By mark gregory sports reporter Nine months ago, NASCAR announced its new championship format and Sunday in Joliet, just like a proud daddy, the sport will show its new pride and joy off to the world live from Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet. The Grid System, which was announced in January, increased the field to 16 drivers and implements a new round-by-round advancement format that ultimately will result in a four car, best-finisher-take-all format. Under the new system, the first three races of the Chase, which begin Sunday in Joliet, will be known as the Challenger Round.

WHO WILL WIN THE MYAFIBSTORY. COM 400? Scott: Tony Stewart I will go back with my normal pick. It has been a rough year for Stewart on and off the track. Not only did he run over and kill a driver in a dirt race, he has yet to win this year on the Sprint Cup level. After missing a few weeks following the accident, he has returned to the track but picked up a DNF in his first race back. He also missed out on qualifying for The Chase,

THE BUGLE SEPTEMBER 10, 2014

despite having 16 drivers qualify this year. He has nothing to lose, he tends to peak well at the end of the year and has won multiple times at Chicagoland. I anticipate the Chicago crowd being positive toward him based on all the success he has had here and that will help motivate him to the victory. Mark: Kevin Harvick One of the most consistent racers this season, Harvick has run well at Chicagoland Speedway in the past. The No. 4 has a pair of wins

this season and five secondplace finishes already this season and as a contender for the 2014 Sprint Cup, he will be looking to grab the first win of the Chase as well and grab some all-important momentum. While I think Harvick’s team is a year away from actually grabbing the coveted Sprint Cup, he will put pressure on the other drivers this season with a Chase opening win. It will be a big win for Stewart-Haas racing as it would lock the young team into the second round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

WHO WILL WIN THE SPRINT CUP CHAMPIONSHIP? Scott: Kevin Harvick It has been a very balanced year in NASCAR, making it extra difficult to pick a winner. Harvick has been one of the drivers in the thick of the race throughout the year and I anticipate that continuing. He has had success at many of the racetracks where the chase will be at and will be extra motivated to pick up a title for Stewart-Hass racing. I also think Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Carl Edwards will be in the

thick of the battle throughout. Mark: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. This has been the best season for Junior in a while and he will end it with a Sprint Cup championship. Junior has three wins on the season, tied for second most of all racers this year. I firmly believe the Chase winner will come out of the Hendrick Motorsports garage, with Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon both likely to be in the mix. However, while Johnson has six Chase titles and Gordon has four, this year belongs to the No. 88 car.

Sidewalk plan a dead end

Residents oppose installation of 40th Street sidewalk amid flooding concerns By Christine M. Foushi for the bugle

Before beginning their studies, first-year medical students at Midwestern University in Downers Grove participated in an annual day of service. This year 206 new students at the MU’s Chicago CollegeofOsteopathicMedicine led camp activities, cleared brush, raised awareness and many more community service projects as part of their orientation program. MU spokeswoman Jill BlairSmith said participation in service projects gives students first-hand experience with the needs of the communities they will one day serve as health professionals. The projects also reflect a university-wide commitment to community service, according to the university. CCOM students completed a number of projects this year, including clearing brush and performing general maintenance at Almost Home KidsinNaperville,LymanWoods

in Downers Grove and St. James Farm in Warrenville; painting and weeded for Childserv and the Naper Settlement in Naperville; raising awareness for the Autism Society of Illinois with a tag day sale; and leading activities for children attending day camp at the Campfire USA in Lombard and Little Friends in Naperville. The students also painted and updated the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville and the Indian Boundary YMCA in Downers Grove, as well as helping with maintenance and yard work at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Lombard. Because of its community service work, MU has earned a spot on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the last several years. Residents of 40th Street came out en masse Sept. 2 to request the Downers Grove Village Council reconsider the installation of a sidewalk on a street they say continues to battle flooding issues. Judy Wohlt, a resident of the, said she is thrilled the village is updating the stormwater system in the area, but she said homes on the street have dealt with flooding issues over the last several years that are only getting worse. Wohlt’s asked the council to consider delaying the installation of the sidewalk or eliminate the plan all together. “I would hate to see the trees continue coming down and a sidewalk being put in that isn’t needed,” she said. “A concrete sidewalk is an impervious service and will contribute to the flooding.” Wohlt said flooding has already cost her $70,000. Village council discusses sign ordinance amendment Current ordinance allows one wall sign along public roadway or drivable right-of-way By Christine M. Foushi for the bugle

