A Plainfield high school student is preparing for the trip of a lifetime this summer. Rachael Lau, a junior at Plainfield North, was one of 44 students from across the country to receive the American Association of Teachers of German Study Trip Award, which includes an all-expenses-paid study rAChAel lAu trip to Germany. “I am thrilled and honored to receive the AATG Study Trip Award,” Lau said. “One of my goals is to study in Germany for a semester during college, and the opportunity to live with a German family this summer will be great preparation for this.” Lau was named a national winner after she earned a qualifying high score on the Level 3 2015 National German Exam for High School Students. After scoring in the 91st percentile on the exam, Lau submitted several short essay responses to questions in English and German. She was then interviewed by a committee of high school teachers and college professors of German. Almost 21,000 students took part in the program, which is sponsored by AATG, but only 44 received the award. The study trip includes round-trip air transportation to Germany from New York, a homestay in a host family, and visits to culturally and historically significant places. The study trip award is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany. “This program gives students the chance to experience Germany firsthand by living with a German family and attending school,” said Keith Cothrun, executive director of the AATG. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
