The Plainfield Park District Board accepted a bid for prescribed fall burns at its Aug. 12 meeting. Tall Grass was awarded the $17,450 bid. Eaton Preserve, Norman Greenway and Mather Woods are all scheduled to be burned this fall. They were all burned in 2011 and were supposed to be burned again in 2013, but were not. The park district said it is recommended that these types of properties are burned every two years. “We had allocated $24,000 [in the budget], $15,000 of which was originally for prescribed burns, and the other $9,000 for pond maintenance,” said Executive Director Carlo Capalbo. He added that the pond maintenance costs were lower than expected, so even though the burn bid came in higher than expected, it still falls within the budget. Commissioner Peter Steinys questioned why burns weren’t done in-house, saying it could save money if staff were trained to do this type of work. Commissioner Mary Kay Ludemann said training staff is quite expensive and there’s more to the process than is reasonable for staff to take on. The bid was approved, despite Commissioner Peter Hurtado abstaining and Steinys voting no.
Tree replacements The board also accepted a bid for tree replacements at various park district locations. The bid was awarded to Beary Landscape for $18,887.50. The project will replace 37 trees at the Equestrian Center, Dunmoor Estates, Van HornWoods,Village Green and the Northwest