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @buglenewspapers

The Downers Grove Village Council revisited discussion of a text amendment to its current sign ordinance that would allow

wall signs on businesses to face the BNSF right-of-way. As the ordinance currently states, each business property owner is allowed to display one wall sign per tenant frontage along a public roadway or drivable right-of-way. The text amendment would add

three words to the end of the ordinance - “or rail right-of-way.” In August, Bob Peterson, owner of Leibundguth Moving & Storage, addressed the council asking to retain the wall sign on his building, which faces the BNSF railway. Peterson cited both economic and historic reasons why he wanted the sign to remain on his business, which was started in 1928. Tully said the focus of the amendment is to show there is a difference between a road right-of-way and a rail rightof-way. He said the proposed amendment makes sense that a road right-of-way and rail rightof-way should be given the same treatment. Although the text amendment does not address all of Peterson’s concerns, it does address allowing a business to have signage facing a rail rightof-way. Commissioner David Olson said this is a worthwhile endeavor to pursue and it is important to allow signs along rights-of-way, including a rail right-of-way. Commissioner Becky Rheintgen said, although believes signs should e allowed to face a rail right-of-way, she does not think it is fair to create a new process because one person asked. Other businesses in the village impacted by the sign ordinance are complying, according to Rheintgen. Olson made a motion directing staff to draft an amendment to the zoning ordinance to permit wall signs on buildings that face the BNSF right-of-way, but it failed for lack of a second.

Zoning variance granted to Wilmette Avenue home Nearby residents express concerns over property’s flooding potential By daniel sMrokowski for the bugle

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @DownersgrvBugle

The Westmont Village Board on Sept. 4 granted McNaughton Development a zoning code variance allowing the construction of a home that exceeds the maximum allowed lot coverage of 35 percent. Prior to the meeting, residents expressed flooding concerns over planed development at 704 S. Wilmette Ave., which is zoned in the R-3 single-family

residential district. Trustee Bob Scott asked who would be responsible if the property’s future homeowner discovered years from now there had been issues with its water best management practices. “We offer a one-year warranty when we sell someone a home, but it will ultimately fall upon the homeowner to carry out that system at some point,” said John Barry, construction project manager at McNaughton. Scott said he would like the homeowner to understand that there were some neighbors

Zemenak said he thought the builders were interested in expanding the retention in the front yard to meet those standards. Barry noted they were interested in either expanding the retention in the rear yard or making an additional one in the front yard, adding they would prefer to expand retention in the rear yard. Scott said neighbors should know that the homeowner will be responsible for flooding issues, and the builder should make sure that the water is captured on their property so it will then not affect other homeowners. Zemenak said the best way to do this would be to make sure they comply with the ordinance. Trustee Bruce Barker

expressed additional concern that any potential buyer of the home would not be aware they could not make any additional changes that would add to lot coverage. Barry said there is an agreement with a purchaser for the home, and said McNaughton informed the buyer they would not be able to cover the lot any further if the board approved the home as is.

Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said the contract would be good for a period of 20-years unless a shopping center or apartment complex presented an agreement for a longer period of time than the length of the lease of their property. Private properties covered in the ordinance include: schools, hospitals, condominium

complexes, any commercial or industrial facilities, shopping centers, and apartment complexes. Mulhearn said private property owners would have to apply for enforcement with the police department.

Early Retirement Incentive program: The Westmont Village Board also passed an early retirement incentive program. Earlier this year, Mayor Ron Gunter asked Village Finance Director Spencer Parker to

look into the early retirement program. Parker said the ERI program would provide opportunities for employees who meet the state’s requirements to be able to retire early. This would allow the village to save $170,000 to $200,000 annually, he said. In order to be eligible for the ERI, employees must be age 50 or over and have worked in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund for at least 20 years. Currently, there are 15 employees who are eligible for early retirement.

Police urge seat checks during Child Passenger Safety Week

Car seat checks to be held at Fifth Third Bank in Woodridge The Woodridge Police Department said Thursday it would host a National Seat Check Saturday event on Sept. 20 at Fifth Third Bank, 2353 63rd St., Woodridge. Certified child passenger safety technicians from the Woodridge Police Department will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to check car seats for proper installation and advise parents and caregivers on how

to choose the right car seats and install them properly in their vehicles. “Car seats, booster seats and seat belts are often used incorrectly,” Woodridge police officer Bill Bodnar said. “No parent wants to ever get it wrong when it comes to their children’s safety.” The event is free to the public and part of Woodridge’s participation in National Child

attend the event What: National Seat Check Saturday event When: Sept. 20, 9a.m. to 1p.m. Where: Fifth Third Bank, 2353 63rd St., Woodridge Cost: The event is free to the public and part of Woodridge’s participation in National Child Passenger Safety Week

