish just in front of the green. A unique fourth hole was an island green par-3 – surrounded by sand instead of water. It

played just 93 holes from the white. A couple of straight holes followed, a short par-5 and a regular length par-4. Then came the 320-yard seventh hole that was a straight shot to the hole, but had a fairway that had a dogleg to the right. The front nine finished with a 146-yard par-3 and a 395-yard par-4. The back nine opens with a 347-yard par-4 and it is followed by a 345-yard par-4 that again has sand all the way down the left side. It also jets out into the fairway about 100 yards from the green. The 12th is a long, winding par-5 and the 13th is a difficult par-3 along Lake Calumet. You have to play your shot slightly over the water that is to the right. The 14th hole plays 411 yards and again has sand off the fairway. There are also three bunkers around the green. The 15th hole plays at just 308 yards, but has a tight fairway near the green, with more sand down the right side. A layup is probably the play here, although I managed to find the narrow fairway in front of the green. Hole No. 16 is 365 yards and has a few bunkers and rough in the middle of the fairway, giving you an option to go left or right.

Harborside - Starboard quick tip: Be prepared for a lot Location: Chicago, IL best feature: Multiple holes play of wind. Take several extra clubs along Lake calumet and the course is just into the wind. minutes away from Lake Michigan. Wind is a factor.

Mark Gregory/Bugle Staff

Harborside International-Starboard Course offers views of the Chicago skyline.

Going left gives you more room, but a long drive can go through the fairway. Playing to the right can land you in a bunker off the fairway or worse, in the water. Although just 114 yards, the 17th hole is a tough par-3 over the lake. It is a large green from left to right, but there isn’t much room over the water. There are bunkers behind the green, so even if you clear the water off the tee, you could go into the water if you over-hit your sand shot. The 18th hole is a 502-yard par-5 that plays with the lake down the right and bunkers

all over the place, including a beach on the right side of the green. This hole was also playing straight into the wind, making it even more difficult. You have to lay back on your second shot as the fairway gets tighter inside 100 yards. For a course that costs $7585 typically during the week with a cart and around $100 on the weekend, there were a few more ball marks than expected and more than what we have seen on some of the previous courses. But besides that, the course was in great shape, with good fairways and

thick rough. The views on some of the holes will be the best you can find in the Chicagoland area, from the skyline to Lake Calumet. With the wind the course can be quite difficult as well. We enjoyed the Starboard Course so much that we hope to play the Portside Course at Harborside International next year. Chicago-area golf fans should be sure to play the Starboard Course at some point and those visiting out of town should make the course a top priority to play.
