summer farmers’ markets aren’t difficult to come by – during the warmer months, they seem to pop up every weekend in almost every city’s downtown area – though winter is a different story. but just because freezing temperatures and frost prevent the growth of produce, doesn’t mean local farmers hibernate for the season. saturday, Feb. 8, plainfield united Methodist church, 15114 s. illinois st., hosted a winter farmers’ market, organized by the chicago-based non-profit, Faith in place. Faith in place puts together around 15 winter farmers’ markets throughout the season, aiming to bring healthful, sustainably-grown food to congregations and communities across chicago and the suburbs.

It’s been a tumultuous month or so for the Plainfield Park District. First, the Planning Department was eliminated after the resignations of Director of Planning Cameron Bettin and landscape architect James Less.A new public comment policy drew First Amendment criticism during January’s board meeting. State officials found the district in violation of labor law, and then Executive Director Garrett Peck resigned and was replaced by Interim President Peter Executive Director Gene Hurtado Coldwater. Most recently, Park Board Vice President Janet Silosky accused President Peter Hurtado of trying to unload his unwanted stock of LED lights by having the park district purchase them. Although the Feb. 4 Vice President board of commissioners Janet Silosky meeting didn’t bring a lot of new business to light, commissioners and citizens alike expressed concern about the >> see bOarD | page 2