Passenger Safety Week, which runs Sept. 14-20. This event is one of 78 events in Illinois sponsored by AAA, the Illinois Secretary of State, the Illinois

Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Illinois Department of Transportation. “By attending Woodridge’s car seat event, parents and caregivers can be sure their kids are riding as safely as possible in their vehicle,” Bodnar added. “Furthermore, even if kids are in the right seat, sometimes they are not buckled in properly.” The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible up to the top

height or weight allowed by their particular seats. Once a child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, he or she is ready to travel in a forwardfacing car seat with a harness. After outgrowing their car seats, children should be placed in booster seats, according to NHTSA. The law in Illinois said a child must be in an appropriate car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old. However, some children are not tall enough at age 8 for the seat belt to fit them like an adult, and they need to stay in a booster seat longer.

Contractor conducts village mosquito spray Village also asksing residents to assist in controlling mosquito population Clarke Environmental, a contractor hired by the village of Woodridge, conducted a villagewide mosquito spray on Monday. The mosquito spray for adult mosquitoes began at approximately 9 p.m. and was aimed at reducing adult mosquito populations by applying a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registered pesticide from a fogging machine mounted on a truck. The village said residents are encouraged to keep doors and their windows closed whenever a spray is being performed. Positive test for the West Nile virus in mosquitoes trapped in the region has been low, however, August and September is the time of year that West Nile concern increases. Residents should continue to themselves and family members

by covering up with long sleeves and pants when outside during times mosquitoes are most active, as well as applying mosquito repellents. The village also asked for the public’s assistance in controlling the mosquito population by following some simple steps: Keep length of grass short and bushes trimmed to prevent adult mosquitoes from living there; discard old tires, tin cans, buckets, bottles and other waterholding containers; keep gutters and drains clean so that water will drain properly; repair leaky pipes and faucets; cover trash containers to keep out rainwater; and empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use. The village also asked the residents change the water in birdbaths and plant pots at least once a week, as well as stock ornamental ponds with mosquito eating fish or use mosquito larvae control products. Woodridge has continued its comprehensive mosquito

abatement program to proactively treat for mosquitoes by applying altosoid briquettes to storm sewer catch basins, chemical treatments of standing bodies of water to kill mosquito larvae, along with stocking retention ponds with over 22,000 mosquito eating fish. The village asked residents to report concerns or issues through Clarke Environmental’s toll free hotline at 800-942-2555 in order to assist in centralizing the tracking and monitoring of issues and questions. Other questions can be directed to the village’s Public Works Department at 630719-4753.

street. “We don’t need it because nobody walks down the street,” she said. Village resident Daphne Frederick noted that nearby swale would empty water into her yard if the proposed sidewalk were installed. She said a one-size-fits-

all policy is not the best way to approach sidewalk installation. “What’s good for one neighborhood may not be good for another area,” she said. Other residents said the village should test the new stormwater system before installing the proposed sidewalk.

Downers South

Miracle finish lifts Mustangs to victory in OT By mike sandrolini For the bugle

Mike Sandrolini/Bugle Staff

Jordan Skach threw a touchdown pass as time expired in regulation for Downers South. The Mustangs went on to beat Proviso West 28-27 in overtime Friday.

With time literally running out in regulation of their Week 2 nonconference matchup opposite West Suburban Conference crossover opponent Proviso West last Friday—and Downers South on the verge of an 0-2 start—the Mustangs resorted to divine intervention. And the football gods answered their Hail Mary. Senior quarterback Jordan Skach threw up a prayer near the goal line from 30 yards out. Proviso West defensive back Jamonte Robinson tipped the ball up, but it fell behind him and into the arms of DGS senior wideout Max Soderlund, who cradled it in the end zone as the clock showed 0:00. Riley Heavey then entered the game, and the junior booted the critical extra point to force a 21-21 tie and overtime. “It was the last play of the game, and how often does that work?” said Soderlund, who finished with six catches for 92 yards and also made a crucial catch just prior to the Hail Mary, stepping out of bounds to stop the clock with four seconds left. “It came through and it was unreal for all of us. It was awesome.” Was there a storybook ending for the Mustangs? Of course. Ryan Taylor took the ball on DGS’ first snap in overtime on a sweep and motored across the goal line. Another Heavey pointafter made it 28-21. Proviso West needed a touchdown to keep the game going, and it got one from pintsized running back Chance Haney, who had scored the Panthers’ go-ahead touchdown to put them ahead, 21-14, with

