The Congregation Church on Lockport Street is recognized as the oldest continuously used church in Will County. It, as well as other 19th century buildings along Lockport Street in Plainfield’s Historic Downtown District, will move into the 21st century this fall in an effort to preserve the past. The Plainfield Historic Preservation Commission just published a self-guided walking tour brochure of the downtown district which includes 26 of Plainfield’s historic structures. Now, the village is finishing up an expanded online version to complement the brochure that will be accessible to smartphone or tablet users. Come fall, Plainfield will be only site in the state on the National Register of Historical Places to use quick response (QR) code technology to spotlight its Historic Downtown District, according to Michael Bortel, chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission. Basically people will be able to create their own walking tour on their mobile devices. See HISTORY, page 5
