INFLATABLE … BUT STILL DANGEROUS Residents warned of safety regulations for blow-up pools By Suzanne Baker Enterprise Reporter
T
he arrival of summerlike weather stirs thoughts of swimming. And what better way to enjoy a cool dip than hopping in a pool in one’s own backyard. Before taking the plunge, municipal officials are urging people to be aware of swimming pool regulations before they install a backyard pool … even ones that some may consider temporary. Virginia Obeirne, a member of the Arbor Creek Homeowners Association, noticed inflatable pools popping up in her neighborhood and around town. While most owners remove the water at the end of the day from the smaller kiddie pools, Obeirne found daily draining often does not happen with the larger 10-foot-wide, 3-foot-deep versions. She fears for the safety of children who might fall in and drown. “I lost my son,” said Obeirne, whose son died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty furnace.“I don’t want anyone else to experience the pain I’m been through.” “Nobody’s been hurt at this point in time,” she said.“I’m just trying to be proactive.” In Plainfield, a swimming pool is defined as any pool of water more “having a depth at any point more than 2 feet intended for the purpose of immersion or partial immersion” of people. Regulations establish where in the backyard pools can be placed and where fencing is needed.

Plainfield families thinking about buying a swimming pool should be aware of Plainfield municipal codes. Even temporary, inflatable pools that aren’t drained at the end of the day require covers and safety protection.