52 seconds to go in regulation. However, on the point-after attempt needed to tie the game, the ball squirted out of the hands of the Proviso West holder, who did try to run with it, but he didn’t get far as a host of DGS players gang-tackled him. Final score: DGS 28, Proviso West 27 with five minutes to go before the stroke of midnight. (The varsity game didn’t get under way until around 8:30, and was later delayed for around 50 minutes due to lightning in the area.) “I’ve never experienced anything like that,” said Skach, who rebounded from a slow start in the first half to complete 8 of 9 passes for 102 yards during the second half. “There’s no feeling like that. I give that all to Max. That focus, I can’t even imagine what that takes. “He (the Proviso West DB) got up higher than all our guys and tipped it. I guess he just tipped it right up and it just landed in Max’s hands. I couldn’t believe it. Miracles, you believe in ’em.” The miracle finish also was something Mark Molinari hasn’t experienced in his years as a coach. Molinari was an assistant coach at DGS for 13 years prior to being named head coach last season. “We lost to York probably about eight years ago on something similar,” he said. “We struggled all night on offense and we put a couple passes together at the end and it gave us a shot. We practice that play and it happened to work. You need a little luck. “We played pretty good defense most of the night so we put ourselves in that position. We’re not going to give it back to them so we’re happy.” >> see OT | page 14

Notebook: Mahone headlines pre-race weekend festivities By Mark Gregory sports reporter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard

GAME 3:

Addison trail @ downers s. The details: Downers South is coming off a thrilling 2827 overtime win over Proviso West. The Mustangs (1-1) scored a touchdown on the final play to force overtime and will look to carry that momentum over to this week. Addison Trail (2-0) is also coming off a high after beating Hinsdale Central, a team that beat Bolingbrook, 18-10. Last year Downers South won the opening conference game against the Blazers 4021. However, the Blazers have already matched last year’s win total. Keys to the game: For both teams, the key is focus. After

game time Friday, 7:30 p.m. coming off of big, emotional wins, the team that can get calm and be more prepared will have a big advantage in the game. It will help that this is a key WSC Gold game to open the season, so the focus should be there for both teams. It is a game that could very likely come down to turnover differential. -compiled by Scott Taylor

GAME 3:

Benet @ notre dame The details: This will be the ESCC opener for both teams, and the first time the Dons and the Redwings have faced each other since 2011. Benet lost Iowa-bound Jack Beneventi during the-offseason when transferred to Fenwick for his senior year, but the Redwings haven’t missed a beat with sophomore Jack Sznajder, who’s helped lead them to a 2-0 start with his running and passing abilities. The Redwings defeated downstate O’Fallon, 24-10, last Friday, and knocked off Downers South, the defending West Suburban Gold champion, 26-16 in Week 1. The Dons opened up with an impressive 34-21 win over Prairie Ridge, but suffered a 3-0 loss to Bartlett last Friday. Keys to the game: Dons coach Mike Hennessey believes

game time Friday, 7:30 p.m. last week’s shutout doesn’t reflect negatively on his team’s offense, and he’s confident it will find the end zone with junior quarterback Tyler Tsagalis at the controls. “I feel like we’re a play and a block away” from turning things around, he said. “There’s no reason to gut or change anything. He (Tsagalis) has done a very good job. He has great poise and presence, and does a great job running the offense.” South. Benet has to continue its multiple-attack offense to get past a solid Notre Dame defense. -compiled by Mike Sandrolini

This season, 18-year-old pop star Austin Mahone will serve as the Grand Marshal and prerace entertainment for the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup on Sunday, Sept. 14. Mahone, who released his debut EP “The Secret” in late May, is set to kick off his summer tour across North America this July. Mahone’s latest single,“Mmm Yeah” featuring Pitbull, climbed to No. 2 on the iTunes charts in January, while his previous hit singles have garnered more than 88 million views on YouTube. Mahone has performed “Mmm Yeah” on “Good Morning America” and” “The Today Show.” It has been a year of rising star awards for the Chase Records/Cash Money Records, Inc artist after touring with Taylor Swift in 2013, including winning the MTV VMA’s “Artist to Watch,” and the MTV EMA’s “Best Push Artist,” and “Artist on the Rise.” “With someone like Austin performing, this becomes a fantastic opportunity to bring an entirely new group of fans not only to Chicagoland Speedway, but NASCAR as an industry,” said Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway. “Austin is a huge fan of our sport as well as an incredible entertainer. He’s performed on some of the biggest stages the country has to offer, and his star power will be a great asset in kicking off the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.” In addition to Mahone’s hour-long concert, race fans at Chicagoland Speedway can catch live musical entertainment throughout the entire weekend in Champions Park, which also features sponsor displays, delicious

food and beverage offerings and the Kids Zone for racing’s youngest fans.

