The Illinois Labor Relations Board has ordered the Plainfield Park District to reinstate an employee they say was harassed and ultimately fired last year for attempting to recruit a fellow employee into the union. AFSCME Council 31 filed the complaint in August on behalf of Joel Schumaker, whom they said was reassigned to another position and ultimately fired after Park District officials disciplined him for trying to sign up another employee into the union. AFSCME started organizing full- and part-time Park District officials in June. “The park district unfairly and illegally suspended and then discharged Joel, who was seeking only to exercise his right to form a union and talk to his co-workers about how they could come together for a stronger voice at work,” said Anders Lindall, a spokesman for AFSCME Council 31. “(We) filed charges, arguing that the park district’s retaliatory action against Joel violated state labor law.” The order states that Schumaker had signed a union authorization card,
