When the Aug. 28 tornado struck the Plainfield, Joliet and Crest Hill area in 1990, 29 people perished. Among those, Charles Likes, the brother of Paul Likes, was killed. Paul Likes did the original design for the tornado memorial at Plainfield Central High School in 1991. The owner of P.A. Likes, Inc. recently refurbished the memorial and also donated plants, trees and shrubs for the project. “It fell into disarray,” Likes said. He added that he called a year ago to begin preparations for the 25th anniversary. Likes had help from his own crew, as well as from local Boy Scout Mike Collins. Collins helped Likes to fulfill his Eagle Scout badge. “Mike and his Troop came in one day and helped rip out the old plants,” Likes said. Collins said he found out about the memorial through his older sister and her fiance. His sister’s fiance lost an older sister to the tornado. Collins said his mother and him decided to choose the location because they felt it could be improved with new landscaping. “I chose this project because the monument grounds looked dull and were not well maintained,” Collins said. “We felt that after 25 years we wanted to better honor those who died as a result of the tornado.” Collins added that the project was made easier because of the knowledge of Likes, the additional work crews and the equipment Likes brought. “I believe that people in the community will be pleased with the new look of the monument grounds,” Collins said.