KENSETH TO JOIN CHAMPIONS PARK In recognition of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory at Chicagoland Speedway in 2013, Matt Kenseth will be honored with a plaque in Champions Park on Friday, Sept. 12, prior to the Lucas Oil 225 Camping World Truck Series race. Kenseth, who made his first appearance in Chicagoland Speedway’s Gatorade Victory Lane last September, will unveil his new monument at 4p.m. on the north end of Champions Park. Since the inaugural race in 2001, Chicagoland Speedway has unveiled a monument in Champions Park for each of its Sprint Cup Series race winners, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Brad Keselowski and others. Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 20 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing, is currently third in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings. With a second place finish in Atlanta, Kenseth claimed his spot in the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the only driver without a win in 2014 to clinch so far.

RACE FAN RALLY The 14th annual Race Fan Rally returns on Thursday from 4-10 p.m. in downtown Joliet. Race Fan Rally is a free fan event that kicks off NASCAR’s Chase weekend at Chicagoland Speedway and is one of the largest single day race fan events in the country. Race Fan Rally includes the Sprint Cup Series hauler parade along with entertainment, driver appearances, race simulators, live music, hot food, cold drinks and a KidZone area for children. GAME 3:

Downers N. @ Glenbard W. The details: Downers North is 1-1 after a tough 6-0 loss to Hinsdale South. Glenbard West is looking strong yet again this year as it just blew out Morton and opened with a 21-10 win over Wheaton Warrenville South after losing to it last year. Downers North fell to Glenbard West, a Class 7A semifinalist last year, 21-0 at North last year. The Trojans put up 31 points in their opener, but were shut out last week. It will only be harder to get on the board this week against an always strong Hilltopper defense. Keys to the game: Downers North will have to play ball

game time Friday, 7:30 p.m. control on offense. It needs David Edwards to lead long, sustained drives that end in points. Last year the offense failed to move the ball consistently against Glenbard West and didn’t take advantage of a couple opportunities. On defense, the Trojans will need to force turnovers and limit big plays. -compiled by Scott Taylor

GAME 3:

wilmington @ lisle The details: Lisle (1-1) fell to Aurora Central Catholic 29-14 Saturday in a game postponed from Friday. Wilmington is coming off an impressive 26-7 win over Coal City and sits at 2-0 heading into conference play. Last year the Wildcats held off the Lions 20-10. Keys to the game: This might be Lisle’s best chance to beat the perennial conference power in

game time Friday, 7:15 p.m. the past several years. The Lions must win the turnover battle if they want to pull off the upset and limit the possessions in the game. -compiled by Scott Taylor

GAME 3:

westmont @ herscher The details: Westmont is coming off a 65-21 loss to Plano and sits at 1-1 after a 56-34 win over Chicago Christian to open the season. Herscher, defeated Peotone 13-7. The Tigers opened the season with a 32-14 loss to Manteno. Herscher won last year’s meeting 51-12 to open the season. Keys to the game: The Westmont defense will need to be on it’s A-game for the Sentinels to be successful. While

game time Friday, 7:30 p.m. they will be able to score some points, the Herscher defense is strong enough to contain them somewhat. On offense, the Sentinels would be well off if they can hit 30 points. -compiled by Scott Taylor

Sports >> FIELD SET, FROM PAGE 1A The next three are the Contender Round and the next three are the Eliminator Round with the final race of the year at Homestead crowing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion. After each round, four drivers will be eliminated, shrinking the field from 16 to 12 to eight and ultimately to the final four who will be the only ones eligible to win. The highest finisher of those four in the final race is the champion. NASCAR Hall-of-Fame driver and ESPN analyst Dale Jarrett said the new format will add excitement to the sport of racing. “I am looking forward to this, especially being the first time with the new system. I think everything is going to be quite interesting and completely different than what we have seen in the past. I was there in January as part of the announcement and I was really excited to see what NASCAR was doing,” he said. “Winning has always meant a lot, but now it will mean even more to get yourself positioned and on to the next round and that will be the things drivers and teams really don’t know about because they haven’t experienced this three races and moving forward. It should be fun and Chicago is a great place to get things started.” Jarrett said this change is something that will add more excitement to all 10 races in the Chase. “This puts a real premium on each and every week and that is going to be the key,” he said. “Winning becomes even more important and don’t think the drivers and teams haven’t thought about that, knowing they pretty much control their own destiny.” While winning is at a premium

