The Plainfield Committee of the Whole heard a presentation last week from communication services company Metronet about bringing fiber optic lines to the village. Metronet’s fiber optic lines have limitless bandwidth. Kathy Scheller, from Metronet, spoke to the board. Scheller said Metronet provides service for 120,000 homes and businesses, and 45,000 subscribers. “If fiber goes by your home, and you want to have it, we are able to do that,” Scheller said. Metronet looks for different communities to introduce its service, and chose Plainfield as a possible place. Plainfield could be the first community in Illinois, although others are being looked at. Metronet would have to install fiber lines down every street in Plainfield, but line construction is minimal and doesn’t take up much space. It would be a $20 million project, but the village would not pay that cost, Metronet would. Village Administrator Brian Murphy said this would be a worthwhile service to provide residents. According to the presentation, Metronet could make Plainfield a gigabit city, which only 10 percent of U.S. residents are. A gigabit city, Metronet claims, will receive Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit-per-second. Scheller added that their pricing is very similar to other providers, but it provides faster services. According to its website, Metronet can be used to get the fastest internet and clearest cable TV and phone service with its 100 percent fiber optic network.
