Park Truth honored for citizen advocacy Group of Plainfield residents acted on the public’s behalf when they saw park district irregularities
“I love my Library, and here I am having my own book signing,” said Mary Kubica, Plainfield’s own and newest author. Kubica was at the Plainfield Library’s main, and largest, meeting room to greet fans who came to hear her talk about her first book and book signing Nov. 19.
Park Truth, a group of Plainfield residents who acted on the public’s behalf when they saw park district irregularities, will be recognized among other groups Dec. 9 by the Elmhurst-based Citizen Advocacy Center. Park Truth will receive a 2014 Citizen Initiative Award, which the CAC has given since 1997 to recognize local community activists who are catalysts for democratic participation and have used civic, legal, and community organizing tools to advocate for a self-identified issue of public concern. “Those honored by CAC are dynamic in that they have identified a local issue of public concern and have taken action to organize community initiatives, advocate for greater accountability of public bodies, and make a difference in the communities in which they live,” said CAC Executive Director. “Often times, these individuals are criticized by government officials as ‘troublemakers’, ‘agitators’, ‘uninformed’ and more. CAC identifies these individuals as inspirational because they embody what it means to live in a participatory democracy, and their dedication to