>> OT, FROM PAGE 11 Luck and miracle finishes notwithstanding, the victory certainly gives the Mustangs momentum going into Friday’s game at home with Addison Trail (2-0), which blanked Hinsdale Central last Friday— the team that upset top-ranked Bolingbrook in Week 1. “After the loss (to Benet in Week 1) we knew we hurt ourselves a lot during that game,” Skach said. “We played a good team but we did not help ourselves. We didn’t sulk about it; we just came back and started working.” The Mustangs didn’t waste much time capitalizing on a

in the new system so is not making mistakes and running a clean race. “Winning gets you in, but there is only the opportunity for three winners to move on,” Jarrett said. “The rest of the teams will have to worry about having a solid performance and not making any mistakes. In years past, if you had an issue, you had a hiccup, you made a mistake on the track or pit road and you didn’t have a good finish, you knew you had more races to make it up. In this system, in basically a three-race format for nine weeks, you can’t have that bad race. It will be hard to recover and it will make you have to win to get through.” This year’s field is made up of Brad Keselowski, who earned a victory at Richmond in the final race before the Chase and grabbed the series-leading fourth win. As each Chase contender starts with 2000 points with each win counting for three bonus points, he goes into the Chase with 2012 points. He is followed by his teammate Joey Logano and a trio of Hendrick cars in Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jimmie Johnson, all with 2009 points. Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards each have 2006, while Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Aric Almirola and AJ Allmendinger all have 2003.The three non-winners to make the Chase based on points were Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Ryan Newman. The biggest difference in NASCAR and other sports is that in all other sports, when the playoffs start, the non-qualifiers go home. That is not the case here. “There are 16 drivers that have the opportunity to win a championship, but there are still 26 other drivers and teams that are racing hard out there,” Jarrett

said. “A lot of those drivers and teams that were just outside of that 16 cutoff, their sole purpose is to win the race. They understand the other guy are driving for a championship and they are not, but some of these guys are driving to keep a job or help get noticed to get a better job and others are trying to attract or keep a sponsor happy. “You have Brian Vickers and Clint Bowyer, who came close to winning the other night, you have Austin Dillon and Kyle Larsen, both rookies that are capable of running up front.Tony Stewart is back and he can win anywhere he goes.” With the added pressure to win and secure a spot, Jarrett said fans may see a more exciting style of racing at Chicagoland Speedway. “It could add excitement to Chicago,” he said. “There are four teams that will not make it to the next round and they have to take chances. So, if they are taking a chance at staying out on older tires, not only is it a chance for them, but if they get up in front of drivers who elected to pit, that could make restarts even more exciting, especially as we get late in the race.” However it shakes out, the opening of the Chase will not be the same as years past. “As much as the drivers say there is no more pressure than every week, that’s not true,” Jarrett said. “They may not admit it, but when they get to Chicago, they know they have three weeks to win a race, but they don’t want to get to Louden next week knowing they have to win there or at Dover. They are going to want to win in Chicago, which will lead to some drivers and teams taking chances, which in turn, will lead to excitement and good racing for the fans.”

Proviso West turnover midway through the first quarter. Junior defensive back Robert Justus stepped in front of a pass from Panthers quarterback Dennis Bryant Jr. and raced 57 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 DGS lead. Haney, though, knotted the score at 7 with a 4-yard run at 11:02 of the second quarter. A minute later, lightning was spotted south of the field to force the delay. After halftime, the Mustangs took advantage of a 9-yard Proviso West punt and were in business at the Panthers’ 35-yard line. Senior running back Jacob Baker (22 carries, 72 yards) later scooted in for a 6-yard

touchdown, and the Mustangs led 14-7. However, the Panthers tied it on a 26-yard Bryant-toJulian Miller TD pass with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Molinari said he’s hoping to get better play out of his seniors. “If we’re going to have a chance to attain any of our goals, our seniors are going to have to start playing better and be more accountable about what they’re doing out there,” he said. Defensively for the Mustangs, Jamaal Harvey had a pass deflection and a tackle-for-loss, Jeffrey Agnew recorded a sack, Mike Connolly had a tackle-forloss, and Ryan Taylor recovered a fumble.
