Parents and members of the community can now access news about District 202 and its schools at the speed of light from any mobile device. The new District 202 mobile app, available for free through both the iTunes App Store and Google Play, offers on-demand access to district and school news. Lane Abrell, superintendent of schools, said the app has been in development for several months. Now that it is available, Abrell said it is a welcome and needed addition to the district’s communications “tool box.” “The world today functions through our smartphones and mobile devices, and it is more important than ever that we have as many options as possible to provide valuable information to our parents and taxpayers in a timely and user-friendly way,” Abrell said. In addition to providing users personalized news, the mobile app sends alerts on school closures or early releases and emergency notifications. District 202 social media accounts and calendar events can also be accessed through the app. The new tool gives parents instant access to attendance and emergency hotlines; links to the Home Access Center parent portal for grades, assignments and class information; and monthly lunch menus, sports schedules and newsletters. District 202’s new mobile app is the latest in a series of recent initiatives to improve communications between its schools and the community. One program that launched this year allowed teachers to create personalized classroom websites. The district said additional improvements are scheduled for the upcoming school year.
