Village board hears presentation on lifting video gaming ban By AnDreA eArnesT enterPrise staff

Kevin McGourty of Tap Room Gaming appeared before the Plainfield Village Board last week with the hope of bringing video gaming to the village. “I’m respectfully requesting that you reconsider your position on allowing video gaming in the village of Plainfield,” said McGourty, who added that Fox’s Restaurant and Pub had given him a letter that outlined its support of video gaming. McGourty, a licensed video gaming operator, said he represented several Plainfield restaurant owners. Trustee Bill Lamb said he was concerned video gaming would siphon funds from residents that could be better spent elsewhere. “This is designed for local entertainment,” McGourty said, noting that the payout is low, unlike a casino. Despite some board members’ caution and opposition to the proposal, several trustees said they were open to future discussions on video gaming after the presenter compiled more information. “I’d like to see some data driven research; not just opinion or speech,” Trustee Garrett Peck said. Peck said he wanted to make sure that video gaming would not adversely affect restaurants and asked if any restaurants had gone out of business because of the machines.
